Chapter 13: First Trial*Crowd Mutter*
*GAVEL*
Judge: "The court is now in session for the trial of Ms. Lana Skye."
Franziska: "The prosecution has been and always been ready."
Core: "...OW!"
Franziska: "Now, now, Mr. Rect. Being silent wont help you in these kinds of trials anymore. Speak up."
Judge: "Mr. Rect."
Core: "Y-Yes, your honor?"
Judge: "This IS your first public trial. May I suggest to relax and don't get up to your nerves. This is a murder case and the results may not be what you hoped would be."
Core: "I-I understand, your honor. The defense is, uh, ready...your honor."
Judge: "Very well, your opening statement, Ms. von Karma."
Franziska: "It should be obvious. The defendant, Ms. Lana Skye, murdered two victims with a hand gun that fired four bullets at two different locations: Clear Sky and Salty Clear Waters. Angel Dark was shot twice. One on the back and one on the right temple. Side Cui was shot once; straight to the heart."
Judge: "I see. Now that you mention obvious...OW!"
Franziska: "I see no point of processing any further. Verdict is needed, now!"
Core: "H-Hey! That's not fair!"
Ema: "Rexie! Don't just stand there! They are about to give out the verdict! Do something!"
Core: "(I have to do something...here goes nothing!).
"
Your honor! This is ridiculous! Ending the case without any proof. You should know better."
Judge: "I guess your correct, Mr. Rect. I will delay my verdict for later."
Core: "(Delay? You mean you're on Franziska's side!?)."
Ema: "Nice job, Rexie! That was close."
Core: "I hope that doesn't happen again."
Judge: "May we proceed? Your witness, Ms. von Karma."
Franziska: "I want that foolish detective up there on the stand, now!"
Judge: "V-Very well then."
Core: "(At least man up and control the court, your honor...)."
Franziska: "Name and occupation."
Gumshoe: "Dick Gumshoe, Detective, sir!"
Ema: "He looks nervous..and rushed."
Core: "(Welcome to the club, Gumshoe.)."
Franziska: "Diagram, now!"
Gumshoe: "O-Okay. Here's the diagram. Ms. Lana Skye was 3 feet away from Angel Dark, making it a point blank distance. She fired 3 bullets, but one of them missed. The two bullets hit Angel to the back and right temple. Side Cui was 5 feet away from Angel Dark, which means that he was 8 feet away from Ms. Lana Skye. Side Cui was shot straight to the heart."
Gumshoe's Diagram:
Lana---Angel-----Side (Each -'s count as 1 feet.)
Judge: "Now it does sound obvious."
Franziska: "Again, verdict, now!"
Core: "Franziska von Karma, why the rush? You haven't proven anything, yet."
Judge: "That is, again, correct, Mr. Rect. No verdict at the time being."
Franziska: "Fine, next witness."
Judge: "Wh-What?"
Core: "Wh-What?"
*Crowd Mutter*
*GAVEL*
Judge: "Order! Order! I will have order! Ms. von Karma-OW!"
Franziska: "I said, next witness. Is that too much to ask?"
Ema: "What's going on, Rexie?"
Core: "I don't know-OW!"
Judge: "OW!"
Gumshoe: "OW! Why me!?"
Franziska: "You foolishly foolish fools who foolishly does not get any foolish ideas of what a von Karma is saying. I said, next witness."
Judge: "But-OW!"
Franziska: "*Glare*"
Judge: "D-Detective Gumshoe, you are dismissed."
Gumshoe: "You mean I went up here just to show a diagram-OWOWOWOWOW!"
Franziska: "Now, now, Detective. You are dismissed. Or are you trying to receive a raise?"
Gumshoe: "Oh, man."
Ema: "I think we should let this slide, for now."
Core: "Why?"
Ema: "Well, if you think about it. All she ever wanted was a diagram. Now she wants the next witness, which means that she may have a plan in mind."
Core: "A plan you say? (You mean she's not crazy after all these events...)-OW!"
Franziska: "Wipe those thoughts out of your mind, Mr. Rect. My witness will be that boy."
Judge: "...Ms. von Karma, may I remind you that most of the people in court are male."
Ema: "H-Hey! I'm a female."
Core: "(I feel sorry for Ema for being ignored like that.)."
Judge: "OWOWOWOWOWOW!"
Franziska: "Use your logic! Boy is a good meaning for a kid. I want that 10 year old boy on that stand."
Judge: "V-Very well."
Core: "(Why can't my cases be normal and simple?)."
Franziska: "Name and occupation."
Cody: "Hmph, just because you're an adult doesn't mean you can push around a kid."
Franziska: "Oh, remember the prize consequence you will receive if you act like that? If you do want it badly, I'm not concerned at all."
Cody: "Gah...nnnngggg...o-okay, I'm sorry."
Core: "(Prize consequence? What is she talking about?)."
Franziska: "Name and occupation."
Cody: "Cody Hackins...5th grader."
Core: "Is this the kid witness you were talking about last night?"
Ema: "What do you mean?"
Core: "What do I mean!? You're the one who did the investigations, right? And summarized the whole investigations to me!?"
Ema: "I-I don't know. I forgot!"
Core: "You...you forgot!?"
Ema: "I can't remember anything from my investigations. All I remember is what Gumshoe said. I don't know what's wrong with me today."
Core: "Well, just keep remembering, Ema. I need your help."
Ema: "I'll do my best."
Franziska: "Testify to the court on what you saw on the day of the crime scene."
Cody: "O-Okay."
What I Saw On The Day of The Crime Scene:
Cody: "I saw two people out on the field. I rushed behind the bushes and look out on them again. Then...that lady fired three bullets! I quickly took a picture! That lady fell down and died. After that, I fainted. That's all I remember."
Judge: "Intriguing. Very well. Mr. Rect, you may cross-examine the witness."
Core: "Cross-examine...what do you do again?"
Ema: "I think you point out the lies in the testimony."
Core: "You mean he's lying?"
Ema: "Well, that is how you get contradictions...I think."
Core: "(Let's hope for the best that I can find any contradictions.)."
Franziska: "..."
Core: "(I'm pretty sure she has something up on her sleves.)."
Core: "What do you think, Ema?"
Ema: "I think I remember now."
Core: "What is it?"
Ema: "I think it's obvious, Rexie. He said that he saw two people."
Core: "Yeah, two people out on the field."
Ema: "But look at this photo in his camera."
Core: "O-Oh! There's another person!"
Ema: "Let them have it, Rexie!"
Core: "Alright! Here goes!
Cody, are you sure you saw two people?"
Cody: "Y-Yeah! Of course I did, that lady who died and that other lady who fired those three bullets!"
Core: "Well, I understand that, but did you see anyone else there?"
Franziska: "He saw what he saw. Only two people out on the field."
Core: "I hardly believe that. I have proof that he saw not only the two ladies, but another person!"
Cody: "Gah!"
Franziska: "Ha, I think you're bluffing. Show us the evidence."
Judge: "Mr. Rect, give us proof that this witness saw three people out on the field."
Judge: "That's...a nice camera you have."
Franziska: "Wh-Who owns that camera?"
Core: "This camera belongs to the witness, Cody Hackins."
Franziska: "The witness's camera? How did you.."
Ema: "I found it at Salty Clear Waters."
Judge: "What was it doing there?"
Ema: "It wasn't legally under in investigations, so I decided to take a look."
Franziska: "Hmph, how smart of you. Investigating before it became police property."
Core: "We'll explain why this camera was found at Salty Clear Waters. We need to focus on what the witness saw. Now, I would like your attention to one of the photos in this camera."
Judge: "Hm, I see the defendant and the victim, Angel Dark...what's this!? Another person on the field?"
(Picture shows Lana Skye and Angel Dark on the center. Side Cui's body is shadowed in the far right of the picture)
Ema: "Nice job, Rexie. I think I remember now."
Core: "What do you remember?"
Ema: "That is Side Cui. I examined his footprints. I remember doing that."
Core: "Nice job for remembering. Now I have to explain the other parts."
Ema: "You go do that. I still have a lot of remembering to do."
Franziska: "Wh-What is this, witness?"
Cody: "I, uh, don't ask me."
Franziska: "Grrrr..."
Judge: "Is now the time where I should ask where and how you found the witness's camera?"
Core: "(Should I tell him now or later?) Not yet, honor. I'm in a middle of a cross-examination."
Franziska: "Hmph, you should take advantage in this situation instead of leaving it behind."
Judge: "That's right, Mr. Rect. Are you sure about this?"
Core: "(I have to think. Cross or take it?) ...I'll remain cross-examinating the witness."
Judge: "Very well."
Ema: "Are you sure, Rexie?"
Core: "I know what I'm doing...I think."
Ema: "No pressure, Rexie."
Core: "(Do you really have to say that in a time like this?)."
So, you were in a rush?"
Cody: "Yeah."
Core: "Why?"
Cody: "Cuz I didn't want to get noticed by them."
Core: "By them? Be more specific."
Franziska: "Use your logic, Mr. Rect. He did not want to be seen by the defendant because she had a gun. Therefore, if she saw the witness, she would have murdered the witness as well."
Core: "Nice theory, but I find that impossible. What's her motive to kill a ten year old boy? He didn't do anything, but take pictures."
Franziska: "Grrr..."
Judge: "That's right. The prosecution's objection is sustained."
Franziska: "Grrr, Mr. Rect."
Core: "(That should give me some leads). Now where we? You said 'them,' but be more specific."
Cody: "I was running away from...that guy."
Core: "'That guy?'"
Judge: "Tell us more about this guy you are talking about."
Cody: "He wanted my camera! I'm sure he took my camera after I fainted!"
Core: "What do you think about this, Ema?"
Ema: "Hm...I think I remember."
Core: "You do!? What do you remember?"
Ema: "I remember...a plant guy."
Core: "A plant guy?"
Ema: "Yeah, he keeps calling me 'pretty flower' or something like that."
Core: "'Pretty flower,' huh...what's his name?"
Ema: "That's what I'm trying to remember. I think it has something to do with this flyer."
Core: "A flyer? You mean this 'Stranger Girl' flyer?"
Ema: "I think so. Read it. I think it should give us some clues."
Core: "Hey, Ema. Whose fingerprints are these on the camera?"
Ema: "...Oh! I remember now! That plant guy! S-Sonny Light!"
Core: "He was the guy who took Cody's camera, right?"
Ema: "Yes, yes! I remember now! He took his camera because Cody had a better picture of the crime scene. Both of them took pictures, but unfortunately, Sonny Light's picture was half shaded, so he wanted to trade cameras. Cody refused, ran for his life, and hid behind the bushes to double-check if the crime scene is still enact and to see if he's not in sight with Sonny Light. After the shootings, he fainted, and Sonny found Cody lying there. So he took his camera and hid it at Salty Clear Waters."
Core: "That's where you found the camera?"
Ema: "Mhm. Now go, Rexie. Time for you to shine."
Core: "Here goes nothing.
He wanted your camera? What for? (Don't lie, Cody. Or else another turn will happen...)."
Cody: "Um...he wanted it for a better picture."
Core: "Why is that?"
Cody: "It's for a contest that's happening this month."
Core: "A contest?"
Cody: "Yeah, a contest for snapping for the best stranger girls out there. The winner will get $10,000 bucks!"
Judge: "That's some contest."
Cody: "I really wanted to win, but now my camera is in police possession."
Core: "So, the reason why you rushed and hid in the bushes is to hide from that guy, correct?"
Cody: "Yeah."
Core: "Did you see the actual crime scene?"
Franziska: "Don't make me laugh, Mr. Rect. Of couse he did. That's why he's here on this very stand."
Core: "Oh really? I have proof that shows that this witness did not see the actual crime scene."
Franziska: "What!? But-!"
Core: "No more stuttering foolish words from you, Ms. von Karma. This is where you will beg for mercy!"
Franziska: "How dare you-"
Core: "Enough, Ms. von Karma. First, you completely wasted the detective, and now you wasted your time battling against me with a witness who never witnessed the scene."
Franziska: "Then show us proof! Show us the evidence that he did not see the scene!"
Franziska: "..."
Judge: "..."
.................................................
Ema: "What's that, Rexie?"
Judge: "Yes. What indeed is that?"
Franziska: "Hah! Foolish fool. That black paper doesn't solve anything."
Core: "Or does it?"
Franziska: "Wh-what are you saying?"
Core: "Take a closer look at this photo. As you can see, you can see three faded figures."
(The photo is all dark, but it shows 3 figures that somewhat sticks out to the picture.)
Judge: "And what are you saying here?"
Core: "Pictures like this happens when two camera flashes combine together. It makes the picture all black due to the radioactive activities that I can't explain by words."
Ema: "I can!"
Core: "Um...later. (Her eyes are sparkling as she is eager to answer it)."
Judge: "So what? He took a picture, doesn't that mean he actually saw the crime scene."
Core: "Unfortunately, he didn't. Let's recall the witness's testimony, shall we?"
(Cody: "...I quickly took a picture. After that, I fainted. That's all I remember)
Core: "He took a picture, which was this picture we are looking at right now. After he took the picture...he fainted. Sadly, that's all we can get out of this witness. Is that right, Ms. von Karma?"
Franziska: "Grrrr, you'll pay for this."
Judge: "I see. We claim that this witness did not see the actual crime. What do you have to say, Ms. von Karma?"
Franziska: "Grrr, very clever of you, Mr. Rect. Very-Clever."
Core: "Thanks...? (Was that a compliment?)."
Ema: "Nice job, Rexie! That was incredible!"
Core: "Thanks. (Now that is a compliment.)."
Franziska: "That kid didn't do anything. I'd like to call on my next witness."
Judge: "Very well."
Core: "(Why is that the judge is very quick on Ms. von Karma? Does he have any bad history with her? I wonder...). ...ACHOO!"
Sonny: "Bless you, sick flower."
Core: " Thanks-OW!"
Franziska: "Be quiet, Mr. Rect! You shouldn't be grinning at a time like this. I should be. Now then-"
Judge: "ACHOOOOOOO"
Sonny: "Bless you, veteran flower."
Judge: "Why thank you-OW!"
Franziska: "You too!"
Judge: "But-OW!"
Franziska: "*Glare*"
Judge: "..."
Core: "(He looks very, very frightened. I guess I went far on Franziska's bad side. Am I THAT good to be a defense lawyer?)."
Ema: "I don't get why some people are sneezing. Is the pollen level really high in here? I don't see any flowers around here...except THAT guy, himself."
Franziska: "Before anyone interrupts, quickly state your name and occupation."
Sonny: "As you wish, pretty-fierce flower. The name is Sonny Light. College student attending Piggie N. Chlorie Stramo. Currently studying plants."
Franziska: "Enough with the flowers and testify on what you saw during the crime scene."
Sonny: "Let's not be in a hurry, rushed flower. I'll testify."
Ema: "Now that I remember this part of the investigations, let's take this chance to lead into an advantage."
Core: "Alright. (Teamwork. I'm going to love this time of the trial.)."
What I Saw During The Crime Scene:
Sonny: "I was just walking towards the Clear Sky, taking a look at the police doing some investigating. Then, I saw the kid-brat flower wandering around quickly in the bushes. I ran to him and asked what he was taking pictures of. It's true that I asked him to trade cameras and chased him, but I couldn't keep up with him. So instead, I saw the crime scene with my own eyes, and took pictures. I thought it was just an act, but no! It was real! I was freaked out and ran away to hide in the bushes. After everything cooled down, I left to turn in my photos."
Judge: "Intriguing. So you are not the only one who was in panic."
Sonny: "It was a scary scene."
Core: "(Men these days, why can't we get the hold of ourselves. Especially with that prosecutor glaring at me.)."
Judge: "Mr. Rect, you may begin your cross-examine the witness."
Core: "There's something fishy in this testimony. Can you feel it, Ema?"
Ema: "Yeah, I can feel it, too. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"
Core: "This picture..."
Ema: "Just what I was holding onto..."
Core: "..."
Ema: "..."
Core: "...OH! Oh, sorry. Your hand was soft. Heh..."
Ema: "Now, let 'em have it!"
Core: "Alright! Here goes!
Where were you when you saw the scene?"
Sonny: "Well, I chased the kid, lost him, then I ended up in the tree sections."
Core: "Wait a minute...you said 'tree section' of Clear Sky?"
Sonny: "Yup. There's bush section, tree section, flower section, and grass section."
Core: "(That's new to hear)."
Ema: "Don't look at me! I don' remember that!"
Core: "But you said that you remembered!"
Ema: "Only the investigations part. Hee hee."
Core: "(Gah, I should have went with her. Dang leg wouldn't let me walk.). Could you describe us the locations of the sections?"
Sonny: "Sure thing. Can anyone give me a paper?"
Judge: "Here, use my blank sheet of paper."
Core: "(What's the use of a blank sheet of paper for the judge!?)."
Sonny: "Alright here's the diagram. The bottom right corner of the paper is the entrance of Clear Sky. The bush section is north, the tree section is south, the grass section is east, and the flower section is west. It's pretty large if you set foot on Clear Sky itself."
Judge: "Intriguing. I would like to see this location after this trial. It catches my interest!"
Sonny: "I know, right? I usually go there for the flowers."
Core: "(Men...no, I must resist!). Anyways...you say that you were taking pictures at the tree section, correct?"
Sonny: "Yup."
Core: "And you thought it was an act, but instead, it was a crime scene. A crime scene that scared you so much that you ran to the bushes?"
Sonny: "I ran straight towards the bushes."
Core: "I find that funny."
Franziska: "What's so funny about it, Mr. Rect.?"
Core: "Take a look at the diagram. The tree section is located south. Recalling on what the witness just said, he said he ran 'straight' to the bush section. Are you saying that you interfered the crime scene?"
Sonny: "O-Of course not! Why should I run towards something I was scared from?"
Core: "D-Don't ask me! It's you who should be answering."
Sonny: "Well, I did run in a path."
Core: "Say what?"
Sonny: "Gimme that diagram. You say that I was at the tree section and ran straight the bushes, which would interfere the crime scene. Well, it's obvious that the theory is wrong. BUT! I did run in a path that leads to the bush. Use your logic, Mr. Defense Flower. Show which path I ran to the bushes!"
Wait, what!?"
Core: "That's right, you ran east."
Sonny: "But that would lead to an open area!"
Core: "An open area, but can you realize that your location is invisible if you ran east?"
Sonny: "What do you mean?"
Core: "Remember the diagram the detective presented? It is shown here that the suspect is standing here. If you want to say that you ran west, then that means the suspect would have seen you running around the flower section!"
Sonny: "Oh! I get it! Man, I'm lucky!"
Core: "Rather, unlucky."
Sonny: "What?"
Franziska: "What are you saying, Mr. Rect?"
Core: "Unfortunately, this witness also...did NOT see the crime scene!"
Sonny: "What!?"
Franzska: "What!?"
Judge: "What!?"
*Crowd Mutter*
*GAVEL*
Judge: "Order! Order! Order! Mr. Rect! You will show evidence to the court in an instant!"
Core: "With pleasure, your honor."
Franziska: "Another picture?"
Judge: "But it's not darkened, but half of the picture is."
Core: "That is correct, your honor. This picture has been flashed by another flash. Now take a look at the time compared to the other darkened picture."
Judge: "Hm...they're..."
Franziska: "The same time!"
*Crowd Mutter*
*GAVEL*
Judge: "Order! Order! I will have order in the court! Mr. Rect!"
Core: "Yes, your honor?"
Judge: "I don't know what to say. You're having a good roll on this trial."
Ema: "Nice job, Rexie. You have leads from otehr people."
Core: "I guess, but that glaring woman over there must have something up her sleve...or she may have ran out of luck."
Ema: "Let's hope for the best."
Franziska: "Hmph, so what? Both of my witness took pictures of the crime scene. Both pictures are darkened. What does that mean?"
Core: "It means that both of your witnesses did not see the crime scene!"
Franziska: "But Sonny did see the scene! He took a picture, but he did not faint!"
Sonny: "Hold on a second, fierce-pretty flower. I forgot to mention something."
Franziska: "What is it?"
Sonny: "I was in panic. People who panic hardly ever conrtol themselves, therefore, I admit that I couldn't remember anything that moment nor have I seen the actual scene."
Franziska: "Y-You mean..."
Core: "That both of your witness did not witness anything but flashes and dazes."
Judge: "Witness! Is that true!?"
Sonny: "Sadly, yes. I apologize for the time wasted."
Franziska: "F-Fools! How could this possibly happen!? Go away, witness!"
Sonny: "Haha, sorry 'bout that, fierce-pretty flower. It's the truth. Deal with it."
Franziska: "Grrrrrr!"
Core: "(Looks like I'm waaaaaaay ahead of her this time.)."
Judge: "Very well, witness. Before you are dismissed, I would like to ask the defense a question."
Core: "Y-Yes, your honor?"
Judge: "About that camera. You said you found it at Salty Clear Waters."
Core: "...pssst. Ema, help me out here! (Tell me you remember!)."
Ema: "Leave it to me, Rexie."
Core: "Wait, what?"
Ema: "May I explain, your honor?"
Judge: "Why, yes, of course."
Ema: "I found it at Salty Clear Waters. It was burried by sand. I happen to investigate the area before it was polic property. With approval of Detective Gumshoe, I am free to do so. There were lumps in some places, but under one of the lumps contained this camera and this flyer. I examined the camera and claimed it to be Cody Hackin's camera. The flyer is what both of the witnesses were taking pictures for. Also, this camera had two fingerprints on it. Both Cody Hackins and Sonny Light. I found out that Sonny Light found the fainted Cody Hackins, took his camera, and hid it at Salty Clear Waters. Luckily, I found it and came in good use."
Judge: "I see. With approval of the police, you are good."
Ema: "We are good?"
Core: "I think he was concerned about forged evidene. Without police approval, we wouldn't be here right now."
Ema: "O-Oh...I didn't know."
Core: "It's okay. We got lucky."
Judge: "Very well, witness. You are dismissed."
Sonny: "Yes, veteran flower."
Judge: "It was quite a feat. Both witness did not see the actual crime scene, therefore, I can not hand down my verdict today. Both prosecution and defense will continue to investigate and find relevant, rather not irrelevent, matters for this case. Any objections?"
Core: "No, your honor."
Franziska: "...no."
Judge: "Very well, court is adjourned."
*GAVEL*
Date: June 2 Time: 2:05 PM Location: District Court - Defendant Lobby No. 1Ema: "That was amazing, Rexie! We teared up that trial!"
Core: "We did. I was surprised."
Lana: "Nice job, Mr. Rect. You have improved a lot since you moved to Mr. Wright's place."
Core: "Indeed, I have."
Gumshoe: "Wowowowow! That was a blast, Mr. Rect! I never knew you had the smarts in your mind."
Core: "Heh heh, thanks Gumshoe."
Ema: "Too bad we didn't get the innocent verdict, yet."
Core: "But we will, don't worry. I..."
Ema: "Yes, Rexie?"
Core: "I want to thank you...for the work you have done for me."
Ema: "Oh! It was nothing, Rexie."
Core: "No, really. Without you, I would have been gone for good. Without your help, I wouldn't know what was going on in this case. Thank you, Ema."
Ema: "Your welcome, Rexie! As they always say, teamwork."
Core: "That's right! Teamwork. Isn't that right, Ms. Skye?"
Lana: "Of course. You and Ema grew a great potential of teamwork. I was impressed of how it grew so fast."
Ema: "..."
Core: "(Looks like Ema is still having that hatred towards her sister. I hope it dies out, soon.). Well, let's investigate, shall we?"
Ema: "Yeah! There has to be more!"
Gumshoe: "Alright, you do that. Ms. Skye, let's go back to the detention center."
Lana: "Okay. If you need me, just drop by the detention center."
Core: "Yes, ch-*ahem*, Ms. Skye!"
