After reading some info regarding how sprites are made, I decided to do a little experiment involving taking the HD/artbook sprite of a character, downscaling it and reducing the colors. I used Desiree's normal sprite, to be precise.
Here's the result:
Image
Left: original sprite Right: downscaled HD sprite
The edits I made to the HD sprite, aside from the downscale and the color reduction, were pretty minimal and most of them involved the outline

I like how the sprite looks like an Apollo justice sprite.

But there aren't HD sprites of Apollo or any of their characters

Hey! They came out really nicely! I'm surprised at how similar things like the shading are!

I think it might be because this is how AA "sprites" were essentially made, and also because the HD sprites are pretty much the artbook illustrations (which I assume is what the GBA/DS sprites were made from) animated.

Mind if you tell me your process of making this? I'm interested in trying it myself. (I tried scaling down Maya's HD sprites to DS size.)

I used Photoshop's Save for web option to resize the sprite and reduce the color count to that of the original sprite. Then I opened up the result in Photoshop again and touched it up a tad.
EDIT:
While I was scrolling through my images folder, a render of Apollo pointing caught my eye so I decided to process it the same way as the Desiree sprite
Image
Unfortunately, the render was a jpg so some artifacts found their way in, I removed them however.
And that's pretty much all the edits I did to this. I would have fixed the outline too, but I guess I didn't feel like doing that (See the reason I chose my title yet?).
EDIT 2:
Did a cleanup anyway

A bit different from what I usually do, but I always had a gripe with how Oldbag looked in AAI. So I went ahead and edited her sprite so as to make it look more faithful to her original one.

(By the way, I hope this doesn't count as double/tripple posting)
