Pretty hard to see the details. I know making hair that sticks down into the face is hell to sprite probberly (
), so I see how you went there. Also, his expression (especially his eyes) are quite off. It might look accurate zoomed in, but not when you look at it normally. I had the same problem with the older ema smiley, take a look at that for reference. Also, his mouth should be more visable (larger), and perhaps 1-2 pixels lower. His 'ears' should be extended upwards quite a bit more, and his 'normal' hair should be curled slightly upwards at the end of them. Remember, when spriting smileys you need to overdo the details.
edit:
Ah, second one is quite better. Biggest problem now is the fact that it needs shading to make it look like him. This seems pretty darn hard to do without the actual non-compressed sprite. Also, I'd say you could make the ear-thinggys slightly longer, and the mouth needs to be connected a bit better. Also, his eyes. They look better now, but white on yellow is rather hard to see (
), so I'd personally make them all-black, but that is of course a matter of style (look at the original smileys for the style
) much closer now, though, for sure.
