Anyway, your sprites are OK, great anims though, but save your sprites as .PNGs before animating them, it'll make 'em look a whole lot better quality (shameless plug approaching ---->) take for example my sprites (click my siggy) or perhaps Tajiri Ami's those are PNGs, thus they lack blurriness and graininess, plus you can work on them in more than one sitting.

To answer your question GIMP is an image manipulation program (colloquially known as the Poor Man's Photoshop) it's free and somewhat easy to use. I personally use it for animations, as its process for animation is quick and easy.
