This is gonna sound really silly, but...
Bowser's castle in SMB3 (the NES version). When I was a little kid, the overworld icon for that level was just so... unsettling.
That plus the overworld theme for World 8... I had to have my dad beat that level for me.
This was about 8 or 9 years ago, mind you.

I know it's a board game, but this board game used to absolutely terrify me as a kid! I was so scared and I had nightmares about it.

In terms of video games, Majora's Mask scared me! The timed factor and the moon and the look of the Deku scrub was pretty eerie. I'd still play it, but combined with the fact that I was all alone in the basement, it made me a little nervous.

Silent Hill 2 and Amnesia still scare me a little, lol

One of the things I was scared of was the slide in Tall Tall Mountain in Super Mario 64. When you slide, there is a dead end you have to avoid. And there is a giant skull there. I was always terrified of that skull. :beef: But about a year later, I finally conquered my fear and beat the slide. :edgey:

I couldn't beat Super Mario 64 for the longest time because I used to be scared of the final Bowser battle. Just the music and the colors being so much more different and dark than from what I was used to up to this point was to much for me, and I didn't touch it for a while. Did eventually beat it though, so there's that.

There are quite a few scary things in Ghost trick, especially near the end. Parts of the background story, for example, balances a thin line between scary and sad. What scared me though, was the claustrofobic part near the end, where you're cramped in an enclosed space.

Hearing the soundtrack that was played at that moment still makes me a bit on edge. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFXOJ1mkKtI And, of course, the nightmare fuel that takes place if the villain notices you at a time when they shouldn't and turns to the fourth wall.

I finished the game by evening, read the Fridge horor and Nightmare fuel pages at tv tropes until night, and then thought about it for a long time while trying to go to sleep. I hate (and love, at times) how scary things becomes 100 times scarier when it's dark outside.

The level in Serena Beach with all the electric manta rays scared the snot out of me as a kid. I would have nightmares about that level.

Higurashi no naku koro ni, while technically not a game, is probably the only thing that has made me genuinely scared. Although believe me when I say I actually stopped watching a playthrough of it (it's a visual novel without any choices to make, after all) because I just couldn't stand the music anymore, coupled with the rather slow progression and repetitive arcs.

Oh, and the giant manta ray from Mario 64. I really hate rays.

If you really want a scary game like Higurashi but better than I suggests playing the Corpse Party series.

The redeads in Wind Waker scarred me for life. At the time I didn't knew what they were and since they were blue, like the whole lightning and background, I jumped and pressed start as soon as it jumped on link. Damn I nearly screamed that day. XD

Just recently, a friend introduced me to the difficult puzzle game Irisu Syndrome. The music is rather relaxing and the characters are pretty generic... at first. Then I played a bit more and did a little research online after several attempts of no more than a few levels.

Thank god I didn't play this alone in the dark. Where's the brain bleach?

I mean, I'm usually not the type to get scared over video games. I've laughed off Silent Hill's pyramid head. Slenderman's become too much of a meme to impact me. And yet, a cute albino bunny girl who dresses as a witch is enough to creep me out for a good while.

Nonetheless, the nerves do settle after a bit when you're actively engaged in this game. Dang, I suck at it.

There's an English patch for the game, in case anyone's interested. As the post in the link says, don't spoil yourself unless you really want to.

Edit: Ah, right, Resident Evil wasn't horror. My bad.
