I'm wondering why they only show us the "9" door in the trailer.. hm..
Also:
Quote:
The word "ambidextrous" is derived from the Latin roots ambi-, meaning "both," and dexter, meaning "right" or favorable. Thus, "ambidextrous" is literally "right / favorable on both sides." The term ambidexter in English was originally used in a legal sense of jurors who accepted bribes from both parties for their verdict.

Any ideas of what this will have to do with "betrayal"?
My theory:
Spoiler:
"Both favorable" could refer to the two choices the players seems to have: cooperation or betrayal? Perhaps they are told that both options can get them out of there. Or perhaps it has something to do with the bracelets. As someone pointed out, there are room for two digits on the watches.

Interesting it says "Let my game begin" and they also show Zero, and the rabbit. "Not a sequel" my ass.

Well, in the trailer is also the term "prisoner's dilemma" which could be part of the game.

"The prisoner's dilemma is a fundamental problem in game theory that demonstrates why two people might not cooperate even if it is in both their best interests to do so."

Who knows? Also, given the description of the game as "a game of betrayal", a thought occurs to me: what if the bracelets aren't linked to a bomb in the person wearing them, but rather to a bomb in a different person? If one were to fail the RED/DEAD test, they would be killing one other player and guaranteeing another's safety.

In some ways I dont want to read anymore.. I mean I did read reviews of 999 but didnt read much otherwise, certainly nothing to spoil it.
Maybe I just feel spoiled as most of us know all about 999 now.
Information is coming VERY fast - I only knew about its exsistance yesterday and we're getting screens already.
Are we sure its a completely new game, and not a kind of Director's Cut of 999 (think the DS version of Broken Sword).

If it's not region locked, but I honsetly don't know a lot about the Vita either :jake:

That's good news! I hope this encourages Aksys to release the game in Europe.

@samboo1: The PSVita is Sony's new handheld console, the successor for the PSP. It's not region locked, so you can import a game from the US (or even Japan) and play it on an European console.

Honestly, region locking the 3DS might be one of the dumbest moves Nintendo's ever made.

Dunno. But I was just thinking about how some European versions of Wii games (eg No More Heroes) were censored compared to the US.
If 999/the sequel were to be released in the UK I'd think a 15 rating may be right.
Part of me hopes (in a way) not much is shown, that was partly what made 999 so creepy, the well written text, those piano cues...

Okay, now I'm interested.
Spoiler:
One of the "players" is a robot, right? Does this mean he'll be bound by the Three Laws? Because if he is, then he basically can't harm any of the other players or himself. Which is pretty interesting considering this is a "game of betrayal", apparently.

Also, the Latin is wrong. "Tu fui, ego eris"? That doesn't mean anything. "Tu" means "you" (second person singular), "fui" means "(I) was" (first person singular), so it's something like "you was", which makes no sense. "Ego" means "I", while "eris" means "will be" (second person singular). It'd make sense if it was "Ego fui, tu eris" ("I was, you will be"). I wonder if that's intentional or not (having the personal pronouns swapped could have some significance, maybe?).

Post subject:  Re: 999 Sequel Announced (3DS/Vita)

^^ There's clearly a number 9 door in the screenshot. Assuming the REDs work the same way, killing everyone else wouldn't exactly be beneficial.

The prisoner's dilemma interests me. Do you think communication between the players might be limited somehow? Or is it all just related to the theme of betrayal?

Okay, so Phi has the number nine bracelet in official artwork and her bracelet shows number three as a pair, so it can be assumed she's 9 (or 6 :P) and paired to 3.

I think Sigma is probably 3. Not just because the two are kind of obviously going to be shipped together (I just hope they don't recreate the Junpei/Akane mushiness), but because:
Phi = 21st letter of Greek alphabet = digital root 3
Sigma = 18th letter of Greek alphabet = digital root 9

It just fits.

So will there be one person left without a pair? Or will someone die before the game actually begins?

Post subject:  Re: 999 Sequel Announced (3DS/Vita)

You think Sigma and GirlSanta (Phi) will be the Junpei and Akane of this game?
I dont think theres any way this won't relate to 999.

Author:  Midnight Jasper [ Thu Aug 25, 2011 10:13 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: 999 Sequel Announced (3DS/Vita)

Well, it's not really based on much, only that they're the hero and heroine and given that Phi seems to know him.
Looking at the picture of the 9 door, the RED appears to be a little different. For one thing, it doesn't look like there's a place that will add 'stars' for when players scan themselves in. So maybe the 3-5 people rule has been changed somehow.

Author:  DeMatador [ Thu Aug 25, 2011 10:45 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: 999 Sequel Announced (3DS/Vita)

The Junpei/June "mushiness" was glorious! GLORIOUS I TELL YOU!

That Memento Mori line so sounds like an anagram. Even if it isn't, it still is interesting: Memento mori is latin for "Remember you will die", as in "remember that you are mortal". And I read the lion eating the sun may be related to alchemy.
Tu fui, ego eris = you were, I will be? It's mistranslated, but makes some sort of sense. If literally translated it could mean... "You I was, me you will be", as in "I was you, you'll be me".

Also, it seems everyone's got their own number and a pair this time. Phi's got bracelet 9 and pair 3, which is probably Sigma. That's most probably the meaning of "Ambidex Edition": every player needs their bracelet and another player's to play, so they have two "hands". Ambidexter, as we all know, is the term used to describe people who can write with/use both hands with the same ease. Interesting tidbit: if that's the case, then 1 player will get killed off as demonstration just like in 999 (probably not a spoiler), since you can't pair 9 players amongst themselves: that would form 3 pairs of 2 and one group of 3. Killing off a needless player at the beginning would leave the Nonary Game at a clean 4 pairs of 2.

In this need-pair-to-survive scenario is the case, maybe this new edition of the Nonary Game would require at some point (or points!) for every player to make a decision: to cooperate with their partner or to betray them. Most probably, considering the nature of Zero's game, the cooperation would put both cooperating player's lives in danger, and betraying their pair would be an easy way out, so most players would be tempted to the latter option, instead of risking their lives for their pair's sake.

...WAIT. That could give some sense to the literal translation of "Tu fui, ego eris"! If it does mean "You I was, me you will be", or "I was you, you will be me", you could say it means "I am you and you are me", as in we both are the same person! According to my theory, in the Ambidex Edition of the Nonary Game two people have to work together to survive, or "be the same person"...

MAN, I already love this game!

The laws of robotics are interesting for a plot twist. Is Robo even a robot? Further, would a party member have any qualms about betraying the robot to save themselves?

Interesting about the pairing concept. Originally, 999's concept was to have characters handcuffed to one another, but they changed it because it was too similar to a movie that came out at the time. Looks like this is a little workaround to that.

9 Numbers, one twice. 9 Bracelets, one arm twice. Lotus 2.0 would be the 10th, so she's out. Then again, it is odd that we've got a 0, but no 9 bracelet. Hmm... Perhaps Lotus's bracelet is #9 but she dies like the 9th Man. The ninth bracelet is a 'very powerful ally' and would make the game too easy... but why then do we have 0? After all 9 and 0 have the same digital root.
