How about just have no items at all and fight with just skill like the game should be played. :yogi:

Cept by default items stage hazards and platforms are turned ON ergo: that's how the game SHOULD be played.

No items at all. The match should be determined by how well a play can use his character tothe best of their abilities without the need of help. How a true smash player should be.

THE ONLY WAY TO TRULY PLAY SMASH BROS IS TO NOT PLAY AT ALL!
Really, though, there is no "true" way. Everyone just happens to have preferences.

So your abilities are entirely limited by a common game mechanic that's been in there since the beginning? What, so a true smash player only mains Fox (and/or Falco), no items, final destination? I get that some characters are objectively better (that tends to happen in fighters where gamer complacency happens), but there's no logical reason to not use anything you want to as long as it's provided in the game.

Anyway, I just really don't like this "true x" BS. It's not only a fallacy (not only its own fallacy, but it also runs into the fallacy of the pile: where is the dividing line on a true smash player- and by extension, gamer?), but it's frankly a sign of blind obstinance as opposed to actual skill.

If you have a preference for no items and final destination, that's fine- but your preference (even if the most vocal smash fans agree) isn't indicative of the entire audience. If this were a real tournament with prizes involved, maybe we'd play it closer to how it's played in actual tournaments (where you'll see that while items aren't used in the finals, they are used in at least the quarter finals).

Like I said before I Luke having items on. A fighter needs to be adaptable and adjust to a changing battlefield. In essence its a whole other form of skill and introduces a tactical element to the battlefield.

Oh he's likely to get that item before me how can I deal with that using what's close to hand? Can you reflect it? Is there a better item near you that can counter him? Can you outmanouver him and render the item worthless? Are you better off just staying clear? If so what's the best escape route?

There's a whole other layer of play and skill introduced with items.

Hey, I noticed that no one mentioned anything about final smashes.

Are final smashes allowed in this tournament? I'm pretty sure that everyone who is taking part in the tournament might need to voice their opinion on whenever final smashes should be allowed in the tournament.

In my opinion, final smashes is okay as long as there's more than one player on the field. But 1 vs. 1? Most likely not allowed, because it would be very unfair to the other player.

Love final smashes!

Perhaps establish a rule that if you kill with it play stops until it ends. Thinking about the likes of pikachu and sonic who have the potential to deal damage after they ko someone with a final smash.

You all sound like a bunch of wanna-be MLGs who wanna be in a Smash Bros tournament.

While we are removing final smashes, do you want us to pull numbers out of a hat to decide what set character we have to play as? Any other thing that make Smash Bros fun that you want out of your MLG game?

The rest are only bells and whistles. PSH. Plus, all the other characters are to big to be in the game are scrub characters. Psh.
/sarcasm

But in all seriousness, while I like being jokey, I'd rather not win the argument through insults. It's fine, even if they are "wannabes", as it's admirable to have a goal. We just have a difference of opinion. If the rules prohibit someone's enjoyment, then they to try to convince us otherwise or just not participate in the tournament.

This argument is pointless, anyway. Why not make compromises? Why just have one tournament upon which everything hinges?

List of possible compromises that may include (but aren't limited to) to discuss:
- Tier the rounds so that some stages are only used for doubles, some stages are only used for free for all, some stages are only used for duels. Same with items.
- My idea of having Fluxx-like rule changes.
- Have separate tournaments. Tournament A is for No Items Final Destination, Tournament B has everything, Tournament C has a mix, etc.

We don't have to limit ourselves, yeah? We are gamers! Our media and its fans are defined by its penchant for creativity and resourcefulness. Let's put that to good use, and work to find an amicable solution that we can all agree to!

A new stage for the Wii U version, Gamer, based the minigame of the same name from Game & Wario:

Image

Much like in the original game, you have to stay hidden while 9Volt's mom checks up on you. If she catches you, however...

Image

Game over man, game over! A scolding and a likely instant kill await you.

Also, here's the boxart and Amazon preorder page for the Wii U controller bundle:

Image

As for the tournament, perhaps we're going about this the wrong way. We should probably just have a vote using the in-game designations to keep things simple, since they seem to cover the biggest issues you guys have been discussing.

For Fun: If you want to reach the broadest range possible, going with this is probably the best option. Items (on standard appearance levels), stage hazards, custom movesets allowed.

For Glory: If you want it to be a battle of pure skill, these rules should be utilized. No items, Omega stages only, no custom movesets.

Pick one, whichever gets the most votes will be used for the tournament. We can tweak any additional details (final smashes, disabling OP items, etc.) once the more pressing issues are resolved.

And finally, I'd like to remind everyone that there is no right or wrong way to play Smash Bros. It's fine to have preferences, but that doesn't give you the right to insult those that don't agree with you. Keep it civil.

The rules and participants regarding the tournament are beginning to take form. Another update so you guys also know what's going on:

Participating players: Mijumaru, Pierre, Doitsu, Klonoa, Alonso, Prof Yoshi, SquareMB, Sumguy, Blademaster Orca, BlueAttorney4ever, kwando1313, Bad Player, Genodragon (and company?) & myself, which amounts to 14 players.

Current rules:
Match type: stock matches with 3 lives per match.
Matches will be 1 vs 1 player
Items: On.
Banned Items: Beetle, Galaga swarm
Buffs are a no go! (if they exist)
Stage select: Players are allowed to pick stages themselves. If the players cannot agree a 'final destination stage' will be chosen first. After the first match the loser is allowed to pick the next stage, all options included.
Custom move sets: allowed

Bob-ombs are powerful, but not game breaking. Final Smashes are, but it kind of a guilty pleasure for me. It's too good to give up if the items are on in my opinion.
Face your emptiness don't be afraid. The danger is often smaller than your fear.

Maybe for some, sometimes it's completely bearable or avoidable. Plus they are a great deal more fun than the beetle or Galaga swarm.

It wasn't objectification at all. Peach's undergarments were never presented in a sexual way in SSB.

The Wii U version gets the outlines too:

Image

The difference here is that no matter the distance of the characters on screen, the width of the outlines remains the same. In other words, the further away the camera pulls (and the smaller the fighters appear), the more visible the outlines will appear to be.

Here's an update I've been looking forward to for quite some time now, the Wii U version exclusive stage based on Star Fox Assault, Orbital Gate:

Image

The stage begins aboard the Great Fox. Team Star Fox defends the gate from missiles, which can be used as platforms for a short while:

Image

Eventually the team goes through the gate, where the fighting shifts to atop the arwings as they proceed:

Image

Sakurai describes the stage in general as a "wild and hectic ride", so while it's probably not the most fair stage to fight on, it looks pretty damn awesome to me.

Pierre wrote:

That's a feature in the 3DS version as well, isn't it? That's how no one's locked into using their matching alt color to their team color anymore.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't this fly in the face of their policy of "Handheld stages for 3DS" "Wii stages for Wii U"? Wasn't Star Fox assault a DS game?
