Hmmm... I found the English version to be... "too poppy-ish" for me. It was nice. But that's it. Wasn't until I played the Japanese version (or even heard Koda Kumi's English version) that it felt "better" to me.

Well, the song was good by itself, but it probably made much of its impact from the Shuyin/Lenne tragedy playing out during the performance.

Not really... at least, not for me. Mostly cause the text didn't seem to deal with the tragedy going on in the background.

It's a typical tragic love you find all over the place... Romeo and Juliette and all.

Ever consider that it's done all over the place because it works?

Oh! Brickwork housing! Haven't seen that before...it must suck because it's done everywhere.

That's the sort of implication you give off.

I'm just saying, after a while, because you've seen it so often, the emotional impact lessens. After a while, the tragic lovers on opposite ends that have a tragic ending... it runs together and you just don't care anymore cause you know how it ends. Why cry over something you've seen so often, it leaves you cold?

PS: They knew they couldn't escape, so they rather willingly accepted that they were gonna die at that point together. Enough R+J for me.

I'd say it's more about how it's done rather than what's being done. Take the scenario "character X loses character Y, who was close to him." for example. In Game A, character Y dies almost instantly after being introduced. The audience doesn't care. In Game B, both character X and character Y were fleshed out in a meaningful way so that when character Y dies, it leaves much more of an impact.
That said, I haven't seen the tragic romance you guys are talking about, but I'm assuming that it was done in a way that made the story seem fresh. But seriously, was it done properly, or was it done in some over-the top cheesy fashion?

Well to be honest Romeo and Juliet was in love but it was that sort of Forbidden Love. Sort of reminds me of Dragon Quest 8. In the library at Castle Trodain while it was still cursed there was a book about Trodian and Argonia prince and princess that fell in love but it never happened because I think both of them or one of them died so both castles agreed that the princess and the prince of both kingdoms must be married.

The latter one I might still get emotionally invested it. But it feels so rare these days. Most of the time, you lose the character so early on (and I count several hours as "early") that you just plain don't care that they died, because you don't know the character as a person beyond the mentions of their personality. I don't know what it is. Maybe the developers want to start the game with a big impact or they think every player starts caring for their character after five minutes...

Oh, I see. So end result = same story

I'm gonna go around saying Titanic was the same plot as The Day After Tomorrow because a bunch of people died tragically due to a nasty weather event.
