Post subject:  Don't Feed the Spambots; Observe and Report

I hate Spambots just as much as anyone else on this forum, but we have a protocol of taking care of it.

If you see spambots, use the report button at the bottom of the post to let us know there is a problem. This alerts any mod or admin of the spam and is much better than using the pm box (which can get full).

Image

The system only allows a post to be reported once, and a message will display saying it's already been reported.

Then you just have to wait, unfortunately. We can't be on here 24/7, so be patient and the problem will be taken care of as soon as someone logs on and sees the problem.

-------------------------------------------

Please, don't quote things in a spam message. It preserves what the spammer wants long after we've deleted his post. Some hapless person will click on that link and I don't want to think will happen to them after that, but a Weird Al song comes to mind.

Really, all you need to do is report and move on. There doesn't need to be discussion about who will report the message or any attempt to joke around with the spambot. After you report it, just pretend it's not there. It will eventually cease to exist.

Well done to the CR team for taking care of that one quickly.

Though the report button is a little ambiguous, I looked about but didn't see anything that said report. The button's purpose only becomes clear when it's highlighted and it is really small.

Though now we know we can better fight the spam!

At first I thought it said "Don't feed the trolls"
And I was like "You took my only food, now I'm gonna starve"[/patrick]
But then I saw it was about spam bots.

I think your post doesn't emphatize enough on the report button/indicator, Loony. The report button deserves much more praise than that.

Am I the only mod that feels aroused every time I see the report indicator next to a thread's title?

I'm not gonna touch that with a ten foot pole.

Our pleasure.

Learning through fun is more efficient than through... not fun. According to some millennia-old Greek dude.

But seriously guys if you see a spambot shoot him a flaming arrow. We'll see the smoke and go shoot the bastard dead.

...The arrow is the report.

...And us shooting means... you know.

I'll just leave the image of DeMat "shooting" up to interpretation. Because this is entertaining enough on it's own.

Don't know if these are spambots or not, however, when loging on I noticed 5 registered members online, two being "Google [Bot]" and "Yahoo [Bot]".

That's a feature built into phpBB3, lets you know when popular spider bots are browsing the forums to update their search results.

The bots we don't like are indistinguishable from normal users.

Indeed. It is delicious. :gant-clap:

Reported, though. I've learned to do so with gusto.

Say, question, just out of curiosity.

When we've got a multiple post offender with one username, should we report one or all the posts? I've been reporting all of them at once, but it just occurred to me that that might not be necessary if it's one bot. (Also flood reporting possibly not being much better than flood spamming.)

When we delete a user we have to option to delete all their posts, so reporting once should be sufficient.

So is deletion twice as bad as a ban?

I was about to say the same thing. But then you sniped me snipping the spam bot.

I actually previously also caught a spam bot in the "New Weapon in the war against spam" topic. They're not smart. Either that, or they have a death wish.

You're giving the things too much credit, Wooster. Saying that spambots are stupid or that they have death wishes is like saying the stuff a cat hacks up seriously considers where it's hacked up or whether or not it wants to be cleaned up.

So yeah...

This guy

Has made one post, in the wrong area, with a legitimate complaint for the site.

He's also slipped in an ad for some training course in big-botlike fashion.

I'm confused as to whether we should ban him or not.

Post subject:  Re: Don't Feed the Spambots; Observe and Report

On a hunch, I plugged the more legitimate-looking content of Zoyla1's post into Google and found that someone else had made that same post, word-for-word, in 2007. We've got a spambot on our hands.
