That's nothing. You should see the ones that post 30.

Of course, I'd rather have those spambots then 30 1-posters. Cleanup is a lot simpler the first way.

Yeah nine posts count for nothing when banning just wipes all the posts at once.

Only thing to be vigilant about is that they don't hit 50+ posts.

Yeah, you're right. There are 3 spam bots right now nearing 10+ posts on the moment.

Has anyone else noticed that we spend more time on CR now talking about banning spambots than anything else?

I don't know why these spambots are bothering. :P

It's because it's so satisfying. Hell worst comes to worst we can become an organisation that outsources our members to other forums and exist solely to wipe bots from the world.

You wouldn't want a forum full of spam bots malicious posts. Removing spam is every forum admin's job.

So....This bot...

Well I think he's a bot, he's off topic, his name is random and his custom title matches his first topic title.

But....he claims to be Santa...and he doesn't post links...

So this latest batch of bots appear to be a cut above the rest - I had to think for a second whether they were legit users or not.

Then I remembered that no-one would be stupid enough to speak in German on an obviously English-language website.

We also had a legible advertisement in the wrong place... y'know, that kind of thing that is clearly a bot when you think about it but could pass for a legit-if-misguided user at first glance.

Do you think this one is a spambot? In a way it looks like one but at the same time it's so similar to a legit post, it's almost scary.

I've checked the link it's...legit it does lead to jokes about the police though I would still avoid it to be safe and there were talks about Gumshoes salary as a joke.

It's possibly a bot with incredible coincidence or a member with poor grasp of grammar and English.

That's one of the cleverer spambots: clever enough that the link is legit but it's still a bot.

I suppose the question is whether it's the spam part or the bot part that's the most offensive to the CR staff. Personally I figure no-one really wants adbots on their site.

I may be overdoing it slightly here actually on second thoughts: these really are so close to the wire that I'm not completely comfortable popping the BH but I'm still popping it. I'm going by experience here really.

As you wish, I spotted it earlier and considered it. As it wasn't doing harm I just left it alone in the off chance it was a person and in the likely chance, a harmless bot.

Better to err on the side of caution

All of the ones i've seen so far (including 3 I just took out) make it obvious they're bots with their posts and name.

EDIT: I'm starting to wonder how many are actually bots. It seems like they only post when there's only 1 or 2 people on who aren't mods (and maybe those of us with over 1,000 posts).

Another edit-6-26-12: Is it me or has the number of bots appearing dropped? I used to see at least one everytime I logged on.

Alright, how did a bot end up posting a topic in the Cosplay section? I thought they pretty much defaulted to posting under Bar Exam.

Once in a while they'll post on random boards. It's not unheard of. They just prefer the Bar Exam because it's the top most board, and therefore the one most likely to gain all the hits/traffic.

To be honest, it smells like a bot to me.

Its custom title is the same as its topic, and if you check its profile, the ICQ contact screen just shows that it supposedly works for an airline in Kuwait. Not to mention, it thinks that 'human' is also an occupation. (Yes, it could just be someone being cute, but bots will often list a strange value in a field while showing zero interest in the Ace Attorney series/video games/anime. Of course I don't include confused folks who really do think this is a website for court records.)

Yeah bots get real funny about that occupation one. Earlier on I banned one that had "Real" as it's occupation.

It looks like a bot since they typically set age 25+ and the profiles are similar to other bot ones. I'd err on the side of caution since it'sd not advertising and therefore not really harming anything but it's your call in the end.

A user who claims to be from the USA... but can't seem to spell or even speak English properly. Yes, yes, I know there are a few people from the USA incapable of spelling or proper usage of the English language. And to be fair, it's possible this user doesn't know that 'Regular Show' is the title of an actual TV program and is just sharing his/her/its own interests, but the oddly worded message and the posted link make it a bit suspicious.

He/she/it probably won't post again, but I'll leave it up to the admins/mods.

Post deleted. Honestly, I can't tell if it's a bot or not either. But in either case, the post violates our Thread Necroing rules by not only having nothing of value added, but something of utter irrelevance being added.

Good call bringing it to my/staff's attention though.

I'd ignore it, for now. Admittedly, the Russian text is a tell, but so far it's not trying to sell anything, so I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt that there 'may' be a real person behind the account.

Bots are getting insanely tricky, to the point I don't think they are bots anymore rather actual people trying to slip past the radar before leaving a bot as a sleeper agent.

Check this one out:http://www.forums.court-records.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=35000

He's got poor spelling and a linked advert in his title so bot right?

Then look at the one post he made.
On topic and relevant albeit generic and probably easy to do.

It is royally suspect, I admit. But suspicion isn't guilt. Let it be until it misbehaves. Remember there's an IP ban involved in a ban hammering. I'd rather not make mistakes by banning someone innocent. If that means a few bots slip through, that's fine. Sleeper bits are only a problem if we decided to block registration, which we aren't. You can ban hammer them if you are 100% sure but if there's doubt like this then don't.

So this guy

Another one of these ultra-suspicious users. His profile and Sig contain an ad link for some TV website. His posts are close to incomprehensible and he double posted too.

I swear it is the 'bot owners' posting basic accounts with a basic grasp of English.

Is there any way we could limit sigs to people who accomplish say....20 posts even. Most Bots never manage that and it would prevent these suspicious types from dropping suspicious links in their sigs even if they post 'normally'.

Sigs 'should' be disabled on posts until they're no longer a suspect. (You can still view them in the profile, makes it easier to verify if a bot or not)

Very weird case. This is the first time I've seen them use one of our smilies. If I had to guess… I'd say (s)he's a human from one of those spam farms you hear about periodically. The IP is from India, which doesn't help defer suspicion. On the other hand, India doesn't make much of a blip on CR's activity. So, who knows what this is. It's not organized like Russia. It appears to be a lone user, at this point at least.

See if you can find India on the list of top 25 nations on CR. Bonus points if you can tell which list is for the forums and which is the main site.

Well, we've got his 'cousin' over here, with a similar pattern for a username (but no sig URL), replying in the same thread. If anything, we can collect a third and then we'll have a complete set! :cody-talk:
