Yikes. Just got a couple who were making a post in almost every thread. One was up to 35 posts and the other 16.

Hey Woost, I know this topic was obviously made by a bot, but I don't think the premise of a topic like this would be bad. What I'm saying is, could we slam away this bot, but keep this thread and move it over into the Chatterbox part of the forum?
On April 3, 2016, Court Records Forums experienced a miracle upon that day.

IMO that's quite a bit of effort. But if you really wanted to, you could always begin a thread with that particular topic.

The erectile dysfunction pharmacy link in its signature only makes me want to 'slam it away' and nothing else.

I think dullahan1's got the right idea on this topic. The poster was totally bogus and worthy of a ban hammer, but the topic in question was actually kinda pleasant. So I changed the poster to someone who's never posted, and hasn't visited since 2008. Thus preserving the topic and keeping the overall, this is a new guy no one knows vibe, and permitting me to ban hammer the bloke.

Honestly, I've maybe swapped post owners maybe 6 times ever (Thats counting the 3 times observed/mentioned in this thread). Mostly when someone wants to take control over a thread after someone has disappeared and the project wants to move on in that person's absence.

It reallllly looks like a spam bot, but it wasn't trying to hawk anything. I settled for just deleting the post in question. If it's a person, nothing smart was lost. If it's a bot, it likely won't bother us again. If it does, ban hammer.

So guys, what do you think? Spambot or confused new user? :lana:

His signature contains stuff about roofs but it's not in his actual post. It could just be some really odd troll but that's kinda weird.

Oh, there are plenty who like to advertise in different languages. Japanese Coach purses, Polish online casinos... now they're starting up with Norwegian escort services.

I can understand "lawyer service" types stumbling across this site and getting confused, but that third one is practically the opposite of what should be here.

Just caught one of those that posts repeatedly while it was still doing it (along with another).
If one of those ever makes it to 50 posts we'll be forced to deal with it until a mod gets on.

We need a technical solution to this problem.

I know just the one, custom questions!

Just asking new users a basic question that any member of the site should know or at least be able to find out trivially drastically reduces spam.

They work because it's something that the bot herders must manually configure for each site. And they don't bother, they just aim for low hanging fruit.

And it is a far more popular solution than reading distorted text, since it is easy to solve, has no accessibility issues and makes the site feel unique.

Several bots per day is being under control? It is only due to the sheer amount of vigilance that the forum hasn't been completely overrun already.

Indeed, we need a new registration form/captcha/whatever.

Why not make it so first posts of new members have to validated by moderators?

Might seem like a hassle, but it'll be less then the current situation.

*shrugs* The issue doesn't bother me but I think new members would really complain if they were denied the ability to post because of it, especially with the influx of new members we'll be sure to get with the new games on the go.

Uhm, the idea behind simple questions is to ask things that any member should rightfully know.

Here are some example questions (answers are too obvious to post):

  • What is Phoenix Wright's nickname?
  • Which word does Franziska von Karma likes to use?
  • Trucy is Phoenix's what?
  • Which rank does Gumeshoe have?
  • What does the judge slam?
  • What does an attorney say when they find a contradiction?
  • Which color is Edgeworth's car?
  • What stores evidence and profiles?
  • Which company makes the games?

The Turnabout Musical forums use this, but they're questions are even simpler such as "What does Phoenix shout?" and "What color is the sky?", and it's worked perfectly.

Simpler is probably better.

It would suck to be the new user who hasn't played Apollo Justice and wouldn't have any idea who Trucy is.

For the record: I've tried questions. It stalls the bots for only an hour. After that, they fire full steam.

I've tried various capatcha, they all seem equally incompetent, but if disabled, the spam problem is SIGNIFICANTLY worse.

Sign up is tested against a few third party anti-spam services. They, like capatcha, throttle the spam, but don't stop it.

I have no idea why spam bots like CR so much.

This guy

His only post is simple, his profile is suspicious but with no links.

The one post he made has a smily not from the CR library that links out to another page apparently.

I've not dared click it but it's especially deceptive, ban this fool?

Normally I'd hesitate, but the link contained "-seo-" or Search Engine Optimization. That's a safe bet it's a bot.
