The spam may be outrageous here at CR. But, while I'm still trying to think of a good way to prevent it from being posted in the first place, I've just upped the Anti for the spam that does get past.

If you've got a 'Image' above your posts, (As opposed to a set of Image's) then you've unlocked the ban hammer. This is intended as an anti spam measure. You guys are not moderators, so we don't (yet?) trust you guys with the full moderator tools, but I figure, if you have been around with us long enough to get a Image, then I figure you likely know the rules of the land.

You will have the ability to ban hammer, which means deleting posts, accounts, and IP blocking, all in a couple of clicks. However, you will only be able to do this to 'new' members, so no you can't go on a ban spree against people you just don't like.

I hope you guys will be mature enough not to use the ban hammer against non-bots. Because I'd hate to have to use the ban hammer on one of you guys in return. But I'm sure it won't come to that. Right? :shoe:

Right now there are 3 mods and myself that are clearing out the spambots, but we're not here non-stop. Hopefully with the added manpower we can beat the spammers back.

Let's cross our fingers and hope this runs smoothly. I'm just as sick as you guys are at seeing all this spam running rampant.

By the way, may be a dumb question, but have you guys considered maybe getting another mod who lives in a timezone where they can cover for you guys when you all aren't online?

Post subject:  Re: New Weapon in the War against Spam: Ban Hammer for non-M

It's been really hard for us to find mods. Croik and I mostly busy ourselves with the maintenance of the site so we don't actually spend a lot of time interacting with other members on the forums. That's a good thing in that it means we can get things done and make things nice for you guys, but a bummer in that we don't know many of you guys enough to have a very strong opinion and say "Yeah we want THAT guy to help us out".

But if you or others are volunteering, I'll take it under serious consideration.

Forgot to mention, if you want to ban a spammer, and if the person in question is qualified as 'new' then you can find the ban hammer next to the user name in the person's profile. But if it's someone who isn't new, the ban hammer will not show. In which case, you'll have to use the old report function and one of the normal staff members will have to take care of it.

It'll definitely clear the board of multi-topic and multi-post spammers a lot more quickly. But yeah... we all need to be careful with it.

And the award for "First Spambot ban hammered by a non-mod" goes to Adrian in Black! The party escort bot will soon be dispatched to bring you to the festivities. There will be cake.

...uhhh... yeah...

Well, I just hope he was really a bot. (Then again, rambling on and on about Kobe Bryant and sports for your very first post in a forum that has nothing to do with sports doesn't make one look much like a functioning human user.)

Cake is welcome. I am also partial to pie.

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH

...

I mean

What an interesting new weapon in order to combat the spambots. Hopefully it will be effective at curbing them down. ...And I definitely won't use it to get rid of people I don't like or stage a coup.

...Definitely.

Also, the ban-hammer doesn't appear on older skins =\ Darn it, Wooster, you finally got me to switch to the newer skins :yani-fist:

...Gah. Tempting.
(But I'm EST, so I doubt I'd fill that void of time when there aren't really mods on.)

Just in case.

That's understandable. In the past, I might have considered helping out if you guys had so needed it, but I'm busy with my own life nowadays that I'm not on here as much as I used to be. Funnily enough, dunno if it's just me, but you do seem to be a lot more active on the forums recently than I've seen you been in years.

I mean, I've said before, I'd like to help out in anyway I can because this forum is basically my online home.

I think this is one of the first forums I've seen that allows something like this to help in prevention of spam :)

Now I have an incentive to get that attorney badge (without going to a law school...I think!)~

Hope it helps in keeping the spam bots on the lower side!

There are two factors simultaneously at play for that.

  1. My life is no longer in that hideous downward spiral leading up to, causing, and immediately after CR's down time.
  2. Croik's been busy with life, so where Croik might've done something, I have to do step up and do it myself, or at least bang on Croik's door until the police carry me away for disturbing the police. But the past few days have been very active CR-like for us, so maybe things can start pepping up.

Such power? In my hands? I can assure you, you have made a wise decision.

(Fourteen were killed in the rush out the door...)

In all seriousness, hopefully this'll be effective in keeping spam down, especially in tandem with BP as our newest moderator. (Congrats, by the way - I'd volunteer as well, but my guess is if one new EST mod is already having overlap, one EST and one CST is redundant to the point of silliness.) Ideally, once things get moving again along with GS5 and PLvsAA, people'll be active enough that unchecked spambots won't really be a problem, but until then I think C-R's userbase is plenty mature enough to handle this.

Percei and Dullahan1, talked it over with Croik and we think we've got enough new mods for the time being.

But, I will say I keep a close watch on the moderator logs. If I frequently see you taking care of spammers with your unlocked ban hammer, that may be sufficient incentive to promote at a later time.

Go away for about a weekend and find this has happened?

Well I'll need to earn a couple notches on my banhammer then.
Sounds good, reported bots in the past but it's irritating when you are there to witness a bot spreading cause it just breaks out madly. Appreciate the trust in this decision.

Edit:

*Carves a notch in his banhammer* Rest in peace Dircreped or whatever your name was.

The ban hammer is only available on the profile of the offender, if they are considered 'new'. You should find it next to the avatar.

Oh, that's fine, I really don't care. Just as long as I can help, that's all that matters. I just want some cake.

Here's a screen shot from before the non-mod ban hammer...
Image

And here it is right now...
Image

Mind, these screenshots, particularly the before, are not indicative of how it normally is. Nose, Gerk, General Luigi, Croik, Lunaria42 and Dematador can all be caught helping out. But I have been doing the lions share of the ban hammering. But special thanks goes out to General Luigi, he's been quite diligent in helping me fight spam. ( Though There was at least one week where I had to fend off the spam bots on my own, so in the mod log it's not uncommon to see only my name on a few pages ;_;)

So I want to give a big heart felt thank-you to our Mods/Admins, both old and new, and our non-mods that've wielded the ban hammer in the battle against spam. You've done well. I no longer feel particularly antsy thinking, "It's been 4 hours, I bet there's a spam bot. Oh look, there it is BAN HAMMER. *wake up* Hmm, better check the CR spam *Ban hammer*"

Thank-you thank-you thank-you
