Spoiler: It’s Sunday, I swear.
Still ain’t got nothing to show here

Hmm… Maybe it was…

Aura left the Gloves in the Surgery Room!

Aura left the Gloves in the Surgery Room!

(No… While that would be the perfect place to dispose of the gloves, it would have been pretty out of the way. Aura most likely would have been seen going from the fifth floor to the surgery rooms, and someone certainly would have noticed if she arrived before the scheduled surgery. In which case, lying and claiming she hadn’t been there would look suspicious, but Aura never said she went to the surgery rooms early…

I suppose she could have disposed of it during the surgery, but I’m not sure the hospital scrubs have pockets she could have carried the gloves in. And even if they did, it would have been dangerous to throw away the gloves there, as anyone who saw it would at least be somewhat concerned that she had a pair of bloody gloves she hadn’t used before.

I’m sure it had to be somewhere she could get to more easily… In that case, it has to be…)

Uhh... heck. Guess I'm still a little lost as to the timeline of events.

Then... her office?

Coulda sworn she was unavailable for some time due to surgery....

Gotta have been her office then? Maybe she staged the ransacking to get rid of them

Yeah she was, but that was after the body was discovered. In retrospect though I probably shouldn’t have listed that as an answer choice, it was pretty last minute.

Spoiler: Aha, now you’ve got it!!

Of course… It had to be…

Aura Disposed of the Gloves in her Office!

(Indeed, that’s the earliest opportunity she would have had. After committing the murder, Aura went straight to her office, and found that the room had been ransacked by Sammy. It was at this point that she needed to dispose of the gloves…

But when I searched Aura’s office, I didn’t find any gloves… In that case, where did she put them?)

Outside the office.

All the other locations are too obvious and would have been spotted

There’s only one option left…

Aura Placed the Gloves Outside the Office!

(I will admit it sounds silly… but we checked everywhere else fairly thoroughly. A pair of plastic gloves would have stood out in her filing cabinet and on her desk, and she surely wouldn’t have placed them somewhere as obvious as the wastebasket. So, if there was no good place to hide the gloves in the office, then they must have ended up somewhere else…

But where? It had to be somewhere she could have easily reached from her office. I’d best think carefully… This is all I need now to seal the deal!)

We already searched the janitorial cart though, right? No gloves there.

Hanzo seems to have the right idea, I’m going with his suggestion.

But fiar enough I'll back Hanzo here.

Spoiler: I wonder how long this will be delayed.
What a lame way to go out, huh?

At last, the truth was clear…

Aura Tossed the Gloves into the Storm Drain!

(Yes, that’s the only possibility. In fact, I might even have evidence to back it up…)

Vesti finally opens his eyes. He looks out at the people staring expectantly at him and steps away from the wall he had been leaning on, raising a finger as he begins to speak.

“The answer to this dilemma…” Vesti explains, “Is actually quite simple. After all, it was easy enough for Aura to get a pair of gloves. There were plenty of them sitting right there in the storage closet, right on Aura’s path to the crime scene!” “I believe that the question…” Percy interjects, “Was how Aura got rid of the gloves, not how she obtained them.” “Well, that’s true,” Vesti says, “But to answer that question, it’s important to establish one thing: the bloody gloves were a disposable latex pair.” “So you’re saying that Aura just threw them in the trash?” Lita asks. “No, not precisely.” Vesti says, “If she had put them in such an obvious spot, we would have found them. But she did dispose of them in her office…” “Well, there’s little use in waiting any longer,” Aura said, “Just get on with it. Where did I put them?” “While you did dispose of them in your office, they’re not in the office anymore!” Vesti points at Aura and shouts, “The truth is, you took those gloves and threw them straight out the window!”

“Wh-What?!” Argenta replies, “The window?! Wouldn’t someone have seen them?” “Normally, yes,” Vesti says, “But as it turns out, there’s a gutter right outside that window. This is the same gutter Aura climbed down five years ago. And at the bottom of this gutter was a drainage ditch. So when Aura threw the gloves out the window, that was what she was aiming for!” “The storm drain, huh?” Lauren mumbles, “We certainly would have been unlikely to check that…” “B-But that’s just conjecture!” Argenta shouts. “Not exactly,” Vesti says, “You see, when Lita and I were investigating your office earlier, we happened to notice something a little strange…”

Spoiler: Flashback
“Now, if the investigation from five years ago is to be believed,” Vesti says, looking out the window contemplatively. “Cammy jumped out of this very window…” “But if we choose not to believe it, then this is the window Cammy was violently THROWN from!” Lita says, coming to join Vesti. Vesti replies, “Well…That’s probably not quite how it went…” Lita appears beside Vesti and leans far out the window. She shouts, “UGH, how heinous! Throwing her out the window wasn’t enough. They had to throw her out into all that mud and trash!” “Trash?” Vesti mumbles. He leans in to take a closer look and notices that there are several pieces of plastic, like some bags and a pair of gloves, caught in the drain, with a few styrofoam cups scattered around as well. “Yeah, just look at that mess!” Lita shouts, “I swear, it makes my blood boil to see people treat the whole world as their garbage can! I wanna track down those people, throw THEM on the ground, and see how they like it!” “Uhh…Yeah, that’s great, Lita.” Vesti says, “But if you don’t mind, I’m gonna get back to the actual case.”

“It seems that the gloves got caught in the drain cover rather than actually slipping all the way through,” Vesti explains, “Aura had probably washed the gloves, so we didn’t think much of them before. But the truth is, that small pair of disposable gloves we saw was actually a piece of key evidence!” “Wow, seriously?” Lita says, “Good thing I noticed that, then! And that means that not only did you and I catch a murderer, we also caught a nefarious litterbug!” “N-No, you didn’t catch either of those!” Argenta shouts, “You don’t even have any proof!” “It shouldn’t be difficult to find proof though…” Percy remarks, “We just need to send a few people to check the storm drain and then test the gloves for blood. Perhaps you can take care of that, Mr. Gates?” “Of course,” Vesti says, “I’ll send some people to--”

Everyone looks at Aura as she raises her hand and lets out a slow sigh, clutching her clipboard close to her chest. “…Don’t bother. I can’t take this anymore…” “A-Aura…?” Argenta slowly asks, “Wh-What do you mean?” Everyone looks expectantly at Aura as she looks at the floor, her eyes tightly shut. She lets out a shaky breath and tears a sheet from her clipboard. Then she crumples it into a ball and then lightly dabs at her eyes with it. When she opens them again, tears are still visible at the corners. “I-It’s not worth it. You were right…” She mumbles, “I…I confess.”

“You…confess?” Percy says, “To what, specifically?” Aura sighs and looks away. “Do I really need to specify?” She asks, “I did it…I did all of it. I killed Cammy Tose.” Quiet mumbling persists for a few moments before Argenta shouts, “Wh-What? No, don’t say that Aura! I-I did it!” “A-Argenta, please…” Aura says, stopping to dab at her eyes. “Don’t do this…I did it for your sake. I did it to save your reputation. If you just went to jail, the whole thing would be pointless. H-How could you expect me to live with myself?” “So…I was right, then?” Vesti asks, “You killed Cammy to keep her from revealing that the suicide attempt was fake…and to prevent the blackout from being reinvestigated.” “E-Exactly,” Aura explains, “All I wanted to do was let my sister live her dream. If she had lost her job…directing this hospital just wouldn’t be the same.” “O-Oh, Aura…” Argenta mumbles, tears coming to her eyes. “You d-didn’t have to do that. It was all my fault. I-I’m sorry…” “Argenta, don’t say that…” Aura adds, “That was just a tragic accident…N-None of this was your fault.”

“…Damn right it wasn’t,” Everyone turns to Sammy as he walks over to Aura, straining at his handcuffs. “This whole thing was on you. Your decision that your sister’s peace of mind was more important than my wife!” “Watch yourself, Mr. Tose,” Vesti says, “I don’t want to add an assault charge to your trespassing one.” “Well, can you really blame me! Hell, I’m not the only one she screwed over!” Sammy turns to Dustin and gestures to him. “She tried to get you arrested for it. What, are janitors just considered replaceable?” Aura sighs and slowly replies, “I’m not proud of what I did…and as I was only acting in the moment, I truly do regret some of it… However, please, do not blame my sister for it. She never did anything wrong. She just wanted to help people…If it means anything to you, I’m sure I’ll serve time for what I’ve done.” Sammy scoffs and adds, “I don’t know how you expect that to make a difference…It doesn’t make a difference, anyway. The truth about that blackout still came out.” “True,” Lauren says, “But I don’t think any of us intend to bring it public. I think it’d be best for everyone if those details were kept relatively quiet…” “Alright, fine,” Sammy says, “Not that that makes it much better. I guess I can only hope I’ll be called to testify at the trial, and then I can make my opinions quite clear.” “Leave her alone,” Argenta shouts, “Look, Mr. Tose, I know you’re grieving…but please don’t take it out on others…I-I think we all lost something today…” Sammy stares at Argenta for a few moments and looks as if he’s about to respond, but eventually he just sighs and shakes his head. He finally walks away from Aura and returns to where he was standing.

“This has gone on for far too long.” Percy says, “Will someone please just make an arrest?” “You’re right,” Lauren mumbles, “It’s about time we closed this case.” She reaches for her handcuffs and begins to approach Argenta, but she never gets the chance to cuff her. Vesti was already snapping the handcuffs around Aura’s wrists and locking them, his eyes tense and purposeful. “Aura Gold, you are under arrest for the murder of Cammy Tose. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be held against you in a court of law. …Let’s go.” Lauren, Percy, and the others look at Vesti in surprise as he slowly escorts Aura out of the stairwell. However, he doesn’t make it far before Argenta speaks up. “N-No, please! Wh-What kind of justice is this?!”

Vesti stops in his tracks. Silence fills the room. Eventually, he slowly looks behind him, staring at Argenta with solemn eyes. “Argenta…I’m afraid that this is justice. Our laws are the foundation of our society. I can’t just choose where they apply or how they should be interpreted. If I did that, there’d be complete anarchy. So, no matter how painful it may be…I must carry out the law.” “B-But…” Argenta mumbles, “I don’t want to be alone!” “That’s a real shame,” Sammy snaps, “But thanks to your sister, I’m alone. It seems fair to me.” Vesti gives Sammy an annoyed glance and continues, “Aura knew the risks of the law. She knew the consequences. There’s nothing I can do.”

“Argenta…” Aura says, turning to her sister. “Please. I know you’re upset, but you can’t let it consume you…You can’t let it bring you down.” Argenta presses her hands against her forehead and responds, “H-How? How am I supposed to do that?!” “After our father passed away,” Aura says, “…You were always the one who cheered me up. You kept me going in the darkest hours…Even after everything, you still carried that positive outlook with you everywhere…You still had that joy for life that I feel like I sometimes lacked…” Argenta stares at her sister, tears forming at the edge of her eyes. “B-But Aura, I--” “Argenta, there are a lot of suffering people in this world,” Aura interjects, “They need a doctor committed to helping them. A doctor committed to letting them see life in the same optimistic, hopeful way she does…They need someone to provide energy to light up their darkest hours…They need you.” “A-Aura…” Argenta trails off, looking at the floor with a conflicted expression on her face. Eventually, she reaches up with a gloved hand and tries to wipe the tears from her eyes. She finally looks back to Argenta, and a smile appears on her face. “A-Alright…I understand, Aura. You’re right…It’s not enough to make up for my own mistakes is it…I need to make up for yours too.” Aura smiles back at her sister and lets out a relieved sigh. “Yes, I’d like that…Well, I suppose I’ll be going now, Argenta…I just want you to alway remember…that I love you.” Argenta slowly nods at Aura. “I…I love you too.”

Before Vesti even has a chance to make a move, Aura begins to walk away from the stairwell. He quickly follows, escorting Aura toward the front of the building. He looks behind him one last time, seeing Lauren, Lita, and Percy making their exit as well. Percy closes the door behind him.

Date: Tuesday, January 5th, 2016. Time: 6:30 PM. Location: Gold Clinic, Parking Lot.

The police cruiser backes out of the parking space, turning until it’s parallel to the sidewalk where Vesti is standing. He stands with his hands in his pockets, staring at Lauren, who sits in the front seat with her hands on the steering wheel. She waves Vesti goodbye and then gently nudges the accelerator, driving off down the parking lot. For a moment, Vesti can see Aura in the backseat, staring up at the Gold Clinic contemplatively. As the car pulls away and merges onto the road, Vesti follows her gaze to see where she had been looking. He finds himself staring at the hospital sign, behind which sits the hospital room Cammy had been resting in. It had only been a few hours ago that she was killed there, but to Vesti, it feels like a very long time.

Vesti stands staring at the sign for a while, until he hears a voice behind him. “Ah, hello Mr. Gates. I’m surprised you’re still here.” Vesti turns around and sees Percy walking over to him. Or, more accurately, walking in his general direction, as he’s still paying more attention to his video game than the world around him. “Oh, hello Percy.” Vesti says, “Is there something you’d like to say?” “Yes, in fact,” Percy replies, stopping near Vesti. “Working with you has been an experience I will most likely never forget…unfortunately.” “Wow, I didn’t know I meant that much to you,” Vesti remarks. “Look, I know what you’re thinking.” Percy says, “You’re just itching to point out that you were right every step of the way and that all of my accusations were completely faulty, aren’t you?” “Well, you got me,” Vesti says, “I hope you take this as a learning experience. You spent this entire investigation assuming that the culprit was some criminal mastermind who planned everything to the last detail…but ultimately, the person who did it just acted in the moment for the sake of their sister.” “Yes, indeed.” Percy says, “You’re exactly right.”“Wh-What?” Vesti mumbles, surprised. “This was a very strange case,” Percy continues, “And it seems that my methods of solving it were not up to par…Perhaps in the future, I should be more careful before I make accusations…Perhaps I should consider things from multiple perspectives more often…However…” Percy looks up from his game and points at Vesti. “This case was most assuredly an exception. While I will strive to be careful in the future, the vast majority of criminals are cunning and malicious, and they’ll stop at nothing to accomplish their goals. I have to do what I can to make sure they never get away.” “Percy,” Vesti says, “If I may ask…why are you so passionate about this?” Percy falls silent for a moment and then slams his 3DS shut. “I’m sure you must know what happens when a case is left unsolved…Surely you’ve seen all the people left without closure…unable to move on, unable to find direction in their lives…I can’t allow that to happen to anyone.” Percy walks straight past Vesti before he can respond, shoving his 3DS into his pocket. He stops beside a car parked near the entrance and then turns back to Vesti. “The point is…arguing with you on this case was an eye-opening experience, and I must thank you for your perseverance in tracking down the culprit. But quite frankly…I hope we never work on a case together again.” Percy climbs into the car without another word and drives away. Vesti is pleased to see that he focuses quite sharply on the road while doing so, rather than his 3DS.

Vesti stands in front of the hospital for a little while longer and then continues on to his own car. Unlocking it, he climbs in on the driver’s side. But just before he can crank it, he notices someone in the passenger seat. He cries out in surprise upon recognizing them. “L-Lita? What are you doing in here? H-How’d you even get here?!” Lita, who had been staring at her phone, turns to Vesti and smiles. “Oh, come on, Vesti. I thought you knew I took your spare key.” “Wh-What?” Vesti stammers, “Of course I didn’t!” “Oh, well…you know now!” Lita shouts, looking back to her phone. “Point is, I didn’t really feel like going for a drive earlier, so I just took a cab here. But I figured it’d be easier if I just carpooled back! You can drop me off, right?” “Oh…yeah, sure.” Vesti says, shaking his head. “Let’s go.” Vesti cranks the car, pulls out of the parking space, and heads out to the road.

Trees and buildings pass by the window as a companionable silence envelops the car. Vesti weaves through lanes and across intersections, heading downtown. Eventually, he’s stopped at a red light. He calmly drums his fingers on the wheel as he waits for the light to change.

Eventually, Lita speaks. “Vesti…what’s wrong?” “Huh?” Vesti replies, “What do you mean?” “Well, you’ve been silent this whole time,” Lita says, looking up from her phone. “You just solved a case. Why are you acting so glum?” Vesti sighs and mumbles, “I can’t keep anything hidden from you, can I?” “Of course not,” Lita says, chuckling quietly. “What do you think sisters are for?” Vesti falls silent for a few seconds, just in time for the traffic light to change. He accelerates across the intersection, staring out at the road. Eventually, he continues, “I…just can’t help but wonder if I did the right thing…” “Really?” Lita asks, “You seemed pretty certain about it before…” Vesti falls silent once again. He slowly lets out a sigh.

“Look, Vesti, as a detective, you know that your job is to ensure that justice is handed down on those who deserve it.” Lita says, “But I can tell it must have hurt to have to take Aura away right in front of Argenta, huh?” “Well…yeah,” Vesti says, “I mean, what did she do? She didn’t commit any crimes today, but she’s still practically getting punished…” “That’s just how it has to be,” Lita continues, “There’s always gonna be people left behind. And all you can do about it is try to prevent that from happening. You know, get to the tragedies before they happen and put away the criminals before they can strike again. And you’ve always been very good at that, Vesti.” “I…I just wish there was more I could do…” Vesti says, sighing. “Look, Vesti…I know how you really felt.” Lita replies, “But I think Argenta will be fine. She cares enough about her sister that she won’t let her advice go forgotten. There’s little you can do to help her except let her try to move on…Besides, you finally brought closure to Sammy. That’s good, right?” Vesti smiles and mumbles, “Yeah, I suppose so…” “She’s be okay, Vesti” Lita continues, “And the way I see it, life is always more than willing to take strange twists and turns. I don’t think it’s necessarily over yet…You never know what could happen.”

“Now,” Lita adds, “If you’re thinking of preventing tragedies, there’s a good chance to do that coming right up.” “H-Huh?” Vesti says, glancing toward Lita in surprise. “What are you talking about?” “C’mon, you shouldn’t need me to tell you,” Lita continues, “It’s only a little over a month away.” Vesti’s eyes flash with recognition. “Oh…you mean…the day the ghost comes back.” “Exactly,” Lita says, smiling. “And I have a feeling that this is our shot. We’ll gonna catch him this time, Vesti. You and me together!” “Yeah…” Vesti chuckles, with a little more optimism. “Yeah, we will. I’ll make sure of it.”

The sun begins to set behind the buildings just ahead of them. It’s a grey, dreary afternoon, but the lights in the metropolis are bright. The road lies before Vesti, and he keeps driving. Dark clouds are broiling in the distance…but he keeps driving.

Turnabout Flatline: END

{{Cool, that’s finally over. The wait for the next case might be a lot longer than the others though. Hopefully shorter than the random, goofy hiatus in the middle of this one, but we’ll have to see.}}

WHOOOOO IT’S FINALLY OVER

Don’t have much to say but that was a pretty cool case overall. Got pretty long winded at some points but I still enjoyed it. The ending was interestingly somber too. Little weird we had another real world case too considering this is supposed to be an Interdimensional Investigations but whatever. Good stuff.

Man good thing we arrested Aura before Lauren accidentally arrested Argenta.

THAT would have been embarrassing!

Next actions:

Continue to visit Argenta to cheer her up/try and secure that coffee!

Alternatively

While driving bust out my detectives badge and present it to Lita in about the last place she'd expect! It'll almost certainly kill us taking our hands off the wheel but there's no way she'd see it coming!

Here's hoping we find Dustin working wherever we go next, even if it's another dimension.

Meanwhile, put some sick pumping beats on the radio and turn it up! Gotta drive away in style.

Okay, I’m still not really ready to start this case, but I think I likely never will be unless I start writing. Point is, expect some schedule slippage and infrequent hiatuses early on. I might also miss next week cause my family’s hosting a Danish exchange student.

Spoiler: Case 4: Turnabout Calamity - Case File
Evidence:
Dyed Police Badge
My police badge. Sayge expertly dyed it to match the pattern of my sweater vest. Now it just looks stupid.

Newspaper
The paper from this morning. The headline reads, “Graham Manor Ball on the Horizon; Supernatural Threat Looms.” Couldn’t I have been stuck with a paper about a more wholesome topic?

Yiga Clan Info
A nefarious group of brigands intent on defeating the legendary hero. Their weapon of choice is the Viscous Sickle, and they enjoy Mighty Bananas. Legend tells that they each possess a brand on their body.

Reede’s Body Notes
Reede’s body was pinned to one of the windmill blades with the sickle in his chest. Another slash wound was found on his stomach, and his body is covered in minor lacerations - signs of a struggle. It’s impossible to be sure what killed him without an autopsy.

Vicious Sickle
A specially-carved steel sickle with a hilt wrapped in red-ribbon. It was used to pin Reede’s body to the windmill. According to Seldon, only a real Yiga footsoldier could have supplied it.

Windmill Bloodstains
There are numerous bloodstains near the stairs in the windmill, indicating that a chaotic fight took place there. However, there seem to be more than would be expected from Reede’s murder, and they lack an obvious source.

Windmill Map (First Floor)
The X marks the spot where Beedle supposedly woke up.
https://i.imgur.com/DxWgM7Z.jpg

Handsaw
A handsaw found lying on the floor of the windmill. The blade is covered in blood.

Windmill Gears
One of the gear spokes has been sawed off. The weight of Reede’s body had caused the windmill to spin slower. Spins in a clockwise direction.

Windmill Loft Door
Was locked with a key usually carried by Reede. The key has yet to be found.

Beedle’s Beetle Guide
One of the pages was marked. It details the recipe for medicine made of butterflies and a frog. Beedle claims he had a client in town looking for that medicine. Additionally, the guide contains many other colorful concoctions. Some are monster poisons that can knock out or kill other creatures.

Prima’s Search
After informing the townsfolk of Reede’s death, Prima searched Beedle’s clothes and backpack. She found little else but the stab wound in his shoulder.

Beedle’s Backpack
Stuffed full of items, including insects and arrows. It’s large and very heavy, with one horn jutting from the top. Some of the pouches on the side are empty.

Dye Store Posters
Feature dye recipes and a cross-section of the dye vats. The Good-Day-to-Dye Machine features a storage container in the grip, sensors that identify the composition of liquids, and a cupholder.

Storybook & Picture
A children’s book depicting an old Hylian legend, in which a great beast was defeated. Scrawled inside with charcoal is a strange picture of two figures.
https://i.imgur.com/5rbBymX.png

Wooden Toy
A wooden toy, partially burned by the fire. It’s a short, hollow tube with one small end. There used to be several like it, of various sizes. Karin found them at some point, but seems unwilling to explain where.

Spirit Windows
Reede placed banners over the windows of his home recently. Because of their size, you can’t see much outside except for some grass. They’re supposed to ward off spirits, so it seems Reede may have been worried about his family’s health.

Strange Medicine
A red liquid medicine meant to ward off the symptoms of Karin’s condition. Her dad procured some every month. Three bottles remain.

Construction Crew Testimony
Bolson and his crew saw a mysterious figure (who they believed was Beedle) enter the vacant house on the hill. However, Prima saw Beedle enter the inn at the same time, so it was most likely someone else.

Also here’s some neat behind the scenes info on other potential Case 4’s. If you don’t want to get spoiled on what this case isn’t about, then just skip it for now and come back later.
Spoiler: Behind the Scenes
For whatever reason, it took me a very long time to come up with a Case 4 I was satisfied with. In fact, I had come up with the general plot for Case 5 long before I knew a single thing about Case 4. For that reason, I went through a lot of ideas that I ended up abandoning. I'm gonna share most of them here for posterity, and because a few of them were kinda interesting.

If I recall correctly, the first idea I had (and one that I was CERTAIN I would use for a while) was an Undertale case. I forgot most of the details, but I think Alphys died over weird True Lab-related stuff and Sans was the detective and the killer for some reason. Toriel was also supposed to be the prosecutor, purely because I found that funny. Anyway, I eventually abandoned the idea because I thought it could cheapen Undertale's message, and because Undertale still wasn't really as recognizable as Mario Bros back then. It's a good thing I did too, cause nowadays I've lost interest in the game and it's mostly just become a meme.

I also kept coming back to a possible Pokémon case. First was an idea with the working title Turnabout Champions, which would have taken place in Kalos (that was the most recent game at the time). All I remember is that Diantha died at the Pokémon League and the player character was the defendant (they were just as silent as in the games, too). I think Professor Sycamore was the killer...for some reason.

The other Pokémon case came along a lot later, and would have been set in Alola. I only ever really had vague ideas for this one though. Something about Guzma's body washing up on a beach which sparks a lot of gang violence and Vesti's sent into Po Town with Nanu to figure everything out. I think there was a hostage situation involved too, and there wasn't going to be a trial. Near the end this idea was basically in a race with the one you see today to see which would get developed first, but ultimately this one didn't develop fast enough or offer as much stuff that I thought would be interesting.

That's actually it for Case 4 ideas that I remember. If there was anything else it didn't get farther than a vague, undeveloped idea. There are a few more things I'd like to mention though.

I think at some point I had some idea for a Splatoon case where an ink bomb exploded in Crusty Sean's store and he died, which may have had something to do with a business deal gone wrong. This was a long time ago though, so that's all I remember. I think I actually had this idea before the CYOA began, and it may have been what led to its creation. It was actually my interest in crossover cases that led me to start it, and originally they would have been a bigger deal. I think before The Crooked Turnabout I was planning on having the viewers decide which series to do a crossover with, and this would go on forever until I ended the CYOA. Obviously this was a terrible idea, so almost as soon as the first update went up I instead decided to have four pre-planned crossover cases after The Crooked Turnabout, to form a five-case "game." That clearly didn't happen, and Case 3 and 5 became entirely original and the main focus of the CYOA.

There's one more thing I'd like to mention: the original Case 5, back when it was gonna be a crossover case. The grand finale would have been a Fire Emblem Fates case. Basically, there would have been one murder in Hoshido and another in Nohr, and Vesti and Lauren would each wake up in one of the kingdoms, and war between the nations hinged on their ability to find the truth (if I ever had any idea who the killer would have been, I've forgotten it by now). Each update would be split into two parts, told from one of their perspectives. In retrospect, this wouldn't have worked well, as I would have effectively been writing two updates at once. And after I decided to shuffle in two original cases, including an original finale, the idea was basically shelved forever.

Oh also one last thing. I tried to do a crossover case with F5 by signing up Vesti Gates as my character and then stringing together everyone else's lines as my updates and then having people in the CYOA decide what Vesti did, but Panda found the first Vesti case and threatened to post it if I didn't change my character so it didn't happen.

Also, in the name of progress, I think I’ll try formatting this case more like a normal narrative, mainly by splitting lines by paragraphs instead of jamming everything together in big blocks of text. The main reason I didn’t do this before was for ease in scrolling, though I’m not sure if that will really be an issue. If you have opinions keep me informed, as I may yet return to the old way of doing it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All the lights were off at the Prosecutor’s Office. Any passers-by would spot the occasional flicker through a window, but it would hardly concern them. Most would assume it was just a security guard on the night shift.

However, one such guard was currently busy with other matters. He had spotted suspicious movement in one of the offices. Adhering strictly to procedure, he brought some backup and approached the door, brandishing his gun.

Suddenly, a bright flash ignited the office window, sending beams of light down the hallway. Fearing the worst, the group hurried to the door and threw it open, charging in with their guns raised. However, to their surprise, the office was empty. By their estimate, it had been hastily abandoned, though surely no one could have survived a jump from the window.

But the signs were certainly there. Namely the case files strewn across the desk, recently opened and examined, and the trash and bags of chips thrown wildly about the room with no concern for striking the trash bin. But perhaps most strange was the small television in the middle of the room emitting its faint glow. A gaming console was plugged in and the game now sat abandoned, the on-screen avatar doomed to stand motionless in his bright grassy field, beneath the grand blue sky.

“Hey, Vesti…Yeah, this is sis. Figured you wouldn’t pick up the phone at this hour. You’ve never been much of a morning person, huh?

Well, anyway…I wasn’t calling to complain about your sleep schedule. Remember that prosecutor we met on that case a few months ago? I’m sure you’d at least recall how difficult to work with he was, always rushin’ to get someone behind bars.

Point is, the prosecutor’s office has been getting complaints about him lately. Don’t ask how I know this; you know I wouldn’t tell you. But apparently he’s been getting…a lot worse. Like, even more pushy and rude…and taking actions bordering on illegality. I mean investigating illegally, not anything like forgery thankfully…

But anyway, I know you don’t really know him, but I think you left some kind of an impression on him. Maybe if you see him again you could try to talk some sense into him? I don’t know, it’s just that the guy’s a good prosecutor, and I don’t want to watch him to dig himself a grave.

So, uh, that’s all. Call me back whenever you get the chance. Bye.”

Case 4: Turnabout Calamity

Date: Tuesday, March 3, 2016. Time: 6:45 A.M. Location: Vesti’s Apartment.

Beep, beep, beep--

Vesti Gates briefly stirred in his warm bed, reaching in the vague direction of the shrill tones emitted by his alarm clock. After fumbling around blindly for a few moments, he slammed his hand on the snooze button with a dull thump, swiftly quieting the alarm.

Date: Tuesday, March 3, 2016. Time: 6:50 A.M. Location: Vesti’s Apartment.

Beep, beep, beep--

Finally triumphing over his exhaustion with an unwilling sigh, Vesti sat up and turned off the alarm clock. After getting dressed, he opened his closet and looked over his collection of sweater vests. He picked out one of his favorites and swiftly donned it, then headed to the bathroom and stared into the mirror. As expected, his hair was a complete mess. It would likely take a lot of combing and gel to return it to its usual state of organized chaos, but Vesti simply shrugged and left the room. Surely he’d have time for that later.

Vesti continued into the main room of his apartment. Opening one of the cupboards, he quickly whipped together a humble breakfast of a bowl of cereal. He then opened the front door and methodically grabbed the newspaper sitting in front, glancing at the title as he headed for the room’s pathetically small dining table.

Vesti’s brow furrowed as he reads the headline: “Graham Manor Ball on the Horizon; Supernatural Threat Looms.” It was a grim reminder - one Vesti didn’t need this early in the morning. Though there was never a time when he enjoyed reading the paper’s sensationalized report on his department’s greatest shame. He flipped to the other stories with no regrets. Interestingly, it seemed there was a report on the Gold Clinic’s reopening further inside.

“Oh, come on,” a young man’s voice, disturbingly close, said. “Can’t you recognize foreshadowing when you see it?”

Vesti shouted in surprise, dropping the paper into his lap with a loud crumpling noise. He reached for his holster - which was unfortunately not on his hip yet - until he saw the face of the man now sitting across from him. “You!”

The man, most recognizable by the ring of hair circling his head, sat floating slightly above his chair, gingerly sipping from a cup of tea. “Yes, precisely. Surely you would have expected my return…I have been in the Profiles section for quite a while now.”

“Look, just cut the weird riddles and tell me why you’re here!” Vesti shouted.

“Oh, be honest,” Chronos Krate scoffed with a slight smile. “Both of us know exactly why I’m here.”

“Y-You’re gonna send me on another one of your interdimensional investigations aren’t you? Well, I’m not going!” Vesti slammed his spoon into his cereal and crossed his arms indignantly. “Lauren and I are needed at the precinct! Let this other dimension deal with its own problems.”

Chronos sighed. “While I’d love to keep politely discussing this matter with you…” He pulled out a white pocketwatch and glanced at it. “I’m afraid we can only squeeze a few more minutes from this scene. Still, I should briefly mention that you’re making quite the incorrect assumption.”

Vesti attempted to quietly push his chair back from the table in preparation for a valiant but pointless escape attempt. “…And what would that be?”

“You see, this little trip is about far more than just catching a killer,” Chronos said, placing his teacup onto its platter with a clink. “Oh, and as clichéd as it sounds…you don’t exactly get to choose.”

Recognizing the tone in Chronos’s voice, Vesti rushed to his feet, but the other man had already pulled out one of his many gleaming white devices. He aimed it at Vesti and pressed a button, enveloping Vesti’s vision in orange light.

Date: ??? Time: ??? Location: ???

Whatever Chronos had used, it seemed to be more powerful than last time. Vesti couldn’t even enjoy the unforgettable feeling of hurtling wildly through space-time. Instead, he found himself waking up from a slumber once again. The feeling of cool grass underneath him was the only thing telling Vesti it hadn’t been all a dream.

“…Ah!” Vesti heard a new voice shout, “You’re awake!”

Vesti blinked, trying to focus in spite of the sun beating down from the midday sky. Seeing a gloved, strong looking hand reaching for him, he quickly took it. The hand then roughly pulled him up before Vesti had any chance to prepare. Vesti cried out as he stumbled to his feet, finding himself face-to-face with a tall, stockily-built man. Despite having human characteristics, something about him gave Vesti the impression that he was certainly no denizen of his own world.

“Oh, what a relief!” the man continued, with a voluminous voice befitting his stature. “I happened to spot you lying out in this field, unconscious! I worried that you may have fallen victim to the monsters, but, well…it looks like you’re alright. You are okay, right?!”

Vesti stared back at the man and replied, “Uhh…yeah, I think so.”

The first thing to catch Vesti’s eye about the man, aside from his size, was his hair. He had a rather wide face, with a chin covered completely in a neat beard. A small mustache sat above his lip, and a few tufts of hair poked from his otherwise bald head. He wore a pair of large brown overalls over a beige shirt, and a green scarf was tied around his neck.

The stranger smiled broadly at Vesti’s apparent health. “Excellent! Well, I suppose I may as well introduce myself.” He held out his hand. “The name’s Seldon. I’m a shopkeeper, tour guide, tailor…A bit of an everyman, I suppose.”

“Ah, I see,” Vesti replied. Though still somewhat taken aback, Vesti quickly clasped his hand and shook it firmly. “It’s nice to meet you, Seldon.”

Seldon pulled his hand away, and a short silence followed. Once it started getting awkward, Seldon added, “So, err…what might your name be? I don’t recall seein’ you around before.”

Vesti froze. He glanced behind Seldon in the direction of a dirt path winding up the hill and saw a small village spreading out before him. A welcoming archway served as the entrance, and pleasant farmland flanked it on both sides. The smoke rising from the houses indicated that there was no electrical outlet in sight, and Seldon’s mannerisms certainly weren’t fitting for an urbanite. It was immediately apparent to Vesti that wherever he’d wound up was nothing like the metropolis he called home.

“Uhh, well…hmm…” Vesti scratched his neck and looked aside. He might have to tread lightly here. Chronos was no longer in sight, so the truth may be quite difficult for Seldon to buy. But a lie was hardly simple either.

Who are you??
Pick a response:

1. Vesti Gates, some dude from, uhh…another place.

2. Vesti Gates, king of the so-called “monsters.”

3. Vesti Gates, a detective from a distant dimension.

Spoiler: A Simply Splendid Start
I walk the lonely road

Vesti stares blankly at Seldon’s smiling visage, patiently awaiting his reply. The question appears to be too much for the detective, who finds himself unable to decide if he should tell the truth or engage in a lie. Not to mention, in the case of the latter, there was the matter of how deceitful his lie should be. With no conclusion in sight, the first idea to Vesti’s mind simply spilled out of his mouth.

“I, uhh…” Vesti stammered, “My name is Vesti Gates…a-and I’m king of the monsters!”

A dark look crossed Seldon’s face. “What did you say?” He clenched his fists by his waist, perhaps preparing to use them. He coldly awaited Vesti’s response.

Unfortunately for Vesti, it was too late to change his mind now. His only option was to attempt to diffuse the situation as painlessly as possible.

“Oh, uh…I said I’m king of the ‘Monsters,’” Vesti slowly replied, “That’s the name of my old, err…wrestling team!”

“Really?” Seldon said, crossing his burly arms. “I’ve done a little wrestlin’ myself in the past! I don’t mean ta’ be rude, but I hafta be honest…You don’t look like much of a wrestler.”

“You think so?” Vesti asked, “Well, perhaps I should prove it to you…with a, uh…manliness contest!”

“Oh yeah?” Seldon laughs, “Well, I never refuse a manliness contest!”

“I…Is that so?” Vesti asked. “Wait, uhh…”

Seldon tears off his green scarf and throws it on the ground. “Let’s do this!”

Vesti panics a little at the rapid of escalation of events. “Actually, maybe we should rethink this?” He shouts, “You know, I’m not a fan of the violent portrayal of masculinity that’s so common. Maybe we should talk about our differences instead?!”

Seldon, already caught up in the spirit of the competition, ignores Vesti. He instead charges toward him like a bull, feet pumping across the field. Vesti, desperately hoping to save himself, pulls out his police badge and shows it to Seldon.

“Oh, by the way, have you seen my ba-”

Vesti lets out a grunt as Seldon tackles him.

Date: ??? Time: One Embarrassing Fight Later. Location: Village, Main Road.

“Whew, that was great! You almost had me there!” Seldon exclaimed as he strolled through the archway leading into the village.

Vesti chuckled, a little disinterestedly. He was still trying to massage the horrible pain in his chest and fretting over a rather sizeable tear in his sweater vest.

“Trying to hide behind that little medallion thing was certainly a unique strategy,” Seldon continued, “It threw me off for a moment. But it looks like I was able to turn it around, huh?”

Seldon gave Vesti a good natured smack on the back, which fortunately served to knock his spine right back into place. Vesti stumbled up the dirt road, letting out a cry of pain. Though after a few moments, relief set in. Vesti straightened his back, staring at the village extending in front of him.

He was standing in a grassy thoroughfare, with an overgrown dirt path in the center surrounded on all sides by quaint houses of yellow brick walls and red-thatched roofs. Windows and doors were carved into them a little roughly, and the fences were erected in knotted wood. About two or three people with accentuated facial features walked about, staring at Vesti as they passed but not looking particularly concerned. They quickly disappeared into nearby buildings, while two women by a small stand gossipped loudly. More pleasant conversation could be heard in the distance, but all in all it seemed like a sleepy town.

“Welcome to Hateno Village!” Seldon shouted, strolling over to stand next to Vesti. “It’s usually a little busier than this, but it’s pretty late in the day now. Around 7, I’d say. So folks are just now tucking in for the night.”

“Th-That’s probably a good thing,” Vesti said, wheezing like a deflated balloon. “I think you might have crushed one of my lungs…”

Seldon laughed. “Exactly!” he cried, obviously having no clue what Vesti was talking about. “I’m sure the others would be quite pleased to meet you. But until then, feel free to ask me some questions about the place. I’d be more than willing to show you around. That’s my job, after all!”

(Hateno Village, huh? Never heard of it…but obviously there has to be some reason I was dragged all the way here. I should probably focus on getting some info from this guy…)

You know, we've spent so long just having fun here. Asking people what their favourite colour is and other similar tripe. But we're nearing the end, and we need to get serious from now on! Hereafter, we're only asking the important questions to everyone!

...Ask Seldon about his least favourite colour. And Hateno Village, I guess.

Declare a rematch by going "What's that place?" Pointing to the dye shop and then jumping on Seldon's back to begin round two.

Or Ask Seldon if he's seen someone matching the description of Chronos Kale

Hah, now I can post on both forums at the same time! I told you I would do it, and did you listen?

... I dunno, maybe.

Anyways, go show those Gossiping Ladies your badge. Not for a goof or anything, just to show them that you're the real deal before you ask for some juicy rumors about Hateno Village.

(Don't worry, I'm suggesting exactly the same action on both forums)

Sorry for missing last week, guys. I was up at my brother’s college doing stuff with him. I was hoping I’d at least be able to write an update on my phone somehow, but it just didn’t really work out. I do intend to get back into the usual weekly schedule soon, assuming the world itself is willing to let me (Fun Fact: the power is out right now. Luckily we have a backup generator).

Also oops I forgot about the least favorite color thing don't kill me

Spoiler: There’s actually some interesting stuff in here.

“What can you tell me about Hateno Village, Seldon?”

“Well, I’m glad you’d like to know,” Seldon shouted, “Though I am kind of tired after our little showdown earlier, so hopefully you don’t mind if I give you a bit of an abridged tour?”

“Oh, don’t worry, I understand,” Vesti replied, slowly rotating his shoulder in the hopes of returning feeling to it.

“Well, Hateno Village is a quiet little place,” Seldon said, “You’ll find of the most of the essential shops on this here thoroughfare, including the East Wind general store, the Kochi Dye Shop, and my own clothing store! Spread out behind the storefront are the many cottages that the villagers call home. They’ve been built by our very own construction crew: Bolson Construction!”

“They must’ve been hard at work to build all of this,” Vesti remarked.

“They certainly were!” Seldon continued, pointing to the other end of the road. “Just down there, you’ll find the inn they constructed, and a little above that is our largest windmill, towering over the surrounding farmland. And if you’re willing to trek all the way up the mountain, you’ll come across the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab…though most of us villagers steer clear of there.”

“Why? What’s wrong with the tech lab?” Vesti asked, “Does anything suspicious happen over there, like weird screams at odd hours?”

“You have quite the imagination, fella!” Seldon said, “But no. It’s just not a particularly fun place, and the scientists working up there don’t interact with us much. In fact, I haven’t seen the director show her face in quite a while…”

“But anyway!” Seldon shouted, clapping his hands together. “The buildings and attractions aren’t what Hateno’s really about! It’s the people! And it’s about time you met some of them. In fact, why don’t you introduce yourself to those women over there!”

Seldon turned and pointed toward the two gossipping ladies, who were still absurdly focused on their conversation. It must have been a very stimulating discussion, as one of them seemed prepared to smack the other with her basket of vegetables.

“Uhh…I dunno. They seem pretty…focused on whatever they’re talking about.”

“C’mon, don’t worry about it,” Seldon replied, pounding his fists. “Everyone here’s raring to meet new people!”

“Well…if you say so. I might as well give it a shot! I could even get some information out of it…”

Present: Police Badge: Gossipping Ladies

Vesti sauntered over to the two women. Their discussion only seemed to grow more vitriolic as he approached, so Vesti quickly began to fear his safety. However, he had gone too far to turn back now.

Upon reaching the women, he firmly planted his feet on the ground and stared at them. Smiling, he introduced himself. “Hello, my name is…”

Vesti pulled out his police badge and held it out a proudly. “Detective Vesti Gates!”

The two women whirled around, glowering at Vesti. The leftmost one pulled a cabbage out of her basket and hefted it menacingly. “Oy, whaddaya think gives you the right to come botherin’ us?”

“Yeah, what she said!” The other woman cried, “We happen to be having an important discussion right now, and it ain’t the business of eavesdroppin’ strangers!”

“H-Hey, I wasn’t listening in!” Vesti said, “I’m just new here, and thought the two of you might have an, err…unique perspective I could learn about the town from!”

“And what’s that supposed to mean?!”

“It seems to me that you are dearly lacking in respect, young man!” The woman tossed her cabbage in the air and caught it in a frightening manner. “I suppose we’ll have to teach you!”

“W-Wait! L-Let’s not do anything too hasty!” Vesti insisted.

“Get ‘em!” The women hurled their assorted vegetables straight at Vesti.

The detective was soon forced to flee in a panic as the ladies pelted him with edible projectiles grown right on Hateno Village farms. The produce burst into pieces on Vesti’s back, covering his sweater vest with all manner of ghastly stains. Fortunately, Vesti’s police training had made him quite skilled a running swiftly, though not even he could withstand the large cooking ladle chucked at his feet which sent him tumbling to the ground.

Once the dust had settled, Vesti saw Seldon looming over him once again. He smiled and remarked, “Well, that went well, I think. Seems like you’ve already made a few friends!”

“You…call those friends?”

“Oh, of course! That’s how the two of them treat all of us!” Seldon explained, “It’s like you’re one of the townsfolk already!”

Vesti sighed as he got to his feet, dusting himself off. He glanced toward the women, who were chatting once again as if nothing had happened. “…Maybe next time you can introduce me to some less aggressive villagers.”

Talk: Seldon: Seldon

“So…now that that’s over with,” Vesti said, picking a tomato slice off of his sleeve. “I’d like to know a bit more about you, Seldon. What are your interests?”

“I’d have thought we got to know each other well during our little tussle, eh?” Seldon replied, placing his hands on his hips.

“Unfortunately, I’m a bit more fluent in words than in fists…” Vesti sighed.

“Well, I believe I’ve been quite open with all of my pursuits already,” Seldon explained, “Like I said, I’m the owner of the Ventest Clothing Store over there.” He nodded his head in the direction of one of the buildings. “Though Sophie, my daughter, is currently in charge of the place. Besides that, I enjoy a good wrestlin’ match once in awhile, but my true passion is giving these tours!”

“Do you get a lot of visitors around here?”

“Perhaps not as many as I’d like!” Seldon replied, “Though certainly plenty, seeing as we’re the largest Hylian settlement left…what with the Great Calamity and all. A lot of travelers head through this town to stock up on supplies and meet new people. Most don’t stick around though. I couldn’t imagine risking my life in those plains all day, but I suppose that’s how some folks prefer to live.”

“Why do you give all these tours, anyway?” Vesti asked, “I mean, it must be a lot of work to go prancing along this road all day…”

“Well, it helps our local businesses make more money, of course, but I also want folks to get involved in our community as soon as possible,” Seldon paused for a moment and then smiled wryly. “Speaking of which, you aren’t the only visitor we’ve had today. Another lad came in about an hour or two ago. He was real excited to look around. In fact, he practically outran me for the whole tour!” Seldon looked aside thoughtfully. “He was a bit strange overall, I suppose…a bit like you!”

“Ah, thanks for that…” Vesti mumbled, “Though…a strange visitor? I might actually know who you’re talking about…”

Present: Seldon: Chronos Kale

“Was his name Chronos Kale?” Vesti asked, “He should have been pretty noticeable, considering the huge leaf-shaped tufts of hair sprouting out of his forehead.”

Seldon shook his head. “Nope, never seen anyone like that round here. He sounds like a bit of a weirdo though…”

“Wait, what am I thinking?” Vesti exclaimed, comically slapping himself in the face. “Not Chronos Kale! I was actually talking about this person!”

Present: Seldon: Chronos Krate

“His name’s Chronos Krate…or at least that’s what he calls himself,” Vesti explained, “He’s always decked out in white, and he’s got this ring of orange hair orbiting around his head…so he’d be pretty hard to miss.”

Seldon gives Vesti a puzzled look. “Where do you meet all these weird people?”

“Uhh…Just don’t ask.”

“Well, if you say so. Just thought you could invite a few of ‘em to visit!” Seldon replied, “Anyway, the guy I’m talkin’ about didn’t look like that at all. Though I guess I didn’t get a good look at his hair, since he had some sorta weird…cloak on.” Seldon looked aside and crossed his arms. “I guess he’s still around here somewhere. I sorta lost track of him.”

“Could you tell me more about him?”

“Sure, whatever you want to know,” Seldon said, “It’d be good to have you two meet up anyway, seein’ as you’re both new here!”

(This other visitor showed up at around the same time I did. That can’t be a coincidence. Perhaps they could even tell me where tell me where Lauren or Chronos is!)

I swear this is obviously referencing to Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Not that Vesti would be familiar with the game, anyway.

Anyway, talk about the strange visitor.

Examine the windmill and make a Don Quixote reference like the cultured detective that we are.

Also NOW I'd like to ask Seldon about his least favourite colour so you better not ignore me.

Gotta investigate the inn! Always the inn.

Also investigate Seldon's clothing shop. Maybe the cloaked guy went there.

The only one that I have ever known

Talk: Seldon: Least Favorite Color

“Hey, Seldon,” Vesti said, “Out of curiosity, what’s your least favorite color?”

“Hmm…” Seldon rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “I’ve never really thought about that before…I’m usually more focused on the positives, y’know?”

“Well, just think about it,” Vesti continued. “Are there any colors that just make you wince in complete disgust?”

“No…not particularly.” Seldon slowly remarked. “Though I suppose I’m not too fond of red, but only since it reminds me of the Bokoblins.”

“Bokoblins?”

“Surely you’ve ran into at least a few Bokoblins,” Seldon said, “You’d easily recognize them by their red skin and grotesque features. They’re always attacking travelers in packs, hoping to make off with their supplies or their lives! They’re an absolute menace around here!”

“Well, have you ever tried simply talking to the Bokoblins to understand them?” Vesti asked, “Because that seems like a lot of generalizations you’re making. That kinda language wouldn’t fly where I’m from..”

Seldon gave Vesti a skeptical look, but eventually mumbled, “You know, that might not be a bad idea…” He pounded his fists and shouted, “Okay, next time I see a Bokoblin, I’ll give ‘em an instant tour, free of charge!”

“Glad we got that settled!” Vesti said, “…W-Wait, what’s this about a ‘charge?’”

Examine: Windmill

Surprisingly, Seldon seemed to be ignoring him now, so Vesti strolled down the man road and took a look around. The large windmill looming on the hill quickly caught his attention. Though it appeared to be a considerable hike from the inn at the end of the road, its massive size was immediately clear. Vesti watched as the windmill’s spokes lazily continued their clockwise spin.

“Impressive, isn’t it?” Seldon said, stepping over to join Vesti. “That windmill’s turnin’ all day, grindin’ the grains we grow on our fields into the food we eat! The Bolson boys did an excellent job. It’s got enough power to produce three nights of bread in just an hour!”

Vesti nodded and chuckled to himself. “It must be scary though having a huge dragon looming over your village all day. Maybe you could track down Don Quixote and drive it off?”

Seldon raised his eyebrow and looked down at Vesti. “Fella, you’ve got a real strange way of lookin’ at the world…”

“Ha! …Yeah, everyone tells me that…”

Talk: Seldon: Strange Visitor

“So, this weird visitor you mentioned…” Vesti asked, “Can you tell me more about what they looked like?”

“Hmm…Sorry, I couldn’t make much out thanks to their clothes. I can tell ya’ one thing though…They were wearin’ some kinda glasses!”

“Oh, really?” Vesti replied, his expression perking up. “Could you see any of their hair under the hood? Any chance it was orange after all?”

“Let me think…” Seldon looked off to the side. “It’s…possible…Thinking back on it, his hair just might have been orange!”

“That’s it, then! He must have been Chronos in disguise!” Vesti shouted, “Do you have any idea where he could have gone?”

“Unfortunately, I can’t tell you much. He just sorta snuck off while I wasn’t looking. Didn’t even wait for the tour to be over…” Seldon shook his head sadly. “I do remember he was wantin’ to check out the shops, though! He actually asked for some of my rupees, so he could get an early start. I agreed, as long as he promised to pay me back.”

“Rupees?” Vesti said, “Is that some kinda currency?”

“Well, yeah,” Seldon replied, “…How is this news to you? How far away did you travel here from?”

“Uhh…I’ll tell you later,” Vesti said, “I need to track down this visitor. We’ll check the shops one by one and see if he’s still here. Lead the way, Seldon!”

“Oh, alright! Didn’t realize this was so important to ya’. Let’s go!”

Examine: Clothing Store

“We’ll start with your clothing store.” Vesti glanced around the square, squinting at the buildings. He pointed at a somewhat squat house nearby with a leafy tree growing on its left and a slender chimney sprouting from its right. “That’s the place, right?”

“Precisely! You’ve learned a lot already!” Seldon replied, “Just don’t open the door too fast when you walk in. It might startle Sophie…”

Vesti and Seldon sprinted over to the clothing store and quickly climbed the wooden steps. As Vesti approached the open doorway, he began to hear voices from the inside.

“S-Sir, please, calm down!” a meek-sounding female voice cried. “I know I said I’d let you try on anything, b-but…you’re getting all the armor mixed up! H-Half of this stuff isn’t even for sale!”

“Could you please just leave me alone. I only wanted to try everything on,” a male voice said. With a sigh, he mumbled, “Really, you all were far less annoying when you were just data on a cartridge…”

“H-Huh?” Vesti said, “Wait, I know that voice! Come on!”

Vesti leapt over the threshold a little too quickly, knocking over a broom leaning against the wall. A young woman standing nearby - probably Sophie - shouted in surprise at his entrance, but Vesti didn’t notice. His eyes were focused on the figure in front of him, decked out in the most outlandish clothes he’d ever laid eyes on: a patchwork of heavy-looking armor in styles that didn’t even remotely resemble each other.

The unexpected noise drew the figure’s attention, and he turned to the entrance. Glaring into Vesti’s eyes through his wire-rimmed spectacles, his face quickly turned from one of annoyance to complete horror.

“…Damn it, not you again!”

Seeing the man’s face only confirmed Vesti’s suspicions. Thinking it back, it made sense that Seldon would have claimed the figure was wearing a cloak. After all, how else could Seldon’s antiquated vocabulary have described a hoodie?

“Percy Graham?!” Vesti shouted, “You’re certainly the last person I expected to find here!”

“I could say the same to you, Mr. Gates,” the poorly-dressed prosecutor replied, crossing his arms in disgust. “Though there’s hardly a single place where I would’ve hoped to meet you again.”

“Whoa, hold on!” Seldon said, “You two know each other?”

“Oh, please,” Percy said, giving Seldon a dismissive glare. “We’re just acquaintances at most. Certainly no one I’d seek out willingly.”

Vesti was about to reply, but he stopped himself. He looked around the room, taking in his surroundings. This town - Hateno Village - was nothing like any he’d ever encountered. The only familiar figure appeared to be this man, who by all means not fond of him. But what really mattered was getting answers.

“Alright…Percy, listen,” Vesti began. “I don’t know why you’re here, and I don’t know why I’m here either. In fact, I don’t even know where here is. So how about you drop the attitude for now? The two of us are both in the same situation here, so we’re gonna have to work together to figure out what’s going on.”

“Oh, I know what’s going on well enough,” Percy replied as a distressed-looking Sophie slipped into the shadows behind him. “In fact, before your arrival, I was actually enjoying myself…Though it seems you put a stop to that.”

“Wh-What? Don’t tell me you’ve been here before.”

“Hmm…It would certainly explain his actions during my tour,” Seldon added, “It almost seemed like he already knew everything I was telling him!”

Vesti turned back to the tour guide. “Seldon, you don’t happen to have anywhere private we could go to for a talk, do you? I need answers now.”

“Well, my private quarters are just upstairs. By all means, the two of you are welcome to talk up there!”

“I guess my fun’s over now then, huh?” Percy remarked dryly. “There’s no stopping you when you need something, Vesti.”

“Percy, you really don’t seem to be treating this situation quite as seriously as you should be,” Vesti said. “That’s certainly suspicious, and that means it’s my job to grill you for everything you’ve got!”

“Just give me a moment if you can,” Percy pulled a small bag out of a pocket somewhere in his armor and turned around. “Are you still hiding in some corner, Sophie? I’d like to make a transaction.”

Date: ??? Time: One Purchase and Awkward Walk Later. Location: Seldon’s Abode.

“So this is the place!” Seldon said after the group (minus Sophie) ascended the stairs and entered the nearest door. “I suppose it isn’t much, but I call it home!”

Seldon was hardly lying. The bedroom featured little else but a small window, a simple bed, and a few tables. It was little more than a humble sleeping area, though it reminded Vesti of his own apartment more than he liked.

However, the detective was strictly focused on business for now. He turned to Percy, who was now wearing his normal attire, though with a dark blue, intricately woven hood instead of his hoodie’s usual red one. “Alright, Percy. I’ve got plenty to ask you, and I’d like it if you answered with as little sarcasm as possible.”

Percy scoffed to himself. “Oh, believe me. It’s my pleasure.”

(Considering the circumstances, I’d expect Percy to be as worried and confused as I am, but he seems surprisingly calm. I’m certain he knows something I don’t…Time to find out what!)

“Oh, and don’t forget I’m still here!” Seldon suddenly shouted. “If the two of you have any questions, I’ll be glad to answer!”

Examine the journal. Gotta be juicy there!

Also show off my badge to remind Percy that mine is still shinier than his even in this game. Heck you too, Percy.

And of course ask him what his least favourite colour is.
