"We were sitting around for hours though. Like, if you were scared of Blight-Z getting out, you could have voiced that concern. I voiced that concern."

Midge gives Emma a funny look.

"Well, so that's it, there's no plan?"

Helios kneeled next to Adriana's corpse, staring at her body solemnly. After Midge's remark, he finally began to speak his confident voice now sounding exhausted.

"Exactly... This whole thing was just a waste... Completely avoidable. And now what are we supposed to do? Just wait to die? Even if we found vaccines, we'd starve to death eventually..."

"What do we do now?" Violet slumped against a nearby wall. "Just, like, wait for Ghost to come back? How long will that even take?"

Midge begins to smile.

"Well, I'm not done yet. Maybe we should check out the computer room. What if we can open a terminal on one of the computer and change a couple of variables in the code for this game and get ourselves more vaccines? Come on, there's gotta be more than two in this whole place. We might even be able to unlock doors or whatever."

"Plus, we've still got explosives if we do cure ourselves, Helios."

"True..." Helios replied, "Sorry, everyone. I guess I haven't really been thinking optimistically."

"But... Miss Montin," Helios asked, "What did you mean by your 'duty?'"

"I mean exactly that: I'm the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention." Emma explained. "We have been researching Blight and its effects for so long...when I realized what was going on here, my thoughts naturally turned to the effects this could have on the population at large. I immediately knew I couldn't let the virus leave this place."

"That's why I did what I did." She said, her eyes darting to Adriana's corpse for a moment. "Now that neither us nor Blight-Z can leave this place, I no longer pose a threat to any of you."

"Emma, where did Blight-Z come from? Or Blight-Y? Like obviously you know what they are, but you're director of the CDC. Why does Null know about them? How did he get them?" Midge wrings her hands nervously. "You said it was theorhetical or something?"

"They're all different strains of the same virus." Emma replied. "Blight-Z is a mutation we knew about due to patterns in the others, but it had never been actually observed before. Which is why I have no idea how Null knows about it, or how they got those vaccines. "

"Well, we found those articles about the CDC, right? People have been disappearing? Could it have been that they were kidnapped to work on this game? Do you know anything about that?"

In talking to Emma, Midge maintains a sincere and rather gentle tone, staying somewhat hunched over.

“Y-you’re what now?”, Albert asks, still trying to take in what just happened. “B-but whatever. S-so we have to w-wait till Ghost comes back…? B-but won’t the effects of the vaccines r-run out by then…? Oh, hell… What have you done?!”, he shouts at Emma.

With nowhere else to go, the group heads into the server room. They split up and look around for a while.

“Hello? Is anyone there?”

Midge looks around warily. “That sounds like…”

“Ghost!” Albert shouts, opening one of the toolboxes to produce a walkie-talkie. It was yellow with black controls, so it kind of looked like Ghost in a way. “Ghost?! You there?”

“Yes! Is everything ok?”

“Yeah, we’re fine.”

“Did Adriana make it?”

Albert shoots a glare at Emma. “...no, she didn’t. But that’s not important right now. Where are you?”

“I made it through a shower area, and found this walkie-talkie in one of the toolboxes. I was given some car keys but...it seems I can’t go outside until the decontamination process is completed. It seems they’re treating me like a human despite my being in a suit…”

“Alright well...we’ll keep this button held down so you can stay caught-up. And get out of there as soon as you can, alright?”

“Understood.”

“Alright, what else did we find?” Teddy asked.

“Six small computer terminals.” Helios sighed. “Well, there were seven but...yeah, sorry. Anyway, there’s also a main computer but it’s behind a glass door.”

“What about Bradley?”

“I went looking for him.” Violet answered. “He’s...sleeping in the library with Einstein. I left a note so he’d know where to find us if he woke up.”

Teddy leans in close to Emma. “The reason you’re alive right now is because we don’t think you’re a threat. But we haven’t forgotten about Adriana, and you better make damn sure that you’re useful.”

“...got it.”

The group was now set to search the server room. There was no telling how much time they had left.

Luckily it seemed no input was necessary on that one. The screen was just displaying a message, which was still visible.

Spoiler: Message
A programmer goes to the store. His wife tells him, “Pick up a loaf of bread. If they have eggs, get a dozen.”

An hour later, he returns with a dozen loaves of bread.

“Why would you buy these?!” She yelled.

“Because they had eggs!”

He randomly selected one of the six other terminals to check.

Violet rolled her eyes. "Please tell me that's just a terrible joke and not something we need to get out of here." She turned around to examine one of the terminals.

Only one of the terminals turned on. It seemed they were meant to be done in an order. An image displayed.

Spoiler:
Image

Beneath it was written: "SORT BY STR"

The images appeared to be an axe, bow, spear, sword, and wand. The order for the sort was probably ascending.

"It seems more likely that the 'STR' stands for 'Strength'" Helios said, giving Albert a perplexed look. "Though I'm not sure how exactly they'd be organized. If we're going by brute strength, perhaps it should be wand, bow, spear, sword, axe?"

Helios tried putting in that combination.

"Wait so we were supposed to come in here? Null left puzzles for us and everything." Midge cracks a smile, "this is a second wind for us for sure. Though, that puzzle seems kind of tough."

"Hey so Ghost, I heard you entered a decontamination area? Was it just a chemical shower? Does the chemical shower are have a glass wall in it? Have there been any robots rolling around?"

She joins Albert in checking out the next computer.

"There were some kind of showers, yeah," Ghost replied, voice coming through indistinctly over the walkie talkie. "I picked one and it started the process. No, um, robots or glass walls though."

"Huh, well that's odd," Midge responds to Ghost. "Anyway, I might know where you are so be sure to give updates in case I can help you out."

"Anyway, let's just sort them like Albert said, by string, since those are sorted alphabetically. Axe, Bow, Spear, Sword, Wand would be the solution then, right?"

Ding!

"H-Huh?" Violet was taken aback. "What's a 'string'?"

"It's like a word, kind of. More abstractly it's a data type used to represent text instead of numbers." Midge elucidated.

"O-Oh. Well, looks like another screen lit up."

Spoiler:
Given the following array of people: [Adriana, Albert, Bradley, Emma, Ghost, Helios, Midge, Teddy, Violet]

Divide them into the following three sets based on index, and ordered in each respective set:
Game Room:
Garden:
Library:

"I'm confused." Teddy frowned. "Index?"

"It's the [relative position in the array]." Albert explained. "A number. Should be fairly easy unless there's a trick..."

"H-huh? T-that was it...? But those were the actual order in the first place! What the fuck kind of trick question is that?!", Albert shouts. "A-anyway, I suppose we should try the obvious", he says matter-of factly, entering:

Game Room: 2, 5, 6
Garden: 1, 3, 8
Library: 9, 7, 4

"W-what? H-how can that be...?" Albert pauses. "Unless this array starts counting from 0 instead of 1...so from 0, 1, 2...all the way till 8 instead..."

He enters in the same solution as before but with each number decremented by 1.

"WHAT?!" Violet shouted. "Who the hell starts counting from zero?!"

"Well...programmers." Albert shrugged. "Let's check out the next screen."

Spoiler:
The screen displays pseudocode from no particular language:

Expected output: "NULL!"

Image

"...did they give the answer?" Ghost asked, after it was described to him.

"No, there's a bug. We're probably meant to solve that."

"I can't even read that shit..." Teddy grumbled.

"Ok." Emma nodded. "[main] and [solution] are functions. I think the key here is the [argument] that main is supplying to the other function."

"Yeah, that's what throws the error." Albert nods. "It's a null-type..."

"What's a null-type?" Violet asked.

"Well, you know how we mentioned Strings earlier? Those are an example of an object."

"So null would be like an empty string?"

"I don't think so." Ghost piped in. "An empty string is an empty string. Null is more like...the complete absence of any kind of value. So it can't be added to another object."

"But the solution has NULL in it...this sounds impossible..."

Code:
solution('NULL')

instead of

Code:
solution(NULL)

?" He quickly tries it out.

"...sorry, I'm still lost." Violet frowned.

"NULL is a null-type, but 'NULL' is a String." Albert quickly explains. "Anyway, next one."

Spoiler:
if/else statements are used to determine conditional branching. For example, if we wished to determine the winner of a game of Russian Roulette..

Code:
if bullet == 1:
    return Albert
elif bullet == 2:
    return Ghost
elif bullet == 3:
    return Midge
elif bullet == 4:
    return Teddy
elif bullet == 5:
    return Adriana
elif bullet == 6:
    return Emma
else:
    print('BULLET WASN'T LOADED!')
    return

Complete the following function. It returns the sum of two numbers, but if the sum is between 15 and 19 (inclusive), it returns 20.
Code:
add_two(a, b):
    // code goes here
    return a + b

"Sure." Albert quickly types up the following pseudo code into the computer:

Code:
add_two(a, b):
    if (a+b)>=15 & (a+b)<=19 :
    return 20
    else:
    return a + b

"Excellent, Albert!" Helios praised. "You'll get us out of here in no time yet."

"Wait a second..." Teddy glared at the screen. "if...ah! HAHAHAHA! That's why he bought twelve loaves! HAHAHAHA!"

"...let's check the other monitor." Emma suggested.

"Wait!" Violet interrupted. "Something else popped up on this one."

“What the hell…?” Albert was looking at a very long code file.

“What is it?” Ghost asked.

“It’s just code, but this is like hundreds of thousands of lines…”

“Can you read it?”

“Yeah...it’s stupid simple. It’s just a bunch of if and else if branches.”

Nervously, Albert showed a sample.

Spoiler:
Code:
...
elif input.is_like(“Null, how many fingers am I holding up?”) and speaker is ALBERT:
   return “FOUR”
elif input.is_like(“Null, who is standing on one foot?”) and speaker is ALBERT:
   return “Violet”

...

The script went on and on like that, containing almost exact wordings of all the questions they’ve asked Null, and some they haven’t. Though the file was far too large to check everything.

“This is no AI…” Albert muttered. “Any amateur could’ve made this...if they could somehow guess what we would say.”

"T-this is pretty fishy, actually...", Albert mutters. "B-but who would have all the time to write all this crap? ...Null is human, didn't she say?", he suddenly recollects. "Something's not right here... Have all the screens been finished yet? By my count, we only did 4 of those screens, r-right? What happened to the rest?"

The fifth screen shows:

Spoiler:
A string can be made into a substring like the following examples (assume String is "Nullification"):

str[1:] = "ullification"
str[:3] = "Nul"

Write a function that takes the first two letters of a string and move them to the end. If the length of the string is less than two, print an error message
Examples:
"Hello" returns "lloHe"
"a" prints "ERROR"

Code:
move_first_two(str):
     return ...
