Reid Marrow merged into the turning lane, passing a white van. The man in the blue Corvette was in fact the Prosecutor that had served within the system for 20 years now. He was exactly 40, and stern to the bone. His demeanor often resembled a stone, cold and grey. People within the D.A. office and lower chains often referred to him as Reid "Narrow", as a pun to his patience and humor.

This image was merely a facade...

Reid was a very deep man, always calculating and planning. He only laughed with those he felt comfortable around ,and those were his aides.

Speaking of aides....I need to call Natalie..., Reid thought to himself.

Reid pulled into the Osterling Opera House parking lot, and immediatly began recalling the facts as he knew them. The suspect had shot the victim in plain sight, in front of God and the world. There were an abudant number of witnesses, but it was the crime scene itself that pawed at Reid's curiosity. As he parked his car in the nearest place, the attorney stepped out of the vehicle, and reached for his cell phone in his pocket. He used the speed-dial to call up Natalie, and placed the phone to his ear. The ringer began it's normal ring, and Reid pushed up his glasses on his nose.

"Natalie, this is Reid, are you at the Detention Centre?......uhhhhummm...make sure to ask him about any tension between anyone else within the group. The more we know the better.........yes....yes....I'll be there to question him after I do some footwork here at the crime scene. Keep in touch...."

Reid closed his phone and slipped it back into his jacket pocket. He walked along the entrance way to where the door opened up to an investigation already underway. He slipped past the police forces fairly easily, as they all knew who he was. He decided to look around, finding his way to the stage, and where he assumed would be the backstage and cast rooms. As his feet glided across the polished wooden floor and the velvet curtain was pushed by, his eyes met with an individual. A quick look to the man's shirt collar reassured the notion: This man was Richard Glinkirev's Attorney.

Reid's eyes met with the officer who was engaged in conversation with this man. He had seen this man before, but all the faces of the force seemed to blend in at one point. Regardless, he walked over to the duo, as one man had already left. He looked at the Attorney and quickly held out a hand.

"Good day to you sir, I am Reid Marrow, the Prosecuting Attorney in this case.....and you are?"

His own Attorney Badge glittered from countless strokes of polish. Being an Attorney was the greatest honor for Reid, and he always let people know this.

When the introductions were through he would begin to ask the directions to the director's room, as this is where he would start his own investigation.

Satisfied that the other man had left, Natalie stepped in front of the man. "Hello. I'm Natalie Shea. May I ask you some questions?" she said, very businesslike.

Issac rushed back to the spot where he left Derek. He was still standing there when he arrived. "Wow slow cop.." he thought. "I'm back Derek.." Issac said regretfully.

I suppose there's no harm in talking about that... Richard thought. After all, there's no way that can make me look any more guilty.

"Hm... Where to start... She's very distant. We all think of her as our boss, and she's definitely fit for the job, but she never makes any effort to relate to her employees on a personal level--she claims it will give her a bias. She's extremely strict and tends to have a system for everything. Some people in the Company seem to think of her as a slave-driver, but considering how much more we get done--and how much more we get paid as a result--under her than we did under her predecessor, most of us don't have any issues with working harder."

"I believe my defense asked me a similar question. Well, Liszt was ridiculously immature, making dirty jokes that were far more offensive than funny, disrupting rehearsals with some stupid comment. His personality could easily be likened to that of an attention-craving high school freshman boy. In some cases, he even offends people on a personal level, though, admittedly, it's not always with the intent to annoy."

"I don't know about everyone, but I know Ms. Holgar dislikes the director; she's often complaining about being overworked or that the director is giving major roles to other sopranos more often just to spite her. Of course, she does have a tendency to take it personally whenever she doesn't get a major role, so it's almost certainly just her imagination.
"As for good feelings, I've become friends with Rufus Woodman, a tenor, and his wife, Olivia, a mezzo-soprano who's currently performing abroad.
"Then, of course, there's my daughter, who's in the orchestra. It's no secret within the Company that we're very close.
"I'm on neutral or close-to-neutral terms with everyone else, excluding Liszt, so I don't know much about anyone else."

Reid's eyes darted up as a new individual came to the group. He was the person who had left from the Attorney a few moments ago.

Derek...

Derek was the man's name. The name meant nothing, except to put a face to an opponent who would be faced on the battlefield of legality.

Reid pulled his hand back, and greeted the newly arrived individual.

"Hello there, my name is Reid Marrow....the prosecution in this case. You are?"

The more Reid could find out about the pair he was soon to face, the better. His intentions were not sinister, but he decided that defeat in a case was never an option. He held back his hand for Derek to shake.

He looked at the cop the cop standing next to Derek and began to speak.

"Now, since I'm the Prosecution, do I need clearance or an escort in this place, or may I go to the Director's Room? I'd like to start my investigation as soon as possible Officer."

He needed to finish this and get some more information from the Defendant, he was sure Natalie could handle herself. But he felt compelled to question the man himself. This trial had a very straightforward look, but the atmosphere of this Opera House made the hair on the back of his neck stand up.

Sad, when a Dectective can't show up when paged...especially since this detective was assisting in the case. Reid thought to himself.

"No problem Officer, I understand. Without a system, where would we be?"

He flashed the badge on his left collar, it was made of silver, to accent the buttons on his jacket.

Reid took a breath and stated "If need be Officer, I can wait my turn to be escorted, no reason we can't wait our turn."

"I'll contact another investigator to escort you. One moment, please." The officer took out his radio and typed in a number.

"Patrolman Briggs," the voice on the other end said.

"We need an escort for the prosecutor. We're in the backstage hallway near the stage door."

"I'll be there right away, sir."

Patrolman Biggs was on his way, and then the investigation could start.

Reid looked at the Officer and said "Thank you, I appreciate it."

"No problem," the first officer said.

Briggs proceeded to the Director's Office and opened the door, holding it for the prosecutor.

"More investigators, I'm guessing," the director said as the door opened.

Reid didn't wait for the other men to answer him, if they were not gonna respond, then he might as well wait until another time.

He walked behind Patrolman Briggs, and walked through the door as the officer held it open for him.

"Thank you sir."

He heard a woman say something about more investigators and realized this woman was the director.

"No Ma'am, more like Prosecutor. I'm Reid Marrow, and you are?"

He held his hand out to shake her's, a normal gesture for the man to do.

"The loud parts are easy to hear, but since Mazeppa has a soft ending, someone from the crew comes for me when the opera's coming to a close. I had no trouble hearing all of the commotion after the shot.
"As for leaving my office, I never said I didn't leave during the performance; I just said I was in my office when the shot was fired. I sometimes walked around in the hallway during the earlier acts. One of the performers--Woodman--had dropped his wallet in the hallway at some point, which I retrieved. I found him snooping around the other performers' dressing rooms in search of it later, so I returned it to him. Other than that and the shot, nothing particularly noteworthy happened."

Reid wrote down the catchy parts of the information he had just recieved.

"I'm sorry, my mistake Ma'am. So Woodman lost his wallet, was this before the performance, during or after it?"

"If you'll be escorting us, then, sir." Derek politely remained silent when the prosecutor, Reid Morrow, introduced himself. Certainly a cold one. Not that Derek blamed him. Mr. Morrow was a prosecutor, and Derek was a defense attorney. They were professional rivals, it was nothing personal. At least, Derek didn't think so.

"I'd very much like to check my client's room. Issac, shall we go?"

The other officer led the defense team into Richard's room. There were two other costumes hung up near the wall, both looking like something an old Russian noble would wear, Richard's normal clothes were folded neatly and sitting on an armchair, and some cosmetics were on the small table near the mirror. The program was near the cosmetics.

Issac strolled into the room and looked around. "So, were looking for a script, right Derek?" he said. He sauntered over to the cosmetics table and spotted the program on top of it.

"Hey Derek, look what I found." he said after walking back over to him and showing it to him.

"Good, that's what we needed." Derek responded. He had Issac handle the script for right now. He could read it when he got a moment. Right now, what he needed to find out who was in charge of that gun. That would be the best angle to present in court; motive was useless here, since everyone seemed to have it in for the unfortunate defendant.

That meant talking to the director. But that was where the prosecutor went. Would there be someone else to speak to, someone else who used a gun in the play?

Derek decided to paw through the script a moment.

((To clarify, it's not a script; it's a program--details on the singers, a description of the opera, and things like that. The actual script wouldn't be in there (not to mention that part would be in Russian if it was).))

Program added to the Court Record.

The program was split into six sections: Soloist Bios, Director and Conductor Bios, Chorus Roster and Orchestra Roster, Synopsis, Contributions and Acknowledgments, and Advertisements. A photograph of one of the scenes--probably taken during a dress rehearsal--was on the cover, along with the title:

Mazeppa
An opera in three acts by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
