If you go to visit someone in jail, those in detention and those visiting are separated by a screen which I assume to be toughened glass (if the Magistrate's courtroom I've seen is anything to go by). The shine in the photo presented by Franziska in Case 2 showing that Maya's body alters to resemble that of who she is calling proves this.

In Case 3, Max gets Maya AND Phoenix to pick a card, how is this possible with this glass screen between them?

There is also this quote from the same case!

Maya Fey Umm... There's a big piece of security glass between us...

Easy.

Remember that Phoenix said 'what about my card...?'

He wouldn't say that if he was holding the card, would he? Marshall

Actually, I can prove both those points to be wrong.

Mikker: Phoenix was referring to guessing which card Phoenix had taken. It's a basic magic trick, you hold a whole deck in your hand, someone takes a card, and you say which card was taken. Phoenix took a card but Max moved on without saying which it was (he said to keep it as a souvenir)

HyperJerk: The trick wouldn't work unless the deck was in Max's hand. I know because, although I never succeeded in its performance, I learned how.

Spoiler: Card trick secret
The cards are sorted into order, red on one side, black on the other, Ace-King in their respective suit. After someone has taken a card, one would see which card was missing thanks to that order. If one had used the trading hole, there is a significant chance of this fact being revealed, thus breaking the Magician's secret rule, or mixing up the deck.

The Trick still would work. Maya picked a card and Max gave it to her through the slot.

Hmm... But there are 52 cards to choose from... he could've picked one in the general area that they pointed in, he would've had to take extra care to make sure it didn't look like he looked though...
