Going from memory...

Gumshoe tries to eat it because he's so hungry he thinks its candy. Yeah, he's definitely living below the poverty level.

And, when you inspect the magatama of doom, I seem to remember Phoenix mentioning there's a huge magatama enshrined, then wondering, if you can use the little one to see psyche-locks, what on earth you could see if you used the big one.
