There's an off-chance that the BBC might be back up sometime as I understand it. Why take off the board now if it might be back? The topics in it are the rules for the BBC topics and the chatroom, both of which would be important to have for future members joining the community and if the BBC made a return.

I see the forums are in working order again.

What happened that caused them to crash, anyway?

Overactivity on the forums, mainly the BBC was to blame for it, since most Forum Activity seems to stem from there... assuming my facts are properly organized... Heh...

Edit: I just recently realized that an argument I had made was deleted from this topic, and I can't search my posts to make sure it was sent... goody.

I don't know if we're in the clear yet, but according to the dreamhost provided stats page, we were loading 2/3rds the number of pages we were before the forums went down.

That means that potentially, the BBC and the Search page accounted for 1/3rd of the forum activity. That's not a small percentage.

Does that automatically translate to load times? I don't know at this point.

I think he means that now we're only loading 2/3 the ammount of pages that we did prior to the forums breaking. That may be because of the BBC & search being gone, but it could also be from nervousness of using the boards now. We might not be going as much as before the forums went down.

Ah, that's much clearer. Thanks!

Once again, however, I want to state something, and it's a flaw in your earlier response to a part of my message:
Wooster wrote:
The problem with that logic is that Wright and Co, Global Studios, and the Police Station together had less posts then the BBC as it was

Problem is, that logic is useless, since it doesn't destroy my idea of taking them away to make the forums more PW-oriented... they can still be taken away, I mean... hmm... *thinks of a metaphor*...

Lets say you buy a Handgun for about 10,000 (Resident Evil 4 Example!), and you get handgun ammo for free. Now, if you were to SELL the gun just to make money, you wouldn't keep the AMMO because it doesn't fetch a high price, you'd sell it too, because you might as well if you're selling the handgun!

BBC and the "Other Areas" go with the same logic: If we're trying to make it more PW Oriented, we don't just get rid of the "Main Problem" and ignore other aspects that, though less of a threat, are still threats! If there's a guy trying to shooting you with a gun, and another one attacking you with a Knife, you don't just try to take out the one with the gun because he's the "Main Problem", you have to make sure ALL problems are taken out of the equation! The problem wasn't the posting, it was the uselessness of some of the posts, and the quantity of said posts!

Now if you excuse me, I'm going to sit and ponder why I didn't just use the "Knife and gun" metaphor in the first place.

Actually, if anything, during busy times on the server I'm noticing it's actually loading slower than before. Maybe our CPU quota was cut down? :/

2/3 of the activity we were pumping out before is still a lot, though, and I seriously wonder how long it'll be before we overload the server based purely on quality content - at the rate we've been getting new members, two, three months, tops? ://
Does we even do these things anymore?

It doesn't help all the "Bad Advertising" that brings people here, such as SA.com, etc... But then again, I guess that's just life with a Forum, eh?

We've (i.e. my idea, Wooster implements) just made a change to the PHP configuration on this server, hopefully resulting in a lower server load/faster page loading. I'm sure Wooster will tell us all about it if it does, and if it doesn't, it'll be quickly forgotten about.

Sooo, Is there any chance of us getting, like, at least 1 of the Search options back in the future or are they gone for good too.

See, I was upset when I first learned the "Search" option wasn't there anymore, but I thought "Okay, I can deal with that I guess..." but then when I learned I can't check my own message history... well, to put it subley, I got mad.

I'm sorry, but I don't think the gun and knife metaphor is a right one. In my opinion the non-PW related forum sections are more like sweets and cakes, rather than knives and guns. It's a nice thing to have the the dessert, but if you have too much it can do harm to your health. Now BBC is a huge cake, and the other sections are small ones. Since you wanna keep as many cakes as possible, I think it's a good idea to just give up the biggest one.

Brief update with dreamhost, we're running roughly 1/3rd the rate we were when we got shut down. It's still too high, but I don't think the admins at dreamhost have hit the alarms, run through hidden doors, entered the WAR ROOM, meeting with the worlds top Generals and planing a strategic assault on us.

I think we're back down to the standard police banging on our doors while we hide under the bed pretending we're not home.
