Post subject:  New IRC Chatroom

EDIT: We're at #courtrecords on Dynastynet. Come join us!

As one of our steps towards improving CR's community (and especially communication between members and admins) we figure it's time to fix one of the problems that's been around for a while that's within our pretty immediate power to fix: a new IRC room. The last one had it's problems, and this time we want to start out right, which is why we're currently asking for a pair of members to step forward that would be interested in being official channel mods. We're especially hoping to have two that are in varying time zones to maximize effectiveness. If you're interested, please let me know here~ (or via email)

The reason I'm bringing this up first is because I'd like to use the chatroom as a place to discuss ideas for the site, since threads clog up fast and with the walls of text we've been bouncing back and forth, some voices get lost. Especially when it comes to picking mods, some things are better done after chatting with a person live. And I've wanted to restore the chat for a while now anyway.

So, if you're pretty well versed with IRC and would like to help mod a sparkly new chat (keeping things friendly, kicking out trolls, helping to come up with scheduled chat topics, etc) please respond here and be sure to mention your time zone!

Post subject:  Re: New IRC Chatroom

It's been a long time since I've used IRC, but I have a fair amount of experience with the chat system. I'll be rusty for a few days but if I could assist you here, that would be great.

To be honest, my hours are all over the place (I have an erratic sleep schedule) but I am available most hours of the day, in particular 4pm-12am BST. (That's 11am-7pm EST.) I would offer to be around for longer but I can't guarantee I will be around beyond that timeframe. If this changes (and come late September, that's likely), I will let you know immediately. :)

Hmmmm, interesting.

Like Velo I've not used IRC for ages, and when i mean ages, I mean a significantly long time ago that I can barely remember. ^^;

I do have the possible appeal of living in Australia, meaning That my timezone is quite close to the opposite of most people here~
For Note, My time zone is GMT+10

Umm, yeah. -_-

Yes! An IRC room! I can't wait! I've used IRC for a total of six years, but to be completely honest, I don't even know any basic operator commands, a little embarassing to be sure. I wouldn't make a good mod, but I'll definitely try to be a regular user.

I'd be interested in this. ^_^
It's been quite a long time since I've used IRC, but I used to run bots on an IRC channel before. I'm sure that I could get back into the swing of things. XD

I'm on the East Coast of the US, so I'm in the EST timezone. I could be online weekdays from 6pm-11pm, and weekends are wide open. ^_^ (I do work 40 hours a week. XP)

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a form of real-time Internet chat or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication via private message, as well as chat and data transfers via Direct Client-to-Client.

IRC was created by Jarkko Oikarinen in late August 1988 to replace a program called MUT (MultiUser talk) on a BBS called OuluBox in Finland. Oikarinen found inspiration in a chat system known as Bitnet Relay, which operated on the BITNET.

IRC gained prominence[citation needed] when it was used to report on the Soviet coup attempt of 1991 throughout a media blackout. It was previously used in a similar fashion during the Iraqi invasion. Relevant logs are available from ibiblio archive[1].

IRC client software is available for virtually every computer operating system.

ChatZilla is an IRC client, written in XUL and JavaScript for Mozilla web browsers.

It is designed to run on any platform on which Mozilla runs, such as Mac OS, Linux, BSD, Microsoft Windows, Solaris, IRIX, BeOS, AIX, HP-UX, and OS/2. It currently supports most features of IRC clients, such as connections to multiple servers, IPv6, SSL and UTF-8. It supports JavaScript as a scripting language. Messages are styled using CSS, which means that the style of the client can be easily changed, including one that places photographs next to the names of users who speak in the channel. Features such as DCC, which allows users to transfer files between one another, are now supported.

Work on ChatZilla progresses, and ChatZilla is currently included with the Mozilla Application Suite and SeaMonkey as well as being available for Mozilla Firefox as an optional extension. It is also available as a standalone version which runs on top of XULRunner.

(In short, anyone who has Firefox can simply download ChatZilla to access IRC channels using Firefox. People using Trillian or the open-source Pidgin can also use these to visit IRC chatroom channels.)

IRC is supreme old-skool, and that's reflected in the way it's designed. Don't let the jargon put you off - IRC is one of the easiest to use and most reliable chatroom systems in existence.

I wouldn't want to mod this since I don't do chats (especially busy ones as I imagine this would end up being) very well due to being a slow typer but I will try to be part of this and aid whoever mods from the sidelines.

Post subject:  Re: New IRC Chatroom

I still use IRC occasionally, though it's been more than ten years since I last modded a channel though (longs for olden days!) and I was known for taking no crap. If there's a Court Records channel, then I imagine I might be on there more :karma:

GMT timezone as well (another UK bod)... still despite someone else from this island offering, I certainly am interested in helping out. You'll need a wide range and a certain number of mods anyhow because chances are, you'll only get a fractional subset of them online at any one time...

I'm sure I can pick it up again fairly quickly with regards to the banning commands heh...

Out of interest, which servernet (EFnet, Undernet, QuakeNet etc) will the channel be running on?

Well not browser based (I'm not sure how many are), you'd want something like mIRC to get you going...

I would like to try as an IRCop.

I have been using IRC for a few years and I'm quite familiar with it. I use XChat which is a decent piece of free software. I am online on IRC a good lot of the time and when I have my computer on so is XChat, so I would be active and keep on top of my duties.

I'm also in the GMT timezone.

If you need to hit me up, PM me.

Mibbit is free (seemingly) and not even Java-operated.

I'd like to sign up for this. I've been using mIRC for about a year now and I'm currently a half-op on two channels related to a well-known RPG Maker community and I know at least basic operator commands.

My timezone's GMT and when school restarts I'll be around mostly in the afternoon (5:00-6:00 PM, and then 8:00-10:30 with a break for dinner probably).

Mibbit also has the advantage of being integratable into phpBB3 and SMF... And it'll carry your username across. (Unless characters not allowed in IRC, blah blah blah).

Post subject:  Re: New IRC Chatroom

I wouldn't worry about Mibbit etc. I believe there is still an applet provided for the current room. I imagine it will be updated for any new one. Of course, if it is going to be on dynastynet still (which im guessing it will since Croik's RP channel is still there), then there is an applet on dynastynet's homepage. Or rather on a page linked from there.

Post subject:  Re: New IRC Chatroom

I really am glad to see an IRC room being started up.

Unfortunatly, I can't moderate (school + parents means that I'm going to be on the internet for only a few hours a week or so), even though I'd probably love to (although my lack of programming skills makes me a pretty bad candidate... but I'll be taking programming this year... >__>)

I'll be a regular visitor when I can, and even help if the opportunity comes up. So, go go go! Can't wait to see the final product :)

I have no time to help op (silly classwork, especially this semester) but I have plenty of experience with IRC and would like to help out in any way that I can. Post subject:  Re: New IRC Chatroom

I could definitely do this. I've been on IRC for a few years (three, maybe? November 05, I think.) and I'm very proficient with channel operator commands, modes, mIRC specific commands, pretty much IRC in general. I'm familiar with IRC services as well, but only ones are are similar to Anope's. Services like the ones on Gamesurge make me scratch my head, but as long as the network the channel is on uses Anope or something similar, I'm good.

EDIT: Croik's post reminded me; I'm in EST as well, and I'm on pretty much all hours of the day, because I have no life, but sometimes I'm away for like six hours at a time playing Guitar Hero, and I also will start school soon.

Post subject:  Re: New IRC Chatroom

It'll be on Dynastynet because for some reason I can't remember that's where I always am B: Though before anyone gets excited, that RP chat mentioned is private XD;;;

Anyway, it's easy to get to Dynasty via the link posted upthread. mIRC is free, and even though it supposedly has a 30 day trial period you don't have to pay even after that runs out. I've been using my mIRC for free for a few years >.>

Plus there are always Java apps and things. Right now there's a Java app linked from the site, but it's not the greatest. There are lots of ways to get into IRC and it's pretty intuitive, so I hope we're able to get some good activity going.

Thank you all for volunteering. Lots of GMTers! Most of our current mods are in and around EST so that works out pretty well. Wooster's not around to help make this official but we're gonna open the room up as soon he gets back. Our first scheduled chat session should be Sunday, 'cause I won't be around Saturday at all. Once it's up we should get a good picture of who will be around when.
