It took us a little longer than we hoped to get up and running, but voting for the Sprite Cup 2013 (or is it 2014?) is now in session! You can cast your votes over at the official voting page.

We’re trying something a little different this year - rather than just vote for your favorite entry, you’ll be asked to rate each entry in three categories (creativity, composition, and style).

Voting will run through February 14th, at which point we’ll use the results to decide a final few entries to open for final voting.

Thanks so much for participating!

Just voted, and a few entries surprised me with their overwhelming amount of detail and animations!
I'm at a serious 4 way tie in my mind for the winner, so best of luck everyone!

Seeing the whole entries (and not just a preview image) made the decision even harder as I ended up liking more than half of them. I think I know who will win, but it should be a close run until the end.

These entries are truly outstanding! I feel bad that I had to lower my scores just to differentiate between them :P

wow...probably the best group of sprites i've seen in a sprite cup made it so much harder when voting >_>;;;
(even worse since mine was the only sprite entry that i saw that was a stand alone sprite...i get this feeling that alone is gonna hurt its votes.)

also that's odd...i coulda sworn i sent a name for the character with the sprite entry which was right under the sprite >_>;;;...though i'm not hating the name lady bagpipes. xD

I voted and solely based on the categories, I don't care what their backstories may have said.
They didn't influence anything for me, since backstory is not part of the actual sprite part.

Votes sent but...There's something I'd like to mention. It's about that Diego Armando sprite, namely its sheet and to put more clearer it's zoom pose.
For quick comparison, here's the Diego edit I once did.

I'm not sure it's fair to have 'Creativity' as a voting category. This isn't an OC contest, some folks excellent entries might get less points because they are seen as less 'creative' having been pulled from existing things.

And on the flipside, working against the OC's

Style: "Could you picture it in AA?" Again while you do mention "Do they look like they'd fit?" I still think this might result in a bit of bias against OC characters compared to AA characters as obviously they'll 'belong' more.

Voting anyway.

That's pretty serious; thanks for bringing it to our attention. We'll be disqualifying that entry.

im not sure thats really the case pierre the reason is those are likely to get highly voted simply due to the fact there this character or that character as such are likely to get voted high in all categories high just to increase there chances in winning (plenty of people just vote things they like and could care less about what category it is)

its fair i think when it comes down to it you shouldn't be judging the character or appearance alone in this category but how the sprite is in comarison to other sprites in the seires.

Well for creativity, I mostly looked at how... eh, don't really wanna use the word unique, but I might have to. I check to see if it looks as if someone took their time into designing this thing or simply added some color into something else and called it done.

Also, I do not see why Creativity should have anything to do with an OC character. Yes, an OC has to be unique and not look like the standard, interchangable character you can swap with almost anyone and nobody would know the difference. But too "creative" can backfire terribly on an OC, too.

As for Style, I understood that part as "How well do you think this character would look, if they were to actually appear in an AA game?" which is how I looked at them. For example, not naming anything, but I gave one entry a higher Creativity vote, but a lower Style vote. Mostly because, while the character looked creative and neat, I could not picture such a character actually appearing in an AA game without looking horribly out of place.
It had nothing to do with the base somehow belonging to a "canon" AA character, but mostly just how the character overall looked and, as I said, how out of place they would look, if they were in the game.

The point of the Style category is to encourage people to sprite in the art style of the AA sprites. It has nothing to do with the design, but more to do with, if you put this in an AA game, would its sprite look out of place. Some succeed very strongly in that category, others fall pretty short.

That's what you need to look for in Style.

For creativity, I checked design of the characters and/or the animations for those that had 'em. It takes a lot of ability and creativity to give sprites a unique animation, so that counted for a lot in my books.

I uh, got mixed up between composition and style so my grading is kind of all over the place there hahahaha. I forgot what those two were supposed to mean...

Wasn't composition about how 'clean' the Sprite looked? ie. not haggered lines all over the place or an obvious white line around a transparent sprite.

Like for composition and style, I can take Percei's avatar and sig as an example... his avatar has a strange composition, the lines look uneven and dotty in places. The style overall would fit in the AA game, but still look out of place cause the colors are a bit bright. Then look at the signature: the lines are cleaner, the colors darkened. It would fit very well into an AA game now.

I think I went with it like that, so maybe it's not too inaccurate after all...

And thanks for the compliment on the sprite in Percei's sig ;D

I noticed that one of the animations I sent for my entry wasn't shown. Was it just overlooked accidentally in the e-mail?

You're welcome! :gant:

Pure coincidence, I was looking at Percei's avatar and sig and noticed it was a good example to use.

I'm very impressed with everyone's spriting skills. I wish all of them could win, they are all so close in quality. May the best entry win!

And here I was thinking I might someday get good enough at spriting to enter one of these contests with the hope of winning...

But everyone's sprites are so fantastic! I even gave perfect scores to a few of them!

...I'll just stick with writing fanfictions. ^^

The Cabanela sprites are among the greatest custom sprites I've ever seen, they're absolutely amazing! It's made me want to actually finish Ghost Trick now. It was hard to rate the rest, but I think I was quite fair.

I thought the Diego was getting disqualified though..

XD Yeah I felt bad seeing the Cabanela one first, it set the bar so high. I mean it's cool when you look at the preview of the sprites in the other thread and you see him. THEN you see the rest of his sprites on his page and someone made up his whole DANCE! That's awesome.

Oh god yeah the dance. I already thought Cabanela was going to be my fave and then saw the dance and it confirmed it for me hahahaa

I'm fairly certain Cabanela's going to win this.

And you know what? I'm perfectly fine with that. There would be absolutely no shame in losing to something that great.

Is there any way to look at the full sets of entries? I wanted to look back at some of them but I can't access them from the survey since I already took it last week.

We'll be putting up a full entry page (including non-finalists) once the voting is over.
