Well, it's not technically out until tomorrow, but it's up on the net now.

Image

The title screen is virtually the same, only with Cape West instead of Hotel Dusk.

There's a big movie intro of the diamond theft/murder in the fifties, the poisoning in the sixties, and Kyle getting fired and returning to Cape West, which you open by tapping on the doors like in HD.

The music is great.

The game seems to take place over days, not hours, since Chapter 1 is just December 18.

Steve wears pink pants.

The animation is all great.

Sometimes it keeps playing the character's theme while questioning instead of a different theme, like in Another Code.

Also maybe it's just me but this is the first game I've seen no$gba really, really choke on. Wouldn't recommend playing it.

Brushing through the files with VGMTrans, there's definitely some of the old BGM in there. If it's anything like Another Code R, it'll probably show up near the end of the game.

Looks to be about 39 new or remixed tracks, plus about 17 old ones. The remixed tracks, unless there's more unlabeled ones, are Insomnia, Violet Sky, The Long Night, Over Easy, and Sunset Men. Violet Sky in particular has an excellent jazzy remix now. Unfortunately my audio recording is acting up and anything I record off VGMTrans gets muffled, so I can't do any samples.

I'll probably play up through the first confrontation.

Cape West has four floors and a basement - much bigger than Hotel Dusk!

You can tap the screen anywhere to advance conversation now, not just the bottom area with the arrow.

Doors are 3D now. Characters who open one a little have their image shaded to make it seem like you're seeing them through the crack of the door.

no$gba doesn't like Hotel Dusk, either! I couldn't even talk to Dunning at the front desk without it crashing. I ended up borrowing from a friend to tide me over until I could afford to buy it myself xD

Doesn't work that great with flashcards either - freezes here and there, even with a fix.

Chapter 1 is very short. Chapter 2 starts the next day, the 19th.

When the phone rings in Kyle's room you don't have to walk over to it and examine it anymore, there's a button that instantly answers it.

After Chapter 1 you unlock the novel, which also has a BGM player. Lots of songs - either I underestimated or it lets you listen to the HD songs that play as well. Serenity from Hotel Dusk got a remix too.

It's shaping up to look great! Hoepfully NP next month confirms a localization.

And the music.....Can't wait! :D

Just a question: How go you get new chapters for the novel?

Just finished Chapter 2. No confrontations yet, so I guess it's longer than Hotel Dusk.

Every time you finish a chapter you unlock another in the novel. There's still the end-of-chapter questions though.

Spoiler: Walkthrough through Chapter 2
Chapter One (December 18, 1980):
Open the door.
Talk to Steve. I picked the top option both times.
When you regain control, talk to Steve again, then ask about the new question.
Talk to Margaret. Again, I picked top option both times.
When you regain control, Talk to Margaret again, asking about the new question and the following one.
Go over to the mailbox and select the bottom-left one.
Turn it left to 7, left to 7, then right to 1.
Pick up the middle letter, then check the top one.
Go up the stairs and watch the cutscene with Dylan.
Go to room 202 and use the key on the door.
Use the phone icon.
Go over to the table.
Chapter end questions: Top, middle, top

Chapter Two (December 19, 1980):
9:00 AM
Answer the phone.
Check the TV and switch over to news.
Answer the door.
Pick the bottom option.
Talk to Marie about everything.
Choose the top option.
Go to room 206 (the door's open.)
Check the paper on the table.
(Do NOT talk to Marie then pick the second option. You'll get booted out into the hall, where the only thing to do is get a Game Over by talking to Steve.)
Go over to the mirror near Marie's bed and check it. Look down between the desk and shelf to find the ring.
Go over to the couch and check the dress. Take the thread.
Go over to the drawers underneath the flower painting (by the door) and examine them. Take the measuring tape and safety pin.
Combine the safety pin and thread in your items.
Go over to the ring and use the measuring tape. Pull it out partway, then snag the ring with it.
Talk to Marie.
Talk to Steve. Press him when prompted and choose the bottom option.
Talk about everything.
Go back to Room 202 and use the phone.
Go up to the third floor and talk with Dylan about everything.
Go up to the fourth floor and do the same.
Go over to the left hallway door and try the handle.
Go to the switch on the other wall and flip both handles to off.
Choose the bottom option.

4:00 PM
Tune the TV to the news.
Go downstairs and talk to Charles. Press/choose the bottom option.
Go to the cafe.
Talk to the man at the cafe. Press and choose the top when prompted. After talking with him, choose the bottom option.
Talk to Sidney.
Chapter end questions: Middle, Bottom, Top, Top, Middle

Serenity remix? YES!

Thanks for the impressions, I'm way too excited for this game. All the small improvements sound nice.

oh, and Famitsu also scored it: 9/8/8/7

Thanks God, you haven't put any copyright on that phrase? Because...

Must... get... soundtrack!

However, I'll wait until I've beaten the game before listening to the soundtrack. Don't want to get spoiled!

Dunno why, but I'm really glad to hear about that. Not because it may be longer than HD (HD was quite long itself), just... I found all the chapter ending with a confrontation kinda... artificial, if you understand what I mean.

That's what you get for trying to play illegally this awesome game, you fool shall perish under the tempest of my wrath! (j/k, besides, this doesn't mean anything at all, but wth)

Actually, waiting until chapter 2 to do a confrontation isn't unprecedented. Hyde didn't wail on Melissa until about then, and if I recall, she was first.

Nope, the first confrontation is with Louie in Chapter 2.

Though I can't be sure I get the feeling either Margaret or Frank will be first on the chopping block, considering Margaret and Sidney started rambling on about "13 years ago" and room 302 where Frank stays. For a while I thought I was going to take on Marie or Steve but their little altercation wrapped itself up without Kyle putting anyone to the coals.

Just finished Chapter 3 and the first confrontation.

Spoiler: Not really spoilers
I was wrong - first person you take on is Rex. He and Marie seem connected.

The game uses the old Resolution theme with slightly different instrumentation, but there's a whole new On The Rocks-esque piece for questioning.

No Violet Sky afterwards! Aww... then again, Rex didn't seem like he was about to open up even after I confronted him, so maybe it's appropriate. :shoe:

I'll probably stop playing now, unless Mila comes knocking in the Chapter 4 opening or something.

Spoiler: Chapter 3 Walkthrough
Chapter 3
Answer the door. (If there's an option, pick top, I can't remember if there is)
Go to Kyle's briefcase and check it. Grab the wallet.
Answer the door.
IGNORE the press prompt when it shows up - that is, just keep tapping the conversation arrow.
Answer the phone.
Talk to Steve.
Go over to the Red Crown box and pick up the ruler in the upper right.
Go over to the closet and look at the Pinkie Rabbit bank. Use the ruler.
Jiggle the bank up and down until the coins slide down the ruler.
Go over to the stereo and look at the change jar.
Shake it until coins fall out.
Leave.
Go up to room 304 and use the doorbell.
Choose the bottom option when talking to Dylan.
Go over to Angel Opening a Door and solve the jigsaw puzzle.
Get the hammer from Dylan.
Go back to 202 and use the hammer on the change jar.

2:00 PM
Go down to the lobby and ring the doorbell at Margaret's room.
Talk to Margaret and give her the money, then talk about everything.
Go to the cafe.
After the scene, go out to the lobby.
Choose the top option.
Talk to Rex.
Press when given the option and choose the bottom option.
Go up to the second floor and get the letter that's sitting on the floor.
Go to 206 and talk with Marie about everything.

6:00 PM
Go to the door and answer it.
Give Dylan the hammer.
Go to Kyle's radio and adjust it until you hear music.
Go down to 206 and talk to Marie, then go down to the lobby.
Go into the cafe and check the tree.
Get the radio behind the tree.
Go back out and talk to Rex.

Confrontation: Rex Foster
Press and choose the top option.
Show Rex the radio.
Press when given the prompt and choose the bottom option.
Question one: Bottom option
Question two: Top option

End of chapter questions: Bottom, middle, middle, bottom, top.

Yeah, you kinda fell into a routine: Chapter begin, phone call, random task from Rosa, horribly stuck (cue rabid door-knocking), remember what you were doing, confront someone, remember stuff to yourself, chapter end.

Do you still have to remember things to yourself? That was a pretty bad gameplay mechanic in both Trace Memory and Hotel Dusk, as well as being unintentionally hilarious. (What was the name of the guy I've been spending the last 3 years chasing again?)

If you mean the end-of-chapter quiz, yeah, it's still there.

In terms of the phone routine, it doesn't seem quite as set in stone - but then again, I only played chapters 1-3, and chapter 1 is so short it's basically a prologue. I've gotten calls from Margaret, Rachel, and Jeanie (Kyle's mom).

And I forgot to mention I bumped into the ignore feature once: Steve rings Kyle's doorbell and while talking to him the phone rings. He says something with a press prompt, and if you follow up on that conversation you get a game over since it was Margaret calling to demand rent, and Steve tries to hit you up for $1000 while you miss it, something Kyle... reacts negatively to, to say the least. You're supposed to ignore the followup and go answer the phone.

For those curious, someone on GameFAQs has confirmed "That character" from the trailers is indeed in and provided a basic description of his/her role:

Spoiler: "That character"
Yeah, Mila's back. She's attending an art school but gets back in town in Chapter 5 to stay with Rachel for the winter break. She shows up in person in Chapter 6.

Picked it up yesterday at Bic Camera, which was a bad idea as I have to prepare for a presentation tomorrow, but heck, Last Window is addictive! A bit into chapter 4 now, and it's at least as fun as Hotel Dusk.

It's kinda strange to play this game in Japanese though. I understand it perfectly, but probably due to the setting and the great localization we got, I think the game's probably even more enjoyable in English.

For those who want to see it, I recorded the end of Chapter 3 (everything from the confrontation through the quiz.)

;_;!!!!! I. WANT. TO. PLAY.

Oh god. What if we don't get a translation. WHAT IF WE DON'T GET A TRANSLATION.

I don't think I could take that after what happened with Trace Memory. That was such a huge bummer, but it's in English somewhere at least, and I'll just have to shell out a few extra bucks to play it. But if I didn't get a Hotel Dusk translation...

CING I AM GOING TO COME INTO YOUR OFFICES AND OVERTURN EVERY TRASH CAN I SEE IF I DON'T GET A TRANSLATION ;_;!

I know what you mean. Although I'm only understanding half of the dialogue as I play, it feels weird to have a Japanese-speaking cast. Hyde in particular seems a lot more polite and calm compared to his English-speaking counterpart. Of course part of that is probably just his character developing in the past year...even his new portraits have a general air of more...maturity or something.

Anyways, I finished chapter 3 and I'm going to stop myself from going any further. I want Hyde to speak his native language.

Just finished Last Window :3 Great game as expected from Cing. I liked most of the characters here better than the ones in Hotel Dusk: Room 215 and Last Window also flows better compared to Dusk I think, with less of a "I have to make everyone confess about everything. Just because I can!"-feeling. Lots of puzzles, especially the earlier ones, are just re-packaged Cing puzzles though, which you'll instantly recognize if you played Another Code (R) or Dusk :/

Now to read the in-game novel, as it also contains sealed chapters about Hyde's past.

It's good to see that people are enjoying/did enjoy the game. :phoenix:

I have a couple of questions, Ash, if you don't mind?

How often do you need to use the ignore function? Is it used through out the game, or just a couple of times near the start of the game?

How does Kyle behave compared to Hotel Dusk?

How long is Last Window in comparison to Hotel Dusk?

The option is not used too often, but when it's used, it's good :3 They are also spread throughout the game.

Quote:

Probably a combination of being set after Dusk, the Japanese language, and simply because he knows the people at Cape West a bit better (a bit, as he's often away from home for work), but Hyde feels a lot nicer here.

Quote:

Hmm, difficult one, as I played it very irregularly throughout this week and it's been a while since I last played Dusk, but say around the same length. Excluding the novel and replaying the mini-games that also appear in-game.
