May 27, 2007: Capcom President Greenlights Gyakuten Saiban 5 - The only 'official' word we ever get on GS5.
Feb 2, 2008: Siliconera Interview with Capcom's Product Marketing Manager: Colin Ferris - NDA prevents talking about GS5. But promises they’ve got some neat new ideas for it.
March 27, 2008: GS5 Pick Your Prosecutor Contest at CR - Sure it's not actually news, but I still think it's funny that this is the longest on going contest CR has ever had. 15 Months and no end in sight yet.
May 4, 2008: GS5 Production is paused - One year after being green lit, GS5 has stopped being produced due to internal shuffling. According to the source, GS4 was by far the best selling, best rated game in the series. However, the game was unpopular with old fans, so Capcom stopped GS5 to try and make sense of it.
June 30, 2008: Croik at Captivate08 - Without any GS news at the event, Croik has to drill it out of the employees. We learn GS5 was never canceled, was it even started?
June 28, 2009: Interview with 4gamer - Eshiro, the Gyakuten Kenji producer and Omnimusha 2 Director, offered Minae Matsukawa, the Gyakuten Saiban Producer, his help in GS5. Currently no context of when his help was offered.
June 21, 2010: Interview with videogamer.com - When asked about bringing Ace Attorney to the 3DS, Takumi only responded that they'd need to research what they can do with it, and if they can do something, they'll do it.
October 19th, 2010: Level-5 on Gyakuten Saiban 5 - In Level-5's Vision Event, I found this following tidbit: 'Hino: "I didn't think I'd be given the okay. I wonder if it's okay if he doesn't make Ace Attorney 5."' Don't read too deep into this one. He likely means because Takumi is working on Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney, he can't be concentrating on GS5.
January 29th, 2012: At the series 10th Anniversary event we were finally shown off the logo. So yeah... 5 years after the original green light we FINALLY something substantial. Also, the Pick Your Prosecutor Contest is also just shy of being for years old. Croik still has those prizes...

October 19th, 2010: The tweet was confirmed as true, Level-5 and Takumi are collaborating on a Gyakuten game. But had nothing to do with Gyakuten Saiban 5, but rather Professor Layton Vs Ace Attorney

It might be interesting if Eshiro helps with GS5 because Omnimusha is a very different sort of game to what GS is. Of course, it won't mean GS will change completely from what it is but we might see interesting stuff.

Somehow, I am pretty certain that they haven't started to work on the game yet.
And then, you know, if or when the game comes out, it still needs to be translated..

A friend told me that GS5 was going to be the last in the Ace Attorney series. I died a little inside.
I don't mind waiting, really. I'm eternally waiting for good games (Half Life 2 Episode 3, Civilization 5, Deus Ex 3...)

I would be satisfied with that, as long as it
a) Ties up all lose ends
b) Gives us MEANINGFUL appearances by all the missing characters.

Of course, if GS5 goes back to starring Phoenix, that makes things more complicated...
In that case, maybe a wrap-up (and, as has been said, it'd better be a pretty amazingly epic wrap-up!! not that that'll probably be an issue; AA is always epic) would be best.
It is kind of sad to think that the imminent end of the main series seems so likely... but at least the reason for that is that they've got the wonderful GK series to work with now.
It's incredible, looking at that timeline of rumors... I can't believe they've been stringing people along for years...

They could do that, so Nick could be Apollo's aide. I love Nick but want to know more about Apollo (there's an awful lot we don't know) so if GS5 "stars" Phoenix I think it isnt fair on Apollo.

First, there's the current story about the 2Chan GS5 rumor. No surprise.
Then there's a story that I missed when I originally made the thread. Apparently just before Croik's trip to Captivate 08, GS5's internal development was paused. Reasons for the cease given were contradictory: best selling, best rated game, but unpopular with old fans. Someone doesn't have a spine in upper management? Or maybe Takumi wanted a best of both worlds product?
Who knows.

A 3DS GS5 game would be awesome but they'll need to handle it tentatively either making Apollo the protagonist or doing something brand new, new defence attorney and all that jazz.
Though currently the rumours are still so vague I'm holding back my excitement.

So in terms of fandom we are buzzing with anticipation. But that all grinds to a halt when you take things into consideration. for example:
1- GK2 has had NO mention of a western localization despite the great praise and reception that GK1 received and the overall western success of the entire series .
2- The AA movie is no doubt gonna get seen by audiences across the globe thanks to the internet, but unless officially announced were only gonna get poorly translated subs of the movie, or poorly dubbed fan edits. (hoping that there is an official release, even if it is only subbed( even an official english dub would be awesome))
3- The crossover game, (even though definitely possible of a localization) will be quite a wait for us, and its place in the timeline and if it is canon or not is highly debatable, but since phoenix is still an attorney in it we can safely assume that it takes place before the gramarye trial) . Plus we have the problem of the GK2 situation of if it will be localized in the first place.
4- probably at least a 1-2 year wait for until even Japan sees GS5 finished and us even longer. (short but self explanatory)
5- (cannot remember who said it :P sorry) but if this is the end of the main series then we have little to look forward to after these are all released. Following the hypothetical scenario that each series is going to be a trilogy then what does that mean for us?
GS1-3= phoenix trilogy
GS4-5(6?)= apollo trilogy
GK1-2(3?)= Edgeworth trilogy
(Im not counting the cross over because its unlikely that phoenix-layton will get a series of their own)
If we go with this theory then it only means that we only have (GS6- AJ3) and (GK3-AAI3) to be released until all trilogies are complete (At least in Japan), and then the series has to either end or start anew with a whole new set of characters either after the AJ ark (meaning phoenix will be old or not in it at all) or before the time of Mia (to avoid chronological problems.) Thus either erasing or rehashing old plots and characters.
Sorry if i'm being really cynical, but this is the reality if the series is going to follow the pattern of trilogies. BUUUUT as i said this is only a theory, who knows, from events that happen the series could expand further on past issues from either series as well as subtly intergrating new characters into the series who could be the new protagonist.
One plot device that the series could intergrate, similar to GK2, is to have a rival defense attorney whilst retaining the frienemy relationship with the prosecutor.
