Play in Firefox!

This trial contains MAJOR spoilers for Dual Destinies! You've been warned!

(There's also typos. Lots and lots of typos.)

Looks like after just a few short months, I ended up going back on my word. In spite of wanting Curtain to be my last case, an idea had come up in my head that just wouldn't let me rest (quite literally) until it was completed. Well -- now it is. I hereby present The Dragon's Turnabout, a case which I believe is the best work I have produced to date. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I've happened to enjoy making it!

Investigation / Trial / Verdict / Appeal / Sentencing

Premise
Spoiler: Premise
This trial follows the first bad ending of Dual Destinies (which can be viewed here.)

That's... really all I'm willing to say about it without spoiling, I'm afraid.

Ah yes, if it isn't another perfectly normal case with no weird twists whatsoever.

Of course it is. I would totally recommend this case to anyone looking for a case with a simple, straightforward plot like 1-1.

I thought it might be worth giving this a review, if that's ok.

===The Dragon's Turnabout, by Dude with a Mask===
Custom cases are a pretty mixed bag generally. They're often written by a single writer, which can lead to uneven plotting and unless they have artistic talent they have to comb the internet for other people to make the sprites for them, which can lead to mismatches. So it pleases me to see such a well-constructed mystery as 'The Dragon's Turnabout', in pretty much every area, bar one (which I will get to in due course.) It's just a shame that that one thing spoils it for me.

But lets start with the good things, of which there is a plentiful amount. The art assets are, for the most part, very good. We do have the usual issue of people being put together from multiple parts, but pretty much everyone looks distinct enough to be a different character. The only marginal issue is one of the witnesses not reallly fitting in with the art style of the rest of the game, but that was, in the end, one character. The sound is the usual ace attorney and I didn't hear anything that didn't fit. Presentation-wise, the case hangs together well, and that is never guaranteed.

But we come to Ace Attorney for the story, and the story in this one is very good. It's set 2 years after the first bad ending to Dual Destinies, where Simon Blackquill was found guilty and executed, and Aura took Trucy away. Phoenix has been in a bad way, and gets caught up in yet another murder happening when he's in the vicinity. So it's up to Phoenix, Apollo and Athena to save the day, and uncover the truth behind a stolen painting, a locked room mystery and a lot of death. And by a lot of death, I really mean it.

The writing is generally up to par, although it feels like the author wanted to shift it further towards a young adult audience due to its use of frequent mild swearing and other small details. It's not something that bothered me though. The only real faults I could see with the writing quality was some careless use of slang. (I don't generally see Ace Attorney characters go around saying Iunno, for example). The plot though, is a doozy; it's more fair to say it's several plots all crashing together at once, and it ends up working out fine when the dust clears. The locked door mystery is solved with finesse, and the case even tricked me into believing a ludicrous plot development that turned thankfully out to be a red herring.

It really helps that the major villain of the story is more compelling than they first appear. The spritework is very well done, and it was extremely satisfying to take them down. Unfortunately, the plot is also brings me to my major issue, and I can't talk about it without putting it into spoiler tags. This could very easily ruin your enjoyment of the game, so don't say you weren't warned.

Spoiler: Major Spoilers!!!
You know, they nearly got me with that Grossberg thing. I was ready to get out my keyboard and write up an angry review, and thankfully it turned out to be a bluff. Unfortunately, as it turned out it was a double bluff, because the reveal of the other main villain of the piece was just as ridiculous. As best as the author tried (and to be honest, I think that Agatha Christie might have been the only one able to make it work) I cannot take the Judge seriously as a serial-killing mastermind. I just can't. It's asinine, and it goes against everything we know about a fan favourite. It also wasn't neccesary as a twist, as the secret mastermind didn't need to be anyone previously known.

Added to that is the ending twist, which also seemed a bit arbitrary. Turns out the guy you're defending in the second half of the game really did kill the victim that started the whole thig off, oh whoop de do. I'm not sure what the point was of that was.
In the end, I have to balance the myriad of good elements with the elephant in the room (and their smaller, less significant calf), and I feel that on the whole the case is worth playing. It kept me gripped throughout, the court scenes were well thought out and the jokes were reasonably good. Just be warned that you may not be feeling so charitable to the game when it pull the rug out from underneath you.

Oh wow, and here I was almost losing hope that I would get any responses on here!

Spoiler: Spoiler-ish Responses That Include Non-Spoilerish parts in it but I'm too lazy to seperate the two
Firstly, thanks for playing! I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as you did (even if the ending twist did leave a sour taste in your mouth, as I can see).

Yeah, my writing style over the years has generally failed to emulate AA's so at a certain point I just ended up giving up on it. How well this works out generally varies, and after years have passed from the games, I wouldn't be surprised if certain characters felt out of place at times.

I've made a bunch of stuff over the years and I always tend to go into the territory of absurd and crazy. This, of course, may not necessarily be a good excuse for perhaps a poor set up for the final reveal (although, as you yourself say, perhaps nothing could have made it work). The idea from the beginning was something I knew was going to be something that either did or didn't work -- and for a lot of people it did end up being a bit too much, I suppose. But nevertheless, I always tend to go along with it, since hey - why not?

Generally, this was more constructed as a "thriller" that always kept the player on the edge of their seat all the way up until the end (and, I suppose the final reveal about Jupiter was a part of that philosophy).

Overall, thanks for playing! I'm glad it managed to entertain as much as it did (despite, again, the rug-pull)!

HOLD THE PHONE! No refunds!?

I take everything back then. :wellington:

Spoiler:
I can say that from most of the games I've played of yours, the endings ruined the experience for me despite some great or solid moments and overall great use of music.(And this is coming from the guy that hates almost everything Umineko with a passion except some of the music) Dragon was the only one I almost thoroughly enjoyed. The ending was fine until the epilogue.

Don't mind me, just passing through.

This was.... an odd case. It repeatedly kept upping the ante, especially during the last two parts "Appeal" and "Sentencing". And it always felt like it was going out of its way to prove how "dark" it was, especially with Nick acting so detached from everything.

Replace the "aceattorney.sparklin.org" part with "aaonline.fr" and it should work fine.
