Hmm, I've been thinking and pondering over Keygirl's role in the game, and suddenly I was just struck with inspiration!
Granted it's fairly far-fetched, but that's exactly what makes it plausible (AA being a far-fetched game.)
I know early on a lot of people were quick to jump on the KEYGIRL IS MAYA bandwagon, until her revealed age (and more recently her name) dashed that theory.
Or did it?
Throughout the first three games, it's stated that Maya is short and looks "young for her age". Maya was also the inspiration for "The Pink Princess" and seems to be in love with the idea of a secret hero identity. (She even shows disappointment in AA: TT when it is revealed that the fake Phoenix in court did not have a fake Maya with him, as if she is sad about not having an arch-nemesis of her own.) It's also interesting that Maya was 17 when we first met her, perhaps she's regressing back to a time before her sister death and the slippery slope of tragedy began?
Now is it possible, that sometime during the 7 year gap between TT and AJ, Maya left America and followed Edgeworth to Europe, donning the guise of Keygirl so that he wouldn't recognize her, and use the fact that she looks young for her age to hide her identity further? The "ninja-esque" look that Keygirl has seems to fit with Maya's love for Samurai and Ninja shows (all that pink on Keygirl is reminiscent of the Pink Princess too).
That only begs the question: why? Why would Maya follow Edgeworth to Europe and why would she feel the need to disguise herself? Maybe...

Perhaps she had to conceal her identity because Edgeworth would not return her calls as Maya? Is there another reason entirely?
It wouldn't be the first time an AA character disappeared, only to return under a different identity;

This would also explain why we don't see either Maya or Pearl in AJ. Why in the world would Maya NOT remain alongside Nick? Could this be the reason? And why no mention of Pearl, who is the same age as Trucy and would make a wonderful playmate? Unless Pearl's been busy taking over the role as Kurain Master in Maya's abscence! That would wrap up Pearl's story as a branch family member who's unusually powerful spiritual abilities would otherwise be wasted.
Now this is all conjecture on my part and could very well be wrong. Nonetheless, I would like to present some possible evidence.
As for any differences in her eye shape and facial structure, that could also be explained by the upgrade in graphics and the age gap (Though it becomes even more difficult to judge since Keygirl's face is partially concealed). Just look at the difference in Ema. Even her eye color is different, besides her hair and face shape.
Any thoughts? Further evidence? Rebuttals? Questions or comments?

Well, is it Keygirl that names herself a thief or is that just what she's called in the scan? I don't read Japanese so I wouldn't know.
But I do know that it's also said she searches for "truth". That does sound like a rather idealistic/heroic thing to say.
As for not looking like Maya, I personally do see a similarity, but it could just be wishful thinking on my part.

I already explained this in my theory.
It's stated throughout the PW games that Maya looks "young for her age" and that she's short. Maya could pass off as a 17 year old if it so suited her.

Ya know, I'm awfully confused about this. I've heard so many different claims on the timeline, and then the screenshots from passed cases in the trailer only adds to the confusion. But I'll take your word for it and assume it's around T&T. This could still mean that the game begins at the time or ending of T&T and then moves into the events of after T&T. This would fit the "around T&T" scenario.

And Maya may be friends with Edgeworth, but I can't imagine her suddenly "switching sides" to work with him. It doesn't make any sense why she would hide her identity from him, or choose the role of "thief" when she's never shown any affiinity for that profession before. Quite frankly I don't think Maya is that cunning or that devious.
Though most importantly, if the game is "around T&T", which means Maya *should* be in Kurain taking care of the clan. If she skipped out on her duties *again* to go hopping around as Edgeworth's perky sidekick, I'd say her character has taken a turn for the worse. I'm not a big Maya fan but I do think more highly of her than to imagine she'd be that irresponsible after everything that happened in 3-5.

But who says it has to be "switching sides"? Edgeworth's helped Phoenix in court several times without technically "switching sides". (Except for that one time he did 0_0)
Who's to say she didn't go after Edgeworth on behalf of Phoenix? Maybe hoping to get Edgeworth's help after Phoenix was disbarred, (Prosecutors seem to have a an unusual amount of clout in the AA world) but something else got in her way?
Or maybe she didn't go after Edgeworth, but rather just needed a change of scenery after the events of 3-5, and just happens to run into him.

Affinity for the profession of thief? Let's not forget her "stealing" the posters from Russel Berry's office, or her glorification of Mask De*Masque. I think I remember Phoenix even making a snide comment of her pursuing a career as a master criminal. XD Nor did Phoenix ever show an affinity for playing poker or faking at the piano prior to AJ. Or Ema as a detective rather than a forensic scientist for that matter.

But who's to say she simply "skipped out" either?
It's all speculation at this point. She could have very well decided that she didn't or couldn't take on the role of master. She could have, quite responsibly, seen it best to hand the place as Master of Kurain to Pearl, who is hinted at having stronger spiritual powers than Maya. This would be a lovely wrap-up to Pearl's story, after her mother went through so much trying to get her to be Master, going so far as to frame and attempt murder on Maya, and then for Maya to just give Pearl the position. This way Pearl earns it and Maya concedes it, rather than anyone having to get killed over it.
But again, all speculation on my part, and my arguments are no more valid than anyone else's considering I have no REAL proof. I suppose only time will tell! ^_^

Actually I think tht would be rather dark. Morgan wins because Maya's too irresponsible to take up the duty she said she would? If Maya was so easy as to just drop the responsibility onto Pearl, she could have done that at any time. The whole point of Maya's growth through the series was that she goes from avoiding her duties and being a silly teenager to owning up to it at the end. If she just handed it off to Pearl to go adventuring, that would mean Misty died for no reason at all. Do you really think Maya's the kind of person who would do that?

Thats just scary.
Anyway, I see the similarities in the 2 girls, but I just don't see how it is plausable.
Keygirl looks pretty serious, and more of a mysterous figure.
Maya wouldn't just go off like that, and she would end up accediently splurting out her secret.
I could see them maybe meeting or something, but not being the same person.

To just extend things out there more, the art of PreGS4Nick and HoboNick are easily recognizable as the same person from their eyes.
Even from the hair: Maya's hair is sleek, it's not wavy or more free-flowing as Mikumo's. Since this game is only a short period after T&T I'm sure Maya would have need more time to alter her hair like that.

I don't think it's Maya, as much as some people maybe want her to be. ^_^;; Plus, this is going to be Edgey's and Gummy's story.
(Of course, you could argue that AA4 was supposed to be Apollo's story, but still ended up being largely Phoenix's story.)

Maybe she's a cousin of Phoenix? Cousins don't have to have the same last name (the only reason Maya and Pearl are Feys is due to the matriarcy in which they live).
