Post subject:  The official Gyakuten Kenji FAQ and information thread

This thread is for official information released about Gyakuten Kenji. It is not for discussing, but if you have a question, feel free to ask and I'll add it to the FAQ. You can also check the News section on the CR main site.

Q. What is Gyakuten Kenji?

A. Gyakuten Kenji, which means Turnabout Prosecutor, is a new game in development for the NDS staring Miles Edgeworth. It's localized name is Ace Attorney Investigations.

Q. What is the gameplay like?

A. The gameplay centers around three modes: Investigation, Logic, and Confrontation. Investigations will be similar to the original AA games, where you move around the scene and collect evidence. Confrontations have taken the place of cross examination and presumably behave the same way. The big difference is in the Logic Mode, where pieces of information you receive during investigations can be used like evidence, and combined to help solve the murder.

Bits for logic mode can come in the form of actual evidence (such as a murder weapon) or simple facts, or even questions (such as "what was the criminal's motive?"). Combining two of these bits triggers cut scenes that move the story along. If you try to combine the wrong bits, you sustain damage like in court. Take too much damage and you'll get a gameover.

Q. Will there be court phases?

A. No. The "confrontration" phase is meant to make up for this and will operate pretty much just like a cross examination.

Q. Who is working on Kenji?

A. Working on Gyakuten Kenji are Director Takeshi Yamazaki, who joined the GS team around the time it moved to the DS; Producer Motohide Eshiro who has worked on other Capcom projects including two of the DS remakes; and Designer Tatsurou Iwamoto, who did the designs for JFA as well as many pieces of official art.

Q. Which characters have been confirmed?

A.
Returning Characters
Miles Edgeworth
Dick Gumshoe
Franziska von Karma
Maggey Byrde
Wendy Oldbag (cameo?)
Sal Manella (cameo?)
Winston Payne
Mike Meekins
Ema Skye

New Characters
See the character page on the main site
For the rest you can go to the Character page on CR.

Q. When was Gyakuten Kenji relased in Japan?

A. May 28th 2009.

Q. Will Gyakuten Kenji be released overseas?

A. America: Feb 16th, 2010. Europe: Feb 19th, 2010.

Q. How many cases are there?

A. 5.

Q. When does the game take place?

A. A month after 3-5, T&T

Q. Does the Japanese cart have duel language like some of the others?

A. No.

Q. Is there a limited edition set?

A. Yes, you can read up about it on the News Page.

Q. Is there a rom?

A. Yes. Do not ask where to get it, do not post it. CR does not support roms. Just sprite hacking

Has it been confirmed WHEN this game will take place? If so, when? Forever I thought everyone was certain it was between JFA and T&T but now apparently everyone agrees it takes place 'shortly after' T&T.

This confuzzles me. :-(

Ah, good question. So far the only official statement is that it's "around T&T." *adds to FAQ*

Yay! Kenji thread! :edgy:

How exactly will logic mode work? Is it

The piecing together of the jar?

Well, not exactly with rotating and such, but as in moving them all around to try to fit them together and find bits that don't fit?

Thank god, I hope this stops the topics. :acro:

No, I don't think it's like that. They haven't really shown it in action, but I imagine it'll be something like:

Evidence A: The cookie jar is empty!
Evidence B: Gumshoe is eating a cookie!

*FUSHION DANCE*

Evidence C: Gumshoe ate the last cookie!!!!! :sadshoe:

If it makes you feel better, they've replaced the court phases with interrogations/confrontations, which have been said to function almost exactly the same as cross-examinations.

If I may be so bold, I'd like to submit 2 corrections to this statement:

1) The director's name is "Takeshi", not "Tsuyoshi"
2) Mr. Eshiro was the producer on both GS2 DS and GS3 DS before becoming the producer for GK (he is a big fan though, from what he says in interviews ^^; )

I found these two facts from the Japanese GS wiki and the official Japanese GS4 developer's blog.

Y'know that screenshot where it has the close-up of Makoto and Edgy's eyes, like in the cross-examination of GS games? Is that from the investigation, logic, or confrontation phase?

Relevant bump!

Now that we know that Turnabout Airline takes place on a plane and the body is discovered in the elevator, we now have 4 crime scenes shown in art/screenshots. Unless one case has two bodies or one of the artworks is only a concept piece, that would seem to confirm 4 cases.

I'm going to create a topic in a few minutes with a breakdown of all the locations we've seen so far :D

The murder has been established to occur while the plane is in the air. (Look at the windows!)

If this game is supposed to be "sometime around T & T" I highly doubt that he is one of the Gavins. I would like to know who he is though because he does look like a Gavin. Perhaps a relative or something?

Can it really be after 3-5?

Spoiler: AJ
Because from what I heard about AJ, Phoenix got disbarred a few months after 3-5, correct? And I thought that Gumshoe quit the force soon after? Capcom would totally be limiting the amount of GK games...

Spoiler: AJ
Yes, Phoenix was disbarred a few months after 3-5. So? He's not supposed to appear in GK, so that works out fine. As for Gumshoe, we know nothing about his state of affairs in AJ at all. Period. We just don't see him. Perhaps he's not on the force any more, or perhaps he just doesn't handle the cases Apollo works on. There's simply no information.

So yeah, this game definitely takes place after 3-5. It's the most logical place to put a game, Gumshoe's age matches, etc.

Japan doesn't change the name of the franchise to suit the character. Phoenix's games (1-3) were Gyakuten Saiban 1-3 and Apollo Justice was Gyakuten Saiban 4. Gyakuten Saiban means Turnabout Courtroom (or something like that) where as Gyakuten Kenji means Turnabout Prosecutor, because it's not a part of the main series.

When the games get translated to English, THEN they get *Attorney's Name*:Ace Attorney and what have you.

I'm most likely going to look like the fool for asking this...

Is this game on the DS or DSi?

I first thought the former, but I've seen the demo on a DSi backdrop, then the limited edition DSi bundle. I'm a little confused now.

It's a standard DS game. Because Nintendo's jumped ship to the DSi, most promotional material uses it.

What source made this question jump from 90% certain it won't be dual language to absolutley certain?

I'm wholly aware the chance is amazingly unlikely, and I'm not expecting it, but it just doesn't seem fair to write it off like that just because it's the most likely outcome, unless some article was release that I'm not aware of. If anything, the chance of Gyakuten Kenji being dual-language has went up from what it was before, due to the existence of the English trailer.
