Thanks for reading. As always, I don't update very regularly, but I'll probably post some AA3-related columns later this month.

GS3 is probably the most interesting of the trilogy,as by then Takumi was finally perfecting everything (ways to save space, for eg.).

Actually, saving space was was a feat accomplished by everyone *but* Takumi, as he himself writes in his columns. Everyone came up with new ideas throughout the series to decrease data volume, from programmers to the sound engineers and artists. Takumi, by his own confession, was mostly busy with making stories that would need too many assets...

I see it more as Mr. Takumi being a really big dork who writes way too much for his staff to work with sometimes. Iirc, he usually writes the scenarios first without considerig anything else. As a result, there are bound to be things that have to be excluded.

This column is a good example. Takumi was told to bring down the number of characters for AA3 because of restraints for graphical assets. So he made fewer characters, but he also added several versions of the same characters (young/old), so in the end, the number of graphical assets needed would increase anyway.

The updates for this week were:

- An AA1 column where Takumi explains a bit about why he finds writing a scenario extremely (mentally) tiring.
- An AA1 column about what Takumi thinks about advertising for the game. (Interestingly enough, Eshiro and Yamazaki are also often seen fighting about this in interviews about their games).
- An AA2 column where Takumi explains how and why he came up with the Psche Locks.
- The final column Takumi wrote for AA3, where he looks back at three years of working on Ace Attorney.

I have one last update for this year scheduled for later this week.

Question: I started Gyakuten Saiban Library half a year ago. I only get occasionally feedback on it, so I'm wondering whether as a resource site, it's considered interesting enough or that that it's a bit redundant? Because a lot of the little facts of the things I post are mentioned here and there on other sites, either as trivia or for example as summaries of the longer interviews I post.

Hypothetically speaking, If I were to stop with the project, I think I'd remove the site though, as I don't like the idea of keeping it unattended (though obviously, nothing ever really disappears from the internet).

Last updates for this year: Part 1 and Part 2 of Takumi's columns on writing 3-5. The second part in particular is quite interesting, as it explains how he came up with the climax of the case (part 1 is more about the logistics behind how he wrote the story).

Nooo, Ash don't remove it, I still keep it bookmarked as an important reference! unless you'd like to provide me with a copy of your sources I know it's not practical for you to share those, so we (well, at least I do) depend on you for this info, some of which is hard to come by. Many thanks as usual. I admit I don't always have time to read through everything, but I do regularly check by to see what you've collected.

And especially, thanks for covering the Gyakuten Tsuushin interviews and articles. I only translate the 4koma comics since they're quick and easy, though there's plenty on the site I wouldn't mind getting to eventually... but only if time allows.

I was just hypothetically speaking, of course. But it's hard to gauge feedback on GSL itself, hence the question here whether it's seen as a useful resource, even if a lot of the material is old.

It's been a month since the last update, so a quick one today: Takumi's blog on writing The Lost Turnabout (2-1).

As for the plans of this year: I still have a few columns left for the original trilogy, and I also found me two interesting post-trilogy interviews with Takumi for the time being. I'll also do full translation of interviews and other development-related materials of DGS2 when they come (not previews and the likes of that though)

So that's why 2-1 was such a mess-he made it up on the fly. Devil? Sure. Glasses? Why not? Those gloves look like bananas. I guess they'll be the most important thing in this case for some reason. I find it funny to picture that in my head.

Well, if you read the other columns, that's how he comes up with a lot of the stuff for his cases, actually. "Oh, a ******* flew into someone's home, the news says? Let's use that for Gourdy!"

Added two small updates today to GS Library. They don't really reveal anything important, but they are an important step to a major goal of the blog. Translating the original trilogy website columns by Takumi was also a major goal for me, and while I haven't posted the rest yet, I'm now finished with translating all the trilogy columns I wanted to do (I decided to skip columns 1 ~ 6 for AA3 because they take on a different format and a lot of info there is repeated in the later columns for the same game). I'll post the last remaining ones in the following weeks, which gives me time to work on some other (long) interviews.

I might also do the Iwamoto columns for AA3 after that, or at least a selection of them (obviously, he talks about designing and drawing backgrounds and stuff, but also about how life is working on AA and with people like Takumi, Inaba and Mikami).

The updates for this week are: part 1 and part 2 of Takumi's explanation how utterly tight the schedule was for writing the plot and scenarios for Justice for All (GBA), and a bit about his love for whiskey. And there's also an interview with Takumi, Eshiro and Yamazaki taken after the 15th Anniversary event where they talk about fifteen years of Ace Attorney, Yamazaki's ideas on DGS and the future.

Poor Takumi-san. (Working on) Gyakuten Saiban drives him to drink. This must be the real reason why Nick likes grape juice so much.

Column on Reunion, And Turnabout is up. And that means all of Takumi's columns on the individual cases of the original trilogy are now available on GS Library. He wrote a few on Rise from the Ashes, but the contents of those columns are also mentioned in this interview already, so I'm not sure whether I'll translate them or not. He never did any of these in-depth columns for AA4/Layton/DGS, so that was it.

Though I still have updates planned for the site, including the last couple of columns for the first game (about naming characters), and an interview on... BL.

Takumi's old stories are brilliant. Phoenix Wright AU where everyone is dead and you have to solve how they died

By any chance, are those spots he mentioned about Chihiro scattered in Reunion? I seem to recall her speaking in a very polite way at times, but I'm not sure.

Also, by "BL" are we talking about Suekane next time? :D

I think the spots should be in The First Turnabout or perhaps partly in Sisters, as he says it was in the first game in the first episode (Sisters was written first, and errr, First is obviously the first in the game). I don't know whether he corrected the script for the DS release though, as he did go over the script again for the first port.

And no Suekane, but she's like a shadow lurking over the interview.

Two columns where Takumi explains how he named his main cast (part 1 and part 2) were posted today, as well as a column about Takumi's own classroom trial.

And with this, all twenty-five columns Takumi wrote for the original GBA release have been translated. In case you haven't read them yet: they're filled with a lot of information about how Takumi came up with the concept, and how a small team managed, with some trouble along the way, to create a game which would grow out to be one of Capcom's more active IPs. The columns also show a lot of what the other staff members meant for AA: Takumi is the face of Ace Attorney, but there is a lot that actually originates from his staff members.

Thanks a lot, Ash. These columns were a blast to read. The more I read up on Takumi, the more I see him as an "adult" version of Naruhodo-kun.

Does Takumi have a son? I feel it's been long enough for him to have gotten married and had a kid.

What is it with Takumi's initial drafts involving everyone dying? xD

Btw, do you know of any interviews with Sugimori? I've always wondered if he knew about the Cheetahmen II theme and what he thought about it. Inaba too.

I don't think there are many interviews with the man in general, let alone on Ace Attorney. I think he may have done some for Ghost Trick, but there are no sizeable interviews with the main composers for any of the Ace Attorney games, now I think about it.

Started with the AA3 Iwamoto columns. Will only do a couple of them though, but at least they're more interesting than his AAI blog comics.

I never said they were bland. I only said his columns/blogs for AAI are less interesting than those he wrote for AA3, because a lot he talks about in the AAI columns/blogs he had already mentioned in his AA3 columns, or it's just inside jokes about the main team like Yamazaki/Eshiro/Nakamura/etc.

It's been a while since the last update on Gyakuten Saiban Library, but today I posted a translation of the Ace Attorney Investigations series interview with Yamazaki and Eshiro from the 15th Anniversary Gyakuten Saiban Series Encyclopedia 2001-2016, where they talk about a lot of things AAI-related, including the elusive early concept that starred Ema Skye.

There's a certain charm to Capcom's staff and how they always demonize Eshiro and describe Takumi as the irresponsible drunkard. One of these days, even if just in concept art, I'd like to see what Apollo and Athena come up with about their boss after a particularly work-laden day... of office cleaning, of course.

Posted another interview from 15th Anniversary Gyakuten Saiban Series Encyclopedia 2001-2016: this one has the rare match-up of Takumi, Yamazaki and Eshiro, as they talk about their directing styles, favorite episodes, for whom they write their stories and a look at the future.

Also: the SURPRISING reveal of where some of the character names come from. Heh. I guess we really shouldn't look too much behind the real meaning of the names, even behind those that appear to be 'obvious' like Susato and Nayuta!
