Many music genres came and went through the years, but Rock, now especially known as Metal, LIVES ON.

Around here, there are not many people who like metal, especially no girls, so I'm quite the only one around and it's hard. everyone around is listening to this hiphop crap (no insulting, just my opinion) and are laughing at me whenever i put my headphones on oO

but, nevertheless, metal & rock are SUPERIOR.!

though, there are just a few bands that really caught my eye, err, I mean ear.
Some of them are Opeth, Metallica, Korn, Dope..

there's nothing like a great guitar riff, isn't there?

So, what kind of metal do you guys like?

I prefer thrash metal, myself. Like Megadeth (which in my opinion is a much better band than Metallica will ever be), Exodus, Annihilator and Anthrax.

I do enjoy metal. My favorite band would have to be Nightwish (operatic death metal, I think it's been called.) I heard "End of All Hope" for the first time 2 years ago and I instantly became hooked. The lyrics of most of their songs are beautiful (if a bit emo at times) and the music is just epically awesome. I think Nightwish just might be my favorite band ever.

I also like DragonForce. "Through the Fire and the Flames" is fantastic. I like their other songs too, but as somebody else said earlier, almost every single DragonForce song sounds like "Through the Fire and the Flames." So that's really the only song of theirs I listen to regularly, hehe.

2 Interesting bits of trivia:
1. Iron Maiden considers Queen an inspiration and they did a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody.
2. My school has a metal club. I mean sure, it's only a couple people out of 2000 or so, but it's fucking metal. I mean who on this topic does not want to be in a club for metal?

I LOVE METAL. Mostly older metal, though. Not a fan of death metal and the like. MY favorite band is Queensryche; they're a progressive metal band th at was popular in the late 80s. Saw them in concert when I lived in Los Angeles; it was pretty epic.

I LOVE Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, and let's see...Manowar, Motley Crue. I like different kinds of metal; older heavy metal, hair metal, power metal...

MY girlfriend loves Pantera, Metallica, and Slayer, but eh. They're not really my thing.

Damn yes, Queensryche. They're still on my "gotta check them out" list, but the stuff I've heard so far really rocked my socks.
Which album would you recommend for me?

The first one I ever heard was 'Operation: Mindcrime'. It's a 1988 album. NOW...my suggestion is to go out and buy the cd because it's a story album, so a lot of the songs bleed into one another. It's a nifty experience that you'll only got with a hard copy. :edgy:

YESSS~. A metalhead thread!

Metal is the only genre that really pumps me full of energy. I listen to metal all the time--when I'm happy, sad, ecstatic, emotional, whatever!

Favorite bands:

Machinae Supremacy
Slayer
Dream Theater
Dark Moor
Metallica
Megadeth
Racer X
Necrophagist
Pantera
In Flames
Slipknot (sorry, haters, they just create too much beautiful noise)
System of a Down
Helloween
Shadows Fall

I'm slightly eclectic (Though with a strong trend towards Melodeath) when it comes to metal, so I'm not going to list all the genres, just some bands.

Agalloch
Alestorm
Amon Amarth
Amorphis
Arch Enemy
Before the Dawn
Black Sabbath
Callenish Circle
Children of Bodom
Dark Tranquillity
Darkest Hour
Deadlock
Demon Hunter
Dimmu Borgir
Disarmonia Mundi
Dream Theater
Enslaved
Fleshgod Apocalypse
In Flames
Insomnium
Iron Maiden
Kalisia
Katatonia
Killswitch Engage
Lamb of God
Mastadon
Mercenary
Metallica
Mors Principium Est
myGRAIN (Good band, but worst name ever)
Nightrage
Nightwish
Opeth
Rammstein
Riverside
Scar Symmetry
Sigh
Soilwork
Summoning
Symphony X
System of a Down
Trivium
Tyr
Vader

Guilty Pleasures that may or may not be considered Metal:

Disturbed
Linkin Park (Hybrid Theory only)
Slipknot
Tool

Those three are always debatable but I'd at least put Linkin Park and Slipknot under "nu-metal" which however distantly related and not proper metal is still a distant cousin of metal. Tool toes the line at times, but I'd call them Prog Rock over all. Disturbed considers themselves Hard Rock so I'll just go with that.

I'd say Linkin Park is more of an alternative metal or nu-rap-metal. While they're not true metal they're closer to metal than other bands out there like, say, Primus or Queens of the Stone Age.

We are all entitled to our opinion. Like, I like Meteora and I haven't heard Minuets to Midnight. What I have hear though is that they are coming out with another album this year or next year, I can't remember though.

So, has anyone of you checked the new Swallow The Sun (Doom-Metal-/Death-Metal band) album "New Moon" out yet?

I have and it's ace <3 Although the album's title reminds me of that new shitty Twilight movie D:

Ronnie James Dio has been diagnosed with stomach cancer.

Quote:

"Thanks to all the friends and fans from all over the world that have sent well wishes. This has really helped to keep his spirit up."

That sounds great, Nemesis! I have yet to get further into Kataklysm, but the stuff I've heard already is pretty cool.

Also, a band I'd like to recommend: Lost Horizon
They make a mix of progressive and Power Metal. Worth a try!

I learned of a band recently. A very sick thrash band called Lazarus A.D. and if their only studio album The Onslaught had been released this year - instead of merely reissued - it definitely would have found a place among my Top 5 Albums of 2009.

Really, their sound reeks of 1980s Bay Area thrash.
