1. Both of them are the villain in both the first and last case.
2. Both of them had a major connection to the main character.
3. Both of them used poison for at least one of their murders.
4. Both of them had a grudge against a defense attorney other than the main character.
5. Both of them have a facade of kindness and calmness to mask their evil.
6. Both of them have Psyche locks that you never break.
7. Both of them attempt to murder a teenage girl, but fail.
There may be more connections, but that's all I can think of right now.
I also noticed that Athena is basically a combination of characters from the past.
She was greatly traumatized by the death of her same sex parent, like Edgeworth.
She sprinkles foreign dialect into her speech, like Klavier.
A prosecutor set themselves up to take the fall for her, like Ema.
She has a little trinket that allows her to see when people are hiding stuff from her, like both Phoenix and Apollo.
She has a carefree, silly personality, like pretty much every assistant character in the series.
She has a great loyalty to an attorney that she looks up to, like Gumshoe.
Very few of her qualities weren't already done before. I don't hate her as much as some of you guys do, but she's one of the most unoriginal characters, being a combination of different qualities of past characters.

Lang was a teenager while studying law, briefly meeting Badd and Edgeworth during the events of I-4. It's highly likely he ran into Calisto Yew years before she became his partner

To be honest, I'm not sure what I'm looking at here. Done this way, you could claim almost every character is unoriginal, because it's obvious that characters will share common traits with others. That does not make them rip-offs
What matters is who these characters are, not in parts, but as a whole. When you think of it this way, you won't really find any other character like her, because she is unique. Really, can you think of any character who you could say were like Athena? Not in some aspect, but whole character? I really don't think so...
Actually, if anything, for me it would be Trucy being a partial clone of young Ema, but I probably shouldn't mention it, because I don't really want to go proving it...
Even if it really as you say, then it's even better - it goes to show that you can have characters who think similarly, but still feel like different individuals.

She gets angry with Phoenix, just like Lotta
She uses a weapon on a defense attorney, just like Yogi
She's a member of Interpol, like Lang

You see, the reason I put that Athena part there is because I didn't just want to copy and paste the post from the headcanon thread, so I tried to think of something on the fly. I'm not good at improv. I don't actually think of her as an unoriginal character, I just didn't want to be redundant by posting the same thing in 2 different threads, so I just added something. You guys don't have to be so rude. Anyways, one embarrassing thing is that when I first saw fan art of Franziska, it was after I played GS1 but before I played GS2. I didn't realize she was an actual character from the game, I thought she was a rule 63 of Manfred Von Karma.

More seriously, the Court Record works with the data on the evidence, not always the actual things. If anything, for Apollo to include a complete graph of the noodle stand, he'd have run all around the stand to get it from every angle to record it with his recording device, whatever it is.
This is why Apollo is more fit than Nick.
