You may feel differently when you're older. I know some things didn't faze me as a kid, but looking back as an adult, I've expressed my share of WTFs.
As for that picture, what disturbs me most is not the blood, but Athena not grasping the seriousness of her situation.

To be fair she was 11 at the time and was closed out from the rest of the world, so you could understand why as she was still very young and still didn't fully understand how human anatomy worked.
Therefore, she didn't understand that her mother had died and that 'repairing' her with the machine would've done nothing at all.
