I was quite surprised when my brother mentioned a friend of his told him that Manfred von Karma wore earrings. "No, he doesn't," I protested, but my bro told me to check the sprites. He was right. It's all but imperceptible, but there are small single pixel earrings on every single one. For some reason, this absolutely tickles me pink.

Earrings dont reduce MP usage the Golden Hairpin does that. Earrings increase magical power and it increases more if you wear 2.

Given where his daughter is, I think it's safe to assume that von Karma could've lived in Europe at some point (if not come from Europe himself), so his ear being pierced may not be so odd.
Or he could've just done it on a dare in his youth, where his "perfectionism" didn't let him get it removed or something. >_>;

True, though he doesn't really scream "I'm Japanese!" to me. His overall choice in clothes doesn't help, either. Not that it's a bad thing, mind you, as only the Karmas can pull off such a look in this day and age.... (or ten years from now, as the case may be).
