I know what you mean. The seven years really took their toll on him. As Phoenix_Apollo pointed out, his stick swirling has dropped in exuberance as well. That's what going from being a modern-day legend to performing in car parks for no money will do for you. Poor guy.

Actually as depressed as that makes me that could well explain why they changed the sprite. I couldn't quite figure out why they would bother altering such a minor detail, but that explanation makes a lot of sense... poor Valant. Hopefully things will get better for him now.

In the AJ sequel in my brain I like to think Valant does end up helping Trucy somehow; I'm fond of the idea of her asking him because
I never noticed the staff twirl change in the sprites before, thanks to everyone who pointed that out!
Valant is an excellent character. I appreciate the well-roundedness of his quirks and flaws, yet he's incredibly likeable.
I really hope they bring him back in the next game, just too many unanswered questions not to!

Valant's matured now, though. And anyway, I'm not sure he would have framed Zak were it not for the fact that their relationship had become rancid from years of struggling together under Magnifi's thumb.

Not a thing wrong with that. And yeah, he got classier and better with age. Actually, his character improved as well given seven years of ethical hell. The Troupe Gramarye characters are all interesting examples of how people can react to the worst circumstances and how they change over time - for better or worse.

Good breakdown. You've got to wonder what kept Valant so focused and determined to continue magic as his main career. Was he too stubborn to learn anything else? He really seemed to have the drive to keep the magic alive though, as it were.
Anyway, your spoiler is exactly why things get better for him in my head!canon. His story is so not finished, dammit.
And on the topic of magicians, where's my Berry Big Circus Revival? Where's my magical crossover of awesome? In my head!canon. Yeah.Alaka-oh God I spend too much time thinking about this.

Given the way Magnifi was, you probably needed to be completely obsessed with magic to even stand a chance of becoming his apprentice.
Valant has had a nasty time of it, hasn't he? Okay, some of it was his own fault, but most of it originated from circumstances beyond his control. At least his conscience is clear now, though, so hopefully he might be okay.

Valant is indeed a great character - some people before me are right when they state that he has that likeable brand of cocky confidence in himself, despite his ineptitude in comparison to the other Gramaryes.

Valant is alakamazing.
I've been interested in stage magic ever since I was a little girl, so maybe that's what drew me to the Troupe Gramarye. I also love mustaches, so maybe that's why I love Valant more than the rest of them. Maybe it's because I feel sorry for him, too. Poor Valant...he was always playing second fiddle to Zak, who seemed ready to bite the head off of anyone who wasn't named Thalassa Gramarye. Speaking of Thalassa, I ship Valant/Thalassa 100%. I like letting the little man win... *is shot*
