Updated the post.

TIL he appeared in Turnabout Goodbyes

His Japanese name makes a lot more sense. He never looked like a badger to me :ron:

Next update posted. RftA may end up killing me somehow. I'm not sure, but it's long and stuffed with things to peruse.

Edit: The latest "Lesson Episode" and RftA post have been updated again for corrections.

If these latest posts don't get you hungry, I'm going to have to conclude that you've got iron stomachs. I think mine is already caving in like wet paper...

Anyway, next part posted.

Next update posted and working on next one. Also, the next episode of Maya and Pearl's Ace Spirit Medium Investigations will also be coming soon.

Edit: Make that "has come". It's a bit shorter than before, but I enjoyed writing it nonetheless. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Usually, my parents are a pain in the way that they're strict and treat me and my bro with high demands. You know, typical Asian family thing. Other times, though, I'm glad to be a member. We can take discussions about the most mundane things and all it takes is one person to throw out a witty one-liner that turns the entire mood on its head. By these days, it's come down to either me or my dad... but it's still pretty hard to compete with him.

Hmph. So I take my studies of Japanese and integrate it with my studies of Chinese for a dual-purpose study session. Things somehow work out, but not always.

...Maybe it's just an Asian thing.

Akane’s still studying for her English test. For some reason, her test has a word called “Invo”, which I assume to be short for “invocation”, since she follows it with “a detective’s important job”. And then…

Naruhodo: (An unfortunate sort of wordplay…)

…because “invo” is pronounced “inbo-“, which sounds like ‘inbou’, or “plot, conspiracy”.

It's actually a mnemonic -> インボータンテイ重要なシゴト -> インボータン -> important (bold copied from 『逆転裁判蘇る逆転脚本大全』). And yes, it is a lousy mnemonic, which is what Naruhodo comments on (「あまりデキのよくないゴロあわせだな.....」)

Well, the next update is up, and I have finally finished one game... but who cares! I've been waiting to get to some other stuff ever since the first one! I'll get to the next game soon enough. The question now is, where should I begin?

I know I'll be getting into character role language and share a few things about foodstuff and cultural info... oh! And graphics localization, naturally. But I still feel like I'm missing something...

Anyway, guys, which one would you like me to get to first?

Guys, what do I do? I think I'm having flashbacks from past lives or parallel universes! I keep remembering things that seem to have happened before me, but I can never remember when and where they come from.

Either that, or I'm still half-asleep as I work throughout this day. Yeah, I don't get why it happens either.

*cough* It's just a note about one thing for now, but I'll bring in plenty more later.

Sorry I didn't answer your last post but I really didn't have much of a preference :ron: Sorry

As for the label on the tape, are you sure you're not confusing it with the tape from Turnabout Visitor? You can examine the label and find out it's from the KG-8 Incident

So, um, I'm back and so is my blog, sort of, if anyone still cares.

It's about time I get moving with the next game. I promise I won't delay so much when I finish JFA, but maybe I should make irresponsible promises...

You do understand I'll definitely look more critically at these posts than usual, for obvious academic reasons :P

The first thing that came to me however was the memory that although writing my thesis on GS's role language went fairly fast, glossing took ages! And if you have the opportunity, I really recommend Kinsui's 『ヴァーチャル日本語 役割語の謎』, as it is the most important book on Japanese role language! (I had to purchase it, along with other role language books, myself because nobody did anything on role language when I wrote my thesis... and then I started a boom at my university, because I was told the next year the majority of those doing Japanese sociolinguistics were all suddenly analyzing speech patterns from anime/mang/games. So the next year, my faculty library suddenly had all those role language books I had to buy myself....)

I wouldn't say that Odoroki's オレ seems (I'll refrain from using sounds) particularly more childish than Naruhodou's ぼく. If anything, ぼく's appearance seems more childish to me (because children start with hiragana). Of course, I think there's enough material in GS to write a thesis on just eye-role language (against 'theoretical'/'conversational' role language)...

Oh whoa. It's like MLA's citation rules all over again. I hope they don't change as often.

At least you started something awesome. That's one way to be awesome.

Sociolinguistics has never been my strong suit, but at least I'm coming along with it, from an unorthodox angle at least. As much as I'd like to purchase a copy for myself, I don't think I'll be able to pass it off as a school text, and my parents are pretty discerning when it comes to online purchases. Maybe if I find it in a library sometime, I'll give it a look. I'm sure it'd help me immensely. It pains me when I meet with nonstandard Japanese, and I end up looking at, say, armadillos on Wikipedia.

Ironically, I face the same issue when I meet with standard mainland Chinese. I did learn my Chinese from teachers who came from Taiwan, after all, and they sometimes were pretty anal about how characters are supposed to be written or read. Teachers have become a bit more lenient over the years, though. My dad says "la1 ji1" is a stronger sound than "le4 se4", but I wouldn't know. Is it?

I know オレ doesn't seem childish, since guys use it all the time no matter the age, but in his case, Odoroki undoubtedly can come off as an excited little kid when he talks with others. Then again, it's more likely because he pretty much is an overgrown kid.

Hm, on that thought, should I organize and distinguish among eye-role vs theoretical language, or is this good enough as is? I just collect together my thoughts and impressions usually, but I can take it further... but I don't know if it'd draw more people in or drive them away.

Also, could you please take a look at my latest story post? I feel like some of the sentences I've constructed sound a little odd. Thanks in advance.

Well, glossing is a lot more free. There are of course standard abbreviations, but there are often lists of the abbreviations used at the start of a paper/book, in case the writer is using non-standard abbreviations (to fit the purpose/goal of his research). And as for citation, having studied at several faculties at several universities under a lot of supervisors, I can tell you that the most important thing is just to be consistent, and clear with citation, because everyone is doing something slightly different.

Well, 『ヴァーチャル日本語 役割語の謎』 is more about what role language is, and how some role languages came to be, so it is not particularly useful as a reference resource. 『役割語研究の地平』 and 『役割語研究の展開』 (both edited by Kinsui) have more 'practical' research papers, but not all might be as interesting as others. There are to my knowledge no 'role language dictionary'-esque resources, so it's really something you need to get a grip on by getting familiar with all kinds of Japanese languages and cultures, and have a good sense of language. And knowing a bit about Japanese dialects is also useful. I absolute love Japanese sociolinguistics, and it is extremely easy to get into, but it can also be very hard because you need to know much about (formal) linguistics and culture.

Don't ask me.... I only speak a bit of Chinese at home. I am not exaggerating when I say I'm better at Japanese than Chinese. I doubt I can follow a secondary school level course in Cantonese, and I can't even write it. Yet I can follow university level courses in Japanese and am writing like my seventh or eight detective story in Japanese now...

From a sociolinguistic POV, I don't think your example shows the kid - language link very well though. Odoroki talks more casual towards the player, but a lot of that comes from what he says, and not how he says it (basically just 「ね」 as an interactional particle). 「なんというか」 and 「べ、ベツに、どうというコトもないけど」 aren't linguistic markers of his character, I think. Compare to Kyuuta's constant use of just オレ w/o particles every two lines or so: now that seems childish! Of course, it depends on how wide you define role language, but personally, I want to stay clear from (psychological) character analyses and keep the foundation in linguistics.

I guess you'd better ask your readers instead of me; I'm gonna take a guess and say that I'm probably more familiar with the language and sociolinguistics than most of your readers, so personally, I'd love full out academics on this, but that would hardly be any fun to read for most readers ^_~

Thanks, Ash. I've reworded the explanation for Apollo's entry among the CRL discussion. After rereading it, I can see how others can misunderstand what I actually mean to say.

Also, I've finally started with GS2 vs JFA. The first case is done, and I'm moving onto the second.

I will return to the CRL discussion later, since the first case is too short for the satisfaction of my inner writer.

Aaaand I'm back. Finals are over, and while I do have classes coming up soon, summer courses this year will be light. That means, it's about time for artificial language barriers to be smashed open! Stop by tumblr some time! I may just have a new update or two.

Please be patient as I get back into the swing of things. It may not seem like it (or maybe it does), but I spend quite a long time on each post for various reasons, among which is quality checking.

I swear, that dream where I became Pess had to be some sort of sign. When Edgeworth said he'll "take charge" of things, I never would have imagined it in that sense... He's been creeping me out.

Oh, yeah, and all this time, Phoenix was supposed to be in jail. Oops. Well, maybe they can let him out for good behavior, as long as he doesn't try to kill me. (Or I try to kill him...)

1. Does Mei still say "fool" in GS or was it a "close enough" translation for the localization?

2. Is the car from the UK in GS? I thought Japan had the steering wheel on the right, too

1. She likes using every kind of 'baka' except 'bakayaro' because that would be undignified and coarse.

2. It's from the US, and Japan prefers the right-side driver to the left-side ones. It's basically "flipped". (I should probably go add that.)

Thanks for the feedback.

Geez, is anybody still lingering around here, waiting on me? I'm sorry if you are. I did make a new post today, but it's not exactly an update... more like with a second blog for some stuff. Fanfiction-and-sporkings-kind of stuff.

Sometimes, I feel like I have too much to do. *sigh*

Multi-posting again, but I've finally returned to my project and updated with the next case's character profiles. Let's see if I can get back into the swing of things.

Are the animal names the same in the JP version?

Because the animals don't have profiles, their names are mentioned elsewhere. I'll update the list in a bit.

Leon is the same.
Regent -> Ratou, from 'tora' = tiger
Money -> Ruther (pronounced "rusa"), from 'saru' = monkey

Working on the next part.

His real name, Yamada Kouhei, is a very plain and humble name characteristic to the Kansai region, the backwater “South”, so to speak.

I wouldn't say that the name is particularly Kansai-esque (or region-specific) actually, nor would it be completely correct to juxtapose the (stereotypical) image of the Kansai region to that of "the South". If anything, Kansai would evoke money-grubbing industries. The name's rural image is better connected to his speech style (Touhoku dialect), but I guess you'll discuss that in-depth, when you get there.

I haven’t seen it myself, but I hear quite a few good things about it. Perhaps if Ash is still around, he could clarify a bit more…

I'm still there. Here. Both sides. Ahem. Know nothing about the series, except for reading the wikipage just now and taking a look at some online videos, but it might be going a bit too far to calling the series a gag/comedy series with a cop drama style (that's Police Squad!). Tommy and Matsu is just one of those Starsky & Hutch buddy action-comedy series...

Kazumi Ben & Rilo (木住勉 & リロ)

Typo: it's Kizumi. Oh, and an alternative idea about the name: what about living in wood? I.e. his 'real' self lives inside the piece of wood that is Rilo.

Very well. Let us simply refer to him as "country bumpkin" then. And thanks for pointing it out. As I read through Yamada's lines, the ones where he goes full-hicky, sometimes, they don't really sound like Kansai dialect. I wasn't sure which one it was. So it's Touhoku, eh?

Thinking about it, as much as I'd like to discuss character role language, I sometimes have no idea what I'm talking about. I try to check my sources, at least. Time for a little research again...

I see. I'll head back to change it. Wouldn't want any hidden Tommy and Matsu fans barraging my inbox (but admittedly, that would be educating if it happened).

There are many interpretations of Ben's character, and the one you listed is the one I've always gone with. All in all, he's some sort of nutcase... woodcase. But that by no means is a problem. ^_^

Edit: Arrrgh, what is wrong with you tumblr. This may take a moment. Please wait.

Well, it's "fictional" Touhoku dialect, of course.

To break the stereotypes as they appear in fiction up very roughly, it's Kyuushuu = manly men being manly, Kansai = jokesters / gansters / strong-minded / people with an attitude (Kyoto = refined, Okayama=country), Kantou (Tokyo) = cold, educated, businesslike, Touhoku = simple countryfolk. I was sorta reading 『方言コスプレ』 a while back (reminds, I should continue with it), which featured research charting the stereotypical images the many Japanese dialects invoked through quantitative and qualitative questioning.

For abundant use of Touhoku (and other 'country bumpkin' stereotypes) dialect, the (fantastic) drama Trick is the way to go. (or for more 'realistic' usage; the movie Hula Girls was fun)

I'm still busy with the next update. Don't get me wrong; I adore the cast of Turnabout Big Top. But the puns... they are sucking away my life energy (erm, a different kind of life energy, mind you).

Anyway, here's a quickie update for the other blog I mentioned last week. Since I'm pretty lost over my story drafts and being lazy again, I'm hosting an OC contest of my own! Unlike the one on these forums, there's a specific prompt to follow. It's for my fanfiction, see, and as much fun as it'd be to drabble up a few stories with random OC characters, I have a schedule to follow. For those interested, check my blog pages.

@Ash Thanks for the suggestions. If I can spare some time, I'll take a look. Where could I stream them online? Are they on Hulu?

You'd probably have to less legal sources for Trick. It's a pretty popular franchise, so it shouldn't be too hard to find them (I know for sure there are TV rips floating out there as it was broadcast in Hawaii in a faraway past). As for Hula Girls, I am not sure. It was shown at several international festivals, but I don't know if there ever was a home / digital release outside Japan.

This seems like a very interesting topic! Now I understand how hard it must have been for the localization team to translate this games...

Always glad to see more people taking interest. It's always a buttload of work when it comes to text-heavy games. You'd think it's pretty simple to program a game that's more about pressing A or B through box after box, but the more stuffed a game is with text, the more easily mistakes can be overlooked.

And I'm just talking about the text itself, not anything else that localization teams tackle.

It took this fan community several years of collaborative work to make a complete patch of GK2, and it's still a beta patch. These are the hardcore fans who worked on it too.

And the folks on the locale team frequently get hammered by fan criticisms. I don't understand why.

Would an archive/index of sorts be possible for your blog (not sure if that's possible in tumblr)? Because it's kinda a hassle to look for older posts / certain cases now... (-> clicking for eternity on '<- older entries'). It'd also make your blog more accessible for newer readers, I think, as an index/archive quickly shows all the things you have on your blog.

I don't think the theme I use for my blog has an archive/index option available, and implementing one through the html is too much trouble. What I have done here is added another page to collect the tags I use, reorganized some posts' tags, and added a search bar. Just type in the tag itself (no need for the hash mark) and voila! Hopefully, now it won't be too difficult to find that one post you want.

And I just remembered that I haven't posted anything since the end of July. Geez, between my spastic moments of depression and fatigue, I never seem to be in the right mindset to get around to this. I'm stuck in a period of aimless drifting between schools and can't even find a job.

No worries, though. Even if it takes me the next year or two to finish everything, I'll get it done eventually. As for the other project with Maya & co., it'll have to wait. I'm not quite in the mood to write stories for now, so I'll leave the ending of the "field trip episode" to people's imaginations instead. Sorry to those who were expecting more, but I didn't originally intend for it to develop into anything beyond a whim. Maybe I'll eventually get to it again, but I have too many things to do already.

I'll check up on my second blog to see if it's actually available for people to submit stuff there.

Edit: Apparently not. No wonder there's no activity at all. Well, no matter. It'd be a better idea to post a question or prompt on a forum like this one anyway.

I was wondering about Apollo's catchphrase "I'm fine" in the Japanese versions of the game.

Is his line a direct translation, something along the lines of 大丈夫 です! (Daijōbu desu! or Daijōbu!) or is it less literal of an expression?

Thanks. :apollo:

It is exactly that, with the 'desu'. It's why it's in the name of his theme. It's also long been a fan favorite nickname for him: "Daijōbu-kun". Oddly enough, I don't hear "Mr. Fine" being used as often around these parts. I wonder why.
