Smash Bros Brawl is coming this weekend, and so is the Gamestop Brawl tournament!

It will be split into 4 rounds with the winners from each round moving on to the end. Each round will be one week apart.

This was my thought, if we can get all the people from Court-Records who plan on being in the tournament to train we will have a better chance of having someone from here winning.
This is where you CRians come in! I want to put a team together who are willing to help each other train the round one (and on) winners once Brawl comes out.
I figure now is a good time to start.

So far the official team and each person's Brawl friend code is:
  • Donald Serrot/ 5284-1082-2629
  • R_Bond/ 2105-8311-0216
  • winged cloud/ 3265 4722 1704
  • Poltergust/ 4768-7108-3039
  • Escargotage/ 1976-9839-9167
  • Immortal FeatherLLS/ 1117-9879-9236
  • Bleachlover/ 4038-5695-0903
  • Samus Wright/ 0258-9956-0120
  • Blademaster_Orca/ 4511-0149-4156

If you are interested please post here. Don't worry about Wii codes yet. We'll get there when we get there.

Round one: March 9th
Round two: March 15th
Round three: March 29th
Round four: April 12th

Spoiler: SUPER SMASH BROS. BRAWL TOURNAMENT OFFICIAL RULES
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO PLAY OR WIN.

THE 2008 SUPER SMASH BROS. BRAWL TOURNAMENT (“CONTEST”) IS OPEN TO LEGAL RESIDENTS OF THE 50 UNITED STATES AND DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA WHO ARE 13 YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED.

ELIGIBILITY:

Employees of GameStop, Inc. ("Sponsor"), Nintendo and their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, parents, representatives, advertising, promotion and publicity agencies ("Sponsor and its agents") and the immediate family members and persons living in the same household of each are not eligible to play or win. Void where prohibited, restricted or taxed by law. All federal, state and local and regulations applies.

This 2008 Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament (“Tournament”) consists of four (4) rounds of competition.

The onsite GameStop Tournament Director (“GTD”) will present play instructions, any mandatory game play settings, and Game Controller directions during the introduction prior to commencement of each Round. Participating entrants (referred herein as “Contestant") are responsible for understanding the Game Controllers and instructions. All Contestants must check-in with the onsite GTD at least thirty (30) minutes prior to the start of play. Contestants who are not checked-in at least thirty (30) minutes prior to play may be eliminated from the Tournament in the GTD’s sole discretion. Pairing of Contestants is at the sole discretion of the GTD. The GTD will signal to initiate all play. Regardless of the Round, Contestants must use Game Controllers provided at the participating GameStop location or Tournament location. A Contestant cannot use his or her own Game Controllers. In each Round, each contestant will have limited time to eliminate his/her opponent (refer to each Round for time limitations).

The Sponsor, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to disqualify any Contestant who violates these Official Rules. By entering, all Contestants accept and agree to abide by the terms of these Official Rules, the decisions of the Sponsor and/or GTD and to be contacted by Sponsor or its agents by email, mail and/or telephone regarding this Contest.

HOW TO QUALIFY FOR ROUND 1:

To enter Round 1 of the Tournament, visit a participating GameStop location on March 8, 2008. To obtain the address of the participating locations nearest to you, visit http://www.gamestop.com/smash. All Contestants must check-in with the onsite GTD at least thirty (30) minutes prior to the start of play. Contestants who are not checked-in at least thirty (30) minutes prior to play may be eliminated from the Contest in the GTD’s sole discretion. On the day of Round 1, complete an official participation form, or if you are a minor (defined as under 19 years of age in Alabama and Nebraska, under 21 in Mississippi and under 18 years of age in all other states and the District of Columbia), a parent or legal guardian will be required to complete and sign the official form. After the form is signed, give the official form to the GameStop tournament representative who will call your name when it is your time to compete in Round 1. When your name is called, you will be given one (1) opportunity to compete against another Contestant at that location. Each Round 1 Contestant will be paired with another Round 1 Contestant in a one (1) minute match until one (1) Contestant is eliminated. The winner of each Round 1 match will then compete against another winner until only one (1) Round 1 Contestant has survived the elimination matches. The surviving Round 1 winner at each participating GameStop location will be declared the District Winner and will have the opportunity to compete in Round 2 of the Tournament.

All Store Winners will be determined on March 8, 2008 and will be responsible for getting to the one of 274 District locations where Round 2 of the Tournament will take place. If you are a minor, please consult with your parent or legal guardian before traveling to the location for Round 2. GameStop, Inc. (the “Sponsor”) is not responsible for any expense the winner or his/her parent (or legal guardian) incurs while traveling to the location of Round 2. The Sponsor will not reimburse any travel expenses to a Store Winner or his or her parent (or legal guardian).

HOW TO QUALIFY FOR ROUND 2:

Round 2 will be conducted on or about March 15, 2008. In Round 2 all Store Winners (or parent or legal guardian if Store Winner is a minor) will be required to present his or her certificate of winning Round 1 and to read and sign a Release of Liability before competing. Failure to execute and submit the Release will automatically disqualify a Store Winner from participating in Round 2.

After the Release is read and signed, return it to the GameStop Tournament Director (“GTD”) who will call your name when it is your time to compete in Round 2. When your name is called, you will be given one (1) opportunity to compete against another Store Winner. Each Round 2 Store Winner will be paired with another Store Winner for a three (3) minute match until one Contestant is eliminated. The winner of each Round 2 match will then compete against another Store Winner until only one (1) Store Winner has survived the elimination matches for that District and will be declared a District Winner and will have the opportunity to compete in Round 3 of the Contest.

All District Winners will be determined on March 15, 2008 and will be responsible for getting to the GameStop Store location where Round 3 of the Contest will take place. If you are a minor, please consult with your parent or legal guardian before traveling to the location for Round 3. The Sponsor is not responsible for any expense the winner or his/her parent (or legal guardian) incurs while traveling to the location of Round 3. The Sponsor will not reimburse any travel expenses to a District Winner or his or her parent (or legal guardian).

HOW TO QUALIFY FOR ROUND 3:

Round 3 will be conducted on or about March 29, 2008. In Round 3 of the Contest, all District Winners will be given one (1) opportunity to compete against another District Winner (as determined by the Sponsor) until one Contestant is eliminated per match. Each District Winner will compete against another District Winner for a five (5) minute match until only one (1) Contestant has survived the elimination rounds. The top eight (8) scoring District Winners will be declared the Semifinalists for that region and will have the opportunity to compete in Round 4 of the Contest.

All Semifinalists will be determined on or about March 31, 2008. Approximately 8 Semifinalists will advance to Round 4 of the Contest which will be held on April 12, 2008 at GameStop, 3600-A Stevens Creek Blvd, San Jose, CA, 95117. Semifinalists will be required to travel on specified dates as determined by Sponsor and will be required to present a valid photo ID (or any legal document if necessary) to compete in Round 4.
Trip includes: round-trip coach-class airfare for winner only (unless winner is a minor) from a major commercial airport nearest winner’s primary residence (to be determined by Sponsor) or ground transportation if winner resides within 100 miles radius of Event City, hotel accommodations for one (1) night (one room, single or double occupancy), and $200.00 spending money, which will be awarded in the form of a check. All meals, ground transportation (other than as noted), taxes (including but not limited to federal and state, income and sales tax), gratuities, incidentals, service charges, upgrades or other expenses not specified herein are not included and are the Semifinalist sole responsibility. If the Round 4 is cancelled or postponed for any reason, awarding of the remaining elements of Semifinalist trip shall constitute full satisfaction of Sponsor’s prize obligation and no substitute or additional compensation will be awarded. All travel arrangements will be made by Sponsor or its designated agent. No travel date substitutions allowed. If a Semifinalist is unable to travel on dates specified by Sponsor, prize will be forfeited and the player who was eliminated last prior to the Semifinalist prize winner may be declared the alternate winner, provided there is sufficient time to verify alternate winner and make travel arrangement, otherwise such Semifinalist prize will not be awarded. If, for any reason whatsoever, the Semifinalist cannot travel after all travel arrangements are made and paid, then the Sponsor shall have no further obligation to the Semifinalist. Travel and accommodations are subject to change and availability and restrictions may apply.

ROUND 4:

In Round 4 of the Contest, all eight (8) Semifinalists will be given two (2) opportunities to compete against another Semifinalist, as determined by the Sponsor, in a five (5) minute match. The top two (2) scoring Semifinalists (after double elimination rounds) will be declared the Finalists. The 2 Finalist with the best of three rounds score in Round 4 (subject to verification) will be declared the Grand Prize Winner of the 2008 Super Smash Brothers Brawl Final Tournament. The Finalist with the second highest score in Round 4 (subject to verification) will be declared the Second Prize Winner.

TIES:

In case of a tie in Rounds 1, 2, and 4, the tied contestants will have a rematch to determine the winner. In case of a tie in Round 3, the winner will be determined based on the contestant that received the less falls overall. In case of a further tie, the winner will be determined based on the contestant that has the least amount of self-destructs overall.

SCORING/TRACKING:

All scores will be tracked by the Super Smash Bros. Brawl Software automated tournament bracket mode (Tourney Mode) will be deemed the official score for all purposes.

And this time change could mean trouble for me. If it had been 10:00 like it was before I wouldn't have much trouble... but 12:01AM! :larry:
I'll be going near my Gamestop tomorrow so I'll check with them about the time.

My sleep cycle is borderline nocturnal, so fighting in the preliminaries will be cake. I will, of course, be playing as Luigi.

Sign me up, Mr. Serrot!

If you guys have any questions about this tournament, I'd be glad to answer with what I know. I'm only a lowly grunt worker at Gamestop, but I do have some information.

The tournaments will be played using Brawl, not Melee, which presents a few problems for some people. Most notably, unlockable characters may not be available.
Spoiler: Unlockable characters
This affects Captain Falcon, Falco, Ganadorf, Jigglypuff, Luigi, Marth, Mr. Game and Watch, and Ness players. The other unlockable characters weren't in Melee, so I'm assuming not many people would use them as their main unless they imported Brawl.

I'm not sure what they'll be doing about unlockable characters though. Gamestop had to get a special agreement with Nintendo to host the tournament a few hours before the street date, but I don't think they'll allow employees to take a copy home and unlock everything (plus it takes forever to unlock some of them). Either Nintendo is sending a special tournament-modded memory chip to every store, or players will just have to pick someone else, and the first option is rather unlikely.

Here's a short version of the rules:
1.) If you are a minor (definition varies by state), you must have a parent/guardian sign in for you.
2.) 1v1 brawls on Battlefield (the three platforms stage) for 1 minute, single elimination.
3.) The game's Tournament mode will be used.
4.) You must use the controllers provided.

Dammit, since I work for Gamestop I can't join the Tournament, but I'll still represent us with pride since I'll be up there managing it. Like I said to Donald, I'll train with anyone who makes it past the first round!

All stores should be getting a plain copy of Brawl, if a character gets unlocked it's unlocked.

What time does the tournament start at your store?

I am pretty pumped for this tournament and I will probably train the old fashioned way, playing melee since I haven't played brawl yet.

Guess I should've checked my e-mail. :meekins:

The tournament starts March 8th at 10 pm, and that's for all stores participating in the tournament. I wonder how the line system is going to work if half the line is participating in the tournament.

Maybe Gwiffen or Rufus can answer this. Do you know what controllers we'll be supplied? Will it be Wiimote-only, or will there be Gamecube controllers available?

Wiimote Nunchuck ONLY, those were the rules they sent us. I know, it sucks.

10pm. . .that's going to be weird, the little kiddies getting this game my have to wait until Sunday before they can get pick it up. With the tournament lasting only 1 minute a round I'm wondering if my store is going to kick people out after the tourny and ask them to come back in a few hours to pick up the game. . .@_@

Guess I'll call today and let you all know.

Id do it if there weren't tourneyfags who have to play in final destination and wavedash non-stop. If this tournament doesn't have those, sure I'll join.

I'll be Ness....or Lucas. Never lost a match with them :keiko:
I remember when CR was cool and Croik was the only one in charge.

I also remember when we used to have respectable members. :(

Yeah, except wavedashing isn't in Brawl - no glitches of the like have been found yet. So if you're beaten, it's just (mostly) skill.

First, on an official note about my "Allegiance", it's GU-Bangor, of course (have to represent the hometown game shop and everything.), but I will be participating as if I were with you guys. If I manage to get through prelims, the second round will probably also be in Bangor. If that's the case, it will probably be in a slightly more secluded area. However, I think round 2 will be set in Portland or worse... Boston...

If i have to go to Portland (Several hr. drive) or Boston (Several more hr. drive), I might not be able to make it. I will do my best to, but even though I am of legal age to attain my license, I haven't gotten through the whole "Driving School" thing...

Then again, even if i do make it through Round 2 (which would be a miracle and a half), the next logical step is either Boston, Washington D.C., or New York City. If it's Washington or New York, I'm done. If it's Boston again, I MIGHT get lucky again, but there's still a snowflake's chance I'll get this far.

Finally, Round 4 is all-expenses paid, meaning that part of the tournament will be a breeze to get to. As for winning, I don't have that much confidence in my abilities at this point in time because

1. Any of my opponents from rounds 1-4 could have picked up the Japanese version of Brawl and learned how to use the Wii remote and Nunchuck long before the tournament was announced.

2. I have an unconscious fear of winning in official tournament events. I know it sounds stupid, but if I sense any amount of stress from my opponent, I freeze up like an Elk in front of a van. You see, I am a pacifist and I do my best not to cause conflict with people I have never met or have only met recently. This could easily hinder my chances in that fashion.

3. I'm playing Luigi. First off, I have never played a sidescrolling fighter with the Wii remote and Nunchuck in my life. I mean, fighters, yes. One Piece: Unlimited Adventure, Bleach: Shattered Blade, etc. Not only that, but I play Luigi in a way that a lot of people who have played against me in the past as well as anyone who has ever seen me play consider as "reckless". You see, I use Green Rocket. A Lot. When fighting against enemies who have a high skill level, I do relatively well until I start using Green Rocket impulsively. i usually use Luigi Cyclone. The thing with that attack in Melee is, when you start up Luigi Cyclone and then push the Analog Stick left or right, depending on how soon I do it without doing it too soon, I will use Luigi Cyclone while moving in the pressed direction. The quicker you do this, the faster you go in some cases. It also attacks everyone in your path, which is also convenient. i use it as a surprise to anyone who has never played against me or against those who seem to forget at a moment's notice. Third, I am not an avid user of Super Jump Punch. It requires a lot of preparation or sheer luck to get it just right and I hardly ever use it except as a recovery. Finally, I use fireball to counter unavoidable projectile attacks. Not the most effective means, as they both fizzle out at the same time, but it's a temporary shield. I sometimes fire one off to interrupt recoveries, but it almost never works. Rarely, it does work, though.

4. I don't feel that I would get the chance to enter the next round anyway due to travel, so I really don't try as hard as I would with an attainable goal. For example, winning a single, local tournament in my hometown? I can feel comfortable with putting effort into it. However, a 4-string tournament with locations for rounds after prelims in gradually farther away places, there's no point. Even if I win the prelims, who'll take me to the second round? Who'll take me to the third round if I win there? In the fourth and final round, what will I do? I'm not used to live in major cities, I've never left the State of Maine and the closest thing to a major city is my hometown. Not only that, but Maine is one of the highest-ranked states in terms of being a crime-free area (3/50 to be exact).

Here's a clip of our news to compare with any news programs that you get wherever you are:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4oJWjejBso

Two years ago, but take my word for it, that is it. It repeats every 4-5 hours every day, usually repeating the same news from earlier unless they actually get breaking news, which usually isn't any worse than "cat up in a tree" level news. Though there is a single murder story maybe five to six times a year.

I heard from my mother, who has apparently been outside the state where every day they run the news 2 hours at least with just local murder and criminal activities. I don't know if it's true or not, but you can see why i am a little shaken up about the tournaments being in major cities...

Anyway, apart from all that on my shoulders, I hope to do my best for my local game shop and for Court Records!

NOTE: I just looked at all the stuff I posted just now. Man am I whiny?

EDIT: I just thought of something to add. Due to my upbringing in this state, you probably don't understand exactly what I think about when I think about visiting a major city like New York or Washington.

You probably see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLMYIlLGBjs

I see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckvDo2JHB7o

Sure, not to that EXTENT, but it's pretty close.

...no wavedashing in brawl...? HURRAH! :keiko:
Now I'll be winning non-stop. The only time Ive been beaten was in melee due to wavefags
I remember when CR was cool and Croik was the only one in charge.

I also remember when we used to have respectable members. :(

I've never seen anyone wavedash yet, I've only heard about it.
I'm training with all the players because I thought I heard somewhere that you have to use random select for your character.

And there is a list of where each round's locations are on the gamestop website. (Link in first post.)

It's all in the first post. Those are the people who are willing to help the people who make it into the tournament train via WiFi.

What time does the tournament start at your store?

9:30. About three other stores are sending their participants to mine so we'll be expecting a rather large turnout. We were even thinking about setting up another Wii so we could run two battles at once.

Hakuro: Relax. :) Big cities aren't nearly as bad as they're perceived. Most of the crimes happen in the sketchy sectors of cities, not in the business districts. Plus, if you've been playing PW, you'd know that any would-be assailants would need a motive, so unless you beat down a spoiled gangster's son in Brawl or something, no one has any reason to bother with you.

As for Luigi, yeah, you may have some trouble playing him since he's unlockable. The controls shouldn't be too difficult to adjust to though. I played a friend's Japanese Brawl, and the controls were essentially the same. You just have to remember that the B button is under the Wiimote so you don't try to shield using your right index finger but throw a fireball instead.

Thank you everyone who works at a Gamestop for the extra info! 8D
I plan on trying to stick with the Wiimote controls for all my matches tournament, training, or other.

Signed up at my Gamestop today. :redd:

After reading the rules again, I noticed that they'll be using Brawl's Tournament Mode for the tournament. I guess that makes sense. :yogi:

They let you sign up? Mine said they probably weren't going to start sign ups until around 9:30pm on Saturday! D8
And they confirmed that it will be at 10:00pm Saturday at mine.

Yep. I was the 32 person to do so at my store, I believe.

You know, maybe I should've bought the strategy guide after all. I might've been able to learn a few tricks before the tournament. :sadshoe:

"It will take hours of strenuous off screen training"
"What? You mean I don't get a training montage?"
"Who do you think you are, Rocky Balboa?"[/YGO:TASrefference]

If everyone sends me their Wii code I'll update the first post to include them.

Well, this isn't the tournament, just a training team. I wasn't sure if that is what you were thinking.

I know that! I guess I worded it wrongly...

I meant that I will sign up for the tournament tomorrow (it's today, actually) and hope that I can get in, pass the first round, and train with you guys.

WIN THAT TV!!

If I do somehow manage to be able to participate by chance that someone does not come, then I still have a chance.
Don't mind me, just passing through.

Doesn't Wii have a universal friend code across all games?
