This summer at the AniMagiC (Bonn, GER) I want to cosplay Phoenix - the suit is no problem also the hair, but I also want to make the badge.

So which material would be the best: polystyrene, copper or something else?

Get some thin copper and bend it! It will probably work, if not then cards and gold paint!

Use polymer clay, for ease of creation as well as making it realistically shaped.
The pin is gold, but I doubt you want to use actual gold. You can always spraypaint the badge with a metallic spraypaint when you finish.

What you want to do is embed an actual pin (with pin back) into the clay, so that you can wear the badge as an actual badge.

Here's a picture of one of the ones I made for our cosplay group, pre-spraypaint:

Here's a picture of our Phoenix and Mia wearing them:

Remember, the size and detailing is important.

Me again - now I have the clay - are there any good screen shots of the badge from GS4? Because I need a good 3D model.

I know - but it was hard to work with fimo - and when it is harden it stays so. Ergo: the badge is now and will be oval.

Hrm, I could probably come up with more ideas if I'd just recently been through a crafts supply store, but an option I don't think anyone's suggested yet would be using a modified soap mold.

I know you can get these soapmaking kits at Michael's or Joann's, and the badge could probably be done with a flower-shaped mold that could be modified to taste with a little work. Heck, then you could cast the badge using hot glue or something.

Hmm...are you still looking for advice on the badge?

Did you use a round shape to cut out the fimo? Anything tube-like can work as a cookie cutter. Embed the pin in a flat layer of fimo, then cut it out with the circle cutter, then carve lines into it. What I'd suggest from looking at the image of the pin you have is to give it more lines, and to make sure the lines aren't going so deep that it changes the round outline of the badge. It's very good for a first attempt, though. ^_^

I just made one recently again for a future cosplay, and here is a clearer picture:

I used a round bject but the fimo was pinned in it and every time I tried to remove it - the circle was destroyed --- that was the best I was able to do... (btw: my badge has got a diameter of 2,5 cm)

How I overcame the fimo sticking to the cutter is by blowing it out-- the cutter I used was a tube, conveniently. :lana:
There's still some irregularity to the shape after that, but it can be smoothed out before proceeding with pressing in the lines.
