Ok so we are reading the Merchant of Venice in school and I thought it would be cool if I did like the Phoenix Wright characters as the characters in the play as a fanfic/fanart kinda thing. Right now though, I'm having trouble with the casting and I thought I could just ask some of you guys on your opinions. (It would be helpful if you've read the play lol)

Well I know most definetly that and will be Antonio and Bassanio but I'm not sure which one should be which. At first I thought Phoenix would make a good Antonio because he would always help Edgeworth with no questions asked. For another thing Phoenix has a lot of faith put into Edgeworth throughout the games and they have a very close bond.
But you see, I'm making Shylock. (Obvious reasons) Shylock wants to get revenge on Antonio and although von Karma would love I'm sure to kill Phoenix, he holds a much greater grudge against Edgeworth. But on the other hand von Karma took Edgeworth in and it's made clear that Skylock and Antonio never were and never will be any sort of companions.
But my big kicker for Edgeworth being Antonio is that I could never imagine him going anywhere to find a girl, woo her and get her to marry her. That seems more like Phoenix's thing.

I'm also having trouble with the female characters. Portia is supposed to be beautiful, smart and clever. I thought maybe but really, Maya is just a little bit too immature. So right now I'm deciding between and . For Nerissa I'm thinking maybe she just seems to fit the part to me. I was also thinking could be Portia but she would be better for Jessica because she actually is Shylock's/ daughter. I'm not sure who to make Lorenzo yet.

And the last people I'm having trouble with are Gratiano and Lancelet Gobbo. Our friend here is fit for both these characters but I'm not sure which one he should be. Gratiano talks a whole lot about nothing and Larry definetly fits that bill. Lancelet though, is the comic relief of the play and is always there making trouble and who else but Larry to do that? If I do decide to make Larry, Lancelet, then will be playing Gratiano. Although Gumshoe isn't as big of a talker as Larry, he still tends to get off topic.

So what do you think?

Casting conundrums, eh?
First, I think Nick should be Antonio. You've given so many reasons why Nick should be Ant, but the only reason against it is:

Doesn't seem like a solid contradiction to me. Nick is Antonio if I were casting. I'm not, so your call, but I'm using your testimony here, so it seems like you might want it that way to.

Beautiful, smart and clever? Didn't you just describe Mia? The Genius Defense Guru who happens to be hot? I'm gonna have to pick Mia as Portia. If it were my call, of course.

Larry is more comic relief then babbler, to be honest, so [b]I'd[/i] place him as Lancelet. I guess Gumshoe could fit the Gratiano bill, but there are other characters to choose from. Moe, Kudo, maybe even Oldbag. But I guess they're pretty minor, and you wouldn't wanna put one of them in over Gumshoe or someone else like that.

Also, if we're making this Phoenix Wright-ey, we could change a few lines to more reflect the new character, if we wanted to...

Yeah I think you're right on most of it. I chose Phoenix as Antonio at first but then I started having second thoughts and wanted to get some other opinion on it.

Mia would make a really good Portia but since I'm surrounded by Mia haters, they sort of sprouted some doubt in my mind.

I always wanted to make Larry Lancelet but then when Gratiano's character came up on my list I just couldn't decide. I'm still not sure about him we could make him old for Kudo or Oldbag's sake but who knows?

Although one I forgot to add even though he was faking it, would make a good Old Gobbo don't you think?
