Phoenix had known Larry a very long time, for almost all of his childhood and though they had drifted apart as adults, somehow Larry could creep back in his life at the most unexpected of times. Or rather at the most troublesome moments because with Larry there was always some degree of trouble.
Yet a wedding... that was not something Phoenix had come to expect from Larry. No, the places Larry tended to fit around were hotdog stalls where mythological monsters were born; the secret hideouts of elusive thieves; or up in the mountains where the dead could be seen flying. On paper a wedding certainly sounded like less trouble.
Maya and Phoenix were for a moment both silent as they tried to connect this invitation to the man they knew. As they were thinking, the ever familiar steel samurai theme song began playing. Maya looked instinctively towards the television, expecting an episode to flash on the screen, but Phoenix drew out his phone and hit the answer button.
"Hello? Wright & Co. Law Offices."
"Wright. It's me." An abrupt voice answered him, Phoenix recognized it instantly.
"H-Hey Edgeworth."
It had been a long time since Phoenix had talked to Miles Edgeworth, they hadn't met in court and Edgeworth wasn't one for catching up over coffee.
"You probably know why I'm calling," Edgeworth said.
"Erm," Phoenix could feel his face turning blank. He looked down, for a strange moment he felt he was back in court and his hands grasped for the court record. All that was in his hands, however, was the wedding invitation and with that realization came to him.
"You're invited too, Edgeworth?"
"Why the tone of surprise? As much as it pains me I admit to being at least an acquaintance of Larry's, it's only natural that I should be a guest at his... wedding." Edgeworth said, and with that slight pause Phoenix could tell, despite his calm manner, that Edgeworth was having a difficult time with the idea as well.
"So I take it you're going then?"
"Naturally. It's a long drive so I was planning on leaving this afternoon. What are your travel plans? I assume Maya will be going with you."
"Oh well, I hadn't really thought about it. I kind of only just noticed the invitation now," Phoenix cleared his throat aware of how stupid he sounded. "But, er, I suppose we'll get the train."
"Hmph. There's no need. I can drive you myself, if you wish."
For a moment Phoenix wasn't sure he'd heard Edgeworth correctly. It sounded as though Edgeworth was offering him a ride, a ride in his expensive, flashy, red sports car. But of course Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth wouldn't let the two of them near his car, not unless it was part of a crime scene or Gumshoe needed supervision polishing it.
"Erm, are you sure about this?" Phoenix asked.
"There will of course be a no hamburger rule."
Ah...I think I'll let Edgeworth tell that one to Maya himself. Phoenix thought.
"Okay, that'd be great Edgeworth!" Phoenix said.
"Very well. I'll be over at three o'clock then."
"Sure, we'll be ready." Edgeworth had already hung up by then, Phoenix got the feeling that perhaps the phone call had been a difficult one for him to make.
"Hey Nick was that Edgeworth just now?" Maya had disappeared into the kitchen while he'd been on the phone and returned with a hamburger.
"Yeah he's taking us up to the wedding this afternoon."
"For real? Did you two become friends while I was away?"
"Ah, come on Maya. Edgeworth is a little cold sometimes, but you know his glare it's definitely more friendly these days."
Maya laughed, she put the hamburger down on top of some old case files and sat behind the desk.
"You know I was thinking. It's kind of strange don't you think that you don't have a car of your own. You always take the train when you visit me. Edgeworth's your age and he drives to work in style."
"Well, it's not that weird. I just don't have a driver's license." And my clients never pay me.
Maya gave him a pitying look.
"Hey! I have a license to defend in court and that's all I need." Phoenix jabbed a finger at his attorney badge.
"I guess, hmm, I wonder whether you can get a spirit medium license?"
"Erm, no Maya I don't think those exist."
"If they did I'd get a really shiny badge and present it to everyone I see, dead or alive."
Phoenix and Maya got into a debate about what the badge would look like, whether it would have a magatama symbol or Maya liked the idea of a cool sword like the shichishito.
By the time three o'clock rolled by, Maya and Phoenix had eaten all the burgers to hand and Phoenix had been forced to watch the lunch-time special of Jammin' Ninja meets the Sprightly Knight. It... had not been good.
Edgeworth was waiting down by his car and Maya instantly called for shotgun. The drive took four hours and Phoenix wasn't really sure what to make of it. Edgeworth caught them up with the details, he apparently had investigated the invitation thoroughly assuming it to be a hoax. But Kimi Darnell was a real person and the Church they were going to had the couple on its registry list.
After that the radio saved them from any awkward silences and they listened to a rock band Phoenix hadn't heard of before. Neither had Maya, but surprisingly Edgeworth knew all about The Gavinners they were a big hit in Germany.
"Wow, Edgeworth's so cultured Nick!"
"It's hardly a band I listen to regularly, but the members of the band are of interest to me."
"Edgeworth's a fangirl Nick," Maya whispered, but since she was riding in shotgun Edgeworth could hardly fail to hear her. From the look it brought on Edgeworth's face Phoenix couldn't help laughing.
"Of course not! The band are formed from members of the police department and the prosecution office."
"Really?" Phoenix was surprised. He tried to imagine Gumshoes and Edgeworth in a rock band but the image was unsettling.
