“I have the feeling that Trucy is not going to be very happy when she sees all of her stuff packed in boxes when she gets home from school.” Apollo commented to Phoenix as he moved a box of Trucy's stuff to the outer office.
“Nah, Trucy'll be okay. She's a big girl.” Phoenix said as he taped up another box. “Besides, she was really excited when you decided to take over Wright and Co. that she offered to help re-vamp the office.”
Apollo walked back into the inner-office scratching his head. “So, where are we putting all of her stuff.” He said slowly, grabbing another box.
“Ah, well, I was thinking we could move her most important stuff to the Wunderbar, and the rest we'll move into storage.”
“Ema! What are you doing here?” Phoenix heard Apollo exclaim from the outer office and smiled. He finished the box he was working on and got up to walk into the outer office and stopped dead in his tracks.
“M-miles...” He said in a whisper and gripped the door jamb to steady himself. He watched as Apollo shook the prosecutor's hand.
“It's nice to meet you Miles Edgeworth. The little I've heard about you from Phoenix has all been good.” Apollo smiled up at the handsome man.
“Thank you Apollo,” Miles glanced over at Phoenix and drew in a breath. He had seen Phoenix on the news after the trial, descending the courthouse stairs, and he had cleaned up since then. He was shaved and dressed in black trousers with a white dress shirt that was untucked and the sleeves were rolled up. It was only a glance, but it was enough for the memories to come flooding back. “Ema told me a little about you on our way over here.” Miles had to speak, or he would have run out of the office, screaming.
Phoenix shoved his hands into his pockets and felt like he was nine again. He licked his lips. Why was everything so dry all of a sudden?
“What brings you back to the states, Miles?”
“It's nice to see you too, Wright.”
“Ah...I, or we, came over to grab my report from you, Mr. Wright. I forgot to make a copy during all the madness of the trial.” Ema adjusted her glasses as she glanced at Apollo. They gave each other a knowing look about the tension in the air.
“Oh, I know where that is.” Apollo gestured for Ema to follow him as he started to walk out of the room.
Phoenix rocked back on his heels and stared at the floor.
Miles crossed his arm over himself and turned his head.
“Umm...So seriously, what brings you back, Miles?” Phoenix found the courage to look at Miles. His hair was the same, his demeanor was the same. He imagined his body was leaner and his skin was soft and smelled musky. His dress was different. There was no cravat and no magenta jacket. Just a black dress shirt tucked loosely into magenta trousers. A light black jacket was worn over all of it. It was only a look, but it was enough for all of the most intimate memories of this man to come flooding back into Phoenix's mind.
“I...saw the jurist trial on the German news, and had to come over to see it for myself.” Miles never told Phoenix of his time with Kristoph, and in light of recent events, it would be quite a while before Phoenix would know the truth. He felt himself warm when he looked up and made eye contact with Phoenix's beautiful azure eyes. He swallowed. “Listen, Phoenix, I...we...”
“Yes, we do need to talk.” Phoenix finished the prosecutor's sentence for him. He scratched his neck nervously and stole a brief look into the inner office and saw Ema and Apollo engaged in an animated conversation. He stepped closer to Miles and rested his head on the prosecutors shoulder.
“I-I've missed you, Miles.” Phoenix sighed and it took all of Miles self control not to grab the dark-haired man and kiss him. Instead he wrapped an arm around him and rubbed his back.
“I'm going to be here for a couple of weeks. I want to help you get the Jurist system going strong.”
Phoenix stepped back and looked into Miles's soft gray eyes; eyes that could set Phoenix on fire; eyes that held so much pain...Phoenix reached up and touched the others face. “Thank you.”
Miles started to respond but was interrupted by Apollo and Ema walking into the room, arguing. Phoenix quickly took his hand away from Miles's face.
“Klavier is so full of himself to just presume that we would come to another concert! Argh, that man frustrates me!” Ema was animated and angry. Miles smiled to himself as he thought of what Klavier did to his sister.
“I think he was just being nice and wanted everyone to loosen up after what happened, thats all.” Apollo shoved his hands in his pockets and shrugged.
“Ppfff...Klavier being nice...” Ema rolled her eyes and started snaking on the Snakoos she pulled out of her satchel.
Miles drew in a deep breath and gave a small smile to Phoenix, then turned to Ema. “Did you get your report?”
“Ugh, yes, after this idiot left coffee rings on it.” She jabbed Apollo in the ribs and he yelped.
“Hey, I had to empty my hands quickly...”
“Wright, are you moving?” Miles gestured at the boxes.
“Oh, ahh...no, actually, Apollo here is taking over Wright and Co.” He scratched the back of his neck and smiled sheepishly.
“Ahh...I see.” Miles nodded his head slowly. “I wish you all the luck in the world. Those are some very large shoes to step into. However from what I saw on the news, I believe you will do just fine.” Miles cleared his throat. “Kristoph may have...snapped, but he was an excellent defense lawyer and a good mentor, despite everything, I would think.” Phoenix's eyebrows knitted together in confusion while Apollo and Ema looked at Miles incredulously. “Of course, Wright will be a much better mentor, in light of things.”
“Um, thanks Mr. Edgeworth, but I didn't realize you knew Kristoph.” Apollo tilted his head inquisitively.
“I went to law school in Germany with him. He had a very cool, unnerving demeanor that would give witnesses, and prosecutors alike the chills.”
Phoenix was silent as Miles glanced over at him. The talk was going to happen sooner than later.
“Um, we should get going. I don't want to keep Franziska waiting any longer than I have to. That woman is frightful when you make her wait any longer that she deems necessary.”
“I'm glad to see that somethings haven't changed.” Phoenix said loud enough for Miles to hear. Miles threw him a confused look as he went to shake Apollo's hand. The look wasn't completely lost on Apollo. After Ema and Miles left, he turned to Phoenix, who was rubbing his forehead.
“What was that all about?”
“Nothing.” Phoenix snapped at the boy. He took a deep breath to calm himself. “I'm sorry, I'll tell you about it sometime.”
“A-are you sure? There was a lot of tension in this room just now?”
“Yes, thank you.” Phoenix gripped the bridge of his nose. “It's just been a while since I've seen Miles and ... well, lets just leave at that, for now.”
“I-I...uh, okay, I guess,” Apollo said quietly.
“Listen, I-I need to get some air. I'll be back shortly.” Phoenix was out the door before he could get a response from the young defense attorney. Apollo let out a puff of air in frustration and pulled out his phone.
“Klavier, I need a favor, please?”
“Ahh...good afternoon to you too Herr Forehead.” Klavier chuckled “What can I do for you?”
“Is it possible to look up a couple of old case files and profiles?”
Klavier was silent for a beat before he answered. “It depends on what type of case. Who are you looking for?”
“I-I ... ahhh....need some info on a client that I have recently taken on and I think they were involved in a previous case.”
“Herr Forehead. Do you really think that I'm that big of an idiot? I can tell when you are lying!”
Apollo made a noise of protest. “Fine, I need information on Miles Edgeworth.”
Silence.
“Klavier?”
“Ja, listen Apollo, I don't think you want to get involved in all that. Miles is an important man and he doesn't need you nosing around in his personal affairs.”
“What are you talking about? I was just curious about how Miles and Kristoph knew each other and the relationship between him and Phoenix.”
“R-relationship?”
Apollo sat on one of the sturdier boxes. “Miles and Ema were just here and when Phoenix saw Miles he just froze up and started fidgeting. I wasn't sure what to make of it.”
“Hmm...well, if you want to know everything you ever wanted to know about Miles Edgeworth, I do have a profile and a couple of case files that, strangely have not made it through the yearly office cleaning.” Klavier paused and Apollo could hear his fingers flying over the keyboard. “This file was saved by... Kristoph...but why would he want to save this file?”
“What is it?”
“DL-6 is the title of one case and DL-9 is the title of the other. Maybe you should come over and take a look for yourself.”
“Thank you Klavier. I'll be over shortly.”
