This is one of my favorite pairings and I don't think their relationship could possibly be written better. Your story picked up right where JFA left off, and from there it's like a moment that the games don't show you but still exists just beyond canon. What you've captured here is the interaction between two people, and though both have their own closet skeletons and flaws, they aren't afraid to work through their problems and reach out to one another. Both women have grown during that brief time together. Franziska's terrible father left her with a philosophy that threatened to leave her cold and empty and unloving, yet she was able to accept that not all things in life are logical or explainable and leave behind his unreachable expectations. I think one of my favorite chapters was the nightmare scene, and how Franziska eventually told the ghost of her father that she was more than just a Von Karma, but a woman who wanted to be accepted. I'm glad you included Miles and how he is the only one in Franziska's family to really care for her and how he's achieved what she's trying so hard to figure out (which is also, incidentally, why I just don't
get them as a couple, but that's another topic). Adrian also went through a realization in that she is more comfortable with herself and more confident about what she wants. They fit perfectly together, just like a rose and its thorns (speaking of roses, Gunther was a hilariously enjoyable character, worthy of inclusion in a PW storyline).
In terms of writing style, dialogue is definitely one of your strong points. I could really feel the tense emotions of the two women's conversations, with what was left unsaid often being just as important as what was said aloud. You also describe every scene perfectly without going overboard into frivolous details, and I always had a clear image of what was happening. Your writing is also witty and humorous at times, breaking up the tense moments nicely. And sometimes, it was just too damn cute for words.
The romance was drawn out in a believable way, though by the time they finally kissed I was very relieved. The development of their feelings always seemed natural and realistic, never forced. Though it was sad to think of their parting, I'm certain that they'll be together again before long, when Franziska realizes where she wants her path in life to lead.
On a more personal note, I really enjoyed the perception you had on the relationship between two women. You don't have to be gay to love someone of the same gender, and I appreciated that insight.
Excellently done, and a great fic to read right after
Struggling Against Gravity (my other favorite pairing).
