A/N: NEW CHAPTER! Even though I'm not getting any reviews for this story, I feel obliged to...keep it alive somehow. Now, I promised
a link or
two, didn't I?

That's just a taste of what's to come, my dearies!
Now, for some

/

filler-ness that makes me feel all warm in fuzzy inside!

(Blame Mia_Fey for it...she practically made the ship my OTP!)
PS: I know I'm making Vera a bit OOC, but that's because she's married now, so she has had time to grow. Plus, I
knew I warned you that I fail at canon!

CHAPTER TWO: 'The Family Justice'
25 April 2022Justice ResidenceNear LACalifornia, USAMan...Vera's not going to like this...I came in late again... Apollo thought as he gingerly got up from the bed, trying not to wake his bride, Vera. The wife-beater he wore was sweat-drenched, and the sleeping-boxers he had on were practically clinging to him, as if not wanting to let go of his manhood. His hair was matted, and his famous hair-style had been flattened.
God, he felt so guilty. Even though he and Vera were married for the past month or so, he felt like this had been an ongoing problem. It had been when they were dating, and he usually slept on the couch because of this.
He knew why he came in late last night. He was busy talking with Mr. Wright, who called him in to talk about...something. Apollo didn't understand most of it, but Wright kept talking about how a woman he knew (What was her name again? 'Deloris?' 'Eris?' Apollo couldn't be bothered to remember now, not at this current point in time) wasn't acting the same as she used to. Apollo hadn't met the woman before...all Wright did was just mention her whenever he and Trucy were talking.
Wait...aw, crap. Gotta call Trucy to check up on her. Have to work that in... As he left the bedroom, Apollo heard a soft moan come from the bedroom. Vera, as it happened, had started to wake up.
"Polly...?" She groaned, just beginning to wake up as she lifted her head from her pillow.
Apollo had a sinking feeling of what she'd ask next. "Yes, sweetheart?" He replied, trying to sound not as guilty as he was already feeling.
Aw, there it goes!"How late did you get in?" Vera asked, rubbing her eyes. She yawned and stretched, swing her legs over the nearest side of the bed she and her husband shared. Her blue hair was ruffled, with bits of hair falling in front of her eyes. The back of her nightdress was riding up, giving Apollo a nice view of the back of his wife's upper legs when she got up and walked past him into the kitchen, which he doubly followed suit.
Usually, Apollo got in at a decent time before Vera got dinner ready, but rarely ever did he come in late. When he
did come in late, it was a sign that something was up. It was either that he was working on a new case or he was busy with something else. Vera hoped that it wasn't some
one else...of course, with all of the time he spent with her, she could put that fear in the back of her mind for now. He was much too loyal for his own good, and she liked it that way, but she couldn't bear to go through another betrayal, not after Kristoph.
"Uh...honey, I don't know...maybe...11:30?" Apollo replied, unsure of how she would react. When he came in that late, she would read him the riot act.
To his surprise or relief (he couldn't tell which), Vera only replied with a simple "Ok." And that was that.
Of course, as with every morning before breakfast, whether he got in late or not, Vera got this prickly feeling that her husband was staring. Not that it bothered her in any way; in fact, she almost found it cute.
Giggling softly, she asked in a low, husky voice, "Polly, are you staring at my legs again?"
====
The kitchen wasn't that small, nor was it grand in size, but it was just right for two people, or at least for the moment. Apollo joked at his wedding that with his current job and Vera's talents being shown to the world via galleries, who had time for kids?
Vera was at the oven, currently making tailor ham and eggs. She jostled the pan a bit to keep the pan she held warm, but it was more for the food than the style. Still, Apollo could say that with his wife's cooking, he could live forever. And that was more than saying she made good food. No, she made
excellent food.
Apollo was busy in the cupboards, getting plates and glasses for the two of them. Of course, he grabbed two more plates than he should have, but that was for the food, he kept telling himself. Even though he wasn't cooking this morning, he
had to help for this morning. It was his way of saying 'sorry' for coming in late.
As the two began to prepare to eat, Vera couldn't help but notice that Apollo was helping her again. It didn't bother her much, but it was a clear sign that her husband was trying to make up for something. Usually, that 'something' was coming in late, but it was instantly forgiven as soon as he walked in the door and slipped under the covers.
Not even turning away from the stove, Vera sighed. "Polly, honey, please. Stop feeling like coming in late is a crime."
Apollo paused after placing two drinking glasses on the table. How to reply, how to reply...
"I know I shouldn't feel that way, but I can't help it, sweetheart. I can't help but feel like...I'm not there for you when you need me most..." He did the best he could at explaining why he felt as such.
"So you
have to carry it over to the
morning?" Though it was usually quiet, Vera's voice suddenly gained an edge and Apollo became afraid of that she might use it. He knew that he needed to tread carefully, otherwise his ability to reproduce would be woefully hindered.
"It's not like that...It's just that...I feel like I'm not doing enough to help you..." Great,
now he almost guaranteed his wife's verbal explosion.
"As if having a
good, well-paying job and making
me happy isn't
enough?" Oh, goody.
Now she was mad. Even though her change in tone and volume was slight, Apollo knew he was in for it...this happened whenever he tried to explain something while the two were dating...
"Sweetheart...I'm trying my best...I'm trying to be a good husband...The thing is...I don't remember if I even called, saying I'd come in late last night..."
"And allow me to
jump your memory: You
did call last night."
"...Ok, so I did. But--"
"'But'
nothing, Apollo! You don't
have to
apologize for
every time you're late coming home!"
Apollo couldn't believe it. Vera
never got
this angry, not when they were dating...
"I'm sorry for--"
"For
what? Calling me? Letting me
know that you weren't going to be home
in time for dinner? Letting me
know that you were
safe?"
"--Putting you through this. I
know I
shouldn't feel guilty about coming home late, but even when I
call you to let you know I'm working late, I can't help but feel...
guilty that I won't be able to spend time with you..."
Vera sighed heavily, letting out all her anger in one, simple breath. She knew her husband well enough that he'd bend over sideways to make her happy.
Needless to say, the rest of their morning went without another word spoken.
