Before Maya entered the office, she paused just outside the door. She had never felt so nervous before! (But why? It’s not even a date! Is it?)
Once again, a battle went on inside Maya’s head:
“He must like you!” said the happier sounding voice. “Finally, what you’ve been waiting for!”
“He doesn’t like you in that way! Hello? Mia’s little sister!” the doubtful voice reminded her.
“Mia would be ok with it! You know she would. In fact, I bet she’d be happy for you!”
“So? Doesn’t mean anything, Maya. Just cause’ she’d be ok with it doesn’t mean he would! He likes you as a friend”
“Do 'friends' ask you to come and see them late at night alone?!”
Maya sighed; she wasn’t getting anywhere, no further to the truth than a moment ago. She realized there was no way of knowing how he felt without asking him straight out, and the first step would be going inside like he had asked her to. She timidly pushed the door open.
“H-hello? Nick, are you there?” She called out.
“Maya!” Phoenix smiled. “You’re early! I wasn’t expecting you for about 10 minutes!”
“Oh sorry, should I come back in 10 then?” She laughed, sounding more relaxed than she felt.
Maya walked into the middle of the room to get a proper look at what Phoenix was doing; she recognized the room, as she had been her many times before, but she always felt it had a different atmosphere at night. She thought back to the night when she had entered the office to find Mia dead. It had been 3 years since she had met Phoenix because he had defended her when she was accused of murdering Mia. He’d stuck by her and gotten to the truth, and she was eternally grateful to him for that. (Maybe that’s why I love him? He’s everything I’ve ever wanted. He’s kind; he’s caring and cute on top of all that!).
“So um, what is all of this?” she asked. She noticed Phoenix had placed a TV in the middle of the room in front of the sofa, and there were two bowls of popcorn.
“Oh… Well, it was supposed to be a surprise… Kind of, well... it would have been, but then you got here early, so it’s not really finished. Anyway, all of this…” He gestured around the room. “Is for later, if you’ll just step through here…” He pointed towards the door.
Maya walked through into Phoenix’s office. There was a small table for two people laid out with a red table cloth and silver cutlery. The room had been decorated beautifully with purple and red candles, setting the room perfectly for a romantic dinner for two.
“Wow, Nick! This is… amazing!” Maya exclaimed. (This must have taken ages to set up!)
“Thanks, Maya.” Phoenix paused. “I-I thought you deserved a treat after what happened at the bar. I know it doesn’t make up for how selfish I was, but... I wanted to try anyway…”
“You don’t have anything to be sorry about though…” (I wish he’d quit blaming himself, it just makes me feel bad!) “Anyway,” Maya said, trying to lift the mood. “What’s for dinner? Do I smell burgers?”
“Yeah! They’re nearly cooked. Only about a minute or so until they’re done,” Phoenix answered.
“Fantastic! It’s been days since I last had a good meal…” (Or a good burger.) “So, um, what are we watching later then?”
“Ah, where would be the surprise in that?” Phoenix said with mysterious glint in his eye.
Maya’s jaw dropped “What? That’s not fair!” she gave Phoenix a playful push.
“Hey, I thought you liked surprises!” He answered with a smug grin on his face.
“I do… I’m just very changeable!” Maya answered. (He’s so cute when he’s smug!)
“So you won’t be wanting this then?” He held up a small box that looked as though it contained jewellery of some sort and grinned cockily. “Ah well, too bad… maybe I’ll just keep it for myself…”
“That’s not fair either! Go on, give it here. You know you want to!” Maya laughed, attempting to grab it out of his hands.
“No, no, sorry, guess you’ll have to wait till later,” Phoenix said with a disapproving look on his face, but then smiled and put the package back in his pocket. He glanced over. “Looks like the burgers are done!” He shovelled them onto the plates and poured them both a glass of champagne.
“Ooh, champagne? How much did this meal cost, Nick?” Maya worried once again. She knew Phoenix didn’t have a lot of money.
“Meh, it’ll be ok. I just got a new client after all, I’m representing him tomorrow in fact!” (I sure hope he’s rich… and he pays me!) “Besides, I don’t really mind spending money…” (Who am I kidding?) “…And anyway, this is supposed to be a treat to say sorry, so I don’t really mind.”
Maya tucked into her burger. Nick looked down at his plate. (These burgers sure are big, it should be a struggle to finish this off.) He looked back up. Maya had already eaten half of her burger.
“Wow Maya! You ate that fast!” Phoenix exclaimed.
“Yeah well, I’m hungry!” (And nervous!) She thought.
Phoenix picked up his burger and began to eat, but was disturbed rather quickly by Maya talking.
“Nick? Why did you do all this?” She asked suddenly.
“T-to say sorry,” he stammered back.
“No, but really… There must be another reason, It’s nothing to do with… what we were talking about earlier, is it?”
“W-what?” Phoenix said, shocked. “Um-”
“Never mind!” Maya said hurriedly. “It doesn’t matter.” (Why? Why did I just bring it up like that? This is sooo awkward now!) “So, who’s this new client you were talking about earlier?” She asked quickly, changing the subject.
“Oh,” Phoenix said, thrown of by the sudden change. “Just some famous Magician guy, Zak Gramayre, you heard of him?” he asked, taking a bite of his burger.
“Gramyre? Zak Gramayre? Are you kidding?” Maya’s jaw once again dropped. “Oh my God! I love his show! The Three Gramayre’s: Zak, Valant and Thalassa! This is awesome! Maybe I can help you with the case?”
“Wow Maya, they’re only magicians! How can you get so excited?” Phoenix asked. (I knew she liked children’s programs, but surely she must know all the stunts are illusions.) “Anyway, all’s not so happy right now, recently a guy named Magnifi Gramayre was murdered, and they think it was Zak who did it.”
“Really?” She looked down glumly.
“Don’t worry about it, though!” (Better reassure her) “It’ll be ok; after all, I’ve never lost a case before! Everything will work out in the end!”
“Hey, it’s ok, I’m not a kid. I know bad stuff happens in real life, Nick! In fact… I know that better than most people do…” Maya replied. (Once again, he’s implying I’m some immature kid! I’ll show him!)
“Yeah, I guess you do.” (Better steer away from the subject of what happened with her mother recently!) Phoenix looked up and got a proper look at Maya. “Wow! I just noticed, you’re not in you medium outfit!”
“Oh, yeah, well… I don’t wear that all the time”
(You don’t? This is news to me, It’s all I’ve ever seen you in!) “I guess you don’t, well, either way… That top looks really nice on you,” he said hurriedly before blushing furiously.
“Oh thank you, I’ve had this for ages. I just don’t wear it a lot.” (Who am I kidding, I spent like an hour putting together this outfit! It took him that long to notice?)
She was wearing a pink strapless top, but had still worn her Magatama necklace, and paired it with black skinny leg jeans. Very far from her usual costume.

“Phew! Well, I’m stuffed,” Phoenix said, adjusting his belt slightly and leaning back on his chair.
“I know, yeah, me too!” She agreed after her third burger. “So, are you ready to surprise me with this film you’re being so secretive about yet?”
“Yeah, why not?” Phoenix got up and took the plates they had been eating on over onto his desk. Maya joined him in standing up and followed him into the room outside Phoenix’s office.
“Ooh, popcorn!” Maya exclaimed excitedly.
“I thought you were full?”
“Nick, do you ever learn? There’s always room for popcorn, especially when you’re watching a movie!”
“Ah yes, I forgot about the bottomless pit that is your stomach.”
“Cheek!” Maya laughed, picking up a cushion and throwing it at him.
Phoenix laughed back and bent down to put the DVD into the machine. After a moment, a menu screen loaded, revealing what movie Phoenix had got her.
“Wow Nick! The third Pink Princess movie… Wait, hasn’t this only come out in Japan?” she asked after pausing to think for a moment.
“Yeah, but I imported a translated copy,” he answered.
“Why did you spend all that money just on me?” (I don’t mean to sound ungrateful or anything, but I know he doesn’t have a lot of money!)
“Because… well, because, I’d do anything for you. That’s why, you and Pearls… you’re like… my family.”
(Me and Pearly? This isn’t good! I'm getting really mixed signals here; one second I think this is a date, the next it’s a family gathering.)
Phoenix joined Maya in sitting down to watch the movie.
(Trust Nick to choose an Action film! I wanted to curl up to him like I’m scared, I can’t do that now… or can I?)
About 20 minutes into the movie, Phoenix got up to replenish the popcorn and Maya went to the toilet. When she came back, Phoenix was already sitting down.
(I bet I can get away with sitting a little closer to him now without being to obvious!)
She sat down and, as Phoenix didn’t complain about how little room he had left of the sofa, she stayed put.
An hour passed, and Maya looked at her watch.
(Wow, it’s getting really late now! It’s nearly 10.30; at this rate, I won’t be able to catch a taxi or a train out of here.)
Phoenix yawned and stretched his arm up around the back of where Maya was sitting. Maya shivered with excitement.
“Are you cold?” Phoenix asked, getting the wrong idea. He pulled her towards him with his arm around her.
(No, but I’m not going to correct him!) He leaned forward and poured them both their 3rd glass of champagne. Maya was beginning to feel very tired right now, but they continued with the movie none the less.
After another 45 minutes, despite being incredibly comfortable tucked under Phoenix’s arm, she started wondering when the movie was going to end. (How long is this? I’m so tired and I want to talk to Nick! I can’t do that when the film's on, can I?)
30 minutes more passed, and finally the movie credits rolled. Phoenix had a headache and felt very sluggish.
(Oh great! I’m due in court tomorrow, and I’m going to have hangover!) “Well, that was a very long movie,” he said drowsily.
“I know,” Maya replied. “I was beginning to wonder if it was ever going to end.” She paused, realizing how tactless she had been. “Not that I didn’t enjoy it or anything though!” she added. “…Nick… I just wanted to say… Thanks for all this, I’ve had a really good time tonight.”
“Me too, I care about you so much, I just wanted… to show you that…” Phoenix eyes looked out of focus a little, as if he was staring at something, but Maya couldn’t see what it was.
“I-I love you Nick, you’re everything to me. You’ve always been there for me, whatever happened, even if it meant putting you out of you comfort zone…”
Maya leaned in and kissed Phoenix. She didn’t feel him pulling away, so she continued, making each kiss a little longer and more passionate. After a moment she felt him begin to kiss her back, whether it was because he’d had a little too much to drink or because he truly loved her back, Maya did not know; all she cared about was how right Phoenix’s lips felt upon hers. Phoenix and Maya spent several long minutes embracing on his sofa before Phoenix eventually pulled away.
“Maya…” He said as he’d felt her begin to take of his jacket and shirt. “I don’t know if I can, I’m… well, I don’t know if I’m ready or not…”
“Oh… well, I understand, kissing’s fine with me!” She pulled him into another passionate kiss. (Not ready? How can he feel this way about me and not be ready? I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long, I just don’t get that…)
She cuddled back up underneath Phoenix arm once again, mulling over everything. It took her a moment to realize. Then she understood what she had to do...
