Chapter1

“Well, here’s to another successful trail!” said Phoenix Wright as he walked out of the courtroom after yet another fierce courtroom battle, which he (of course) had won.

“Yeah, you were great Nick! You had them hanging of your every word,” replied Maya with a huge grin on her face. She always felt happy after Phoenix won cases; she liked to think that she’d helped him a little.

“Well, I couldn’t have done it without you getting hold of that decisive evidence. What do you say we go for a drink? My treat,” Phoenix offered.

“Yeah, that would be great! Oh, and we could go for some burgers as well. I’m starving!” answered Maya.

“Um, Maya, you know I’m not made of money. I have to pay the bills or we’ll lose the office. Maybe just a drink this time? Phoenix looked over at Maya expecting to see her argue but was pleasantly surprised.

“Oh yeah! Sorry, I forget about that. A drink will be fine then.” Hmm it’s like he still thinks of me as a little kid. I know he was expecting me to throw a tantrum as if I was a spoiled toddler when he said that. How can I prove to him I’m not like that?

“Great! Anywhere in particular you’d like to go?” asked Phoenix.

“Hmm…” A few ideas sprung into her mind; Messy Joe's, Ben’s burger shack... Not exactly mature. I can hardly blame him for having that opinion if that’s my repertoire of eating places!

“No, not really, you can choose.” Answered Maya after pausing to think.

“Ok,” said Phoenix, who stopped to size her up for a moment. Weird. That’s not at all like Maya; I thought she’d choose something like “Bob’s Burger Bar” or Burgers R us” “How about that small bar on 5th street?”

“Yeah, that sounds fine,” replied Maya a quiet drink in a bar, perfect opportunity to prove how mature I am.……….

It was only a short walk from the courtroom plaza to the small bar and therefore only took them about 10 minutes to reach it. Maya could see as soon as they got there it was a grown up bar with only adults there, no kids.

“Wow this place is um…really nice Nick.” Why am I finding this so weird? It’s not like I’ve never been to a bar before.

“Hey, this place is ok, right?" asked Phoenix. "We’re only going for a celebratory drink, after all.”

“Of course, I’ll find a table…” said Maya

“…and I’ll get the drinks” Phoenix continued. This was their usual ritual when going to bars.
Maya looked around the bar and saw small tables she went to one of the tables for two in the corner. She sat down and looked over to the bar to see if Phoenix had got the drinks yet. Phoenix was leaning against the bar and talking to the barmaid, who didn’t seem to be making any drinks.

Hmm…I wish he’d hurry up and get the drinks already. What does he think he’s doing picking up women while I’m over here waiting?) The barmaid let out a loud laugh. Maya felt a stab of annoyance at being left at the table while he had fun. (if he doesn’t bring those drinks here in a second I’m gonna go up there and… Finally Phoenix picked up the drinks and brought them over.

“Hey, sorry to keep you waiting. The bars a little understaffed,” said Phoenix, putting down the drinks. “I forgot to ask you what you wanted, so I just got you white wine like you normally have.”

“Yeah, that’s fine, though I’m sure she could have got the drinks a lot quicker if you hadn’t been chatting with her,” Maya snapped.

“Talking to her. She happened to ask me if I wanted a drink with her sometime.” Phoenix obviously wasn't sensing her tone. “I might actually say yes, but I haven’t decided yet. I haven’t gone out on a date for ages. Not since… Dahlia… no wait… Iris.”

Maya felt a sudden dropping sensation in the stomach, like the kind you get on a theme park ride, but the feeling she had wasn’t fun. Why do I feel like that all of a sudden? Maybe I’m hungry. I knew I should have fought for “Ben’s Burger shack” harder.

“Hello, anyone there? Maya?” questioned Phoenix.

“…Um, yeah, sorry. What did you ask?” Maya asked, snapping out of her thoughts.

“Well, I didn’t ask anything. I was just saying that I might consider going out with the barmaid. You know, the one who asked me out?”

“Oh… um, yeah” Maya said lamely. What more can I say?
At that moment a familiar tinkly sound filled their ears; Maya’s cell phone was going off.

“Sorry. I’d better answer that” She got up and walked outside the bar; there was an uninhabited picnic bench, so she sat down on it. Maya checked the screen to see who was calling and saw that it was Pearl. She clicked “accept call”.

“Hey Pearly, what’s up?” Maya greeted.

“Hey, and not much really. Just thought I’d call to see how you were and what you were up to…”

“Oh cool, not up to a lot really. Just going for a drink with Nick.”

“So Mr Nick won his case then?”

“Yeah, so we thought we’d celebrate.”

“Mr. Nick’s paying right? Because that’s how it should be in a relationship, the man should pay for the woman.”

“Pearly, me and Nick aren’t in a relationship, I already told you.”

“…Of course you're not… Mystic Maya, are you really telling me you want nothing but friendship with Mr. Nick? Forever?”

Maya paused. “I don’t know what I want anymore. I’m really confused…”

“Um, Mystic Maya? Why aren’t you fiercely denying all of this? That’s what you usually do”.

“I know, but… ”

“But what?”

“But that was before today… The pretty barmaid asked Nick out and… well, he’s thinking about saying yes. When I found out, I suddenly felt really strange, and I had this sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. I don’t know what it all means though…”

“What, like you were jealous?"

“Maybe… I never felt jealous before when he said he thought certain women were pretty.”

“Yeah, but he’s never had a girlfriend while you’ve known him."

“Nope, I guess he could have gone out with Iris after that trail earlier... but she was in prison so I’ve never given it any thought…”

“Well, maybe you felt this because all those women have never really shown a lot of interest in him. If they had, perhaps you would have realized sooner”

“Realized what exactly?”

“That you’re in love with Mr. Nick, of course!”

“What?!? I’m in love with… Nick? What do you mean? I can’t be… can I?"

“Um... Mystic Maya, I have to go now. I nearly used up all the crevite on the phone”

“Credit, Pearls, credit. Anyway, See you when I get back to Kurain Village. That’ll be tomorrow probably. I’ll ring you if I change my mind and decide to stay here longer, ok? Bye!”

“Bye Mystic Maya! Good luck with Mr. Nick!”

Maya hung up.

Thanks Pearly, I have a feeling I’m going to need all the luck I can get!

Well that's chapter one i hope anyone who read it liked it!

Chapter2

Back in the bar, Phoenix had been waiting for 10 minutes and was beginning to wonder whether Maya was coming back or not. (I wish she’d hurry up. If I stay sitting here for much longer with two drinks, people are going to think I’ve been stood up! Maybe I should go find her and make sure she’s ok?). Just as he got up, Maya walked through the door. If I sit down now she’ll think I’m going without her, better just walk over to her like normal.

“Hey! Everything ok? I was beginning to wonder if you’d been abducted,” laughed Phoenix.

“Nope, I’m fine. It was just Pearly. She wanted to talk to me about something,” replied Maya putting her phone down on the table.

Maya’s conversation had left her feeling very confused about how she felt about Phoenix, and seeing him straight after this hadn’t helped at all. Am I really in love with him? I’ve known him for four years and never felt like this before, so what’s changed? Have I? Or…Has he? Grrr, none of this makes any sense!

“Um Maya, Knock, knock, anyone there?” Sheesh! Her head sure is in the clouds today. Something must be bothering her.

“Huh? Oh yeah, I agree! Really I do!” burbled Maya.

“Um, okay, you do realize that that makes no sense, right?” Phoenix said, raising one eyebrow. “Is something wrong?”

“No, of course there isn’t, what makes you think there would be something wrong?” asked a very jumpy Maya .

Well for one the 5 Psyche Locks that just appeared. Maybe I should see if I can convince her to tell me without using the Magatama, especially since I don’t have any evidence. “Come on Maya, I know something’s wrong, it’s like you’re on a different planet or something.”

“Yeah, well I’m not, and there’s nothing wrong,” Maya replied.

“Stop lying and tell me the truth!” Why is she hiding something this big form me? It must be really bad!

“Do you think that by shouting at me the way you do to witnesses in court that I’m just going to confess all? We’re not in court anymore Nick! It doesn’t work like that, so just drop it, ok!?” snapped Maya.

Wow, I’ve never seen Maya get angry before. Now I’m really worried about what’s bothering her! Maybe I can bluff it out of her? “What if I already know what’s wrong?” Phoenix said in an attempt at an understanding, kind voice.

“Bluffing now, are we Nick? You can’t possibly know what I’m hiding!” Maya gave a cheeky grin “I know you too well.” (That, and if he did know what I’m hiding, he wouldn’t be anywhere near as calm as he is right now!)

“Heh…” Yeah she does know me too well… How am I supposed to break this secret? “Are you sure you’re ok though, Maya?”

Maya’s face turned sad again. “I’m not kidding Nick, really. Just drop it.”

“Ok.” Yeah I’d better; I don’t want her to turn scary again! “Sooooo,” Phoenix said trying to change the subject “Shall I go and get some more drinks? we’re both nearly finished, after all.”

“Yeah, ok, sounds good. I’ll have the same as before, although technically us Spirit Mediums aren’t supposed to drink too much.”

Phoenix got up and walked over to the bar. The same bar maid was still on duty; she smiled and said “Just couldn’t keep away, eh?”

“Yeah, something like that,” Phoenix said, smiling.

“I hope I wasn’t being too forward by asking you out for a drink before. I didn’t realize you were here with a girl.”

“W-wait, w-we’re not together! F-friends, just friends!” suddenly Phoenix felt very tense. “What makes you think we’re anything more?” he asked.

“Um, nothing… But you got pretty defensive the minute I asked...” The barmaid said.

“I have my reasons… Oh yeah, and by the way, I never got your name.”

“Heather. I can’t believe I asked you out without even giving you my name.” She laughed.

“Yeah. My names… Phoenix” He paused self consciously. Hmm… it never really occurred to me that people might think we’re a couple. I never even thought of us as a couple…

“So your friend over there won’t mind us going for that drink then? She won’t feel starved of your attention?” Heather said, bringing Phoenix back down to earth.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“I just mean that I’ve seen you two here before, and you always act kind of… like a couple… Won’t she get jealous of you if you suddenly start dating?”

“Nah, Maya’s not the jealous type. Why, when I mentioned you before she was… fine… about… it…” Phoenix trailed off. But she wasn’t, she suddenly started acting weird! What does that mean? This doesn’t look good, especially since she’s keeping a massive secret from me!

Heather passed Phoenix the drinks.

“Uh, thanks,” he said as he carried the drinks away from the bar.

“So, about that drink?”

“Now’s not such a great time... sorry. I’ll get back to you.”

I really will, once I’ve had a chat with Maya!

Chapter3

Phoenix brought over the drinks and sat down at the table with Maya.

“Hey! There you go,” he said passing her drink over.

“Hi, and thanks. Are you sure you don’t want me to pay? After what you said earlier, I feel kinda bad. You always pay… I’m just like a sponge…” Why is it all I seem to be getting is negative thoughts after that conversation with Pearly?

“What? That’s not true! Besides, I already said, my treat. You got me the decisive evidence I needed earlier.” And I probably don’t pay her enough anyway, what with all the over costs of keeping the office open.

Maya looked sadly down at her lap.

“Maya… What’s wrong? Please, tell me… I hate seeing you so upset and not being able to help you out”

“There’s nothing wrong, and if there was, there still wouldn’t be anything you could do…”

“…” So basically there’s something wrong, but you’re not going to tell me what? Great, looks like I’m figuring this one out on my own! Here goes nothing! “Maya, are you worried that if I start dating Heather I won’t hang out with you as much?”

“Heather?” Maya asked.

“The barmaid. You know, the one who asked me out?” Phoenix explained “Because if you are, there’s really nothing to worry about.”

Maya paused “…” He couldn’t have said a worse thing if he had tried. A small argument was going on in Maya’s head.

“He thinks of you as a jealous, immature kid and always will,” said one voice.

“Well, maybe he would understand your reaction if he knew the truth?” argued the other.

“No way! He’d be all awkward around you, and your friendship would be over.”

“Yeah, but if he feels the same way…”

“He won’t… I’m just Mia’s little sister to him. That’s all I’ll ever be…”

A single tear slid down Maya’s face as soon as she realized he would never love her in the same way she loved him.

“I can’t believe you could be as conceited as to think that! The world doesn’t revolve around you Nick! Does it ever occur to you that I have bigger things on my mind than you and that slutty barmaid?” Being angry at him made walking away slightly easier as she got up and headed towards the door.

“Maya, wait! No, that’s not what I meant!” What else could I have meant by that comment? Still, what else am I supposed to think when she won’t tell me what’s going on in her life?
Just as Maya had pulled the door to exit a tall man wearing a balaclava grabbed her and pushed her towards the bar, pointing a small black pistol at her head. The relatively empty bar went completely silent. Nick tried to yell Maya’s name but the words didn’t come out.

“Right, you know how this works. Empty the contents of the till into this bag or I’ll shoot,” the man said “I’m not kidding.”

Heather quickly took the bag and started loading dollar bills into it. Nick tried to pluck up the courage to say something like, “Let her go!” but he couldn’t. After all, what if he shot?

“All of it! Don’t mess with me here! I can see there’s still money stashed at the back of the till!”

There was a sharp noise which sounded like gunshot. Phoenix heard Maya scream but could not bear to look in case she really had been shot. “What? Do you think I’m stupid? Is that why you’re testing my patience? Like I said; all the money or I’ll shoot to kill this time!”

She loaded the last of the money into the bag and handed it over to him. “Oh, I almost forgot, don’t anyone think of calling the police!” he said.

At that point another man who was slightly smaller, wearing a balaclava ran into the bar. “I think it’s a little late, we’re surrounded!” The man yelled.

“Wha-what? Ok, who rang the police? Because I swear, whoever it was is going to pay!” The man looked around the bar and saw that Maya’s phone was still on the table from her conversation with Pearl, his eyes moved along to phoenix, who was standing next to the table.
“Oi! It was you weren’t it? You’re the one who called the police?” He pointed the gun at Phoenix. “Right! I want everyone out of the bar now! I said now!”

Many people ran towards the door; others walked over timidly as the other man was pointing the gun at them all. “Oh, and by the way, tell the police we’re keeping these two as hostages. If they do anything, I’ll shoot them both.”

When everyone had exited the two men continued to point their guns at both Phoenix and Maya but also began to talk to each over. “What the hell are we supposed to do now? The police are outside! Maybe we should just give ourselves up? At least we’d only go down for robbery then, not murder!”

“Stop burbling!” We’ve got to negotiate the matter with the police, give them conditions!”
“Conditions like what?”

“Like… They let us go if we don’t kill these two!”

“That’ll never work! They’ll just take the hostages and arrest us!”

“Well, I don’t see you coming up with any better ideas!”

“I have an idea,” Phoenix said. “Let her go.” He pointed at Maya. “I’m the one who called the police, she’s done nothing wrong.”

Maya was in shock; whoever had called the police had endangered her life! And now Phoenix was admitting to doing that? How could he? Why couldn’t he have just let them get away with it? Then they wouldn’t be in this mess.
At that moment a sound came from outside the bar. “We would like to send a Police officer to negotiate with you. He will be unarmed. Is that ok?” It sounded as though it had come from a megaphone.

“This is our chance! Let me do all the talking!” The smaller man said. “Yes, we are prepared to negotiate.”

A small man stepped into the bar with a piece of paper in his hand and began to read it.
Phoenix edged himself closer to Maya. “They’re distracted right now, we should try to escape,” he whispered.

“No! Let’s just leave it to the police, Nick! They’ll negotiate and we’ll be ok.” She replied.
“… I can’t do that. Those men… They deserve to be locked up. If we can escape, it’s our duty to… then the police can arrest them.”

He cares about justice more than our lives? How can he be like that? All they’ve done is stealing some money; they haven’t killed anyone… yet.

“Come on Maya, we can run out through the back now!” They quietly edged to the storeroom behind the bar. Little did Phoenix know he would live to regret that moment for the rest of his life.

The smaller man turned around and a shot rang out through the bar. The bullet would have hit Phoenix had Maya not jumped in front of him at the last instant.

She fell to the floor in a pile as everything around her began to black out.

“MAAAYYYYYYAAAAA!!!!! Phoenix yelled “Maya! No!”

“Nick? I-I I’m losing site of you.” Maya whispered.

“No, Maya… you can’t… die! Just try and stay awake for me!” Phoenix looked down and saw she had a bullet hole in the top of her ribcage, close to her shoulder. “Please! Just until the paramedics can get to you!”

While all of the commotion had been going on the police had quickly arrested the two men and taken them outside to the police car.

“Ok Nick. I’ll try, just for you…” Maya said looking distinctly paler than she had a moment ago.

“You feel all cold.” Phoenix took off his suit jacket and wrapped it around Maya.

“Nick, please listen, if I don’t make it…”

“Don’t talk like that!” he replied shaking his head, unable to contemplate the thought.

“Ok, but just in case I don’t, please, look after Pearly. You’re like family to her.”

“Of course, I would never let anything happen to her!” he replied

“Nick?” Maya said with her eyes closing slowly. “I love you…”

Maya never heard his reply as everything truly blacked out then.

There it is, I gotta ask: Is it really that bad, why is no1 commenting? :larry:

omg it's awesome~ :D...though I can't imagine Nick OR Maya drinking or as regulars in a bar. Nor can I see a girl being so open to a guy or a complete stranger (well, almost) liking Nickin the first place (he just seems so dull and boring on the outside, without his sarcastic and funny thoughts) but that's the power of imagination/fandom! :D

The story's so sad...=/ poor Maya...and Nick D: But that creates more drama (which I love in fics/stories/tv) and it was the perfect way to make Maya confess her feelings without all those making out and kissing scenes or those awkward sliences then the kissing scenes XD. And omgosh! My heart was actually pounding when the dude pointed his gun at Maya and when Maya was shot :O! Oh and is this the end or are you going to continue it? If this is truly the end, maybe you can write an alternate ending where Maya lives? :D Hmm, and there were a FEW spelling mistakes (or words that are used incorrectly)

GREAT JOB! :butzthumbs:

and...Nick and Maya forever! <33 :kissy: *runs off*

Chapter4

Maya’s eyes slowly opened.

(Oww, my head! Where am I?)

“She’s waking up! Quickly, make sure we have some oxygen ready!” said a man's voice that sounded as if it was quite far away. “Maya, you were shot at in a bar robbery and have been in a coma at your local hospital. Can you hear me?” it asked.

“Y-yes, I can hear you.” Suddenly, she felt a sharp pain in her lower shoulder near her ribcage. She yelled out in pain.

“It’s ok Maya, we’re just going to give you some more pain killers to make you more comfortable. My name is Doctor Kasal and I’m the doctor in charge of your treatment,” he said.

“O-Ok, um… thanks,” Maya replied, stammering as she began to remember everything that happened.

“Is there anything you’d like to ask me before I go to treat my other patients?” Doctor Kasal asked in a kind voice.

“Yes!” She said, suddenly remembering little Pearl. “Has a little girl visited at all since I’ve been here?”

“Oh you must be referring to Pearl? Yes, she’s barely left your bedside. She’s you little sister, I take it?” He answered.

“Sort of, yeah. Is she ok?” Maya asked worriedly, being painfully aware that she was Pearl’s only family.

“Oh yeah, she’s fine,” he answered. “That lawyer spent most of his time here with her.”

“Nick!” She felt her heart jolt for a moment before sinking again. “Is he here?” (I need to talk to him!)

“No, he went about 2 hours ago. Something about a famous magician wanting to see him about a defense. He also said the hospital should call him if you woke up…. Anyway, I have patients to see, and I need to make that phone call, so my advice is plenty of bed rest and sleep,” he said without pausing. “Good day to you Ms Fey."

“Oh, Um ok… Thank you…” she muttered, feeling preoccupied thinking about Phoenix. (He kept his promise and looked after Pearly for me! He always saves me, again and again. Why am I so helpless all the time? And why did I have to realize I loved him… Things were so much simpler before…)

“Mystic Mayaaaaaaaaaaa!” Maya was distracted by this sudden noise as Pearl ran into the room.

“Pearly! Are you okay?” she asked giving Pearl a timid hug, as it still hurt quite a lot to move. “Hey, it’s okay, don’t cry! I’m here now.”

“I-I thought you were going to d-die” she said before a fresh batch of tears came.

“ No! Of course not! I’m fine now. Did Nick look after you alright?”

“Oh yes! Mr Nick was great! He fed me instant noodles every night, and one night we even had Fish and Chips!”

(Why doesn’t that even surprise me?) “So you’re okay now then? No more crying?”

“No, I feel ok now,” said Pearl, sniffing loudly. “Mr Nick will get here soon. That nice doctor called him when I was still outside. Did you tell him you love him yet?”

“I didn’t, no.” Maya paused. “I'm afraid things aren’t always that simple, Pearly.” Maya looked down with her long hair covering her eyes.

“Mystic Maya? Wouldn’t it be better to know if he loves you back than wonder forever? But of course, he will love you back because you two are meant to be together!”

Hearing Pearl say this just made Maya hurt more.

“Pearly? How can you know that for sure? You don’t know the way that things work in the real world. People don’t always love each other back…” she paused. “At least not in the same way that you love them…”

“Well, they should!” Pearl said, unable to think of anything to say back. “Anyway, Mystic Maya, you should get some sleep now! So you can look pretty for Mr Nick.”

“Ok Nurse Pearly, I’ll do as you say then.” Maya smiled for the first time in days at being bossed around by an eight year old, then she settled down to sleep for a few hours.

……….

Once again Maya’s eyes slowly opened, this time to be greeted by Phoenix’s warm smile.

“Maya! You’re awake!” He said.

“Nick? Is that you?” Maya replied as her eyes adjusted to the sunlight that shone in through the window.

“Yeah, it’s me. How are you feeling?”

“Great, thanks,” she said, wincing as she propped herself up on her pillow. “How long have you been there?”

“A while, but I didn’t want to wake you. You looked so peaceful.” Phoenix smiled but then looked sad again.

“What’s wrong?” Maya asked him.

“Maya? I-I’m so sorry, this is all my fault!” He put his head in his hands “If I hadn’t made you run out the back entrance with me, none of this would have happened…”

“N-no! It’s not your fault!” (Well, not very much.)

“If you hadn’t taken that bullet for me…” Phoenix said trailing off.

“So it’s my fault then, for taking the bullet. Don’t blame yourself.”

“It’s ok Maya. It’s ok if you hate me. I hate me too right now. I-I’ve been so selfish!” Phoenix stood up and faced away from her. “And because of that, I nearly lost you… Again…”

“Hate you?” Maya said quietly. “I guess you never heard what I said before I passed out then?”

Phoenix sat down on the chair next to Maya’s bed.

(Why isn’t he saying anything? I’m putting my heart on the line here! Can’t he see that? Say something!)

“Nick?”

“Sorry… I don’t know what to say.” He looked down. “What I feel for you… It’s complicated.”

“Complicated? What do you mean?”

Just at that moment, the Steel Samurai theme started to play, and suddenly Maya realized it was Phoenix’s phone.

“Sorry, better answer that.” He accepted the call and walked out the room.

(What happened to having your mobile turned off in hospitals? Way to keep a girl hanging Nick… Why did I bring up what I said anyway? I’ll only get my heart broken…)

Phoenix walked back into the room after about five minutes.

“Good news! I just got a new client. He just rang to tell me he was accepting my offer,” Phoenix said grinning.

(As he clearly isn’t planning on explaining his “complicated” feelings towards me, I’d better get something that’s been bothering me off my mind.)

“Um Nick? How long was I in that coma for? Pearly mentioned that you’d fed her for what seemed like four days or something...” she asked.

“Got it in one; you were in a comma for roughly four days… the doctors were worried you might not wake up at all. I-I just know what I would have done if…” Phoenix trailed off unable to contemplate the thought.

Maya blushed “Hmm… well, you don’t need to think about that. I’m ok now, that’s all that matters”.

All of a sudden Phoenix grabbed Maya into a tight hug. Maya hugged him back hard even though it was painful for her. She felt herself turn bright red. (Wow! Nick smells really nice!) After a moment or so (much to Maya’s regret) Phoenix pulled out off the hug and Maya saw that he too, had turned red.

“Sorry,” he said, blushing. “I hope I didn’t hurt you… It’s just…” Once again he trailed off.

(Is he not capable of finishing of his sentences or something?) “No it’s ok, I understand.” (Do I?)

“Anyway, um, I really should get going now. I have to meet my new client again. I’ll be back later, though.” (I don’t think things could get any more awkward right now.) “Bye.” He waved and left before she had a chance to say anything else.

Phoenix walked quickly down the corridor. (I feel really bad! But what was I supposed to say to her? How I felt? I can’t! Not when I don’t even know that myself! Besides, it’s true, I have to go and meet my new client.)

On the way to the detention center, Phoenix decided to stop off at the office. Still trying to figure out his feelings for Maya, he wasn’t paying attention, and was even more shocked when he opened the door to find someone already sitting in his chair with their back to him.

Thanks for all the coments (finally!) i've decided to continue with the story for a few more chapters.

Chapter5

“Argh!” Phoenix yelled out in shock before realizing what he’d done. (Help! Now they’ll know I’m here!)

Slowly the chair wheeled around to reveal...

“Pearls? No, wait... Mia? W-what are you doing here?” he burbled in shock.

“Hey Phoenix, long time no see! When I said we’d meet again someday, I didn’t think it would be this soon.”

“Chief! It’s always good to see you, but I gotta ask… Why are you here?”

“Sit down, Phoenix.” She gestured towards the chair that sat opposite his desk where Maya usually sat.

“Well, actually, I have somewhere I need to be right now, so I’ll just be-”

“Sit down,” Mia said, cutting him off. “Do you think I’d have gotten Pearl to run all the way over here if it wasn’t urgent?”

“Pearl ran here, again? So… um, what did you want to talk about then?” (As if I don’t know!)

“Maya, of course! Phoenix… I’m pretty sure you’re aware of her… feelings for you.”

“Um-”

“Let me finish. Now, if you feel the same about her, I wouldn’t do anything to stop you guys from starting a relationship. You’ve known each other over three years now, you care about her a lot and would never do anything to hurt her… deliberately,” Mia continued.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Phoenix said, feeling a tinge of annoyance.

“It means that I don’t think you’re sure of feelings for her, and if you started a relationship now you may only end up breaking her heart!” Mia paused “She’s been through so much recently. I know that most of the time she acts as though everything’s fine, but on the inside… The incident with our mother… it hurt her a lot.”

“I know. She’s putting a brave face for Pearls. It’s just hard to tell her how I feel about her… when I don’t even know myself. I know I keep leaving her hanging all the time, but what am I supposed to do? Lie? Because I can’t do that to her. She deserves better… better than me, anyway…”

“Phoenix, If Maya had to love anyone, I’d rather it was you than anyone else. At least with you, I know you really do care about her.”

(Gee, thanks Chief!)

“I just want you to carefully consider it before rushing into anything,” Mia said, giving Phoenix a stern look.

“I-I will, the last thing I want to do is hurt Maya… again.” Phoenix said, looking down into his lap.

“Again? Phoenix, I know that you’ve been involved with a few incidents where Maya got hurt, but in all of them you’ve been the person saving her, not hurting her. I didn’t come here to tell you to stay away from her; I came to tell you to carefully consider your feelings so neither of you two gets hurt.”

“Thanks Mia… And I will. Think about it before acting, I mean.”

“Good, because you’ve been known to make… rash decisions before, like with the bridge.”

“I did that to save Maya! You can’t hold that against me!” Phoenix yelled incredulously.

“I’m not, I’m just saying you could have died, and you didn’t exactly stop and think about that before going. All I’m saying is, don’t do that here. Think about both you and Maya first.”

“When I ran across that burning bridge… all I could think about was… Maya… and how she was trapped across on the other island. There was no time to question what could happen; all I cared about was… Maya.”

“I know whatever you choose to do will be the right decision. It’s like I said before; 'Just leave it to Phoenix, he’ll fix everything.'”

Phoenix smiled, but couldn’t think of anything else to say to her except, “Thanks, Chief.”

Mia smiled back. “I hope to see you soon, Phoenix,” and within 30 seconds Pearl stood before Nick.

“Oh! Hey Mr Nick! Mystic Mia told me to channel her; she said she needed to talk to you about something important. Was it Mystic Maya?” Pearl asked.

“Um, yeah, kind of…” Phoenix answered with his mind on other things.

“Oooh! Are you two getting together?” Pearl began jumping up and down and clapping.

“Well… Um… I don’t know?” (What do I say? I know how much this means to Pearls. I can’t get her hopes up too much can I?) “Er, Pearls, I have a lot of work to do right now. Do you want me to drop you off anywhere? Because I’m very busy.”

“Well, it’s really boring at Kurain. Can you drop me off at the hospital?”

“Sure, of course I can.” (And the hospital is exciting how?)

Phoenix dropped Pearl off outside Maya’s room, trying very hard to keep out of sight.

“Aren’t you coming in to see Mystic Maya?” Pearl said suspiciously.

“No, sorry, I can’t. I’ve, um, got a lot of work to do, like I said.”

Phoenix began to walk away but turned around as he felt a strong impact hit his back.

“Pearl! What was that for?” Phoenix yelled. (Boy can she hit hard for a kid!)

“You’re avoiding Mystic Maya, and that’ll make her sad!” Pearl yelled back.

“No, no, of course I’m not!” (Quick Phoenix, think of a decent excuse!) “You see, I didn’t want to tell you this but... I guess I’m gonna have to. The thing is, the reason I’m not going into see Maya is…” (Umm…) “Because I’m… going out to buy her a special present. But it’s a surprise, so don’t tell Maya I was here, ok?”

It was a lame lie, but Phoenix knew Pearl would believe it, as it was what she wanted to hear. (Whew, lucky her Magatama doesn’t seem to be working right now!)

Pearl grinned. “So you and Mystic Maya really are getting together! What are you getting her? A ring? Are you getting married? Can I be a bridesmaid?”

“W-what? N-no!” (How did she jump to so many conclusions so quickly?) “It’s not a ring. It’s a secret, I can’t tell you right now. See you later Pearls!”

And with that Phoenix turned around and walked off before Pearl had the chance to argue some more. (Looks like I’ll have to skip my trip to the detention center and get Maya a present then... and an expensive one so I don’t have Pearls on my back!)

……….

After her conversation with Phoenix, Pearl ran into Maya’s room excitedly, causing Maya to wake up.

“Oh, hey Pearly!” she said sitting up.

“Hi Mystic Maya!” Pearl replied with a huge grin on her face. “How do you feel today?”

“Loads better today, thanks.” Maya eyed Pearl
suspiciously. “What are you so happy about then?”

“Nothing!” she said quickly. “I’m not, I’m as happy as I usually am.”

“Um, Ok then? Well anyway, I have some good news! The doctor said I was well enough to go home! I thought I’d be stuck here for ages with nothing to do but sleep and watch re-runs of “The steel Samurai”, but apparently, because I was in a coma for so long, the wound healed while I was asleep!” Maya smiled. “I can’t wait! Did you tape all the episodes of the Pink Princess for me Pearly?”

“Of course I did! Yay! This is such good news; I’ve been so bored and lonely up in Kurain! This day’s turning out really well! First Mr. Nick buying you a present, and now you’re coming home!” Pearl clapped her hand to her mouth, realizing what she’d just said.

“Nick’s buying me a present?” Maya asked.

“Um, no.”

Maya raised her eyebrow. "Why’d you say he was then, huh?”

“Well ok, he is. But you can’t tell him I told you! He said it’s a secret and you couldn’t find out! Please don’t tell him!” Pearl whined.

“Hmm, ok then, I won’t say anything, your secret is safe with me." (Nick’s buying me a present? I wonder what it could be? I love surprises!)

“How are you going to get home though?” Pearl asked.

“Well I guess I could always ask Nick… But I don’t want to seem as though I’m being too pushy… No, actually, I’ll just get a taxi instead.”

(Hmm, I bet if Mr. Nick offered a lift, Mystic Maya would accept!) Pearl thought to herself.

“Um, Mystic Maya? Is it ok if I just go to the little girls' room for a second?” she asked.

“Yeah, of course.”

Pearl ran out of the room and down the corridor. She pulled out her mobile phone and scrolled down to “Mr. Nick” on her contact list and sent a message saying:

“Mistic Maya is gowing home toodai”

“That ought to give a hint,” thought Pearl. She pressed send and went back to Maya's room.

“Hey Pearly, guess what Nick just texted me! He wants me to get a taxi to see him at the office at 8:00 tonight! And he said I should come alone! Do you mind if I get a taxi to take you back to Kurain later?”

“No, of course not!” Pearl smiled to herself. (Yes! My plan worked perfectly!)

“Um, Pearly, do you mind if I, um, start packing and stuff? You know, so I’m, like, ready to go?” Maya asked. (I need to get ready!)

“No, of course not, I’ll just find the play area!” Pearl answered. (I’ll bet Mystic Maya wants to get ready for Mr Nick!) she thought.

Pearl waved goodbye and left the room, and Maya began to pack quickly. When she was done she looked at her watch. (It’s nearly 7:30! I can’t be late; maybe I should call a taxi. Hmm… but it only takes, like, 10 minutes to get there. I don’t want to be too early either. I’m so nervous! Ok Maya, calm down, deep breaths…)

Maya waited until it was 7:40pm before cracking and catching a taxi over to Wright and Co. Law Offices.

It made me laugh how Phoenix has got to get Maya a present now, any lie to stop Pearl from slapping him round the face! Good job can't wait until the next chapter.

Before Maya entered the office, she paused just outside the door. She had never felt so nervous before! (But why? It’s not even a date! Is it?)

Once again, a battle went on inside Maya’s head:

“He must like you!” said the happier sounding voice. “Finally, what you’ve been waiting for!”

“He doesn’t like you in that way! Hello? Mia’s little sister!” the doubtful voice reminded her.

“Mia would be ok with it! You know she would. In fact, I bet she’d be happy for you!”

“So? Doesn’t mean anything, Maya. Just cause’ she’d be ok with it doesn’t mean he would! He likes you as a friend”

“Do 'friends' ask you to come and see them late at night alone?!”

Maya sighed; she wasn’t getting anywhere, no further to the truth than a moment ago. She realized there was no way of knowing how he felt without asking him straight out, and the first step would be going inside like he had asked her to. She timidly pushed the door open.

“H-hello? Nick, are you there?” She called out.

“Maya!” Phoenix smiled. “You’re early! I wasn’t expecting you for about 10 minutes!”

“Oh sorry, should I come back in 10 then?” She laughed, sounding more relaxed than she felt.

Maya walked into the middle of the room to get a proper look at what Phoenix was doing; she recognized the room, as she had been her many times before, but she always felt it had a different atmosphere at night. She thought back to the night when she had entered the office to find Mia dead. It had been 3 years since she had met Phoenix because he had defended her when she was accused of murdering Mia. He’d stuck by her and gotten to the truth, and she was eternally grateful to him for that. (Maybe that’s why I love him? He’s everything I’ve ever wanted. He’s kind; he’s caring and cute on top of all that!).

“So um, what is all of this?” she asked. She noticed Phoenix had placed a TV in the middle of the room in front of the sofa, and there were two bowls of popcorn.

“Oh… Well, it was supposed to be a surprise… Kind of, well... it would have been, but then you got here early, so it’s not really finished. Anyway, all of this…” He gestured around the room. “Is for later, if you’ll just step through here…” He pointed towards the door.

Maya walked through into Phoenix’s office. There was a small table for two people laid out with a red table cloth and silver cutlery. The room had been decorated beautifully with purple and red candles, setting the room perfectly for a romantic dinner for two.

“Wow, Nick! This is… amazing!” Maya exclaimed. (This must have taken ages to set up!)

“Thanks, Maya.” Phoenix paused. “I-I thought you deserved a treat after what happened at the bar. I know it doesn’t make up for how selfish I was, but... I wanted to try anyway…”

“You don’t have anything to be sorry about though…” (I wish he’d quit blaming himself, it just makes me feel bad!) “Anyway,” Maya said, trying to lift the mood. “What’s for dinner? Do I smell burgers?”

“Yeah! They’re nearly cooked. Only about a minute or so until they’re done,” Phoenix answered.

“Fantastic! It’s been days since I last had a good meal…” (Or a good burger.) “So, um, what are we watching later then?”

“Ah, where would be the surprise in that?” Phoenix said with mysterious glint in his eye.

Maya’s jaw dropped “What? That’s not fair!” she gave Phoenix a playful push.

“Hey, I thought you liked surprises!” He answered with a smug grin on his face.

“I do… I’m just very changeable!” Maya answered. (He’s so cute when he’s smug!)

“So you won’t be wanting this then?” He held up a small box that looked as though it contained jewellery of some sort and grinned cockily. “Ah well, too bad… maybe I’ll just keep it for myself…”

“That’s not fair either! Go on, give it here. You know you want to!” Maya laughed, attempting to grab it out of his hands.

“No, no, sorry, guess you’ll have to wait till later,” Phoenix said with a disapproving look on his face, but then smiled and put the package back in his pocket. He glanced over. “Looks like the burgers are done!” He shovelled them onto the plates and poured them both a glass of champagne.

“Ooh, champagne? How much did this meal cost, Nick?” Maya worried once again. She knew Phoenix didn’t have a lot of money.

“Meh, it’ll be ok. I just got a new client after all, I’m representing him tomorrow in fact!” (I sure hope he’s rich… and he pays me!) “Besides, I don’t really mind spending money…” (Who am I kidding?) “…And anyway, this is supposed to be a treat to say sorry, so I don’t really mind.”

Maya tucked into her burger. Nick looked down at his plate. (These burgers sure are big, it should be a struggle to finish this off.) He looked back up. Maya had already eaten half of her burger.

“Wow Maya! You ate that fast!” Phoenix exclaimed.

“Yeah well, I’m hungry!” (And nervous!) She thought.

Phoenix picked up his burger and began to eat, but was disturbed rather quickly by Maya talking.

“Nick? Why did you do all this?” She asked suddenly.

“T-to say sorry,” he stammered back.

“No, but really… There must be another reason, It’s nothing to do with… what we were talking about earlier, is it?”

“W-what?” Phoenix said, shocked. “Um-”

“Never mind!” Maya said hurriedly. “It doesn’t matter.” (Why? Why did I just bring it up like that? This is sooo awkward now!) “So, who’s this new client you were talking about earlier?” She asked quickly, changing the subject.

“Oh,” Phoenix said, thrown of by the sudden change. “Just some famous Magician guy, Zak Gramayre, you heard of him?” he asked, taking a bite of his burger.

“Gramyre? Zak Gramayre? Are you kidding?” Maya’s jaw once again dropped. “Oh my God! I love his show! The Three Gramayre’s: Zak, Valant and Thalassa! This is awesome! Maybe I can help you with the case?”

“Wow Maya, they’re only magicians! How can you get so excited?” Phoenix asked. (I knew she liked children’s programs, but surely she must know all the stunts are illusions.) “Anyway, all’s not so happy right now, recently a guy named Magnifi Gramayre was murdered, and they think it was Zak who did it.”

“Really?” She looked down glumly.

“Don’t worry about it, though!” (Better reassure her) “It’ll be ok; after all, I’ve never lost a case before! Everything will work out in the end!”

“Hey, it’s ok, I’m not a kid. I know bad stuff happens in real life, Nick! In fact… I know that better than most people do…” Maya replied. (Once again, he’s implying I’m some immature kid! I’ll show him!)

“Yeah, I guess you do.” (Better steer away from the subject of what happened with her mother recently!) Phoenix looked up and got a proper look at Maya. “Wow! I just noticed, you’re not in you medium outfit!”

“Oh, yeah, well… I don’t wear that all the time”

(You don’t? This is news to me, It’s all I’ve ever seen you in!) “I guess you don’t, well, either way… That top looks really nice on you,” he said hurriedly before blushing furiously.

“Oh thank you, I’ve had this for ages. I just don’t wear it a lot.” (Who am I kidding, I spent like an hour putting together this outfit! It took him that long to notice?)

She was wearing a pink strapless top, but had still worn her Magatama necklace, and paired it with black skinny leg jeans. Very far from her usual costume.

Image

“Phew! Well, I’m stuffed,” Phoenix said, adjusting his belt slightly and leaning back on his chair.

“I know, yeah, me too!” She agreed after her third burger. “So, are you ready to surprise me with this film you’re being so secretive about yet?”

“Yeah, why not?” Phoenix got up and took the plates they had been eating on over onto his desk. Maya joined him in standing up and followed him into the room outside Phoenix’s office.

“Ooh, popcorn!” Maya exclaimed excitedly.

“I thought you were full?”

“Nick, do you ever learn? There’s always room for popcorn, especially when you’re watching a movie!”

“Ah yes, I forgot about the bottomless pit that is your stomach.”

“Cheek!” Maya laughed, picking up a cushion and throwing it at him.

Phoenix laughed back and bent down to put the DVD into the machine. After a moment, a menu screen loaded, revealing what movie Phoenix had got her.

“Wow Nick! The third Pink Princess movie… Wait, hasn’t this only come out in Japan?” she asked after pausing to think for a moment.

“Yeah, but I imported a translated copy,” he answered.

“Why did you spend all that money just on me?” (I don’t mean to sound ungrateful or anything, but I know he doesn’t have a lot of money!)

“Because… well, because, I’d do anything for you. That’s why, you and Pearls… you’re like… my family.”

(Me and Pearly? This isn’t good! I'm getting really mixed signals here; one second I think this is a date, the next it’s a family gathering.)

Phoenix joined Maya in sitting down to watch the movie.

(Trust Nick to choose an Action film! I wanted to curl up to him like I’m scared, I can’t do that now… or can I?)

About 20 minutes into the movie, Phoenix got up to replenish the popcorn and Maya went to the toilet. When she came back, Phoenix was already sitting down.

(I bet I can get away with sitting a little closer to him now without being to obvious!)

She sat down and, as Phoenix didn’t complain about how little room he had left of the sofa, she stayed put.

An hour passed, and Maya looked at her watch.

(Wow, it’s getting really late now! It’s nearly 10.30; at this rate, I won’t be able to catch a taxi or a train out of here.)

Phoenix yawned and stretched his arm up around the back of where Maya was sitting. Maya shivered with excitement.

“Are you cold?” Phoenix asked, getting the wrong idea. He pulled her towards him with his arm around her.

(No, but I’m not going to correct him!) He leaned forward and poured them both their 3rd glass of champagne. Maya was beginning to feel very tired right now, but they continued with the movie none the less.

After another 45 minutes, despite being incredibly comfortable tucked under Phoenix’s arm, she started wondering when the movie was going to end. (How long is this? I’m so tired and I want to talk to Nick! I can’t do that when the film's on, can I?)

30 minutes more passed, and finally the movie credits rolled. Phoenix had a headache and felt very sluggish.

(Oh great! I’m due in court tomorrow, and I’m going to have hangover!) “Well, that was a very long movie,” he said drowsily.

“I know,” Maya replied. “I was beginning to wonder if it was ever going to end.” She paused, realizing how tactless she had been. “Not that I didn’t enjoy it or anything though!” she added. “…Nick… I just wanted to say… Thanks for all this, I’ve had a really good time tonight.”

“Me too, I care about you so much, I just wanted… to show you that…” Phoenix eyes looked out of focus a little, as if he was staring at something, but Maya couldn’t see what it was.

“I-I love you Nick, you’re everything to me. You’ve always been there for me, whatever happened, even if it meant putting you out of you comfort zone…”

Maya leaned in and kissed Phoenix. She didn’t feel him pulling away, so she continued, making each kiss a little longer and more passionate. After a moment she felt him begin to kiss her back, whether it was because he’d had a little too much to drink or because he truly loved her back, Maya did not know; all she cared about was how right Phoenix’s lips felt upon hers. Phoenix and Maya spent several long minutes embracing on his sofa before Phoenix eventually pulled away.

“Maya…” He said as he’d felt her begin to take of his jacket and shirt. “I don’t know if I can, I’m… well, I don’t know if I’m ready or not…”

“Oh… well, I understand, kissing’s fine with me!” She pulled him into another passionate kiss. (Not ready? How can he feel this way about me and not be ready? I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long, I just don’t get that…)

She cuddled back up underneath Phoenix arm once again, mulling over everything. It took her a moment to realize. Then she understood what she had to do...

Chapter7

Phoenix awoke suddenly with a piercing headache.

“Ah my head!” He said up groggily and noticed Maya’s head resting on his knee. (How much did I have to drink last night?) He gently moved Maya’s head over, grabbed the blanket from his chair, and covered her with it. She almost stirred but then settled back into her peaceful sleep.

He quickly walked over to the mirror he had hung in his office for emergencies like this one before gasping at the sight of his hair.

“Whoa! My hair… it looks so… flat!” Phoenix grabbed some hair gel, rubbed it in, and quickly styled his hair. (Not as spiky as usual, but it will do, I guess.) He tiptoed to the door and gently closed it, making very little sound.

……….

Phoenix slowly opened the door to his office and saw that it had barely changed since he had left it that morning. He had though, after the events of the trail that had taken place that day. He had returned to the office a broken man.

“Come on in, Trucy,” he called. A small girl of only eight years walked through the door. “Um… Is there…. anything I can get you?” He picked up one of Pearl's coloring books that she had left behind last time they had all been at the office together. Now all he could see were painful memories of what once was. “Do you like coloring?” he asked her kindly.

She nodded.

"Good. Well, um, could you just color for a moment while I go through to my office?" (Where’s Maya? I was kinda hoping she would still be here. I need to talk to her.) He looked around, as if hoping for her to jump out from behind his desk. Eventually, he spied a small folded piece of paper. He picked it up and began to read:

“Dear Nick,

I’m so sorry this has to be in letter form but I know it would be impossible to say any of these things to your face. That would be too painful. I’m leaving to go back and live in Kurain for a while. Staying here is too painful for me and I just can’t do it anymore.
I love you and I think I always have, ever since I met you, though it took me a while to realize that I did. But last night made me realize, no matter how long I love you, you may never love me back. You tried so hard last night, but I could tell that’s all it was; you wanted to make me happy, and yet I know that if I stay any longer we’ll both get hurt.
Please don’t think that I’m running away from my problems, because that isn’t what I’m doing. I will return some day… just when I feel… ready. And I know we’re both sure of our feelings for one another. Oh, and please don’t feel obliged to wait for me. If “Mrs. Wright” (Haha, get it?) comes along, don’t hold back because of me.

Love you, from Maya x”

Phoenix slammed the letter down in frustration and sat down at his desk. All of this had almost been too much to take in one day. But this? This was getting too difficult. He stuffed the letter into his pocket.
(I can’t lose her! Anything else I can just about take, but not her leaving!)

He walked back through his door to where Trucy sat coloring.
“Hey Trucy, how are you?” he asked, kneeling down to her level. “The thing is, well… I have somewhere I need to be right now and I need to be there fast. I can either bring you with me or you can stay here, what would you prefer?”

“Can I…” Trucy considered a moment. “Um… come with you?”

“Ok that’s fine but I need to get there really fast, ok? So we may have to run, are you ok with that?”

“Yes,” Trucy nodded.

Phoenix grabbed Trucy’s hand and ran out of Wright and Co. Law Offices.

……….

By the time Phoenix and Trucy got to the station, they were very out of breath.

“Must… get… car… soon… So… tired…” he panted, leaning over to support himself on his knees.

“Come on!” Trucy said. “That was nothing! If you were a magician, you could have teleported yourself here instead of running!”

“Um… yeah… right…” Phoenix was still very out of breath and felt as though he was having a small cardiac arrest, but he kept going nonetheless. The discomfort he felt at the moment would be worth it if it meant Maya staying.

They half ran, half walked to the main platform, navigating their way through the station car park, eventually getting to the very crowded platform. Phoenix scanned the area, looking for Maya.

(Come on! Where is she? You’d expect her to stand out a little more with that costume she wears all the time.)

He finally spotted her sitting at a bench near the train. He heard the announcer microphone say:

“The next train heading through the mountains leaves at 7:30pm”
Phoenix looked down at his watch and saw it was 7:20. (Great! I have 10 minutes to convince her to stay! Good luck with that, Phoenix!)

“Maya!” he called out through the crowds. She turned and saw him. He had expected her to turn, but she sat where she was on the bench.
He walked over with Trucy still with him. “Maya…” he sat down next to her.

“I didn’t want you to come… It would just make this harder…” she said, sadly looking down.

“Exactly. I know you don’t really want to go, and I don’t want you to leave… So why are you?” he asked her.

“I-I have to. You don’t understand… It’s not your fault, but I know you don’t have the same feelings for me that I have for you…”
“Maya… I do! What about everything I did last night? How else can I prove it to you?”

“You can’t Nick, I think you forget… I too have a Magatama. I know you felt unsure of you feelings for me last night and even if you truly do have romantic feelings for me, they’re not as strong as mine are for you.”

“…” Phoenix paused. “Please Maya, please don’t go.” He felt as though his world had come crashing down around him. When he though about how he felt yesterday he seemed like the luckiest man alive, now he’d nearly lost everything.

“Nick… If we truly are meant to be together… Then we will… If it’s destiny. But I can’t start a relationship with someone who is unsure of their feelings for me. The last thing I want to do is ruin our friendship.”

Nick looked down at the ground, finally accepting there was no way to change her mind but that didn't make things any easier.

“Besides,” she continued after Nick had said nothing, “It’s not as if I’ll never be coming back.” She had a little smile on her face at last.

“When will you be coming back?” He said sounding almost desperate.

“When it feels… right.” She paused. “Oh, and like I said in my letter, if “Mrs. Wright” comes along, don’t feel like you have to wait or anything.”

(Trust Maya to make a joke at a time like this!)

She got up, and he joined her there, standing on the platform.

“Goodbye Nick… for now,” she added with a wink. She kissed him squarely on the lips and pulled her suitcase towards the train.

But Phoenix ran along after her and pulled her into a more passionate kiss. Maya looked happy and smiled at him.

“Bye Maya,” he said, turning the kiss into a hug. “I’ll miss you. Oh, and just to let you know… I’ll wait… no matter how long. It will be worth it.”

Maya finally boarded her train, and Phoenix was left on the platform with Trucy next to him. He had been so caught up in the moment he had almost forgotten she was there.

“Is she going to be my new mummy?” the little girl asked.

“I hope so, one day…”

“But not now?”

“No she’s going away for a while, hopefully not to long though…”

“So are you my new daddy then?” she said smiling up at him.

“I guess so… yeah.”

He looked down into his suit pocket and pulled out the small box from the day before and opened it up. Inside was a small silver ring with a shining amethyst set into it. (Someday Maya… someday.) He put it back into his pocket and turned to look at Trucy. She too had lost so much today; he felt as though he had a lot in common with her, despite her being an eight year old girl. (I may not have Maya at the moment but I have to be strong… for Trucy, no matter how hard it gets. She needs me right now… and, well, I need her too.)

The final chapter? :maya:

That is such a sweet ending and it fits in with the Apollo Justice timeline. Phoenix just needs some time to think things over and he has Trucy now as well. Because of this i can see Maya returning in GS5 (hopefully).

Also his ring has an amethyst set in it which makes me think back to when, in case 3-5 Maya got jealous of Elise's amethyst in her staff and told Phoenix to find her one.
I love the "new mummy" reference too that Trucy always says :minuki:
It was a really good ending!

Ah, this is pretty good! :edgy: I'm not usually a fan of Maya/Nick, but I found this rather sweet. I think the best part, in my opinion, was how "realistic" you made the character's feelings: Phoenix's uncertainty and Maya's realization that perhaps they need to wait. I thought it was well done. And of course, I want a sequal :franny:

I did notice a few spelling and grammatical errors (mostly, you kept spelling 'trial' 'trail'), but those obviously can be corrected. My only other suggestion is that, whenever you have the characters thinking, instead of using parentheses (), I would italicize. It makes your writing look a little cleaner. You can also use this technique when Maya is arguing with herself, as I used the same method when I had Franziska argue with herself in When the Wall Crumbles. Other than that, I liked it. :keiko: Good job!

Thanks for all the comments guys! (and thanks for the review Cealestis) I really love getting comments!

I've started writing the epilogue, so far i've writen about 1 1/2 pages i should be able to post it soon.

I'm adding a link to the the Fanfic on the original (1st) post so that it's easier to read that way rather than scrolling down all the time. It's at "OBJECTION - a finfiction archive".

Maya Fey stared up at the building that had changed so much since she had last laid eyes on it. It’s so different now, I wonder if he will be too? Even the outside had changed in appearance, the sign now said “Wright Anything agency” instead of “Wright and Co. Law offices” and the building was cream instead of gray like it had been before. If this is what the outside's like, what’s it going to be like inside? Not that she cared much either way; all she cared about was him.

She had missed him so much she could barely wait to go inside to see him, but mingled with that desire was fear. Fear that he had changed, or worse: that he had moved on. What if he has? I can’t exactly criticize him, can I? I left him for 7 years! Anything could have happened in that time! He could have fallen in love, started a family, anything…“But if you don’t go inside how will you ever know for sure?” a small voice in Maya’s head asked.

She pushed open the door gently and walked up the stairs.

Hasn’t changed much so far... She glanced around on the bare brick walls and remembered the last time she'd walked down these stairs, for what she thought might be the last time. Maya paused at the door, feeling pensive. Deep breaths Maya, deep breaths. She glanced down at her outfit and straightened it out, took one more deep breath, and gently knocked the door.

“Come in,” A calm voice replied.

Maya pushed the door open slowly, not sure what to expect. Inside was an incredibly messy cluttered room, full of what appeared to be magic tricks. Underneath all the clutter a piano was just barely visible. The walls were still the same color, but other than that the room was completely different to the way she’s left in 7 years ago. A man was standing on the other side of the room with his back to her. He seemed to be looking for a file or document. Maya’s eyes scanned for something that hadn’t changed and was pleased when they found a familiar looking plant.

“Charlie!” She accidentally blurted out without thinking.

“Yeah, Trucy looks after him now. If I’m honest I didn’t expect him to live this long…” The man said still sounding relaxed. “Is there anything I can help you with?” he asked, still not turning around to face her.

“Um, yeah…” she paused “I’m looking for someone.”

“Oh, and do you know their name?” He finally turned around to look at her. He was wearing a gray hooded top with dark blue jeans and a light blue beanie hat with the words “PaPa” written on it. When he saw her, he seemed to double up for a moment, losing his calm demeanor only for a second before it returned again.

Maya too saw something familiar about the man's face. Surely it couldn’t be…

“N-Nick? Is that you?”

“Wow, I haven’t been called that for… well, years I suppose.” He eyed her for a moment. “Maya?” he said, finally breaking the silence.

Maya was in a state of shock. Nick? He looks so different though, I expected him to have changed a bit but, well… not that much! They both stood in a stunned silence for a moment, staring at each over. This is so awkward! What do I say? Quick Maya, say something. Anything!

“You look um… really different.” Well that was lame Maya, state the obvious why don’t you?

“So do you, a lot…older”

“You, err, never used to dress that um… casually before”

“Yeah well, a lot’s changed since then.” He looked down sadly with his hat almost covering his eyes; he had a serious expression on his face.

Even his voice is different; he never used to be so serious…

“I… missed-” Phoenix began before being suddenly cut off by the noise of the door opening.

“Hi Daddy!” a Smallish teenage girl dressed strangely walked across the room. “I’m back from school! How was your day? Mine was great! I just passed the magic shop on the way home just now and they have lots of new tricks on sale for half price! So could you maybe spare some money for the-” She said all of this incredibly fast before noticing the look on Phoenix’s face. “Sorry Daddy! I didn’t realize we had company, I’ll just, um, go hang at Apollo’s flat for a while. Bye!”

“Yeah, you do that, Trucy,” Phoenix replied. He didn’t look angry, just mildly annoyed.

Maya didn’t feel angry; however, she was stunned into a complete silence. He has… a daughter? Maya couldn’t even analyze it. How? She wanted to ask, but she knew it would sound rude. Could she really criticize if he had moved on? But that “Trucy” girl looked like she was in her teens... He can’t have had her when he was 18?
“I suppose you’ll be trying to figure out how I have a daughter then?” Phoenix asked, snapping Maya out of her thoughts. When Maya didn’t answer he continued. “Trucy’s adopted; she came to live with me after my very last court case…”

“Hang on; you’re not an attorney anymore?”

“N-no, I’m not, they took my badge away for…” Phoenix seemed like he couldn’t complete the sentence. “…fabricating evidence.”

Maya’s jaw dropped “W-WHAT? YOU fabricated evidence?”

“Wh- no, of course I didn’t! I would never! You should know that I wouldn’t do that!” Phoenix burbled loudly “I was framed… Urgh! I was so… stupid, what was I thinking taking some random evidence when I didn’t even know where it came from! It was… too good to be true!”

“I-I’m sorry, I know how much you loved being a defense attorney…” she paused, “how long ago was that?”

“7 years ago, on the day that you left…”

“Why didn’t you tell me at the station?”

“I-I didn’t think it would make any difference to your decision.”

“You were wrong, it would have made all the difference! You needed a friend… and I abandoned you,” Maya turned away.

“You didn’t know...”

“I never asked… I could have at least asked you how everything was going… but I didn’t. I’m so selfish.”

“If I had told you about everything that had happened that day, yeah, maybe you would have stayed, but I didn’t want you to.”

“What?”

“If you’d chosen to stay, I wanted it to be because you knew that I loved you, not because you wanted to look after me,” Phoenix said. “None of what happened is you fault.”

“I should have gotten in contact with you a bit though, just to see if you were ok…”

“You never did phone.” He looked down. “I hoped you would.”

“That… That’s not true, I did once, when I needed to hear you voice.”

“That was… you? I always wondered, hoped that it was”

“But then when you answered I couldn’t say anything, it would hurt too much. I needed to be ready. Ready to see you again.”

“And… you are now?” Phoenix asked.

“Yes. Today, going to see you seemed like the right thing to do.” Maya replied.

“Was it?” he continued.

“I think it was.” She stopped for a moment. “I was… scared, though.”

Phoenix raised his eyebrows. “Scared of what?”

“That you’d be… different.”

“I am different.”

“Yes, but the differences, they’re only skin deep. I can tell now that you’re still the man I fell in love with all that time ago.”

“I love you Maya. Even after all this time, I never so much as looked at another woman while you were gone.”

“Prove it,” Maya said simply.

“Sorry, what? I can’t prove that I’ve never looked at other women...”

“Oh, I know that,” Maya grinned “Prove you love me.”

“H-How am I supposed to do that?” he stammered, sounding more like the old Phoenix every second.

“Have you forgotten everything in absence of being a lawyer? You should know, evidence is everything.”

Phoenix sized Maya up “Ok, I will.” He walked over to the stack of shelves which appeared to be full off books on magic; a few were left over from Phoenix’s defense attorney days. He pulled out a big pile of them.

What’s he doing? Getting some books out so he can read to me to show his love for me?
Then Maya saw was what hidden behind them. He pulled out a small wooden box.

"Trucy would never look behind all my old law books; she only ever reads the ones on magic. I knew no one would find it hidden there."

“What’s inside?” Maya asked excitedly.

“You really haven’t changed have you? Still very excitable, not that that’s a bad thing of course!” he laughed.

He opened the box, inside Maya could see a variety of objects. Firstly, he pulled out a small piece of paper with “Maya” written on it in red.

“The paper from your sisters murder case, I defended you for free because I couldn’t stand you going to prison for no reason.”

He then picked out a white bottle with writing on the side.

“Luminol testing spray from the SL-9 incident. You went back to Kurain, the only case I could bear to take was one of a girl named “Ema” who was in the same kind of situation as you had been previously. Other than that I couldn’t take any cases. I missed you too much.”

Next he showed her a small scrap of purple material.

“The piece of ripped clothing from the costume Ini wore when framing you, I defended you again. I knew that you weren’t capable of murder, I believed even when you didn’t yourself.”

He picked up and handed her another object, this time it was the bear puzzle from the Matt Engarde case.

“I asked Adrian if I could hold onto it when we last saw her at Lordly Tailor. I remember when I found out you’d been kidnapped. My sight, it started to fade because I couldn’t stand the idea of some body treating you badly and me not being able to stop them!”

Maya was speechless, she thought he was finished but he finally pulled out one final object, a beautiful purple stone from the end of Misty Fey's staff.

“Your mother's amethyst from the Elise Deauxnim murder case. Maya, I attempted to run across a burning bridge just to save your life…” he paused, “I’d… do anything for you…”

She really didn’t know what to say. The words were there but it was hard to get them out; her feelings were so strong she couldn’t express them with words.

She smiled, walked forward so she was a little closer to him and asked –

“What have you done for me lately?”

“This…” and pulled her towards him and kissed her.

At that moment they both realized how much they had missed each other. He finally pulled away.

He knew there was one more piece of conclusive evidence that showed exactly how strong his feelings were. He knew the time would come when he could present her with it. But it was not that moment. He very discreetly pushed he velvet box further into the hidden drawer and closed it, and thought to himself: One day you’ll be mine Maya. Then I can be who I once was, all that time ago.

Well there's the prologue! Hope everyone like it, it seemed like a good way to end but i am planning a new story which could involve phoenix and maya in it. I'll update when i know for sure

Loved it :maya:
Especially when he showed her all the evidence it made me think that there is actually a lot of Phoenix/Maya in the games when you group it all together.
I also liked how Trucy came in the room and Maya's reaction to her :minuki: "Hi Daddy!" i bet it was strange for her to hear Phoenix being called Daddy.
Maya's scream for Charlie the plant made me laugh and Phoenix saying that he didn't expect it to live that long. I have an old umbrella plant that we have had for about 16 years now. Its older than i am!
And of course i knew the old Phoenix would shine through with Maya being there.

Can't wait until the new story! Have fun writing it!

Thankyou! I really enjoy reading peoples comments and you've been regulary commenting throughout this story! yeah there is alot of evidence for the pairing and although it's in Franziska's hands there's also the card that Maya drew on (and that's gotta mean something right?)
I'll keep updating as i've already writien the first chapter of my next story. I'l probably post it in about a week (maybe less) so the epilogue has time to sink in.

Aw, that was nicely done :edgy: You did pretty well overall keeping the characters in character. You did well from trying to transition HoboPhoenix to the regular Phoenix that we remember when he saw Maya.

Despite its quickness, you also did well in transitioning Maya from being upset that Phoenix didn't "trust" her to them being able to reconcile.

I got your message... I will eagerly await your new fanfic. Should be interesting... what type of person would :franny: end up with? :D
