Ace Attorney Investigations: Turnabout Investigative Revelations

This is the prequel to Turnabout New Beginnings: http://www.forums.court-records.net/vie ... 11&t=20621

Yet this story does in fact contain some spoilers for that story, as does that one contains spoilers for this one. Just warning ahead of time, now this story takes place around late July of 2026, meaning right after the third case of Apollo Justice, which means it’s about one year before the events of Turnabout New Beginnings. And obviously, this fanfic contains spoilers for all the Ace Attorney games including Gyakuten Kenji 2, and as such I’ll be using the Japanese names for the new characters of that game as there are no English dub ones for them yet.

Chapter One: The Other Von Karma

“Remind me again why I’ve overseeing YOUR investigation, Agent Lang?” Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth grumbled as he tapped his fingers on his arm left arm. He was wearing his normal maroon colored jacket over his white shirt and black vest. His other hand was adjusting his white ruffles.

Interpol agent Shi-Long Lang laughed. “What’s wrong, are you board Mr. Prosecutor? Sis said you’d be cooperative in her absence.” His attire hadn’t changed much over the years. He still had the same dark brown jacket with a red and yellow dragon on the back, along with white trim. His shirt though was a black with a collar that was buttoned all the way up. His belt was black with a buckle that resembled the flag of Zheng Fa. His black pants had on either side a light red symbol that resembled the symbol on the flag of Zheng Fa, along with his black boots.

They were currently in the country of Borginia, in an office, overlooking the case. One of which they had been working on for over a year now, which involved the disappearance of Judge Hakari Mikagami and the smuggling of the Borginian Cocoons.

“I’ve been cooperative for over a year now, while the three of us have been working together. It’s not like Hakari Mikagami and I ever got along, after all she tried to have me replaced…” Edgeworth pointed out. “You’re still investigating those stolen Borginian Cocoons, even though one of the smugglers was caught back in America about a week or so ago. You still sure these events are linked?”

“An Interpol agent, Romein LeTouse, was killed during that incident. According to the report, the person who confessed didn’t account for the full lot of cocoons that were stolen.” Lang explained. “Some hotshot new Defense Attorney exposed this.”

“Apollo Justice, I’ve heard of him.” Edgeworth looked over the file in his hand that explained the case. “I’ve read he’s associated with a friend of mine, one of which I need to respond to soon. When are your people ever going to give me my cell phone back?” he growled.

“No one’s supposed to know we’re here investigating remember, Mr. Prosecutor?” Lang smirked. “Lang Zi says, ‘Echoes carry far in large caves, so best to remain silent to prey.’ So as long as we keep communications to a minimum, we won’t stir up anything.”

“But we already caught one group of the smugglers, the very same ones that assisted that blind piano player… Or rather fake blind boy.” Edgeworth sighed as he glanced over the report again. “Though honestly you never told me why you insisted Franziska and I assist you on this case?”

“Lang Zi says, ‘Only cooperate with those you can trust.’ And well look what happened to my last subordinate.” Lang frowned, narrowing his eyes as he recalled Shin-na. “I haven’t appointed anyone to replace her in all these years, afraid I’d repeat the process. I at one time offered to sis, but she insists on staying a prosecutor.”

“While Franziska likes to assist in these Interpol cases, she’s still a prosecutor at heart, much like her father.” Edgeworth looked down for a moment. “Though she’s been away almost a month now, ever since her sister called at such short notice with an emergency. Which was rather odd since they don’t get along very well…”

“What’s her older sister like?” Lang asked.

“Marie can be… Bitter. She’s one year older than myself.” Edgeworth groaned. “I usually didn’t spend much time with her, she was brought up in boarding school. She moved out on her own about 7 years after I was adopted by Manfred Von Karma. That was when she was pregnant with her daughter Cyrene.”

Lang looked like he was doing the math in his head. “So you’re saying she was barely 18 when she gave birth to that kid? That had to hit the Von Karma perfection.” He laughed.

“It did, that’s why she moved out.” Edgeworth pointed out. “Von Karma was furious, he chased off the father of her child, and insisted that Cyrene would be given ‘Von Karma’ as her last name. He didn’t have a boy to continue his name, so I think even if Marie had gotten married the same result would have happened.”

“Sis never speaks of her father really.” Lang rubbed his chin. “Was he that cruel of a man? I mean I know all the rumors…”

Edgeworth gripped on his own shoulder, looking down. “… He murdered my father and did everything to hide his crime for 15 long years. Then he took me under his wing and took me back to Germany with him. And honestly, he was cold to both his daughters. Franziska was only 2 at the time, and we became close I think due to this, as she confined more in me than her father.”

“Excuse me Agent Lang sir!” one of Lang’s investigation team members came over. “We received a message from Franziska Von Karma, she requests you both come immediately to Germany to assist her in an investigation.”

Investigation?” Lang arched his eyebrow.

“There’s been a kidnapping is all I was informed.” The agent said. “It took a while to get through the channels to reach us after all.”

“A kidnapping?” Edgeworth’s eyes widened. “But who was…?”

“I don’t know, I just know she wants you both there immediately.” The agent replied. “Interpol has prepared everything for your travel and has replacements for your investigation on hand.”

“Well Mr. Edgeworth, I think we need to take the next flight to Germany then.” Lang smirked. “Lang Zi says, ‘The pack that runs together, stays together.’ So let’s meet up with the other part of our pack.”

Edgeworth gave no comment, as they immediately headed for the airport. He and Lang had gotten along better than when they first met, but there were times they still remained annoyed with each other. The truth was he only agreed to this because of Franziska. His adoptive sister always held a special place in his heart, and despite what her father did, he still cared for her. When he first learned she was working with Interpol in these cases he did fear for her safety, as she did tend to get in over her head…

It wasn’t until the next day when their flight arrived in Germany. The very first thing Edgeworth and Lang did was take a Taxi to the home of Marie Von Karma.

“My German’s a little rusty do I need you to translate?” Lang asked when they got out of the vehicle and walked up to the house.

“Marie speaks English, even though it’s been a few years since I was last here.” Edgeworth said. “I wonder if this kidnapping is why Franziska was called out here…” he knocked on the door.

The door opened slowly. Inside stood a woman with white hair that had a few streaks of light blue, her eyes were blue and she had a long black dress on. The same signature ruffles that the Von Karmas wore she had, just below was a blue jewel similar to Franziska’s. Around the shoulders and down the sleeves were white. “Brother Edgeworth…” she growled, her glare was very cold. And just like her sister, she held a whip in her hands. It was identical to Franziska’s brown whip.

“Marie, good to see you again.” Edgeworth gave a bow. “This is Agent Lang from Interpol, Franziska sent word out to us to come right away?”

“Franziska?” Marie tugged on her whip. “She tried to contact you worthless fools 2 weeks ago. What took so long?”

“We’re in the middle of an undercover investigation.” Lang answered. “They couldn’t just pick up the phone and pull us out.”

Marie hissed and lashed her whip at Lang, who caught it.

“Yep, just like sis… Another Wild Mare.” Lang taunted.

“Franziska spoke of you… Disrespectful fool!” Marie growled. “I will not allow you to defile the house of Von Karma!” and with that she kicked him in the family jewels.

GAAHHH!!!” Lang fell over in pain, he hadn’t seen that coming.

Edgeworth sweatdropped for a moment, then turned to his adoptive sister. “… What happened?”

“None of your concern, Brother Edgeworth.” Marie glared. “After all you are no longer a member of the Von Karma household!”

Edgeworth crossed his arms. “Marie… You still hold that against myself and Franziska?”

“Franziska is foolishly young and far too easily influenced.” Marie turned away. “You on the other hand chose to assist and befriend the very man who destroyed father.”

“In case you forgot Marie, he was a murderer.” Edgeworth tried to keep his voice even. “I respected that man everyday for 15 long years, yet he clouded my eyes with a lie. Then not only was taking my father’s life enough, he tried to do away with me as well. And what about what he did to your fiancée…?”

SILENCE!” Marie smacked him with her whip.

“So are you going to let us in or not?” Edgeworth tapped his shoulder, he ignored the smack of the whip as he was well used to getting that treatment from Franziska. “Franziska called me out here, and I will help… As I think I already know what would be so urgent you’d get back in contact with us after all these years.”

… You know?” Marie looked like she was fighting off her tears.

“Only one thing would get you this upset, you’re trying to hide it by taking your anger out on us…” Edgeworth sighed. “Cyrene is the kidnap victim isn’t she?”

Marie had a look of pure rage as she tried to strike him with her whip, which Edgeworth caught her arm.

“Marie… He’s gone, you don’t have to hide your pain or emotions anymore.” Edgeworth spoke softly. “Be your true self and let it out, but don’t bottle it up like you used to be forced to do. That man taught me this.”

Tears floated down from Marie’s eyes. She broke out into a sob. “She’s my only daughter… What if she’s already…?”

“I vow to help in anyway I can. Now where is Franziska?” Edgeworth asked.

“She was at the Prosecutor’s Office, it’s the place Cyrene was kidnapped.” Marie explained. “Cyrene had just passed the bar exam and was receiving her badge when she was kidnapped. It was father’s old office that they believe she was abducted from.”

“Alright I’ll go there right away.” Edgeworth said. “Agent Lang, why don’t you remain here and look around? It’s possible these kidnappers may have been looking around the house prior to the kidnapping, maybe something will turn up?”

Lang groaned as he rose to his feet. “Alright Mr. Prosecutor. I’ll check the outside first.” He strolled around the corner when a loud howl was heard.

“Hey get off me you mutt!” Lang screamed as there was a loud crash.

“Oh I forgot to warn him about Phoenix…” Marie mused.

‘Suuuure you forgot…’ Edgeworth arched his eyebrow. “Phoenix is still your daughter’s guard dog? What is he 12 by now?”

“Just about 13, but he’s a stubborn dog at that.” Marie smirked. “Just because he can’t run like he used to, doesn’t mean he can’t bite when someone isn’t paying attention.”

‘And what if it was just someone passing by…?’ Edgeworth shook off the thought. “May I borrow your car? I obviously don’t have any transportation with me unless I call another taxi.”

“Fine, but if you even so much as dent it, you’re dead.” Marie tossed a pair of keys to him.

Edgeworth strolled over to her black BMW F11 and got inside. Once he turned the key the roar of the engine must had startled the dog Phoenix, as there was more barking… And more of Lang’s screaming and complaining.

Edgeworth drove off the car to his destination. He had spent much of his childhood here in Germany, with many visits to Manfred Von Karma’s Office. So it wasn’t hard for him to recall the way to get there.

The building itself was rather huge, several other prosecutor’s offices were here, plus some training programs went on in this same building. Edgeworth and Franziska used to attend to these training classes as children. It made him smile for a moment recalling this, not everything about this place was all bad memories. But the important thing was the task at hand, which was finding Cyrene Von Karma.

On the outside of the building there were several police officers. Edgeworth decided to approach them and see what was going on.

“May I ask what is with the gathering?” Edgeworth asked.

“Oh hello, have you not heard the news of the kidnapping?” one of the officers asked.

“You mean of Cyrene Von Karma?” Edgeworth asked, tapping his shoulder. “Yes I’ve been asked by Franziska Von Karma to come help investigate.”

“Oh so you’re with her huh?” the officer raised his eyebrow. “But her niece isn’t the only one that’s been kidnapped. The Chief Prosecutor was kidnapped as well with another young prosecutor as well.”

This took Edgeworth aback a little. “T-three people were kidnapped at once?”

“And in different locations too.” The officer sighed. “We’re still unsure how it was pulled off or how they’re all linked together.”

“Where is Prosecutor Von Karma now?” Edgeworth asked.

“She’s inside on the top floor which-“ the officer was cut off by a loud noise. An explosion!

What was…!!!” Edgeworth looked up. He could see many of the windows were blown out with fire, and the ground shook from under them. “Move now!” he grabbed the office and moved back as fast as he could.

“W-what is this?” the officer seemed panicked as yet another explosion went off, and the building soon after began to crumble to the ground!

Many of the police officers that were near the entrance was caught in the rubble. Had Edgeworth not moved that officer then, they would have joined them.

“Who would set a bomb in the Prosecutor’s Office?” the policeman asked in a state of shock.

‘Who indeed? Was the kidnapper trying to remove evidence from the crime scene?’ Edgeworth was trying to gather his thoughts, but that’s when it hit him. “Franziska!” she was inside! He rushed towards the destruction just to see… But it was impossible with all that rubble, and odds were anyone under it was already dead. If that wasn’t enough, the flames covered quite a bit of the rubble, which would finish anyone off anyway.

“T-the odds are everyone that was inside was just murdered…” the policeman shivered.

“No… It can’t be….” Edgeworth’s whole world turned upside down in that moment. Franziska was…… Dead?

---------------------------------------------------------------

Author’s Notes: I think I sorta rushed the end of this chapter but I wanted to end the first chapter on that question. Marie I picked out as her name means ‘bitter’, fits the Von Karmas very well. And I couldn’t resist the use of Phoenix the dog, as Manfred Von Karma stated in the first game his granddaughter had a dog named Phoenix, meaning yes this is the same dog! For some reason I pictured Franziska’s sister having a whip as well, and this is why Franziska mostly whips males, as her sister whips EVERYONE. And I know I reused some of Lang Zi’s sayings from AAI1 but I did make up one too, I’ll try to mix and match reusing and making my own.

Author’s Notes: The following here is just a flashback of the ending of Justice For All, the second Phoenix Wright game, so obvious spoiler warning here. I only placed the conversation by itself trying to do a simple flashback, hopefully it’s obvious that the dark red is Miles Edgeworth and cyan is Franziska Von Karma. While this may seem pointless at first, there is a point to relating back to this event.

Chapter Two: Edgeworth's Struggle

************************************************

“Are you running away?”

“Shut up! You don't understand a thing! You can't possibly understand what it means to be ‘Manfred von Karma's daughter’! So many expectations from everyone around me... Expectations I must fulfill! I'm expected to win no matter what. And failure? Such a thing is not an option for me! My father was a genius. There's no doubt about that! But... But me... I'm no genius. I've always known that. But I... I had to be one. I had to.”

“You may not be a genius like your father... But... You are a prosecutor. You have been and always will be.”

“...! No, I'm not... Not anymore. I've even thrown my whip away.”

“Speaking of that... Wright gave me this to hold onto. I'm going to say this again. We prosecutors do not fight for personal honor or pride. I hope you will think deeply... About what you should be striking down with that whip.”

“...You haven't changed a bit… You've always... You've always left me alone and walked on ahead without me. Miles Edgeworth... I've always hated you. And then... Finally, my chance to take my revenge on you arrived. If I could win against that man... If I could make Phoenix Wright bow down in defeat... Then this ‘girl’ you left behind would have risen higher than you! That was supposed to be my ‘revenge’...... You know, I can't do it... I can't change who I am. I can't throw away everything I've been until today.”

“I believe you can. Just like how Adrian Andrews did. You were going to use her during the trial, right? But you... You were ‘dependant’ on your father by using his tactics. Isn't that right?”

“Hmph!”

“Today, you chased after me, after I had left you behind all these years. And that's why we're standing here now, side by side. But I have no intention of stopping. If you say you are going to quit your walk down the prosecutor's path…... Then, this is where we part ways, Franziska von Karma.”

“I... I... I am Franziska von Karma. Don't think I'm going to walk in your shadow forever... Our battle... begins now... so you had better prepare yourself, Miles Edgeworth!”

****************************

Edgeworth just stood still in shock as he watched the firemen working on the remains of the Prosecutor’s Office. He’d never quite lost his composure like this in quite a while, and his mind was racing. What made his mind return to that day 8 years ago? Perhaps because the back of his mind was doubting this, as something just seemed unreal… How long had he been standing there out of it by now?

Edgeworth checked his watch. 2 hours already had gone by, this had never happened to him before. Was it because of Franziska?

The flashing of cameras was what had shocked him back to reality. Several reporters were on the scene, speaking to several people and taking photos. One had pointed a camera almost directly at him, which was the flash that had awoken him from his daydream.

“Um sir, I didn’t get your name before.” The officer that he had saved came over. “I’m Terry Lynx.”

“Miles Edgeworth.” Edgeworth replied.

“Oh yes you were the student of Manfred Von Karma correct?” Lynx asked. “That explains why some of the reporters stopped to take your picture as well spotting you here.”

Edgeworth crossed his arms. The mention of that name didn’t stir him up as much as it used to, but it still was a deep wound. “Yes, I was.” He merely replied. “May I ask how… How much of a body count are we presuming?”

“I was speaking to the other officers, apparently the fire alarm had been triggered about a hour before the building exploded.” Lynx explained. “That’s why so many people were outside the building, I was out here at the time investigating the kidnapping. Ms. Von Karma had sent me out to file some items into evidence at the time, I was just returning when you arrived.”

Edgeworth blinked. “Then that means not everyone was inside… Seems pointless to pull the fire alarm before setting off a bomb, if it was a terrorist attack that is.”

“Though they aren’t ruling that out.” Lynx pointed out. “But this was found within the rubble.” He held up a very burnt, beat up brown whip.

Edgeworth’s eyes widened at the sight. It had to be Franziska’s. “W-was she…? W-where exactly was it found?” he held his breath for the news as his heart seemed to had stopped.

“Just within the rubble they said, nothing around it but damage from the room.” Lynx said. “The main victims they said were on the ground floor.”

Edgeworth’s eyes widened. ‘Franziska’s body wasn’t discovered with the whip?’ That wasn’t right… If she was inside even at the ground floor she’d be with that whip. As there was only one time she ever cast it aside…

Edgeworth felt a small wave of relief. Franziska must still be alive! The question was, though, where, and why was her whip there... unless! It was placed... like someone is trying to make her appear to be dead. He decided it was best to keep this theory to himself, as it could possibly give him the clues to find out what was going on.

But there were several questions following this whole situation… Was it the person who set up the bomb that pulled the fire alarm, or was it possible it was someone else?

“It could be possible someone discovered the bomb and pulled the fire alarm, or someone discovered a person’s intention… But the question is, did that person make it out before the building collapsed?” Edgeworth asked, drumming his fingers on his arm.

“There isn’t much that can be done until the rubble is cleared I’m afraid.” Lynx said, rubbing his head.

“What were the items Franziska had you take?” Edgeworth asked.

“I honestly didn’t look, they were all in one large bag I took back to the station.” Lynx admitted. “Though she did say something about finding something of her niece’s.”

Something of Cyrene’s? Well that would prove she had been there… The more Edgeworth pondered this case, the more uneasy he was. While his theory was that Franziska is still alive, he didn’t have enough proof to totally reassure himself. He hadn’t felt this unnerved since the case revolving around the DL-6 Incident, he was extremely worried for both Cyrene and Franziska’s safety. He couldn’t just keep standing here waiting, he had to get moving now. If they are both still alive, there’s no telling for how long, so time was of the essence.

“Hmm, well while we are waiting, is it possible for me to look over the kidnapping case?” Edgeworth asked, he was really putting too much effort into keeping his voice even. “I can return to investigate here when the area is cleared.”

“I believe so sir, just I have to remain here for a while to help out with the witness statements.” Lynx explained. “I was standing with you at the time so I already have yours filed, but I can meet up with you at the station in about 2-3 hours.”

Edgeworth nodded. “Very well, I have something I must check up with first. I shall see you then.” He then walked towards Marie’s car.

Finally he was out of the view of others, and he smashed his hand on the hood of the car. ‘Dammit Franziska why didn’t you tell me… I would have come with you, why do you still insist on doing things by yourself?’ he held his hand over his head, trying to control himself as his thoughts raced. ‘You chase after me, come immediately when I call for your assistance, but you never want me to come to help you. It was surprising enough that after a while you finally gave in and sent word out to myself and Lang… Only because you were desperate for help? Had you told us from the start maybe things wouldn’t have ended up at this point… There’s just something not right…’

The Prosecutor opened the door and entered the vehicle, he drove the car back to Marie’s house. He parked the car in the driveway and just sat there. It was like the shock was still settling in. He smacked his fist on the dashboard and held his head with his other hand, fighting the tears that were welling up. But he wasn’t very successful, all he could keep doing was blaming himself for not getting here sooner, for not pressing Franziska further when she abruptly left the investigation to come here. Her voice, her face, memories of his adopted sister flashed before his mind, what if he really was too late? What if she really was gone…?

He hadn’t broken down like this since his father died, since not long after that under Manfred Von Karma’s teaching he had banished any such emotion. But over the past decade ever since that case was resolved, his emotions had started betraying him and coming slowly back to the surface. Mostly thanks to Phoenix Wright, his childhood friend and rival. Even though over the past 7 years, Wright was avoiding him a lot due to the embarrassment of his disbarment. The defense lawyer just about cut himself off from everyone out of shame. Though over the past few months he had contacted him out of the blue, regarding trying to bring back the judicial system. Which Edgeworth himself was quite for, after seeing the results of another country’s court system with a judicial system. So he helped Wright get the support he needed, and it was rumored it was going to see it’s first trial run soon.

Brother Edgeworth?” the voice of Marie tapping on the car’s window snapped him out of his trance.

Edgeworth opened the door and stepped out of the car. “Apologies, I was… Collecting my thoughts.”

“You seemed quite deep into them at that.” Marie raised her eyebrow. “And you’re back awful fast, though where is my sister?”

Edgeworth suddenly then felt a deep, sickening feeling at the pit of his stomach. How should he tell her this? Should he tell her his theory that she could be alive? But what if only that would crush her hopes even further than his if he turned out to be wrong?

“Have you looked at the news?” he managed to choke out.

“What foolishness are you spouting?” Marie looked annoyed as she smacked him with her whip.

Edgeworth wasn’t prepared for the whip this time, it made him stumble back against the car. “… There was an explosion at the Prosecutor’s Office…”

Marie’s eyes widened with sudden silence.

“Back already Mr. Prosecutor?” Lang walked over, his coat was covered in dirt and some rips. Looked like he had some trouble with Phoenix the dog… “… Hey what got the elder Wild Mere stunned?”

That got a reaction out of Marie, as she attacked the man with her whip several times. “HOW DARE YOU CALL ME THAT AGAIN!!!

“Word of advice Agent Lang, unlike Franziska, Marie does not take well to those nicknames.” Edgeworth warned.

Lang glared at him while groaning from the pain. “You couldn’t have warned me about that sooner?” he grumbled.

“… So father’s office was…?” Marie asked, tugging on her whip.

Edgeworth nodded. “The whole building was destroyed, the fire alarm had been triggered before the bomb went off, so they believe some people escaped. But they discovered this in the rubble already.” He held up the whip.

Lang was taken aback by this. “W-wait… Are you telling me that sis… Is…?”

Edgeworth turned his head, his hand gripping his left arm. “It will be quite a while before the whole area is cleared, plus there was a fire so they may not find all the bodies. But they are already presuming her… Dead.”

Marie then lashed out her whip at the prosecutor a few times. “You fool! You foolish, foolish, fool of a… How could you? Why didn’t you get here sooner?!?”

“W-wait Marie! Stop! Hold it!” Edgeworth was trying to dodge some of the whipping, but failed several times over. “I SAID HOLD IT!!!

Finally Marie stopped, only for a moment. “… Fine, what is it? Another foolish word out of you and I swear…”

“Marie, think about it. Don’t you think it’s odd Franziska just suddenly tried to send out for myself and Agent Lang?” Edgeworth asked. “She’s not the type to go calling for help and you should know that! She’s too prideful for that.”

“Your point being…?” Marie asked, looking annoyed.

“It makes me wonder if she had to call us here.” Edgeworth pointed out. “Did she discuss anything about the case with you?”

“Not much, but when she told me you were coming she didn’t quite tell me why…” Marie looked to her right, trying to recall the conversation. “I do recall her saying yesterday something about running out of time… It was like she was trying to hurry it up, be finished before you came, now that you mention it.”

“In a few hours, the officer that was assisting her will allow me to look over the evidence she found today in your father’s office.” Edgeworth explained. “But first, I want to look around the room she was staying in if you do not mind.”

The Elder Von Karma Sister sighed. “Fine… But Brother Edgeworth… You don’t really think that she…?”

Edgeworth shook his head. “I cannot give a full opinion until I have all the facts. But there is one contradictory piece of evidence already.”

Lang nodded. “I think I know what you’re talking about, that whip right? I mean, how did they find it that quickly? Knowing sis she probably had it on her like normal, so it should had been buried in the rubble.”

Edgeworth blinked. Why in the world didn’t that come across him? Was he just in that much shock over Franziska that his logic was so faulted? That should had been the first thing he noticed! But quickly he tried to recover himself. “Errr… Yeah, exactly. It was found much too quick, so I believe it was planted to cast suspicion that she was inside when the building came down.”

“Let’s not waste anymore time foolishly.” Marie hissed, smacking her whip at both of the men. “The sooner we get to the bottom of this, the sooner we can find out what happened to my daughter and my little sister!”
