He kinda reminds me of a Danganronpa character with the hairstyle and colour choices. Cool stuff!! I love trying to work out the sprites used in a frankensprite, but for the face I can't tell! Awesome work!

Just so we're clear, is it HIS right arm, or the arm on the right from our perspective (i.e. his left arm)?

Because I thought the left arm looked kinda weird (it's scratch-sprited), and edited it a lot to try and make it work.

Sure. First off, I highly recommend using Paint.net to create your sprites, and GIMP to animate them. While you can technically use regular MS Paint, GIMP, or Photoshop to make sprites, using MS Paint is like trying to cut a steak with a butterknife, whereas GIMP and Photoshop are like using a meat cleaver. PDN gives you the exact set of tools you need and nothing else. The only thing it doesn't do that you need is animation, hence GIMP.

Here's a step by step breakdown of my usual method.

Spoiler:
Start off with a base.
Image

We'll be using this head for the base sprite.
Image

Next, remove the face and any other unneccessary details.
Image

Then, select some other bases that have compatible facial features.
ImageImageImageImage

Now I've taken Drew's hair, Will's eyes, Valant's nose, and Eldoon's mouth, and added them to our base.
Image

Next, I recolour the extra parts to match the base (or sometimes vice-versa).
Image

Once that's done, I add extra details - outlines, extra layers of shade, all things to make it mesh together.
Image

Now that the head is done, time to pick a body.
Image

As with the face, we need to remove unique details.
Image

Now to find the pieces to fill the gaps.

ImageImage

Then combine them in:
Image

Now to match the colours and details. It's good to try and change little details to deviate it from your base, as clothes can look quite samey.
Image

Next, a recolour, since this quite obviously still resembles its base too much.
Image

Finally, put the pieces together and add details to merge.

Do you have a thread for your Kristoph game? Or is it too early in development for that?

It's actually mostly done, but I've been stuck at an impasse for a while with the final testimony. Has to all work in a certain order. Was a lot easier in its original comic form where interactivity wasn't a factor, so converting that same plot into something the player can unravel themselves is a nightmare.

That, and revamping the sprites. For example:

ImageImage

Yeah. Needed doing.

PhoenixAA wrote:

Interesting. That part wasn't really edited from its base, so maybe it's a perspective issue. Will work on that before I do the rest of the set.

Ladies and Gantlemen, welcome the father of Kristoph and Klavier Gavin... Kurtis Gavin!

For reference, the old version:
Image

For reference, an even older version:
Image

Father of the Gavin brothers, and head of the Gavin & Co. Law Offices during the events of Kristoph Gavin: Ace Attorney. An avid painter and enthusiast of the arts, a trivia buff, and an all-round nice guy (sometimes too much for his own good).

This was actually one of my earliest OCs, dating back to before I even played the Ace Attorney series. He was obviously quite different at first - he wasn't a Gavin, for one (his original name was Curtis Lycinder). And of course, he didn't sport the Gavin drills. He was originally in a fantasy series that was essentially a ripoff of Harry Potter mixed with Final Fantasy elements. It was terrible, but some of my early character concepts have come with me, and Kurtis is one.

In this remake I strove to make him as distinct as possible from the other two Gavins whilst still making him strikingly similar. The addition of purple to his palette (a different shade to his sons) to keep him more thematically in line was used. I also gave him a bowtie to make him a little more distinct from his body base (Apollo). Effort was also made to make him noticably taller and more imposing than his sons. Besides changing details of the face (originally Kristoph's with elements of Klavier added), I also changed his skin tone and made his hair neater than his sons. I'd like to think I did a pretty good job establishing his design as his own whilst still making him plausibly canon.

My life has been chaos for most of the last 5 months, but everything is relatively settled now and I finally have time to sprite again.

Finished another pose for my Kristoph revamp... which apparently I never posted the first pose for, so I guess here's that too.

Thanks guys. Base took absolutely ages, used the same Phoenix + Edgeworth base combo I did for my first version back in like 2009, but this time I downscaled the HD sprites to DS size, and then traced over it with Kristoph's palette.

Besides Klavier's head (obviously) everything else is scratched to match.

Anyway I was on a roll and wanted to take advantage of my spriting mood, so here's another pose.

ImageImage

With any luck I can ride this impulse to having a decent number of poses done.

That was not fun to create. There wasn't a single Klavier head pose that was even vaguely at the same angle as Kristoph's smiling pose, so I had to rotate Klavier's objection sprite 27.5 degrees, and then trace over it because of the antialiasing.

Hey so I know I haven't posted much lately. Not that I haven't been working on anything, though! I've mostly been working on a few large works for other people that will take some time, and I don't intend to post any of those until they're finished.

Also I got hit by a car and fractured my spine which put me out of commission for a while. That also happened.

But anyway, I made an entry for the cosplay-themed contest.

ImageImage

Apollo Justice cosplaying All Might from My Hero Academia. Because we all know Apollo is a lowkey weeb anyway, and why wouldn't he make some use of those horns?

Of course, even with the muscle suit, he still gets people asking him if he's cosplaying Small Might. Apollo just can't catch a break.

I really love how well you can do AA-style faces. Those and hands have always been basically impossible for me. Also:

Hey everyone! Turns out I'm actually not dead. Who knew?

I've had intermittent issues with homelessness and my equipment breaking without having money to replace it since 2019 so there's been a pretty big absence but I honestly can't tell you how happy I am to be spriting again.

Here are two commission sets I took on a while back which I recently finished. Once again, massive thank you to the both of you for your patience while I got set up again.

Joshua Carter, an OC commissioned by jmkrebs30 for their fancase "Turnabout in the Family".

This is definitely the biggest set I've done so far and I really had to push myself on a few of these. This is broadly a frankensprite but I had to trace over and manipulate the bases so much that the originals barely exist for the most part. Front-facing poses head is Machi Tobaye, body is Cody Hackins, and hair has some elements of Horace Knightley. Aide sprites use young Raymond Shields for both the head and body. Deadass can't remember who I used for the arms crossed pose, young Franziska I think? Not sure who I used for the hands in the deskslam pose but the arms as scratched. Young Ema Skye's eyes were uses for all poses.

Image

Mugshot for David Carter, Joshua's father in the above, also for jmkrebs30 for the same case.

Image

Veronica Edgeworth, mother of Miles Edgeworth, commissioned by TheDoctor.

Technically a frankensprite but most of the details have been reworked and scratched over the point that little remains of most original parts. Her hair is Miles Edgeworth's, the jumpsuit is Wendy Oldbag's, the coat is a combination of Lana and Ema (both versions), her head is Justine Courtney's, and the hands in her smiling pose are Elise Deauxnim's.

Woah this is awesome! I can really see the improvement in your overall composition of sprites! Even the animation of that shocked pose and desk slam is so smooth!

Thanks! I really pushed myself to do as best as I could on these two. Might've been a mistake in a way - giving myself as much detail to work with on these loose clothes with lots of creases made it a nightmare to add additional poses where they were facing different ways. Was a big learning experience and definitely helped me grow as a sprite artist but also wow this was a lot.

The pre-animation for the shocked sprite wasn't even something they commissioned, I just realised I could make it happen and went ahead with it.

Happy to see all the support for my return to spriting.

Going through my folders from way back I can see there's a lot of stuff I never actually posted. Years ago I started working on original sprites for ZetaAzuel's "A Turnabout Through Time", which originally used placeholder sprites. Unfortuately, Zeta hasn't been online since 2016 and I think it's safe to say this project is dead, so here's the designs I made for it.

ImageImage
ImageImage
Fran Bergen, assistant for the case.

ImageImage
Edgar Bergen, Fran's father.

ImageImage
And Frank Seguridad, a security guard at the museum the case was set in.

There's a lot more stuff I never published but I actually intend to finish the sets for most of what's left, so... yeah.
