I was flipping through your characters and saw a new Polly! I rather like this one. It's more distinct than the first, but the subtleties are good, as well. To me it seems like Polly got half a decade older. I wouldn't be expecting such a harsh change, anyways. And the fact that his hair is grown out more, doesn't make him look so much like a newbie defense attorney. :D

Edit: I forgot to say I really enjoyed the new detective! Very original. Will he be like a Gumshoe, pal?

While I agree with Sammie on how Apollo looks more rough and rugged (Living in the Wright household [with magic panties and wooden men] will do that to a man).

I do have some constructive criticism

Before I begin, I'd like to mention that all of my criticisms are simply feelings I have and while I am at no level to speak about how you should improve you're sprites. I humbly offer these critiques for your review.

Now as many people have mentioned I find the shading to... harsh. Certain lines on his suit become too dark too swiftly, most noticeably in his left arm. On that note I love the color you picked, well you kind of switched the tie's colors for the suits but it's still my favorite color ever! :hotti:

I also think that his suit buttons are leaning in te wrong direction. Due to the fact that his body is tilted naturally to the right by his pose. His buttons would pulled tot by his jacket which is stretching because of his arm (which would make the heavy shaded folds). I propose to try raising the buttons on his coat to the same level or even a pixel or two higher.

His left sleeve, it has been the point of debate. Nadindi claimed that the elbow causes the fabric to do that. However I think that the way you have it is incorrect. because the elbow is the farthest point away from the natural contour of the jacket its pulling it tight. There shouldn't be any folds there, further up the sleeve where the shoulder of the jacke it wider perhaps but not that far down.

I love the hair style. Adding a third... um.. tuff of hair on the top of his head makes him look more mature.
(What's this, Apollo's evolving? ..... Congratulations Apollo just evolved into Apollo, age 30!)
I also like the two marks on his face. I think most people think their wrinkles but he's not that old, could they be scars?! :udgy:

Anywho. Tis a goodly sprite. however, its the little things that make it weird you know?

You're quick to throw words around like that to make one's words demeaning, which is not my intent. I simply saw problems in your sprite and gave you the 411. Regardless of whether or not you saw my post as negative is entirley up to you. BUT, I won't suger-coat my suggestions because people feel they've done a good job, and don't like what's said. I'll be blunt with people, if it means they can do a better job. If I see a problem, guess what? I'm going to tell you there's a problem. That's how I give constructive criticism. You're welcome to take mine or any other suggestions to heart or to ignore it. It's up to you.
Also, What do my Sprites have to do with this?! I never brought them up in my post's, nor did I compare them to yours, in this thread. I feel it rather rude using my sprites as an excuse to justify your defense. I may not like some edits, But I don't hate them. I don't feel any superior to you or anyone else, so don't slander me like that to win an argument, or jump to conclusions.

@SilentBobX: Very well, Seems like I misunderstood the intent of your words, However, a couple of things i still have to add.

-The "blunt" Truth, There is no such thing, Truth is objective and acting blunt is nothing more then an excuse to disregard the emotions of another person, and is usually used when trying to show signs of superiority.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not accusing you of this, just mentioning that in quite some cases this seems to be the fact.
I'm not asking to sugarcoat it, I just expect people I treat with respect to do the same.

-On to the actual criticism, It's fair. And I have already begun incorperating your's and other's advice into it.
And again, you are all thanked for it.

- You mentioned I was rude to mention/compare your sprites, Yet when browsing through other threads, most noticebly The contest results thread (or your own for that matter), you yourself have mentioned on multiple occasions your resentment of the "simple" edits that placed higher then your entry wich included one of my own.
Because of this and this alone I made my conclusion. If i was mistaken in my assumption, then I apologize.

@Skeledude12: Thank you for your comments, Already begun on an update. ^_^
And yep, you're correct about the scars.

I don't believe people can truley get by with half hearted reply's that don't contribute to ones work. Some can, some didn't. What I say is a a basic refelctions of how others have responded to my art. I took what was said, and applied it to my work. This is just a difference of opinion. I believe commenting on something in one fashion, and you do it in another. Respect is to be earned, not given.

What I say in another topic has nothing to do with your thread. I'm commenting on your work alone, here. DON'T bring up something from another topic, that has nothing to do with your work. IF I said something specific where it refered to your art alone, then it can be mentioned in your thread, But unless you can prove I DID say such a thing then you've no right to say I said such a thing in your topic.

Ladies and gentlemen.

Now I am a new member, but I am not a new forum user. I can say honestly and with confidence that unless this arguement is going to come to a head, we should return to topic.

Who said what, when and how is irrelevant. However:

@SilentBobX- What you say anywhere on the forum is acountable to what anyone think of you. If they feel that you are being injust than they have a right to tell you so and quote specific examples from other posts where you have done the same if it is their wish. Ceres has chosen to do so. Now it's neither here nor there whether Ceres was in the right or in the wrong in doing so, however this is Ceres' sprite topic and Ceres can take the criticism they way Ceres sees fit.

@Ceres- While Silent's critique mayseem harsh and subjective to you, to Silent it may have seemed constructive there in lies the problem. Now I'm not saying Silent was in the right in comment the way Silent saw fit. Unfortunately there will always be rough comments and as sprite artists or heck even as artists we have to see these for what they really are, honest attepmts to help. Silent was trying to give you a hand in fixing your sprite.

@Ksunwoo6- I feel for you. We are both newer member to the site, its hard to earn respect on such a prestigious Phoenix Wright community and esspeically as a spriter. Now just cause Ceres doesn't take your comment to heart don't take it personally. I was on your side with the shading and I forgot to mention that you mentioned it first so please forgive me for stealing your idea. :(

Other than that this 'incident' has been blown way out of proportion. This is supoosed to be a postive enviroment for creating and sharing our pixelated PW works. While opinions may differ the fundemental goal is improvement, of both the sprites and ourselves.

Now can we get back to Ceres' sprites? :butzthumbs:

I guess you could consider this a more thoughtful birthday present since the first one I did was done hasily.

Image

This is the actual card from a game called Chez Geek. I don't know if they have it in Belgium, but if you ever run across it I recommend giving it a try. The only thing I changed were the graphic and the Booze part. It was orginally Weed and I thought I'd go with something safer. You seem cool like Older Godot, so I used that sprite edit. I don't know how much hassel clients give you since you're freelance, but I can imagine people are picky when it comes to something they are paying for.

I hope you enjoy this, and is it okay to post this card in my own topic, with credit to you on the sprite naturally?

Too much comments to comment, Let's leave this subject now, one could bicker at it for hours.
I could prepare a long rebuttal here, but frankly i don't care anymore.
So a clean slate is in order.

Thanks Lunaria! Nope, Don't know the game, but go ahead and include it in your topic.
Now then, Not the most difficult of edits, but certainly one of the most tedious.
Took quite some time to fill in the blanks and animation.

Itsa Zak!

I noticed that Zak pulls the trigger to make Hat talk while Trucy, in fact, pushes it.
That 'sposed to be?

I also just noticed that Hat somehow manages to make the hat thinner. XD

...I'm trying not to sound too offensive, but I also noticed, that Hat's cape
stops in mid-air. Which is weair considering the animation does go farther at one
point in him appearing.

.......Uh... and at one point in the animation, the Hat's pole seems to appear from
out of nowhere from under the cape, where there's a bit that should normally be
visib- now I'm just looking way too carefully.

Nice idea though, and nicely worked out.

The way he's operating it looks... odd. Also, I didn't think he was bald back then.

@Greeny :
-Well noted Greeny, Couple of things though, yes, The way he operates it was the only way it would make the sprite somewhat plausible, I see no problem with it.

-About the hat, tell Trucy that as well.

-The cape, Yep, you're right. This is because of the dimensions.
Combined the 2 sprites, canvas larger then AA would normally allow, so some fitting came in to get the arm correctly, this left a gap below Mr. Hat.
However, Should this be imported into a casemakergame/ comic; The lower part of Zak would be cut off.
I merely left it here because there is no need to do that now.

@Personman: While I appreciate the comment, that does't help me in the slightest.
What exactly looks odd?
And, The fact that he was bald then is mere speculation on my part, But judging from 4-1 , A middle aged man couldn't have turned completely bald in only a few years, so It's safe to assume it's genetic and he had it for quite a while.

If I may make a suggestion, Ceres? It's a tiny one, due to the fact that your awesome doesn't need much improvement.

Basically, it's the fact that Mr. Hat looks like he's coming from behind the cape rather than from inside of it (like Trucy). Like it'd be in plain sight (in a little ball or something) if we were to view him from the back. ...I'm not making much sense, am I?

Notice that while it looks like it's coming from behind, it's actually coming in from inside. Notice that little Trucy has to jump so that Mr. Hat can come out, and that the cape moves ever so slightly when he appears.

Of course, I could just be going mad.

She jumps afterwards Geno, And Personally, The bottom of the capes don't move, So i'm inclied to think from behind.
--

Anyway, I'm rather getting enough of spriting all together when lately all I have to do is defend them against mostly ungrouded criticism.
Don't get me wrong, While i appreciate the criticism, but i've noticed, when one person starts, a whole heap tags along saying the exact same thing.
Yet, no other threads seem to suffer from this.

So, For a while, I'm done with this.
Don't take this as a childish post (Booh, negative comment! , this is not the case :P) , for a while now, I've been contemplating about stopping before 2009.
This only confirms it. I had a good run, Time to step back for the new guys.

Again, This wasnt decided in a day or so, The reason I'm holding the sprite cup in the first place was to take a step back and act more as someone who gives advice for those who ask. (and go out doing something productive for everyone), and what better way to do so?

Anywho, Feel free to give advice, compliment, or comment any way you see fit, but for now I'm throwing in the towel.
(Don't worry Geno, I'l still finish the sprite I promised, As well as any needed for the (my) fangame wich is still being worked on)

ps: I might finish some half finished sprites that I have lying around, but don't hold your breath.

Anywho, Feel free to give advice, compliment, or comment any way you see fit, but for now I'm throwing in the towel.
(Don't worry Geno, I'l still finish the sprite I promised, As well as any needed for the (my) fangame wich is still being worked on)

ps: I might finish some half finished sprites that I have lying around, but don't hold your breath.

...Sorry. I've been trying to help, and I think I rocked the boat too much. :larry:

Anyways, I can't wait to see Maxy soon. I know you'll do great!

Don't get me wrong, While i appreciate the criticism, but i've noticed, when one person starts, a whole heap tags along saying the exact same thing.
Yet, no other threads seem to suffer from this.

I know, right? I never get any constructive critcism on my spriting... D:
Oh, not what you meant. xD
Somehow I have noticed, and I'm not sure if it's just me, but the better and more
professional you get, the more people think it's okay to criticise. It's probably just me though.

Anyways that reminds me, I need to finish my entry for the sprite cup.
But I just can't figure out whether or not I should enter certain sprites because
this sprite appears in my sprite comic and there' certain 'spoiler' sprites
I've got so I'm not sure whether to enter those or not.................
But now I'm just rambling about my own worries. If only I knew whether I need
those sprites to stand a chance of getting in the finals. XD

What exactly looks odd?

Trucy moves her hand up and down, but Zak moves side to side. It might looks better with a different arm. (Although, Zak doesn't really have any that would look good)

The fact that he was bald then is mere speculation on my part, But judging from 4-1 , A middle aged man couldn't have turned completely bald in only a few years, so It's safe to assume it's genetic and he had it for quite a while.

Hmm... I suppose that's true. I did expect him to have at least a little bit of hair.

Don't get me wrong though, I love your work.

I'm sorry to read that you will be giving this up because you are very talented in my opinion. Overall you seem very good at editing existing sprites and pieces to create something new, but at the same time looks altogether original (i.e. Older Godot, Reno, etc.). The scratch work I've seen you do also seems very professional. It makes me interested to see the work you've done freelance.

I hope you don't give up spriting forever because it did seem that you had a lot of fun with it, and I'm sorry if I ever gae you any ungrounded criticism because if I did it was not intentional.

Aw, Ceres! It's nice to take a break, but I honestly look forward to seeing how your fangame turns out. I mean, I will miss seeing your sprites, but this isn't a goodbye forever, right? Right...? I know how getting criticism for something you took out the time to work on is... and, although some are helpful or not, do not discourage. You have the single-most huge fanbase in this spriting forum, believe it or not. You're great, Ceres.

I say just have fun with your game. Take a break, and when you're ready... please come back again! Your original and edited (existing) sprites are a pleasure to see. And certainly do inspire a lot of us lot, y'know?

Edit: bibliomaniac, you're so cute. Towel abuse, indeed! :garyuu:

Ah, it'd be sad to see you go Ceres. You offer some great inspiration and some awesome sprites. I generally lurk, and I must say, a lot of the harsh critcisim you get is widely undeserved. Frankly I think every single work you have turned out is plum, down right amazing. No one else here could turn out the high caliber quailty that you do when you make your sprites, and with your wit either. (For some reason I feel like I'm writing an obituary :O)

Anyway, I'm just trying to encourage you to keep at it, but you do as you like.

AWH!
But Ceres is awesome...
I hope that you continue eventually.
And in the meantime get your game all progressed and whatnot.
You are one of the best spriters here, and your eye for detail, that still remails with the big picture is great.
You don't stree about the little things, but it still shows that you care a lot for your work.
Hope once the contest is over you will be able to critique everyones work a bunch =D
