- She's already halfway done, I'd like the rest of her sprites to be similar.
- There's already a few others working on Helen, or at least, I think they still are. I'm going to take the closest sprites to the original.

While creating a fan game is a copyright violation, it's pretty unlikely that Capcom would pursue legal action. You've got a good fair use defense (that is, you're infringing copyright, but the law considers it justified, so you're not liable), so long as you don't charge for the game. Also, Japan in general tends to be more friendly to fan-made derivatives, since it usually boosts the sales of their main profit-makers. Basically everything on the C-R website is a copyright violation (sprites, music, animations, etc.), but if I recall correctly, Capcom approves of the site (didn't they invite Croik to an event?). But commerciality is a huge finger on the scale against fair use, so I would hold off on that merchandise if I were you.
That said, I see people selling unauthorized T-shirts and other merchandise with game/anime images on them all the time, and I haven't seen any of them get shut down. But that would be a classic case for cease & desist, and I wouldn't recommend pushing it.
Not to make this more off the topic of sprites than it originally was...

I recall talk of a demo a year ago, but nothing came of it.
I just lol when I see so many AAO games/other cases on different platforms already finished, yet no-one pays attention to them.
While a game that's being allegedly worked on, deserves "over 4 threads", a blog, a site, and now..merchandise?

When I announced that demo last year, I wasn't aware that I would be thrust into a job, 5 university classes, and 3 other computer projects where I am getting paid. The blog was also created to make some extra money(using AdSense and the such), and the site is planned to go up only if enough money comes in to support it, which will be made once the first 2 cases are complete to support more news, links, and whatnot. The merchandise will not be available until the game is complete, just throwing a heads up in everyone's direction that if they support the blog now, there will be enough funds to have simple merchandise for the game. I'm talking about fanmade ROTP DS cases, and maybe some other things too, but the game itself shall be free.
I really do understand what you're saying, and it's a shame that many cases are being ignored. In all honesty though, if I was to make this on AAO, I'd be done the entire game by now. Anyways, it still does require effort, which I admire. If it means anything, I have renewed a certain topic that was created a few months back, a list of all fangames, casemakers, and other projects. I have announced that if anyone at all with a PW project wants it showcased on the thread, I am willing to take the time to do so. So far, there's only a few, but hopefully more people take notice and everyone's projects can be equally viewed.
Sorry for the overdose of ROTP stuff, Ceres. I wasn't aware that it would create such an impact. And rest assured, I am still working on that demo almost every free day I have!
