Okay, so you may know me. Or not. But ethier way, I'm a passionate OC creator. Trouble is I can't exactly translate my imagination into sprites. So this is where you come in. I'm learning how to sprite, so I'm going to post my ideas and sprites up and you comment and help improve. Yes? Good.
And of you want to critisize, please do it constructively.
Now this is my first sprite, an adult version of Machi Tobaye (it was inspired by ze one only, Dramatica.)
Image
I have another OC comin' soon. So stay tuned! :edgy:

I'm sorry, but this just looks Horrible. From what I can tell, you edited Kristoph’s hair over a resized Maki head (The fuzziness is a dead giveaway), laid Edgeworth’s body over it, and strapped Von Karma’s collar around the neck. The colors are rather poorly chosen too. I think you may have used an editing too, to go over the hair and the body, and blended a color into them. Very, Photoshopish. As far as edits go, this is pretty bad. I mean if this is supposed to be a grown up Maki, id run for the hill’s at the near sight of him.

I’m sorry I had to say it like this but I’d rather state the truth rather then full you ambition for editing with false praise. You won’t get any better if you’re told it looks good, because it doesn’t. I’m sure you can do MUCH better then this. If you have the time take a look at Tajiri Ami’s sprite section and look at her edits. She pays attention to details of sprites, so study her work and maybe you can get better.

Editing or creating new sprites, takes hours, days, weeks to do. It all depends if want to make your sprite’s look as good as the one’s in the Ace Attorney Games.

And I'll run towards him and hug him, even if he is ugly, it's Machi.

It does if you want a to look good. I didn't mean one Sprite out of hundreds on a sheet. I meant a whole sprite sheet all together.

A whole sprite sheet takes quite forever, yes. Then again, you can just edit one and be done with it the first 3-5 days. :P

As much as I admire your honesty SilentBobX, next time just don't be so blunt. I know I'm not the best spriter, in fact I'm far from that, but I try. I honestly try. :sadshoe:
As with Machi, well it's back to the drawing board. Mind you I could try harder. :sadshoe: :sadshoe:
And this is a concept for my charater, Kristina:

So comment, and say what should be better. And remember, constructive critism.

This Sprite could be a lot better if you’d pay attention to detail. It looks like you cut Adrian’s hair from some paper and placed over Iris’ head. The coloring on Ema’s vest and skirt look’s like you colored over it again with an editing tool to save time. Try and get rid of Ema’s button on her lapel. Also, the skin color of the face and arm’s don’t match. Fix it, so that there is only one skin color. Also, I’m not if it’s because this is a concept piece or not, but try not to save as Jpeg. If you plan on working on Edits that are saved as Jpeg’s, then you’re going to have a hard time getting any work done.

If someone is going to be Blunt with you, it might as well be now. There have been plenty of times where I had to hear harsh stuff from other sprite artists about making my work look better, and I took that harshness from them, and applied it to my work. Your “Adventure is Spriting” will be for naught if you can’t improve on your work.

SBX: Well, at least you explained about your harshess. Cruel to be kind, I guess. Anyway:
1. Should I use Paint or GIMP rather than Photoshop? It would make colour editing better.
2. Do you want me to draw my OC's like you rather than mix and match with existing sprites? I would rather use exsiting sprites then work myself up to drawing.

And thanks to Vordox and Zinle for your kind comments.

1: Photoshop is the "BEST" software for overal reasons, while Gimp and Paint(And PSP to an extent) are a better use(And slightly faster) then PhotoShop.
I recommend Gimp/PSP.
2: Depends on how good and certain you are about your own creations(mixes.). Most spriters goes for Edits of current available sprites, some mix and match, some Customs(On the mix and matches), and then we have the Fully scratch done sprites. Depends on where you feel you can do good. For you I think you should be somewhere around Mix + Match, then custom/Draw/remove/add on those edits/matches/Rips/mixes.

And your welcome.

1.When it comes to colors, MSP/paint program is the best choice. I take it though, that you don’t know about the color edit trick in paint. Here’s how it works: If you have it, take a Sprite of Phoenix, and experiment with him. Double click on the Secondary color tray, and pick a color when the option comes up. For Example Red. Now take the "pick color" tool and pick the blue on Phoenix’s suit. Now take the erasing tool, Click and hold the right button on the mouse, and go over Phoenix’s suit. The red that you picked, should erase the blue on his suit. Repeat this process with darker shades of red and you get this:
Image

That should take you less then a minute, if you’re in a hurry.

2. I can’t tell you how you have to edit characters. That’s up to you. But unless you don’t want them to look like Frankenstein creations, you’ll have to be creative and see what you can do on your own. Make sleeves for Ema’s arms, draw a moustache on her face, whatever. just make sure you study some Ace Attotney Sprites and pay attention to detail. As long as you can make something that doesn’t look to close to the original, It can probably considered it a proper edit.

Yeah, you probably shouldn't rush it. And I agree with SBX. The MS Paint trick saves lots and lots of time. :)

Clarify what you mean. Are you saying working on individual colors is taking too much time? You have to expect that if you want your sprites to look good.

Not hard enough, from what I see. It looks like Ema spilled juice on her chest and it’s running down between her boobs. You’re also taking shortcuts again with the coloring. The black spot in the middle of the red looks uneven and bad. Skin color is also mismatched. Just take the pick color tool and put the skin color on Ema’s face in the secondary color tray, and edit the skin on her arms. I’m not sure what I’m seeing , but did you use a noise filter on the bun of her hair? Whatever it is, it looks weird. Also, don’t show us your examples with Jpeg’s. Use PNG or Gif. That’s a Number 1 rule when saving Sprites.

I slightly agree with SilentBob.

The spot in the middle of the shirt is uneven compared to her cloth, try and center it a bit more.

Oh and also, as Silent said, Do save in PNG or Gif.
NEVER EVER Jpeg.
Since it mixes up the colour and creates "blurs" and "pixeldisasters" Not to mention you have to clean it up again if you want to work on the sprite.

Otherwise, I like it. Just need a bit more editing. =)

Okay, so last night I re-did the colouring in Paint. I found it to be surpringsly effective.
Here is the final result:

I am really happy with this result. Is this what you're looking for SBX? I sure hope so.
Oh, and the otehr pic of this sprite was when I was still working on it. That wasn't what I was going for. :edgy: This one is.

It's better then before, but you still need to fix the skin color on her arms to match her face. Paint program should help you out with that.

SBX, are you looking at the arms or the shoulders? Because the arms are in shadows--the skin tones that need to match are the face and the shoulders (which are not in shadows), and they do. (At least as far as I can tell; if they don't match up, they're close enough)

EDIT: Checked with photoshop. The face color code is F8E0D0 and the shoulder color code is F6E6D5. That's pretty darn close.

Yeah, you're getting better. I know some people swear by the GIMP, but honestly, Paint is just oh-so-simple to use. And if you feel it's too simple, you could always download Paint.Net (free!). It has an awesome Magic Wand tool! I think it's better than the GIMP.
