Well hello there!
I've been thinking about making this thread for a while now, and I think ot would be great for artists new and old.

So, here's the deal, say you know how to draw a character you like (and your fairly good at drawing him/her/it), if you would post steps on how you draw them with instructions explaining each picture that would be great. You could post a tut because he's your fave character, or just simply because you wanna! It can be any style you like, and can even be just a copy of a sprite (no tracing though!)

Also, if your a newbie artist, or your just stuck drawing your fave character, you can post a request and somebody nice enough may do it for you!

I'm not sure if this topic will fall or fly, but it seems like
areall good and helpful idea.

Thanks for your time and please contribute!

Not bad, but ... too basic, in my opinion. It doesn't really tell a beginner artist how you draw these things. You just say "Draw them". Give some hints and help on things people could have trouble with, like the hair or the face. Then it would be a lot more helpful~

That's fine, really! I just think you should tell more about how you draw things like the hair and the face. Perhaps you can talk about how you do the lines, where you start with drawing the hair (a big problem for me when I encounter a hairstyle I'm unfamiliar with, so that might be useful) and such. Just try, I'm sure it will be useful for others~

I think the problem is that you've missed out ALOT of steps in the drawing process hon.

The above tutorial come from a book I learnt to draw from, and it is missing out on alot of it's information, but it brushes the basics. If you look at the part with just the head, you'll notice that even though it's only the basic steps, it still has a few extra steps in it.

I've made a few on drawing from photos:- it assumes that you have basic art knowledge

How to Sketch tutorial- click the image for the tutorial- It's words, not an image

Image

Face rendering tips- click the image for the tutorial.

These are both based on using pencil as a medium, but alot can be applied to other mediums. I was gonna make more, but tutorials get silent praise >.> The tutorial was based on the work in progress of thispicture (Which is ironically still WIP)

Not sure if this is the right place for it, but does anyone know a good tutorial on digital inking? I've found some, but they reference the pen tool on Photoshop, which I don't have (I have Photoshop Elements 5.0, for anyone who cares). Should I get the full Photoshop?
I don't really get what the whole inking deal is about, but I know that my art using just the pencil tool in MS Paint looks quite sketchy and ill-defined :P

I'm not sure about this. Tutorials are all well and good for cartoon characters, because they have very specific and distorted shapes- which can only be grasped with knowing the unique framework- but for human characters it's just a case of knowing what features go where on a male/female base (well, that and the size according to the character's age of course). That can be solved by looking at several references from different angles, and hours of observation and practice.

The areas that tuting might help for are very specific. Such as facial features- perhaps this can be for a bunch of close-up eye and face shots, which will be an instant aid to characterising the face and expressions. My boyfriend has a whole book on manga expressions by a Japanese artist, and all of them vary between adult and child (some of them have more pronounced 'feeling' than others). It might help to know where they come from and how they translate through Capcom styled eyes, so to speak.

Oh, tips and tricks for different hairstyles is certainly a plus, too. Again this can be picked up through practice, but anyone new to these particular styles of hair may appreciate pictorial guidance! It may be difficult to document in practice as they are more often than not unrealistic hair styles... which are -very- tricky to say the least *COUGHPHOENIXCOUGH*

EDIT: I neglected to add that there was already an ideal tutorial section open for human characters, and my point was that unless said human character has very unusual features, such as pronounced hump (or tentacles or shit like that lol), then tutorials for specific humans themselves aren't really necessary.

Realism proportions are measurable- in fact, it's more important to get them right than cartoon ones. Sadly, I find that there is little point in me writing one up as there are many excellent tuts out there and even better books.

Linearts however- what you're experiencing, Lynx, is what's called anti-alias. What that is, is photoshop going "Edges which are sharp are ugly. Lets blur it a little. See? Now pretty!" What you need to do to stop that is to use threshold to make it pure black and white (Does it have this feature?), scan it as a black and white image (and hope your page is flat and scanner is clean, or if you draw it by hand, use a hard brush to do your linearts. Otherwise, your coloured artwork will haloed.
