Oh man- had to find out what a Qtip was XD A cotton swab. Ok, you may or may not have great success with that. What people normally use is tissue paper. You can get tightly rolled up pieces in the stationary stores (Or you can in NZ :/ )
which look sorta like this. If you use those, you'll find that they're more precise to use and they don't cost much. They're also good for the REALLY light shades.
Gum erasers are ok, but you're likely finding that they smudge, right? Kneadable erasers are great for pencil pics like this cause gum and rubber ones smudge the pencil. Kneadable ones lift off the pencil. You need to be careful that you don't use them with weight- they are kneadable.
Um...
This tutorial I made on sketching may help you, and
this rendering tutorial may also.
These are all things you should get if you want the best results. For fun practise, I started off using sketch book paper, a pencil and a rubber eraser. I used my finger to smudge things. You can start off with that level if you want, but you should do this one thing- seal your art. Pencil smudges easily for blending, right? That pencil can keep smudging when you file it away till there is no picture left. This has happened to me alot, so when I was a kid, I got my first can of sealant- lasts AGES, and stops your picture from smudging. Hairspray also works :)
If you have questions, feel free to ask. My crit forum is also open if you want me to give pointers on new art. I'll hold back on anything you ask me to so don't be afraid. I know how much of a struggle it was to develop my art when I was 14 :( I'd like to make it easier if I can. IT's a sticky thread so it's easy to find :)
