No, I can't really see any problems except that you're a terrible artist.

Not bad for a starter, keep on going! Working with new programs can be tricky, but tutorials and experimenting around helps a lot for sure. Don't be afraid to use tips and tutorials you find and spice things up as you can! Experimenting pays off~

Alright. :3 I never used that program, but I'll assume it shares some functions with the 'normal' Photoshop which I'm more knowledgeable with.

Firstly, it seems like you've drawn the picture using only one layer. That's... impressive, but it's better reserved to MS Paint and Tegaki, especially if you like using soft brushes (and looking at the picture, I assume you do).
Anyway, your picture is very messy, especially his body. I'd really suggest you make use of the layers; I assure you it'll be much easier to draw and the effects will be much better. :butzthumbs:

Secondly, your lines are very wobbly; judging from the lack of varying thickness of the lines, you're using a mouse. It's very hard to freehand a nice, clean line with mouse; that's why I love the pen tool so much. Give it a try, it's really good both for lineart and filling large spaces. Here are some tutorials: one, two, three, four. Oh, and here's something I found really, really useful: if you hold alt while you click a point, you'll be able to set the uh... curvyness? of the line from the start. It won't base the direction on the previous one.
Oh, and you can use the eraser tool to make the ends of your lines thinner ;)

Thirdly, be consistent with the direction your shading. Looking at him, I can't really see the light source - the shadows don't match up. Try to imagine where the light's coming from and how the shadows should be positioned. At first, make a new layer and draw a little sun there; it makes the whole process easier.

Hm, I think it would be everything from me; I hope I was able to explain everything properly. If you have any questions, just ask.

EDIT: Oh, one thing: DON'T shade the hair with gradients. It looks terrible - try to shade clumps of hair individually. I'm not sure how to explain it, but... look at Lang's sprite. This is what you should be going for if you want a more cartoony style.

I think it depends on how the rest of the picture looks. I think if the gradient went from highlight to low light in the correct direction it'd make a huge difference. I've seen alot of gradient fill hair jobs. I've noticed it doesn't work so good with high contrast colours- unless that's part of the style. IF the colours are similar in luminosity though I can't see why it wouldn't work :) Gradient fill looks alot nicer with vector like lineart, I must admit. That pen tutorial will be handy for you :) That's IMHO anyways ^^

Hm... I've seen people use gradients in shading; I think it can be pulled off, but never as a complete substitute of shading; it works nicely paired with cell shading, to make the picture look smoother. Though feel free to prove me wrong :3 Maybe I just never came across as a good picture using that style.

Don't say that! Practice makes perfect, after all. Just don't forget you draw for fun; if you start treating it as a race - 'who's better and who makes a more awesome picture' it will most likely ruin the enjoyment. :butzthumbs:

Geez, Kaitou, you are reading my mind. XD
Exactly what I would say too! Don't see it just as a competition, see it as a fun hobby! It's about you enjoying yourself, not being the best.

Call me X, please! xD Kaitou sounds kinda silly.

And well, I guess it's one of these things we all know about, but tend to forget when it should concern us. There will always be people better than you and it's not a thing you should cry over; let it be a motivation for you, but not for the cost of the fun.

I'd say I know a little about it. I used to get all depressed that I can't find my own style and practice it and it came down to the situation where with all my desire to do something awesome and impress everyone, I started treating drawing like a chore and couldn't even start because nothing seemed to be good enough.

Nowadays, I'm drawing only for fun. I'm not going to base my career on it, so I can take my time. I'm still trying to find my final style, but before I do, I'm going to have as much fun trying different things out as possible. :phoenix:

I think you'll be as surprised as I was that when you progress long enough in art, some day someone will come up to you and say "I like your style!" You'll be floored, and then you'll realize that there's a certain way you do your thing that's unique to you. Style isn't somethign that happens cause of learning. Style happens. I never realized I had one till I got a comment about it. Then I realized my art looked so different to other peoples. I think you'll be surprised. Just don't stress over it and I think you'll find you actually do have one :)

It's mostly with simplified pics that gradient fill hair works and over complex linearts, and usually you use a circular gradient. Manga styled gradient fills work too. You need really nice lineart for it to work though cause that's what it accents.

That was really uplifting.. Thank you. :)

It's just...I'd really want to finally settle for a style that's something truly mine and unique. Something that would be recognizable as mine even if it was submitted completely anonymously.

I'm sick of random people asking me to say something in Japanese and show them 'my manga', while I've never expressed interest in learning that language and never associated my drawings with manga either. Hell, the first comment I got on my drawings at school was "Hey there, what's that you're drawing? ....oh..it's manga." in that sort of a really disappointed voice.

I would like to finally separate my drawings and myself from that sort of categorising, to show a work I've spend a lot of effort on to someone whose opinion matters to me and not hear "uh, you didn't copy that from internet?". That's all. :sadshoe:

....Uh, that was longer than I've expected xD' I'm sorry for cluttering your thread like that, DefenceLawyer.

There's only one way to fix that. Branch out your repertoire. It may not be as bad as you think it is though. See, Manga purists look at my manga finished comics and turn their nose up at it because my style isn't big eyed, or 'kawaii' enough. Some have verbally put me down for it. You know though- I ENJOY my art style, and doing comics in that format, and I never realized till I released a comic that others like it too. See, you only get comments from people that have something to say. Not people that enjoy it, but feel like they can't comment cause they're worried you may think they're an idiot. You likely have fans you didn't know you had. Seriously. Do art cause you enjoy it. Some will rat it, some will love it, but the only person that has to is YOU. If you do, you'll naturally develop a talent, and you'll naturally push your art further and further cause you enjoy it.

Don't stress over it :grossburg: If you have passion, people will see that and want to be part of it ^^

Anyways- I can't write short winded comments so I'll leave it at that. If you have any need for more pep talk (cause believe me- if it's art, I've probably been there, done that, told the story a few times >.> ) then note me. I'm always happy to give out crit and support to fellow artists ^^ I hate to see people get discouraged from art :sadshoe: It's so easy to give up on it if you don't believe in yourself.

Um... there's quite a few things which would be bugging you I think... I could list them if you want but I don't want to come across rude in your art thread ^^; If you'd like me to give you critique on this, you can tell me if you want me to hold back at all and I'd rather help you there :) Fanart threads like this is for appreciating art. Not fault picking. I'd like to keep it that way if I can for you.

Here's a link to the thread if you want critique on your art

I'll guaranty you that I'll give you crit there, maybe even others :) You may need to wait a day or two for me to have time to type it all out though.
