Yes... I am slightly insane. I'm considering making a shichishito for a cosplay. I have no idea what to do though. Aiming for simple and inexpensive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Paper mache maybe? ^^;

Paper mache is probably your best bet. The only other thing I could think of would be clay, but paper mache will probably be better.

Insulation foam, maybe? Covered with something else to make it more solid. Paper mache sounds like it would be too hard to use unless you had something to cover it with. There's also things like foamcore board and such that you could add clay on top of to give it more shape.

Seconding everything you said, haha. If you go with insulation foam, you can papermache it and then use epoxy resin to make it plastic-like smooth. If you use the epoxy directly on the insulation foam, it will melt so be careful.

For foamcore and clay, I would recommend you build up layers of cardboard ontop so that you use less cardboard. Im actually doing that method on a scythe im making

Ah, I never thought of that... I think the foamcore will be the best and easiest to use. Epoxy and I haven't gotten along well in the past.

So, maybe use the foamcore to build a 2-D verison of the shichishito, then use the cardboard to give it the edge and depth? That's the part where I get stuck... How to actually give it an "edge." Without it falling apart.

The cardboard layers build up, then you fill in the gaps with a air-drying clay (like paperclay). If you look back on that picture of my scythe, you can see the different layers of cardboard I have built up on there. I just need to use clay to make the actual edges.

if your really good with wood and know stuff about wood grain cutting and so on you could try to make a flat cut out of it on a wood plank and sand untill rounded
Easter said than done but once done it would be way less likely to brake than any thing... Well any thing besides metal that is

That looks a lot like Sizer's scythe [/randomthought]
Thanks, I'll try that once I start building. I think you mentioned paper clay? There's a difference? *very undecucated in prop making*

Paperclay is a specific brand of clay. What's awesome about it is that it's super lightweight and air-dries, so you don't have to bake it (which you can't do if you're making something out of a foamcore/cardboard base). It comes in a black, red, and white package and can be found at most craft stores like Michaels.

It would be possible to put an "edge" on foam core. Though it'd take some razor blades and a steady hand.
And of course don't forget about how long it'd be. For refference i've got a (cheap ass made in france fake metal wood and and plastic) Katana which has a 10" handle and a 30" blade. And it's definitely shorter than the Shichishito in the game (at least the one in case 5, the one being held by the statue in case 2 looks like the same size). So you'd need a 1/4 or 5/16 inch wood dowel for the core, otherwise it could bend. Dowels are avalable in 4' lengths so that's what'd i use.
Hope this helps :redd:

Hm, it's just a matter of how little materials I can use. I think the paper clay will work, along with the cardboard. The dowel rod is a good idea, but woulld that take a lot of clay to cover up? It's just, what to use as a base... And if I'll have enough time for this ^^;
Thank you everyone for your help so far too!
