"Excuse me... Your Highness?" A young and rather timid guard stepped into the vision of December Dawson, Queen of the Peppermint Kingdom.
"Yes, what is it, Hugo?" December asked, glancing down at the guard. "Is there something truly important to disturb me?" Hugo shook, terrified of the Queen's cold demeanour, but he had to answer to the Queen lest she chose to execute him.
"Your... your daughter is coming soon. Our letter has arrived," Hugo mumbled nervously. "And we've sent another trigger to Saxum Mantegazza. All we need now is for them to come, meet and the prophecy shall be fulfilled." December laughed, a long and terrifying laugh that made Hugo whimper so hard he turned and fled, unable to handle the terror of December's laugh any longer.
September Dawson, a simple young girl rained down on by bullying issues, gets a letter and a parcel. The letter tells her to open the parcel and use the enclosed item to take care of the bullies, and if she did she would be rewarded with paradise. Inside the parcel is a sharp knife, well capable of killing someone. September takes it to school and the minute Slovenian bully Aisha Abramič attacks her, September kills Aisha without hesitation.
The minute September removes the knife from Aisha's corpse, she is transported to Ashhaven City of the Peppermint Kingdom. Local greeting fairy Mint wants to show September around Ashhaven (you wouldn't believe how many times I've been writing Asshaven) but September refuses, wanting to know where she is and why she's there. Mint is unable to calm the raging September, but apprentice greeting fairy Feather calms September, explaining that the confused teenager is in Ashhaven City of the Peppermint Kingdom, one of the six Cloud Kingdoms. Cloud Kingdoms are kingdoms residing on top of the clouds, and the six Cloud Kingdoms are Peppermint, d'Arc, Blueshadow, Retribution, Cerknica and Scaven.
September wants to know how she got there and Feather is stumped too. Feather introduces September to the battle system of the Cloud Kingdoms: simple card games. Duels of 3 cards are the fighting system of the Cloud Kingdoms, but people in the army or police use real weaponry. Criminals will illegally obtain and use weaponry, which is a serious affair and can get you life in prison. September wants to join the army, as perhaps it will open up new opportunities for her, so she heads to the capital of Peppermint, Coasthollow. She stops at the village midway, Beachbridge, where she meets battling genius Talon Sentai. September challenges Talon to a duel, but Feather doesn't allow the duel because September would get thrashed and all newbies who challenge Talon usually commit suicide soon after.
September, Feather and new party member Talon head to Coasthollow where they meet a young man called Saxum Mantegazza. September recognises him, as Saxum was an accomplished vocalist in the rock band Uprising Death. Uprising Death disbanded last year, so Saxum and the guitarist formed Fearless Of The Reverent, their new band that would do all kinds of genres. Fearless Of The Reverent had only released their debut album 'Lord of Era' a few weeks prior to September's sending to the Peppermint Kingdom. Saxum was also teleported to the Peppermint Kingdom, and he hadn't been lucky enough as to have everything explained. While Feather explained everything to him, September purchased new and more powerful cards thanks to Talon. Saxum and Feather rejoined September and Talon then they went to the army headquarters to appeal for joining the army. Robert de Rege, the army commander, sent the party to Coasthollow Castle, where Peppermint Queen December Dawson stayed.
When September and her party reached Coasthollow Castle's throne room, December revealed she was September's mother and had sent September to the Peppermint Kingdom. Saxum didn't know what he was doing there, but December told him that Saxum's father Montgomery Mantegazza was the ruler of the Retribution Kingdom and had sent a letter of request for December to bring Saxum to the Cloud Kingdoms.
December crowns September, Saxum and Talon as Knights of the Peppermint Council. Feather is crowned as the Official Introductory Fairy for the Peppermint Kingdom and is in charge of welcoming all officials into the Peppermint Kingdom, an honour among the Fairy community.
"For now, we need you to train, all of you. If you go south from Ashhaven, you'll come upon the village of Feyfield. That's where the best instructor of knights in the entire Peppermint Kingdom is. She also happens to be the leader of the Peppermint Council. Her name is Patchouli le Fay. It is a fake name, as when Robert de Rege found her, all she would say was Patchouli, which he assumed to be her name. She was knighted as Patchouli le Fay, as in Morgan le Fay. Anyways!" December boomed, her voice echoing through the hall. "Make your way to Feyfield. It is a magical village peppered with magical artefacts, so don't break anything."
When the party is heading to Feyfield, Talon takes them to a tavern called the Fearless. There, they learn of a rebellion heading to Feyfield. September, Saxum and Talon have to protect Feyfield - it is their duty as a Knight. They rush to Feyfield with Feather in tow, then arrive at Feyfield. It would've been beautiful, had it not been ablaze. Talon instantly rushes off to do battle with a rebel, but September and Saxum head deeper into the village and rescue burning citizens. Feather helps with the children and is strong enough to take babies out of burning houses. Eventually, when they have evacuated all living citizens and all the rebels are taken down, September and Saxum stand watching the destruction around them in disbelief.
"This is...!!" September gasped, gently rocking a baby in her arms.. "How could they do such a thing?" She glanced down at the dead bodies of citizens and rebels alike lying on the ground. "Such destruction... why? Why did they have to do this?!"
"Calm down," Saxum said softly, laying a hand on September's shoulder as she cried. "This is a war... Wars are cruel, merciless, relentless. The warriors don't care about the deaths of some people..."
"But how can people be so cruel?!" September sobbed, crashing to her knees. "WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!"
September slept fitfully and Saxum stayed by her side, worried for September's welfare. Feather and Talon stayed up the entire night, extinguishing the fires with Patchouli le Fay and then rescuing bodies from the buildings, dead or alive. The next morning, September won't speak. In the afternoon, the Feyfield citizens who either died in the night or were found dead are buried and September speaks, if only to sing a song in respect of the deceased.
"The trees bow their head in respect... The wind slows its raging gales... The spirits rise up to the heavens... Though it seems not, all is not lost... We learn from our mistakes... Thank you for being there... Thank you for being there..."
The next day, Patchouli took the Knights and Feather to the city of Snowbush, located in the Winterfirth Mountains. Snowbush was hailed with threatens of a rebel attack and as the rebels tried to pour in, the gates were slammed shut and archers wrecked the rebel forces. A rebel sneaked in through a hole in the wall and challenged September to a duel. September won, but as she was about to let the young rebel go, Talon killed him.
"What was that for!?" September yelled, turning to face Talon. "He's young!"
"Does that matter? He is an enemy, and all enemies must be struck down in the name of Queen December!" Talon replied. "If you are to be a knight, you must learn the ways of warfare." September shook her head and backed away.
"Then I don't want to be a knight. Knights are just killing machines - pawns in the Queen's stupid game!" September yelled. She turned tail and ran through the hole in the wall, leaving Talon and the dead boy.
When Saxum heard September had left, he chased her down to Coasthollow, where September was planning to take her life. She had withdrawn blood from herself and was using it as ink to write her suicide note when Saxum found her.
"What are you doing?!" Saxum yelled, grabbing the suicide note and scrunching it up. He tossed it into the corner and took the bottle of blood, smashing it against the wall.
"I want to die..." September mumbled. "Kill me..." She sunk down against the wall, huge bags underneath her eyes.
"No! Why do you want to die?!" Saxum asked.
"We're all pawns... All the knights are pawns..." September sobbed. "Why... Why can't I just disappear?" Saxum leaned down and wrapped an arm around September. She was cold, despite the warm temperatures in Coasthollow and the blistering heat inside the hotel.
"Because we can stop knights being pawns. You and I can do it," Saxum said softly. "And we can get Feather to help us."
September, Saxum, Feather and the aggravated Patchouli (who watched innocent children get killed by knights) visit the Castle to stop the Peppermint Council's knights from being used and turned into killing machines. December orders them all to be locked up, but offers September a chance to stay out of prison. September outright refuses to take up the offer and goes to prison with her friends. September and Saxum are locked in one cell, and the cell next door holds Feather and Patchouli.
Inside the cell, September and Saxum pledge to always be together as they try to disband the knights and as they finish their pledge they kiss. A few days later, Saxum's mother and father Merle and Montgomery Mantegazza broke September & co out of the prison. Merle and Montgomery join the anti-knight effort.
